52 - Faith Every Day: Lent, Resources and Ideas for a little more

52 - Faith Every Day: Lent, Resources and Ideas for a little more

Anytime that we are blessed with abundance, the abundance itself can be perverted into an obligation and a burden instead of a blessing. This is true even with the abundance of Scripture and tradition in the Catholic (and Christian faith). Sometimes, we don't know where to start, and which traditions to observe. My best advice: Just start. Start somewhere, and then do some more. Today, I'm starting with the most basic ideas for infusing more faith into every day of homeschooling. Where will you start? What will you add?

38 - Homeschooling Confidently

38 - Homeschooling Confidently

In this episode, Zara is unpacking...

1) All the reasons homeschoolers feel uncertain and ungrounded;

2) All the reasons every homeschooler deserves to be confident; and

3) Some tricks to regain your confidence during those doubtful times.

There's a pervasive cultural story telling us that homeschooling is fraught with potential pitfalls, and is therefore, is a risk to our children.  Well-intentioned nay-sayers want to protect our children from the abnormal homeschool setting.

However, when we unpack exactly *how* homeschooling is "abnormal," we discover just how superior it is, and that the risks are actually fewer by taking the "weird road," rather than the conventional.

Let's bust some myths, and confront the twisted perspective that may be preventing us from homeschooling with peace and confidence. Ready?  Let's go!

Play-do, Christmas crafts, Thank You cards, Baking, Service Project, Learning Songs, Watching or Reading Holiday Classics, Playing Games, Religious Events, Quiet Time to Read...  Do any of these sound like things you may just want to do on a whim this season?  Great!  Let' make time for it (without turning our schedules into a 1000-piece puzzle)!

Space and flexibility are the name of this game.  No more bucket lists that you never get to.  Are you ready to homeschool through the holidays?  Let's do this!

22 - Basics of a High-Value Homeschool

Let's stop thinking about designing a "minimalist homeschool" today, and instead talk about crafting a "high-value homeschool," because really, that's what we're all after.

In this episode of the Minimalist Homeschooling podcast: Simple is the New Smart, Zara talks about the 3 things to consider when reassessing, or planning your homeschool that will change your experience from more, and more of the same, to high-impact and streamlined.  Spoiler alert: those 3 things do NOT include books, curricula, equipment, or even experiences...

Whether you're ending your school year, planning the next school year, struggling with burn-out, or doing a mid-year reassessment, you'll love this refresher course on why less really is more, and how we truly can do the most important things really well!

21 - How to Homeschool with Multiple Children

21 - How to Homeschool with Multiple Children

Homeschooling multiple children - at multiple ages, with multiple preferences and talents - can be the definition of burn-out.  Often, juggling lots of kids means feeling spread too thin, and wondering whether any child is getting "enough."  This episode is all about the logistics of homeschooling with multiple children.  Zara talks about:

  • The one tactic of Minimalist Homeschooling that is critical when homeschooling multiple ages,

  • How to keep distracting little ones from completely de-railing the day,

  • The best time to homeschool,

  • Examples for teaching the same subject to all children at multiple levels,

  • The distinction between teaching time, versus independent learning,

  • Methods to avoid burn-out,

  • The types of curricula that work well (or don't), and

  • How to raise little ones who ask to start their own education.

Remember, as with all of parenting, once you think you have it figured out, everything will change again!  It's great to have some tried and true short-cuts from a homeschooling mother of 4 to navigate what will work for your family during this season.  Enjoy!

18 - Choosing Your Homeschool Subjects Simply

18 - Choosing Your Homeschool Subjects Simply

When we choose to homeschool, it's not "just" homeschooling for most of us.  In addition to learning stuff from some books, what we're really after is freedom, and excellence - on some level that is meaningful to our families.  That means that choosing subjects isn't "just" choosing what to learn.  how can we cover all of our bases, pursue all of our passions, AND keep from feeling completely overwhelmed?  In this episode, we're walking through the Minimalist Homeschooling mindset of focus to keep our homeschooling subjects simple and valuable.

Quality goals help give us confidence, clarity, and direction.  Without good goals, it's hard to create the life, or homeschool that we truly want.  Despite these great reasons, we often shy away from setting goals because, let's face it, they require hard work, maybe we feel like we don't have the time, or we assume that failure is inevitable for any number of reasons.  In this episode, I'm going deep into goals: the step-by-step of how to create them, love them, and achieve them!  You can create simple goals that make a difference, and your first step starts now...

Episode 8: How to Purge All the Homeschooling Stuff!

Episode 8: How to Purge All the Homeschooling Stuff!

Let's face it, homeschooling takes *STUFF* to a new level - one that combines the emotional drive to provide the "best," with pressure to do it "right," and a seemingly infinite number of resources that could potentially be "best," or "right."  This is a quintescential Minimalist Homeschooling episode: it's filled from start to finish with practical ways to cut through the homeschool clutter from now on.

What do you do when you already have more than you can use?  How do you manage the potentialities like "what if we do need it later?"  How many books are too many, or just enough, anyway?  How do you keep from adding more to your homeschool?  And, how do you stay sane with all. the. things. you already have, or all the things you could have?  These are the questions we're going to tackle so that you can unload the burden of stuff to gain space, and freedom in your homeschool.
