Ep.171 Finding Joy
Some days you eat salad and go to the gym, some days you eat cupcakes and refuse to put on pants. It's called BALANCE. Throughout the episode, we candidly discuss the moments when joy seems elusive, from the everyday doldrums to the pursuit of genuine fun. While I find joy in the simple pleasures of life, like the companionship of my furry friends during morning walks and the artistry of calligraphy, Michelle explores the complexities of joy and its elusive nature in her own life. We share intimate anecdotes and reflections, inviting you into our journey of self-discovery and exploration of what truly brings us joy. One thing we can all agree on is our skepticism towards the pursuit of 'balance' as a source of joy—it simply doesn't resonate with our lived experiences. So, grab your favorite beverage, cozy up, and join us as we embark on a heartfelt conversation about JOY. I promise it'll be a ride filled with laughter, introspection, and maybe even a few surprises along the way. Ep.170 Detours and Distractions
Buffering masquerades as a friend, yet it's truly the enemy of progress. It's the subtle skill of evading the present, only to face regrets tomorrow. Today Judy and I are taking a closer look at buffering – you know, those little detours we take when the going gets tough. Imagine this: you're charging ahead toward your goals, full steam ahead. But then, out of the blue, you find yourself sidetracked by activities that offer nothing but temporary relief. People use a variety of "buffers" to soothe: food, alcohol, Netflix. Often it takes the shape of overeating, overdrinking, Netflix binging... sound familiar? Well, fear not, because, on today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of buffering. We'll uncover the sneaky ways it creeps into our lives, and more importantly, how to kick it to the curb. So, grab your favorite drink, get comfy, and let's navigate these distractions together. Welcome to Sidetracked Stories – where every twist leads to a new revelation!

Ep.169 The Friendship Challenge for Grown-*ss Adults
Remember the days when making friends felt as easy as sharing crayons in kindergarten? Life was simpler, schedules more predictable, and friendships seemed to blossom effortlessly. But then adulthood came knocking, and suddenly, the playground of life became a maze of responsibilities and routines.
Join us as we dive into the perplexing world of adult friendship. From the carefree days of schoolyard camaraderie to the complexities of middle age, we'll explore why making friends as an adult feels like navigating uncharted territory.
In today's episode, Judy and I peel back the layers of this phenomenon. We'll reminisce about the days of dorm life, coffee breaks, and playdates, and ponder why, as the years go by, friendships seem to slip through our fingers like grains of sand. But fear not! We're not here to dwell on the problem; we're here to find solutions.
So grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let's embark on a journey to rediscover the art of making friends in the grown-ass world. Because in a world where connection is everything, we refuse to let middle age put a damper on our social lives.

Ep.168 How Do You Eat Your Frogs?
Welcome to episode 168 of the Sidetracked Stories podcast, where we dive into the wisdom of Mark Twain's timeless advice: "If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And if your job is to eat two frogs, eat the biggest one first."Today, Michelle and I embark on a journey inspired by this quote as we explore the insights from Brian Tracy's book, 'Eat That Frog.' Join us as we dissect the notion of tackling those 'ugly frogs' and devouring even the most daunting challenges head-on. We delve into the concept of having a 'frog-eating partner' and how it can elevate our pursuit of goals. Tune in as we share personal anecdotes and discuss how these principles resonate in our lives, propelling us towards our aspirations and keeping us steadfast on our journey."

Ep.167 Exploring "The 12 Week Year"
Today Judy and I are excited to delve into the wisdom found within the pages of "The 12 Week Year" by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington. As we embark on this literary adventure, we'll briefly overview the book and share why it resonated deeply. But that's just the beginning. Thinking back to our previous discussion on the emotional triad, we'll explore how "The 12 Week Year" concepts intersect with our innate desires for pleasure, avoidance of pain, and efficiency. Then, within our reflections, we'll confront a common hurdle: the allure of comfort. We'll discuss how stepping out of our comfort zones is often necessary to achieve our goals and dreams. It's a fascinating exploration of human psychology and productivity. Moving forward, we'll focus on the importance of intentionality in our actions. Living with purpose and direction is key to making meaningful progress. And finally, we'll emphasize the value of consistent daily action. It's not just about setting goals; it's about actively working toward them every. single. day.

Ep.157 Feeling Meh
Do you ever feel “meh” about your purpose, relationships, career…life? According to Wikipedia, meh (/mɛ/) is a colloquial interjection used as an expression of indifference or boredom. It is often regarded as a verbal equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders. The term "meh" shows that the speaker is apathetic, uninterested, or indifferent to the question or subject at hand. Today Judy and I begin an exploration of apathy. I’ve talked with so many women who have gone through the motions of life for so long that they don’t even know where to begin when it comes to living a full, vibrant, and exciting life. We discuss how apathy develops and the first step in moving out of and through feelings of “meh”. Ep.156 Whatcha Reading?
Are you a reader or want to be a reader? Well, both Judy and I love a good book! Over the years I have read or listened to the audio version of countless stories. But lately (since retired from teaching) my reading habit has fallen off. This year, I've decided to refresh this practice. My reasons go beyond the educational focus of upgrading my mind and opening up other worlds. Instead, I look forward to becoming more interesting, improving my memory, and reducing stress. With that said, please put book recommendations (fiction or nonfiction) in the comments. Or, if you want a personal reply, please drop a message to Judy, me, or any of the Sidetracked Sisters! Ep.155 Do You Have Erroneous Zones?
"Acceptance means no complaining, and happiness means no complaining about the things over which you can do nothing." --Dr. Wayne Dyer (Your Erroneous Zones)
Today Judy and I dig into the vintage self-help book "Your Erroneous Zones". This was Dr. Wayne Dyer's first book, published almost a half-century ago. It offers practical advice on how to break free from destructive thought patterns and overcome negative emotions. It was the first book of its kind that Judy had ever read...and it blew her mind back in 1977.
Then we discuss how its concepts are still relevant. We specifically look at two sections: The first is about the useless emotions of guilt and worry and the second is about breaking free from the past and not getting sucked into negative thought loops.
Ep.154 Introducing Sidetracked Stories
"The only thing that keeps you young is constantly doing things you don't know how to do." -unknown
Today Lisa and Judy begin by telling a bit of the history of the podcast. Then they quickly move into the plan for this to be a place that inspires, entertains, and assists others.

Ep.152 Open to Change
"We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are." --Max Depree Today Judy and I are open with our audience about some changes we are considering for the new year. We love talking about life "blockages" and talking with others who have overcome writer's block specifically. We love writing and think everyone should be journaling or writing some regular "morning pages". But..in the next podcast season, we want to branch out. We will continue to write, AND we want to explore other options for self-development and growth for those of us who aren't exactly spring chickens any longer.
In this episode and the next, we invite you to help us make the 2024 season even more interesting, relevant, and motivating. Please comment with suggestions, or you can message us with your thoughts!

Ep.146 Change It Up
Every day of our lives, we are on the verge of making those slight changes that would make all the difference – Mignon McLaughlin
Judy and I talk about "changing it up". Whether you are a writer or looking to be more creative, it's time to flip your schedule, experiment with food, and get out of the house! I believe that we are all happiest when we are creating. Let's get out of that rut and use some of today’s suggestions to adjust our perspective. Lawyers, teachers, computer gurus, sales associates, corporate managers, and industrial engineers all benefit from getting unblocked. Creativity is something that makes us just. feel. good. We should all want to inject creativity into our lives and our work.
In other words, this episode, this podcast is for you...whoever you are...whatever you make.

Ep.142 Writing As Prayer
Today Judy and I dig into the connection between writing and the divine. We both agree that it is definitely a spiritual practice--whether or not that is the intention. In our discussion, we highlight 3 main benefits of looking at our writing as prayer: 1) improved concentration, 2) develop connection, and 3) document your spiritual journey.
And here is one more quote that informed our conversation today…“Writing is one of the most ancient forms of prayer. To write is to believe communication is possible, that other people are good, that you can awaken their generosity, and their desire to do better.” -Fatema Mernissi (Moroccan feminist writer and sociologist)

Ep.141 "Strong Girls Travel" with Amy Freidl
"Breaking down dreams into attainable goals has been the best thing that I could have done for myself." --Amy Freidl
Amy is the author of the debut story in the new "Strong Girls Travel" series. The book features AJ, an adventurous girl who explores National Parks throughout the U.S. We talk about Amy's writing life and her experiences working on her character, finding help editing and illustrating her story, and the work she is currently engaged in as she prepares to launch this book.
We also talk about the memoir/self-help journal that she published previously. It chronicles her personal and mental journey that she hopes could help others struggling to define a new version of themselves.

Ep.140 Write to Write
"Good thinkers always prime the pump of ideas. They always look for things to get the thinking process started, because what you put in always impacts what comes out." --John C. Maxwell (American author, coach, and speaker) And, what does it mean, exactly to "prime the pump"? According to Google, this phrase means "to encourage the growth or action of something. In the late 1800s, this expression was originally used for pouring liquid into a pump to get rid of the air and make it work. Then, in the 1930s it was applied to government efforts to stimulate the economy."
Well, today Judy and I help you prime the pump of your writing. We want to get our words out and down on paper. We want to get our ideas out into the world. But to do this most efficiently, sometimes we have to kind of trick our brains into writing. We want to get that creative water of our thoughts flowing...and that's what we'll get into today...

Ep.139 Do You Have a WHY?
Today Judy and I get into the all the feels! We dig into WHY we both love to write...and we get deep. We discuss why we write for ourselves and for our loved ones. We recognize that there is a different "why" for us puting writing out for a wider audience--the world really--to read and consume.
You see, we believe that we, all of us as humans, have a deep desire to see and be seen, to hear and be heard, to know and be known. We also want to know that by connecting with others , we can, in some small way, makie this world a little bit better.

Ep.138 What do you THINK???
Thoughts are the cause of all emotions in our lives. Whatever we decide to believe and think will determine how we feel. -Brooke Castillo (The Life Coach School)
Today Judy and I get into our heads and talk about our thoughts. As a life coach, I talk with my clients about how a circumstance can trigger thoughts, these thoughts cause feelings, our feelings drive actions, and actions create results.
So...we get into 4 questions that will help you shed some light on your thoughts. These questions will help you look at your thoughts about writing and about you as a writer. It is a good starting point to examine some foundational beliefs that could either set you up to be a prolific, motivated, and successful writer...or...not.
Questions:
1. What do you think about writing?
2. What do you think about yourself as a writer?
3. What have your people (family/teachers) taught you about your writing?
4. What do you WANT to believe about writing and yourself as a writer?

Ep.137 Pizza and Writing
"Writing is like pizza. Cold pizza, good pizza, bad pizza...it's better than no pizza. So remember: bad writing is better than no writing." --Lauren Oliver author of Vanishing Girls
Welcome to the Overcoming Writer's Block podcast episode #137.
Today Judy and I had some fun with pizza. A couple of hours before we talked, I was on a walk with my dogs and listening to a podcast. The speaker was explaining that when they were writing, they often really struggled with the worry, the fear really, of what other people--family mostly--would think of the story. This was a major block to their ability to get their words down on paper.
And, well, my brain went to pizza. (Not sure why...) It started to use pizza as a metaphor to illustrate why other people's opinions should have no bearing on your writing.
In my conversation with Judy, we talked for a while before I hit record. I didn't know if this was too much of a stretch. But we decided to go with the idea and just have fun with it.

Ep.136 "YOU-KNOW-WHO An Alienated Daughter's Memoir" with Dana Laquidara
"I tend to deal with writer's block by thinking, 'What can I simplify in my life?' Because that will get me more in tune with my intuition and the writing will come." -Dana Laquidara (speaker and author)
Today I talk with Dana Laquidara. She is a speaker and writer who recently had her second book published. Her first book explored the connection between creativity, simplifying, and healing in the book The Uncluttered Mother: Free Up Your Space, Mind, and Heart.
Today, we dig into her second book, YOU-KNOW-WHO An Alienated Daughter's Memoir. We get into her thoughts about the healing that occurs while writing and how she has navigated the process of writing about trauma that affects not only an individual but a family.

Ep.135 Tornado or Potato
"Sometimes people ask me if I regret 'wasting' those decades before I learned to believe in my writing and take it seriously. No, I tell them. I was gestating, amassing experience and material I tap into when I write my poems today." --Rebecca Faust (poet)
As a woman with many diverse experiences behind me, I recognize that life is always changing. We are always learning... something. In each stage of life, it often feels like that is the way it will always be. But, that isn't the case. In writing, sometimes I feel tornado-ish (writing comes fast and easy). At other times, I'm in a more potato-ish place (boring and bland). If life has its ups and downs, peaks and troughs, doesn't it make sense that our experience with writing will also?
Today, Judy and I talk about writing when we feel like it, and when we don't. Because...that's just the way it works.

Ep.134 "Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway" with Heidi Eliason
"I'm the other kind of writer. I don't write every day. I don't have set hours that I write (and I know I should). But I get there eventually...I want it to be an enjoyable process." --Heidi Eliason
Have you ever felt suffocated by your routine and responsibilities, or just longed for some adventure? Heidi Eliason did, so at the age of 45 she quit her job, sold her house, bought a motorhome, and embarked on a five-year road trip with her dog, Rylie. It was a journey that transformed her life.
Through memoir, she recounts the challenges of managing the Green Monster--her motorhome--traveling in Mexico, and getting derailed by Mr. Wrong. She learned--sometimes the hard way--that chasing the corporate ladder and storybook romance was not always a sure route to happiness. She struggled with insecurities, faced her fears, and dug her way out of depression.
Today I talk with Heidi about her process to write the story of this journey. She hopes that her book, Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway, may help others to find the courage to jump off the hamster wheel of the conventional dream and make a transformative journey of their own. And perhaps you will be inspired, by our conversation today, to write about YOUR journey!

Ep.133 "WHY ME? What now?" with Melanie Gareau
"If you have an idea, you should run with it. That idea was given to you for a reason, and you...YOU are the person who is supposed to take that idea and make something out of it." -- Melanie Gareau
Today I talk with Melanie Gareau. She is a parent, educator, and author who lost a student to suicide and the experience shattered her heart. As a form of self-therapy, she turned to writing. This writing in turn developed into a resource for teenagers and young adults--WHY ME? What now?
Melanie knew that kids don't want or need to be told what to do or what to think. There are enough people trying to do that already. Instead, she wants to empower teens to talk, ask for help, find support, and do what feels right for them. Her book is a resource with stories and practical advice to empower readers. The struggle is real, but it is possible to meet life's challenges and come out the other side stronger and more resilient.

Ep.132 I Don't Believe In It
Author Lois Lowry was asked about her writing process and how she got over writer's block (here). She answered, "I write on a computer and I have never suffered from writer's block. In fact, I don't believe in it. It's a made-up term that has taken on some kind of silly importance. Writing is a job. Some days you don't feel like doing your job. But there is no 'teacher's block' or 'dentist's block.' I can't figure out why we have created this mysterious phrase .. only for writers .. which only means 'I don't feel like doing this right now'."
Today, Judy and I talk about the possibility that writer's block doesn't. even. exist. We get into three strategies that you've definitely heard of before that you are probably already doing. And like many well-known, successful techniques, it's sometimes nice to know that you're on the right track. These practices are like a vaccine that protects you from getting all blocked up. So sit back and enjoy a conversation that is sure to inspire you.

Ep.131 "Untethered" by Deborah Staunton
Today I interview the author of "Untethered", Deborah Staunton. In her book, Deb tells the story of growing up with a mentally ill, alcoholic father and the experience of raising a mentally ill daughter. It follows Deb's journey through multiple miscarriages and the "untethering" of minds, relationships, and pregnancies.
At one point in our interview, Deb says, "I just have to get 200 rejections and I'm on my way." This statement beautifully illustrates Deb's tenacity when faced with challenges.
In this episode, we talk about Deb's writing process and the resources she has accessed during the process of writing, editing, and publishing her book.
She talks candidly and with encouragement to others who have a story to tell. Her book is a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit and Deb inspires other writers to keep moving forward in the process of writing and getting their work out into the world.
Deborah's book Untethered can be found everywhere you buy books including Walmart, Amazon, and Barnes&Noble
You can find Deb on Facebook here and she recommends that you check out the International Women's Writers Guild for support in your writing journey.
Ep.130 Blank Page Syndrome
"You can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page." --Jodi Picoult

Ep.129 Writer's Block is Real
"Writer's block is real. It happens. Some days you sit down at the old typewriter put your fingers on the keys, and nothing pops into your head.
Blanko. Nada. El nothingissimo.
What you do when this happens is what separates you from the one-of-these-days-I'm-gonna-write-a-book crowd."
--James N. Frey
Today Judy and I talk about writer's block--what it is and what it looks like. We get into how self-criticism is at the heart, but the brain drama of writer's block shows up in unique and identifiable ways. Stress. Vague thoughts. Fear. Lack of motivation.

Ep.127 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
"Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better." -Sydney J. Harris
Judy and I are so excited for today's episode. We have a BIG announcement...you see, the Sidetracked Sisters are very familiar with change. I think it comes with the territory of being "sidetracked". That said, today we want to share with our listeners some changes we are embarking on. We are ready to get into our thoughts about where the Sidetracked Sisters have been, where we are currently, and where we are going. We want our writing and our podcast to get better. We want to touch and encourage more people. And...we know we can't reach these two goals without making some changes.
Oh, and I can't forget to mention (in the midst of this chaos) that we get into some thoughts about overcoming writer's block.
Change is on the horizon. And guess what? We want YOU to come along for the ride.

Ep.126 Writing as a Mirror
"An unexamined life isn't worth living." -Socrates
"An examined life is no picnic." -Robert Fulghum
Judy and I love to write! We write by ourselves and with our Sidetracked Sisters. We like to do legacy writing and come up with blog posts. We also do a lot of journal writing.
In our conversation, we discuss a variety of reasons why journal writing is so valuable. But perhaps the most important reason is that we write to process current problems and old traumas so that we see the lessons life offers.
We do this processing by following a "Think, Feel, Do" framework. We begin by freely describing a problem or circumstance and then getting into the surrounding thoughts and feelings. Then we follow this up with a listing of our actions...how we responded, or how we wish we had reacted. It's a valuable strategy to process and consider how you want to move forward.

Ep.125 Brain Garbage
"Clean and nourish your brain wisely every day. It can easily become a garbage bin." --Philip Arnold
Today, Judy and I talk about why we like to write first thing in the morning. We get into the fact that I am a "morning person" and she is definitely NOT. This doesn't change the fact that morning writing is so important.
It doesn't matter what you call your morning writing. It is sometimes called "morning pages" or "thought downloads"--but whatever you call your journaling time, it is like clearing out the junk, getting the garage cleared out...just really dealing with the gunk that would otherwise muck up our brains!

Ep.124 Stop and Smell the Dandelions
“Why doesn’t constant trampling defeat the dandelion? The key to its strength is its long and sturdy root, which extends deep into the earth. The same principle applies to people. The true victors in life are those who, enduring repeated challenges and setbacks, have sent the roots of their being to such a depth that nothing can shake them.” ― Daisaku Ikeda
Welcome to the "Sidetracked Legacies" podcast #124.
In today's episode, Judy and I riff on dandelions! We talk about what happens when you stop and smell the dandelions. It opens up questions, thoughts, ideas, and memories for us. We can use this experience as a tool to get deeper into our writing practice...deeper into ourselves. The practice helps to grow our roots.
We also explore how learning and writing are best explored with a playful attitude.
What we really want for ourselves and our audience is to use tools (like dandelions) to live more in the moment, live our best life, and help us appreciate beauty--wherever it may be found.
Ep.123 Peeling the Onion
"Writing helps open you up. It is peeling the onion. We always get deeply into other layers as we pull the one from the outside off. We even get tears sometimes when we do that." --Judy Goodson
I thought Judy was speaking such words of wisdom when she said that. Later, I found out that others agreed with her comparison...Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Carl Sandberg is quoted saying, "Life is like an onion. You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep." Wow. Judy and Carl Sandberg...who'd have known?!?
Today Judy and I got together and discussed how writing is a practice. Thinking about the similarities between writing, life, and onions, we recognize how all three have layers and bring out emotion.
We talk about how we aren't going for perfection in our writing. We use it as a practice. The writing gets us into a writer's awareness of the world and our experiences in it.
Next, we get into what we do when we feel resistance to writing and how common that resistance is when it's time to write. We actually have begun to expect resistance and just...do it anyway!
We give ourselves permission to write whatever comes. It's even ok to let the worst junk come through our pens and sit on the page.
Later we move into Judy's process to write poetry.
Wrapping up this session, Judy and I talk about how writing fits within the concept of the "blue zones". It helps us in a meditative kind of way. It helps us downshift and become more aware of our own minds. It also connects us with our right tribe--people who are interesting to us and interested in us. Writing helps us bond with others who are like-minded.
Ep.122 It's About Time
"Whether you're keeping a journal or writing a meditation, it's the same thing. What's important is that you're having a relationship with your mind." --Natalie Goldberg
Today Judy and I got together and discussed making time to write. Thinking about the quote by Natalie Goldberg, I can't help but recognize the importance of TIME when you are building a relationship. You can't have a deep, solid, intimate relationship with anyone (even your own mind) if you don't devote time to the process.
In this episode, we talk about making time for writing. It's not something that you FIND time to do, you MAKE the commitment to the time.
Some of our favorite people talk about the importance of committing time to write: Hal Erod talks about "scribing" in The Miracle Morning, Julia Cameron talks about "morning pages" in The Artist's Way, and Mathew Dicks in his books Someday is Today and Storyworthy gets into the concept of "homework for life". Each of these people encourages us to make time daily to record our thoughts, experiences, and random brain droppings.
Judy and I talk about what this looks like for us. We get into how writing works for non-writers too. It is for anyone who is trying to do anything creative. Whether you are a teacher, a dancer, a lawyer, a stay-at-home mom, or a retired real estate agent...journal writing, daily scribing, is for those of us who want to nurture our own life experience and connect to an inner power source.
