April Dunford, Author Of Obviously Awesome: How to Nail Product Positioning

Today’s guest is April Dunford, positioning expert and the author of the book Obviously Awesome.  April Dunford is an executive consultant, speaker, and author who helps companies make complicated products easy for customers to understand and love. She is a globally recognized expert in Positioning, having launched 16 products across her 25-year career as VP Marketing at a series of successful startups.

Positioning as a concept has been around since 1969 when it was first introduced by Jack Trout and Al Ries. The idea became mainstream marketing knowledge after Ries and Trout published“Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind” in the early 80’s and marketers have been taught this style of positioning ever since. Ries and Trout argued that Positioning was the solution to standing out in a noisy marketplace filled with too many products and too many marketing messages trying to promote them. Positioning is the act of giving those customers a map of the current landscape and then instructing them where they fit and why one solution is better than the others around them.

April points out that positioning has a positioning problem today and provides a 10 step positioning playbook for companies and marketers to adopt. Developing a positioning statement is often done as a fill-in-the-blank “Mad Libs” exercise based on a template.  In this podcast April tells us what good positioning should look like with examples. She wants us to be cognizant that the  early adopting customers may not be your eventual mainstream ones (as Geoffrey Moore has written about in his iconic book Crossing the Chasm).

The history of Twitter, is an example of how a venture whose founders thought it would do one thing ended up doing something entirely different once they were exposed to the market.

Bill Davidow has been a high-technology industry executive and a venture investor for more than 30 years. In 1985, he founded Mohr Davidow Ventures, a venture capital firm and continued as an active advisor after stepping down as a general partner. Davidow is the author of Marketing High Technology and a co-author of Total Customer Service and The Virtual Corporation.

While at Intel, Bill served as senior vice president of marketing and sales, vice president of thmicrocomputer division and vice president of the microcomputer systems division. Bill Davidow's latest book is "The Autonomous Revolution: Reclaiming the Future we've sold to Machines", which he has co-authored with Michael S. Malone.

We are at the dawn of the Autonomous Revolution, a turning point in human history as decisive as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. More and more, AI-based machines are replacing human beings, and online environments are gathering our data and using it to manipulate us. This loss of human autonomy amounts to nothing less than a societal phase change, a fundamental paradigm shift. The same institutions will remain--schools, banks, churches, and corporations--but they will radically change form, obey new rules, and use new tools.

 Many of the book's recommendations--such as using taxes to control irresponsible internet behavior and enabling people to put their data into what are essentially virtual personal information "safety deposit boxes"--are bold and visionary, but we must figure out how we will deal with these emerging challenges now, before the Autonomous Revolution overcomes us.

Lila was the deputy for CTO Kevin Scott. She’s the person to jump into a complex project and help teams accelerate. It's hard to take an innovation and make it part of the company's core business. She helps teams cross that chasm. I look at innovation and figure out how to scale.

The brain helps us design better algorithms. Computational biology will be an enormous and exciting frontier.

The human brain has 100 trillion connections. The leading supercomputer has 172 billion hyper parameters, growing astronomically fast. At some point, supercomputers will match the human capacity.”

Humans are more computationally efficient, extremely low powered, 20 watts to operate. Supercomputers with 30,000 GPUs take 10 times that amount.

The human brain is also multimodal. We have many senses, including hidden senses. We imagine the world that our brain processes. The human brain trains incrementally and builds upon prior knowledge all the time. We've built up knowledge over and over again. AI is good at specialized tasks. It can translate across human languages.

We can learn from biological constructs and apply them to computer science, then accelerate biological discovery, and create a flywheel in computational biology and AI.
