Ep.157 Feeling Meh

Ep.157 Feeling Meh

Do you ever feel “meh” about your purpose, relationships, career…life? According to Wikipedia, meh (/mɛ/) is a colloquial interjection used as an expression of indifference or boredom. It is often regarded as a verbal equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders. The term "meh" shows that the speaker is apathetic, uninterested, or indifferent to the question or subject at hand. Today Judy and I begin an exploration of apathy. I’ve talked with so many women who have gone through the motions of life for so long that they don’t even know where to begin when it comes to living a full, vibrant, and exciting life. We discuss how apathy develops and the first step in moving out of and through feelings of “meh”. Ep.156 Whatcha Reading?

Ep.156 Whatcha Reading?

Are you a reader or want to be a reader? Well, both Judy and I love a good book! Over the years I have read or listened to the audio version of countless stories. But lately (since retired from teaching) my reading habit has fallen off. This year, I've decided to refresh this practice. My reasons go beyond the educational focus of upgrading my mind and opening up other worlds. Instead, I look forward to becoming more interesting, improving my memory, and reducing stress. With that said, please put book recommendations (fiction or nonfiction) in the comments. Or, if you want a personal reply, please drop a message to Judy, me, or any of the Sidetracked Sisters! Ep.155 Do You Have Erroneous Zones?

Ep.155 Do You Have Erroneous Zones?

"Acceptance means no complaining, and happiness means no complaining about the things over which you can do nothing." --Dr. Wayne Dyer (Your Erroneous Zones)

Today Judy and I dig into the vintage self-help book "Your Erroneous Zones". This was Dr. Wayne Dyer's first book, published almost a half-century ago. It offers practical advice on how to break free from destructive thought patterns and overcome negative emotions. It was the first book of its kind that Judy had ever read...and it blew her mind back in 1977.

Then we discuss how its concepts are still relevant. We specifically look at two sections: The first is about the useless emotions of guilt and worry and the second is about breaking free from the past and not getting sucked into negative thought loops.

Ep.152 Open to Change

Ep.152 Open to Change

"We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are." --Max Depree Today Judy and I are open with our audience about some changes we are considering for the new year. We love talking about life "blockages" and talking with others who have overcome writer's block specifically. We love writing and think everyone should be journaling or writing some regular "morning pages". But..in the next podcast season, we want to branch out. We will continue to write, AND we want to explore other options for self-development and growth for those of us who aren't exactly spring chickens any longer.

In this episode and the next, we invite you to help us make the 2024 season even more interesting, relevant, and motivating. Please comment with suggestions, or you can message us with your thoughts!

Ep.146 Change It Up

Every day of our lives, we are on the verge of making those slight changes that would make all the difference – Mignon McLaughlin

Judy and I talk about "changing it up". Whether you are a writer or looking to be more creative, it's time to flip your schedule, experiment with food, and get out of the house! I believe that we are all happiest when we are creating. Let's get out of that rut and use some of today’s suggestions to adjust our perspective. Lawyers, teachers, computer gurus, sales associates, corporate managers, and industrial engineers all benefit from getting unblocked. Creativity is something that makes us just. feel. good. We should all want to inject creativity into our lives and our work.

In other words, this episode, this podcast is for you...whoever you are...whatever you make.

Ep.140 Write to Write

Ep.140 Write to Write

"Good thinkers always prime the pump of ideas. They always look for things to get the thinking process started, because what you put in always impacts what comes out." --John C. Maxwell (American author, coach, and speaker) And, what does it mean, exactly to "prime the pump"? According to Google, this phrase means "to encourage the growth or action of something. In the late 1800s, this expression was originally used for pouring liquid into a pump to get rid of the air and make it work. Then, in the 1930s it was applied to government efforts to stimulate the economy."

Well, today Judy and I help you prime the pump of your writing. We want to get our words out and down on paper. We want to get our ideas out into the world. But to do this most efficiently, sometimes we have to kind of trick our brains into writing. We want to get that creative water of our thoughts flowing...and that's what we'll get into today...

Ep.139 Do You Have a WHY?

Today Judy and I get into the all the feels! We dig into WHY we both love to write...and we get deep. We discuss why we write for ourselves and for our loved ones. We recognize that there is a different "why" for us puting writing out for a wider audience--the world really--to read and consume.

You see, we believe that we, all of us as humans, have a deep desire to see and be seen, to hear and be heard, to know and be known. We also want to know that by connecting with others , we can, in some small way, makie this world a little bit better.

Ep.135 Tornado or Potato

Ep.135 Tornado or Potato

"Sometimes people ask me if I regret 'wasting' those decades before I learned to believe in my writing and take it seriously. No, I tell them. I was gestating, amassing experience and material I tap into when I write my poems today." --Rebecca Faust (poet)

As a woman with many diverse experiences behind me, I recognize that life is always changing. We are always learning... something. In each stage of life, it often feels like that is the way it will always be. But, that isn't the case. In writing, sometimes I feel tornado-ish (writing comes fast and easy). At other times, I'm in a more potato-ish place (boring and bland). If life has its ups and downs, peaks and troughs, doesn't it make sense that our experience with writing will also?

Today, Judy and I talk about writing when we feel like it, and when we don't. Because...that's just the way it works.

Ep.134 "Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway" with Heidi Eliason

Ep.134 "Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway" with Heidi Eliason

"I'm the other kind of writer. I don't write every day. I don't have set hours that I write (and I know I should). But I get there eventually...I want it to be an enjoyable process." --Heidi Eliason

Have you ever felt suffocated by your routine and responsibilities, or just longed for some adventure? Heidi Eliason did, so at the age of 45 she quit her job, sold her house, bought a motorhome, and embarked on a five-year road trip with her dog, Rylie. It was a journey that transformed her life.

Through memoir, she recounts the challenges of managing the Green Monster--her motorhome--traveling in Mexico, and getting derailed by Mr. Wrong. She learned--sometimes the hard way--that chasing the corporate ladder and storybook romance was not always a sure route to happiness. She struggled with insecurities, faced her fears, and dug her way out of depression.

Today I talk with Heidi about her process to write the story of this journey. She hopes that her book, Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway, may help others to find the courage to jump off the hamster wheel of the conventional dream and make a transformative journey of their own. And perhaps you will be inspired, by our conversation today, to write about YOUR journey!

Here are a couple of resources she mentioned in today's interview:

Ep.133 "WHY ME? What now?" with Melanie Gareau

Ep.133 "WHY ME? What now?" with Melanie Gareau

"If you have an idea, you should run with it. That idea was given to you for a reason, and you...YOU are the person who is supposed to take that idea and make something out of it." -- Melanie Gareau

Today I talk with Melanie Gareau. She is a parent, educator, and author who lost a student to suicide and the experience shattered her heart. As a form of self-therapy, she turned to writing. This writing in turn developed into a resource for teenagers and young adults--WHY ME? What now?

Melanie knew that kids don't want or need to be told what to do or what to think. There are enough people trying to do that already. Instead, she wants to empower teens to talk, ask for help, find support, and do what feels right for them. Her book is a resource with stories and practical advice to empower readers. The struggle is real, but it is possible to meet life's challenges and come out the other side stronger and more resilient.

Here are a couple of resources she mentioned in today's interview:

Reedsy.com

Bigmoosepublishing.com

You can find her book here and here and on her website here.

She is also on social media on Facebook and Instagram.

Ep.132 I Don't Believe In It

Ep.132 I Don't Believe In It

Author Lois Lowry was asked about her writing process and how she got over writer's block (here). She answered, "I write on a computer and I have never suffered from writer's block. In fact, I don't believe in it. It's a made-up term that has taken on some kind of silly importance. Writing is a job. Some days you don't feel like doing your job. But there is no 'teacher's block' or 'dentist's block.' I can't figure out why we have created this mysterious phrase .. only for writers .. which only means 'I don't feel like doing this right now'."

Today, Judy and I talk about the possibility that writer's block doesn't. even. exist. We get into three strategies that you've definitely heard of before that you are probably already doing. And like many well-known, successful techniques, it's sometimes nice to know that you're on the right track. These practices are like a vaccine that protects you from getting all blocked up. So sit back and enjoy a conversation that is sure to inspire you.

Ep.127 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

Ep.127 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

"Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better." -Sydney J. Harris

Judy and I are so excited for today's episode. We have a BIG announcement...you see, the Sidetracked Sisters are very familiar with change. I think it comes with the territory of being "sidetracked". That said, today we want to share with our listeners some changes we are embarking on. We are ready to get into our thoughts about where the Sidetracked Sisters have been, where we are currently, and where we are going. We want our writing and our podcast to get better. We want to touch and encourage more people. And...we know we can't reach these two goals without making some changes.

Oh, and I can't forget to mention (in the midst of this chaos) that we get into some thoughts about overcoming writer's block.

Change is on the horizon. And guess what? We want YOU to come along for the ride.

Ep.126 Writing as a Mirror

Ep.126 Writing as a Mirror

"An unexamined life isn't worth living." -Socrates

"An examined life is no picnic." -Robert Fulghum

Judy and I love to write! We write by ourselves and with our Sidetracked Sisters. We like to do legacy writing and come up with blog posts. We also do a lot of journal writing.

In our conversation, we discuss a variety of reasons why journal writing is so valuable. But perhaps the most important reason is that we write to process current problems and old traumas so that we see the lessons life offers.

We do this processing by following a "Think, Feel, Do" framework. We begin by freely describing a problem or circumstance and then getting into the surrounding thoughts and feelings. Then we follow this up with a listing of our actions...how we responded, or how we wish we had reacted. It's a valuable strategy to process and consider how you want to move forward.

Ep.125 Brain Garbage

Ep.125 Brain Garbage

"Clean and nourish your brain wisely every day. It can easily become a garbage bin." --Philip Arnold

Today, Judy and I talk about why we like to write first thing in the morning. We get into the fact that I am a "morning person" and she is definitely NOT. This doesn't change the fact that morning writing is so important.

It doesn't matter what you call your morning writing. It is sometimes called "morning pages" or "thought downloads"--but whatever you call your journaling time, it is like clearing out the junk, getting the garage cleared out...just really dealing with the gunk that would otherwise muck up our brains!

Ep.124 Stop and Smell the Dandelions

Ep.124 Stop and Smell the Dandelions

“Why doesn’t constant trampling defeat the dandelion? The key to its strength is its long and sturdy root, which extends deep into the earth. The same principle applies to people. The true victors in life are those who, enduring repeated challenges and setbacks, have sent the roots of their being to such a depth that nothing can shake them.”  Daisaku Ikeda

Welcome to the "Sidetracked Legacies" podcast #124.

In today's episode, Judy and I riff on dandelions! We talk about what happens when you stop and smell the dandelions. It opens up questions, thoughts, ideas, and memories for us. We can use this experience as a tool to get deeper into our writing practice...deeper into ourselves. The practice helps to grow our roots.

We also explore how learning and writing are best explored with a playful attitude.

What we really want for ourselves and our audience is to use tools (like dandelions) to live more in the moment, live our best life, and help us appreciate beauty--wherever it may be found.

Ep.123 Peeling the Onion

Ep.123 Peeling the Onion

"Writing helps open you up. It is peeling the onion. We always get deeply into other layers as we pull the one from the outside off. We even get tears sometimes when we do that." --Judy Goodson

I thought Judy was speaking such words of wisdom when she said that. Later, I found out that others agreed with her comparison...Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Carl Sandberg is quoted saying, "Life is like an onion. You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep." Wow. Judy and Carl Sandberg...who'd have known?!?

Today Judy and I got together and discussed how writing is a practice. Thinking about the similarities between writing, life, and onions, we recognize how all three have layers and bring out emotion.

We talk about how we aren't going for perfection in our writing. We use it as a practice. The writing gets us into a writer's awareness of the world and our experiences in it.

Next, we get into what we do when we feel resistance to writing and how common that resistance is when it's time to write. We actually have begun to expect resistance and just...do it anyway!

We give ourselves permission to write whatever comes. It's even ok to let the worst junk come through our pens and sit on the page.

Later we move into Judy's process to write poetry.

Wrapping up this session, Judy and I talk about how writing fits within the concept of the "blue zones". It helps us in a meditative kind of way. It helps us downshift and become more aware of our own minds. It also connects us with our right tribe--people who are interesting to us and interested in us. Writing helps us bond with others who are like-minded.

Ep.122 It's About Time

Ep.122 It's About Time

"Whether you're keeping a journal or writing a meditation, it's the same thing. What's important is that you're having a relationship with your mind." --Natalie Goldberg

Today Judy and I got together and discussed making time to write. Thinking about the quote by Natalie Goldberg, I can't help but recognize the importance of TIME when you are building a relationship. You can't have a deep, solid, intimate relationship with anyone (even your own mind) if you don't devote time to the process.

In this episode, we talk about making time for writing. It's not something that you FIND time to do, you MAKE the commitment to the time.

Some of our favorite people talk about the importance of committing time to write: Hal Erod talks about "scribing" in The Miracle Morning, Julia Cameron talks about "morning pages" in The Artist's Way, and Mathew Dicks in his books Someday is Today and Storyworthy gets into the concept of "homework for life". Each of these people encourages us to make time daily to record our thoughts, experiences, and random brain droppings.

Judy and I talk about what this looks like for us. We get into how writing works for non-writers too. It is for anyone who is trying to do anything creative. Whether you are a teacher, a dancer, a lawyer, a stay-at-home mom, or a retired real estate agent...journal writing, daily scribing, is for those of us who want to nurture our own life experience and connect to an inner power source.

Ep.121 Living On Purpose

Ep.121 Living On Purpose

“I must write it all out, at any cost. Writing is thinking. It is more than living, for it is being conscious of living.” -Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Today Judy and I talked about how writers use writing to become more thoughtful and aware of life. Judy uses the analogy of living life as a swimmer diving under the surface to explore the depths when we write about our lives.

We also briefly talk about using small notebooks to record lists, inspirational quotes, and observations that feel important at the moment.

Near the end, we get into the idea that we don't always write to impart knowledge...but to inform ourselves, remind ourselves, teach ourselves, and maybe even use writing to keep ourselves accountable to what is important to us.

Finally, we offer a challenge quick daily writing challenge.

Ep.120 Governed By Idiots

Ep.120 Governed By Idiots

"It's a human need to be told stories. The more we're governed by idiots and have no control over our destinies, the more we need to tell stories to each other about who we are, why we are here, where we come from, and what might be possible." -Alan Rickman

This quote seemingly came out of nowhere when I surfed on social media the other day. When it did, I was speechless and knew I had the seed for something exciting for Judy and me to talk about. So, in this episode, we get into the value of digging up our past and sharing it with others. We discuss the significance of honoring the who and the why of our present, the where of our past, and the what of the future we might create.

Ep.119 Poetic License

Ep.119 Poetic License

"Memory takes a lot of poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated, according to the emotional value of the articles it touches, for memory is seated predominantly in the heart." --Tennessee Williams

Today Judy and I talk about sharing our legacy writing by telling our stories. We use poetic license to share in a way that feels true and elevates a story in a way that makes it interesting to tell and causes our readers to want to learn more. Not that our storytelling is in any way artificial or false, but we want to write in a way that helps us reflect on the experience and draws our readers in.

We also get into how our writing has a connection with meditation. We are able to get into a deeper place and quiet our monkey mind when we put our pen to the paper and remember...

Ep.118 To Tell the Truth

Ep.118 To Tell the Truth

“When you write your truth, it is a love offering to the world because it helps us feel braver and less alone.” -Glennon Doyle

Today Judy and I talked about the need to be truthful in our writing. We want others to recognize that any piece of writing is really a snapshot in time. We talk about how every family has their sh*t and this event, situation, or story just happens to be ours. We also briefly understand that truth-sharing makes our writing relatable and gives it depth. Lessons are made of "real" experiences.

Near the end, we get into the role of "poetic license" in writing and the place of self-analysis in storytelling. Or, to quote Judy, "You can get more attention from your reader and you can make your point more clearly by sharing an experience than by having them suffer through explanation!"

Ep.117 Whats's the Big Difference?

Ep.117 Whats's the Big Difference?

“To be truly seen and heard, to be truly known, is a deep human need. Our hunger for it is so omnipresent, so much a part of our experience of life, that we no more know what it is we are missing than a fish knows it is wet.” -Charles Einstein (American author and podcaster)

Today Judy and I talk about the desire we have to be seen and heard, and known through our writing We give our thoughts and opinions on a variety of kinds of ways to do this. We talk about the pros and cons of morning pages, daily logs, and artistic "junk" journals. We also briefly get into specific journals for dreams, food, books, travel, gratitude, and goals.

Near the end, we share some motivating thoughts on the benefits of legacy writing and ponder the value of really putting ourselves "out there" to be seen by others in an intensely profound way.
