Sin Vergüenza

Dr. Nate outlines the different types of collective/communal grief. He recounts his personal experience with the death of Selena. The episode also goes into grief from violent events and large-scale trauma, and provides coping strategies.

Dr. Nate recounts the first holidays without his grandparents and how therapy has helped him "celebrate" his Grandmother's birthday. He also provides ideas on how to spend the holidays for those who are grieving, as well as ways to cope during those holidays.

Dr. Nate talks about the 7 stages of the grieving process, with a special focus on "anger."   He emphasizes how anger is a secondary emotion fueled by other emotions. The episode also gives warning signs of when it's time to seek outside help when grieving.

Dr. Nate talks about the stigma and barriers to therapy for the Latinx/e community. He recounts why he started therapy, his first meeting with his therapist, and why he chose "not to lie." The episode also goes into Dr. Nate's main takeaways from his therapy sessions and provides resources.

Season 2 Begins with an ending. Dr. Nate recounts the life and death of his grandmother Fermana Baeza. This life event was the impetus for therapy, often taboo in the Mexican American community and Latinx/e culture. This first episode of season two sets the stage for the season's themes of grief, trauma, therapy, and processes of survival.

July 4th is Antonio's anniversary of migrating to the U.S. and we kick off Fourth of July weekend with a special episode that not only celebrates Antonio's 28th anniversary, but also examines his intersectional experiences in this country. Antonio and Nate discuss intersectionality and the challenges of being Undocuqueer - undocumented and queer identities. Antonio also speaks about the first generation, Mexican, and DACA facets of his identity and navigating educational institutions.  

June is Pride month in the Estados Unidos and we continue the celebration with Becky and Elena, madre y hija. Elena, an out and proud lesbian, tells us about her coming out in rural West Texas and her relationship with her mother. Both guests talk to Nate about the importance of parental support for LGBTQ youth, machismo culture, and Latinx orgullo! 

June is Pride month in the U.S. and we celebrate with activist and self-proclaimed queer Ady Huertas. She and Nate talk about the reclamation of "queer," Spanglish, activism, and intersectionality in the LGBTQ community. May is Mental Health Awareness month y salud mental is something we don't talk enough about in the Latinx/a/o community. Nate and his guest, Victoria, address mental health challenges, body image, and Spanish as the cultural baseline for Latinidad. Victoria también habla de su pasado, her intersectionality, and the complexities of being a fat Chicana who doesn't speak proper Spanish. 

Nate speaks with his bestie Tim, a gay father and Hillcrest socialite. Tim's intersectionality of being gay, Latinx / Mexican-American, former military, and a father are centered in the episode. Nate and Tim talk about coming out after a hetero-marriage, raising children as a gay dad, therapy, and dating during the pandemic. Tim also offers advice to those in that may find themselves in his previous situations. 

Nate's longtime friend (and fairy Godfather) Danny, provides some context on being a "sin vergüenza" in the Latinx / Latina / Latino / Mexican-American culture. He and Nate discuss their complex (and sometimes sordid) past of navigating coming out, drinking problems, small towns, sex, and pump jacks! They also manage to provide important commentary on sex education, gay representation, gendered-double standards, and lettuce. This episode lays the groundwork for the transparency and shameless nature of the podcast and reaffirms that no subject is taboo or off-limits.
