License to Confuse: Top Horror of the Year and what we've been watching and listening to

It's been a minute! In this episode we wanted to do a little checkin after a summer off of recording and chat some of our top Horror of the Halloween season, as well as some shows we've been watching and new bands we have been listening to. We talk this season's big ones like; Nope, Barbarian, Pearl, and dive deeper into Halloween Ends and its soundtrack. We also chat the Irish series, Derry Girls. This episode does contain some minor spoilers, because no matter how hard we try- somethings get a little spoiled (go watch the movies!).

We also talk about some of the new music we have both been loving. Some of Abbie's picks include: Momma, https://www.mommaband.com/ , and their new album "Household Name"; New Zealand's The Beths https://thebeths.com/ , and their new one "Expert in a Dying Field" . Jon talks more about his new love of Turnstile, https://www.turnstilehardcore.com/ , their new one "Go Glow" , and their rise to opening for Blink 182 ; as well as Toronto based Treehouse of Horror, https://treehouseofhorrormp3.bandcamp.com/ , and they lead us to talking about London ON's The Thunder Queens https://www.instagram.com/thunderqueensband/?hl=en

We play some clips from Sebadoh's Bakesale released on Subpop in 1994; Momma's Household Name on Polyvore in 2022; Turnstile's Go Glow on Roadrunner Records; and Treehouse of Horror from Songs We Wrote.

12: You've Got To Be Cruel To Be Kind: 10 Things I Hate About You

12: You've Got To Be Cruel To Be Kind: 10 Things I Hate About You

This week we take it back to 1999 but make it Shakespearean once again with 10 Things I Hate About You. The film, directed by Jill Unger and released on Touchstone Pictures, Mad Chance, and Jaret Entertainment had a true banger of a soundtrack released on Hollywood records, also in 1999. This soundtrack has been heralded as one of the most iconic of the 90's and with tracks like Letters to Cleo's cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" and Nick Lowe's "Cruel to be Kind" along with classics like George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" it isn't hard to figure out why. We discuss the film at length and Jon lays down a pretty fun fact about what song you NEED to sing in your career if you want to land a role as the next Batman Villian.

11: L-i-v-i-n': Dazed and Confused

Welcome to the episode where Jon gushes nearly the entire time about his favourite movie- we ask "is this what started Mallrats?!"- and once again, more gushing over montages, cuties, and the cast overall. We talk Dazed and Confused, the film, extensively and do get to the super male driven soundtrack (yes, the reason Abbie was never super into it). We ponder what "hoochie coo" means and spoiler- don't figure out the definition.

10: I Feel Just Like a Local God: Romeo + Juliet

10: I Feel Just Like a Local God: Romeo + Juliet

This episode we travel back to 1996 for Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet. This is a soundtrack that you HAVE to discuss if you grew up in the 90's because it had everything- heavy hitters and up and comers alike. We talk the wild, mad, sexiness of the 10 seconds of Garbage's "#1 Crush", the earworm that continues to be The Cardigans "Lovefool", the sultry beauty of Des'ree, dive deeper into where Butthole Surfers got that god awful name, and explore how The Wannadies are back, baby on TikTok.

How could we talk this soundtrack without talking about this absolutely teen life altering film and its cast; Luhrmann's rendition of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet takes on a full 90's aesthetic that somehow ended up being quite timeless. With actors like Leo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Paul Rudd, Jon Leguizomo, and Harold Perrineau, it is easy to see why the film itself had such staying power (even when the majority of audiences aren't paying the closest of attention to the Shakespearean English).

Tracks discussed in this episode: 1. "#1 Crush" Garbage 2."Local God"Everclear  3. "Angel" Gavin Friday  4."Pretty Piece of Flesh"One Inch Punch 5."Kissing You" (Love Theme from Romeo + Juliet) Des'ree  6."Whatever (I Had a Dream)" Butthole Surfers 7. "Lovefool" The Cardigans  8. "Young Hearts Run Free" Kym Mazelle   9. "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)" Quindon Tarver 10. "To You I Bestow" Mundy  11. "Talk Show Host" Radiohead  12. "Little Star" Stina Nordenstam 13. "You and Me Song" The Wannadies

09: Everybody Cut: Footloose

09: Everybody Cut: Footloose

This episode we head back to 1984 for what Jon asserts is a "near perfect film"- Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer fight for their lives to dance in Herbert Ross directed, Dean Pitchford's "Footloose". The soundtrack naturally delivers, and if you can't imagine (with plenty of suspended disbelief) that these jams could be played on a small boombox and somehow infiltrate every room, car, and crevice of a small town- then you aren't trying hard enough to feel the rhythm within. We wax and wain nostalgic about most things 80's and all things childhood and simpler times, as well as question how reckless kids really did drive in yester years.

A film that was distributed by Paramount Picture and the soundtrack released on Colombia, offers lots of laughs and Jon having to remind Abbie plenty of times who is who, in a super fun conversation.

Track listing: Kenny Loggins- Footloose; Deniece Williams– Let's Hear It For The Boy; Mike Reno And Ann Wilson– Almost Paradise...Love Theme From FOOTLOOSE; Bonnie Tyler– Holding Out For A Hero; Shalamar– Dancing In The Sheets; Kenny Loggins–I'm Free (Heaven Helps The Man); Karla Bonoff– Somebody's Eyes; Sammy Hagar– The Girl Gets Around; Moving Pictures (2)– Never

A departure from Anderson's previous soundtracks which relied heavily on the work of Mark Mothersbaugh, this album features tracks from prominent Bollywood films as well as some more western hits, including the track that one person in the chat lost their virginity to!

07: Long Tails and Ears For Hats: Josie and the Pussycats

07: Long Tails and Ears For Hats: Josie and the Pussycats

This episode we are talking the most pivotal film and soundtrack of 2001- at least in our opinion. Josie and the Pussycats is a film co produced by Universal and Metro-Goldwyn-Myer that sadly didn't have the box office clout at the time as it does cult status today. Starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson as a rebooted feline inspired rock band of the Hannah Barbara universe, the soundtrack is comprised of the biggest heavy hitters in pop and rock of all time. We dive deep into the contributions of Ana Waronker of That Dog, Kay Hanely and Micheal Eisenstein of Letters to Cleo, DeeDee Gipson, Baby Face, Adam Schelsinger of Fountains of Wayne, Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, Cancon hero Bif Naked, Matthew Sweet, along with the films directors Deb Kaplan and Harry Elfont among others that made up this fictitious super group.

This episode dives deep not only into the history of the Josie and the Pussycats franchise- talking about who was supposed to be cast as Josie initially, and some of the big names that auditioned for the part of Val- but we also wax and wane nostalgia on what this film meant for teens and girls playing music in a post grunge, current end of the manufactured boy band/ girl band era.

Some articles we mention:

06: Who's afraid of the big black bat?: Batman Forever

06: Who's afraid of the big black bat?: Batman Forever

Once again we travel back to 1995 for the heyday of big money making soundtracks that actually rock with Batman Forever. Produced by RZA and released on Atlantic Records, this soundtrack is SO much more than U2 and "Kiss From a Rose". We talk our love of Brandy, and Lenny Kravitz's covert performance on this gem; we also get deep into our love of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Offspring (pre-Pretty Fly days). If you have watched the film recently, you will completely understand why this soundtrack was the catalyst for proceeding soundtracks to add the caveat "music INSPIRED by the movie"

Track Listing: "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2 – "One Time Too Many" by PJ Harvey – "Where Are You Now?" by Brandy – "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal – "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" by Massive Attack and Tracey Thorn (The Marvelettes cover) – "Nobody Lives Without Love" by Eddi Reader – "Tell Me Now" by Mazzy Star – "Smash It Up" by the Offspring (The Damned cover) – "There Is a Light" by Nick Cave – "The Riddler" by Method Man – "The Passenger" by Michael Hutchence (Iggy Pop cover) – "Crossing the River" by the Devlins – "8" by Sunny Day Real Estate – "Bad Days" by the Flaming Lips –

05: Thanks Cancon!: Big Shiny Tunes 1

05: Thanks Cancon!: Big Shiny Tunes 1

Oh Canadiana! This episode we are talking the Canadian Monolith, Big Shiny Tunes 1, put out by Muchmusic and Musique Plus in 1996, working with labels like Warner, Universal and EMI. We focus a lot on what makes this just so damn Canadian, including CRTC CanCon requirements, Edwin's babelicious reveal in "One More Astronaut", and how no one wants to say the word "Moist" but we do talk about the band.

In this episode we wondered who were the screaming fans in the beginning of "The Good in Everyone" by Sloan- it is in fact Sloan fans at what was then thought to be one of their last concerts in 1995 at Molson Amphitheatre- thank goodness they kept it going.

Abbie also talks about the Molson Polar Ice Beach Party in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Terrorities, which she quite honestly thought could have been a wild fever dream until finding this segment from CBC's The National all about the concert with Metallica, Hole, Veruca Salt, and Moist. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr-CCgABQI4

Abbie also constantly references the amazing book by author Mark Teo, "Shine: How a Muchmusic Compilation Came to Define Canadian Alternative Music and Sell a Zillion Copies"; you can check it out: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40132081-shine

We also mention and refer to the podcast "Rave and Drool: A Chronicle of 90's Canrock" that you can catch on Apple podcasts here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40132081 ; Along with "The Big Shiny Podcast" which you can find here: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-big-shiny-podcast/id1551665314

02: It Can't Rain All The Time: The Crow

02: It Can't Rain All The Time: The Crow

This episode we talk the iconic first instalment of The Crow franchise (which we learn had even more sequels than we thought, along with the television show). The film itself is everything fantastic, but the tragic loss of Brandon Lee on set only made the film and his performance stand out more so in movie history. Accompanying this incredible film is a total banger of a soundtrack- with something for the mall goths and metal heads alike. We talk Courtney Love and Trent Reznor, and our love of Rage Against the Machine, to the sweet sounds of Medicine and Jane Sidbury.

Grab your eyeliner and fishnets and settle in for the comforting lull of constant rain, we are talking Atlantic Records 1994 release of The Crow motion picture soundtrack.

04: Screw 'Em: Angus

04: Screw 'Em: Angus

In this episode we talk the 1995 film, Angus, directed by Patrick Read Johnson and its gem of a soundtrack released on Reprise Records. We talk about how if you were lucky enough to own this soundtrack, you undoubtedly waited patiently at your local record store for this treasure of a (then) unreleased Green Day song, the fact that we get more Muffs, and why and how the Weezer song on here made Rivers Como so damn sad. This film and song track also have us talking our teen years and how absolutely iconic Angus Bethune, played by Charlie Talbert, was and is in our collective memories.

In this episode we reference episode 9 of the Waterproof Records with Jacob Givens podcast quite a bit. In this episode Givens interviews Charlie Talbert of Angus and it gives some major insight into not only the music and the movie, but all the behind scene stories that only make this film more endearing; you can check out the video of that episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRGBAwU69VY

03: The Kids in America: Clueless

03: The Kids in America: Clueless

Discussing all the 90's goodness that is the motion picture soundtrack for 1995's Clueless, written and directed by Amy Heckerling and starring favourites of ours; Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittney Murphy, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison and Brekken Myer. In this episode we chat how The Muffs have never, ever played "Kids in America" all the way through a second time, SNUG jeans, "maudlin sounds of college rock" with Radiohead, and just how dreamy young Paul Rudd is.

This pivotal soundtrack wasn't just a fun listen, it offers such a time capsule of North American youth of this era- from Cracker to Coolio, Beasties to Bosstones- this one is almost as groovy as Christian's attitude.

Tracklisting for 1995 original motion picture soundtrack on Capitol Music:

1. Kids In America - The Muffs 2. Shake Some Action - Cracker 3. The Ghost In You - Counting Crows 4. Here (Squirmel Mix) - Luscious Jackson 5. All The Young Dudes - World Party 6. Fake Plastic Trees (Acoustic Version) - Radiohead 7. Change - The Lightning Seeds 8. Need You Around - Smoking Popes 9. Mullet Head - Beastie Boys 10. Where'd You Go? - Mighty Mighty Bosstones 11. Rollin' With My Homies - Coolio 12. Alright - Supergrass 13. My Forgotten Favorite - Velocity Girl 14. Supermodel - Jill Sobule

01: It's about Reality Bites

01: It's about Reality Bites

Episode 01 - Reality Bites: It's about REALITY BITES.

This episode we chat the seminal 1994 hit Reality Bites; directed by Ben Stiller, starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Steve Zahn, Jeneane Garafulo, and Ben Stiller. The soundtrack on RCA might be the longest lasting legacy of this film and we dive into each song individually, because they are all just that good. From The Knack (and a few details about the real life Sharona) to Lisa Loeb and her record shattering song "Stay"; to the incomparable Juliana Hatfield and a few details on her virginity (and how much she didn't care about it) care of Sassy Magazine- we get into it all, while also bitching about what a dick Troy is and how Lelayna probably should have looked over a contract before handing over all her raw footage.
