Things to Consider When You’re Doing Sponsored Content | Podmas Day 17Eventually you’re going to be approached by a brand to do a sponsored post. First of all, let me say congratulations! Second, let’s put on our thinking cap and see if this is a good fit for you. So what are some general questions or guidelines one could follow when it comes to getting paid? Let’s discuss a few points. You deserve to be paid, don’t do things for “exposure”. Exposure most of the time is, worthless to you in the long run and extremely beneficial to the other party in the short term. If this is you, you may want to consider lacing up your Nike’s and getting the heck out of dodge. Not to say that doing some things for free can work out for you in the long run, absolutely they can, but those types of opportunities are usually best found by you, not the person who is asking. You should be getting paid for your time and effort and expertise. I know you may feel like you are a nobody, but you are a somebody and somebodies…get paid. How to Love Your Haters | Podmas Day 16Can you feel the love online? I hope you can, but occasionally, unfortunately, you’re also eventually going to see someone’s lack of love for you. This could come in the form of a hate comment or an unwelcome comment about your physical appearance. Today I’m talking through some ways to love your online haters. I get it, it’s tough, I’ve been there, I’ve cried. I don’t want you to go through all the same thoughts I did. I wish someone were around to tell me why I shouldn’t care as much as I do and how I shouldn’t let it affect me the way it does. It’s easier said than done to “focus on the positive” but in reality, the execution of this can be…challenging. I’m here to tell you I get it. There is something wrong with THEM, not something wrong with you. You are brave enough to put something on the internet that you love and want to share with the world. The simple act of you doing this shows that you are brave and talented and it’s amazing. The fact that these online trolls have to take time out of their day to bring you down is just really sad when you think about it in the end. Talk it out with a friend but realize that these people don’t know you and in real life would never speak to you with such venom and hatred. People online get brave behind a keynoard and think it’s perfectly fine to say and type anything that they are thinking and many of them do it just for fun, forgetting that there are REAL people on the receiving end of these messages. Most of these people would be so embarrassed if they had to show their mother, or grandmother the types of comments and messages they send to people. The likelihood of you ever running into one of these people in real life is slim to none. The chances of them being brave enough to say the same things to you is almost non-existent. Keep trucking on, that’s all I can tell you. I’m here for you and if you want to swap “best hater comments” online sometime, I might just be down to play the game!

Subpocalypse on YouTube! | Podmas Day 14

It started as a tweet, a notice from Team YouTube about a subscriber cleanup process and a link to an article about what was happening. You could see the panic start to sink in for some folks, “Why is this happening? Where are my people going? How do I fix this?” questions started showing up online and the term and hashtag #subpocalypse started trending on Twitter. Today we are tackling the subject head on, what it means to have a spam subscriber clean up, what can you expect over what time frame, and if you should be scared. Inevitably, it always pops up on any video you see, something along the lines of “Sub4Sub” and “Any small youtubers want to support each other?” The “support” is just an promise of a new subscriber, one who will never watch your videos and engage with your content but you don’t care as long as you see the numbers tick upwards on social blade counters. According to this article from youtube, Sub4Sub is actually a Terms of Service violation and could potentially get your channel terminated yet you see it time and time again. I don’t want anything like this to happen to you so lets talk about what is happening. I hope that this helps clarify YouTube’s stance on this subject.

Why they always have an aesthetically pleasing Instagram feed and get to rub elbows on red carpets with celebrities you’ve always wanted to meet? Ever wonder why they are constantly on the branding of some company and launching new amazing merchandise and makeup lines when you are just wishing someone from a PR company would know who the heck you are? There is a very good reason for all of this, and I’m going to let you in on the secret that a lot of them don’t want to tell you. The truth is they have a team, sometimes enough to fill a bus with of people who are helping to feed the machine. Let’s briefly talk about the members of an entourage that you might come across and why you should NOT feel bad about where you are currently when you don’t have this army of people in your life too. I hope this gives you a little perspective and helps you realize that it sometimes take an entire team to do what you are handling currently all by yourself. It’s all about scale. I know that title may stir up some debate but today I want to dispel the incorrect assumption that unless you have a ton of subs, you can never make a living on YouTube. I was lucky enough to interview my friend, fellow 2 time Seattle YouTube Day panelist and VR Evangelist, Eugene Capon from Capon Studio.
We started talking about the YouTube demonetization that happened earlier this year, the effect it had on the community and ways that he has managed to build a full time career as a creator online. Eugene has a wealth of knowledge and I hope that you will enjoy this episode.
*Side note: This is the first time I have ever tried to record a conversation that was held via Skype to edit in my audio interface. I ran into some technical difficulties so I apologize that I wasn’t able to fully separate the audio where both of us are speaking to edit out things that were happening at the same time. There may be some parts that aren’t as pleasing to the ear as usual. I will try to improve this for future recordings. Thanks!
