151 - Esther Helga Gudmundsdottir, Director of the INFACT School
In today's season 5 premiere, I talk with Esther Helga Gudmundsdottir.  She tells us about her own journey with food addiction, how she helped herself and then how she opened one of the first food addiction treatment programs in the world.  And after doing those things, also founded INFACT, to help professionals get the training needed to help their food addict patients.  Esther has almost 20 years of abstinence under her belt and is changing the world so that everyone can find and get treatment.   Esther Helga Gudmundsdottir is a pioneer in the field of food addiction treatment. Once an opera singer and opera teacher, Esther was battling food addiction for most of her adult life until she discovered a twelve step program that changed her life. Once in recovery, she opened one of the first food addiction treatment programs in the world. The MFM program in Iceland has treated many people, some of them had tried multiple diets and even surgery in an attempt to live a healthier life. Esther’s program gives them hope and the tools to achieve long term recovery. Based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous their success rate long term is much higher than any other medical intervention. After establishing the treatment center, Esther realized that not only the patients needed help with food addiction but also the professionals. She then founded INFACT, an international training program for any type of professional willing to learn about food addiction and how to help those suffering with it. The six months online course is open to everyone and it gives you an excellent evidence based knowledge on Food Addiction diagnosis and treatment. The list of lecturers is very impressive, from Nicole Avena to Robert Lustig (author of Metabolical) to experienced counsellors on the field of food addiction like Phil Werdell. At the end of the course, attendees receive a Food Addiction Professional Certificate from the European Certification Board. On top of this impressive curriculum, Esther is the Executive Director and Chair of the Food Addiction Institute, an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to support the healing of all food addicts, founded in 2005. 149 - The Addiction Chronicles: Celebrating Leslie Colburn's "1-Year Sugarversary"
In today's episode I talk with Leslie Colburn who celebrated her 1-Year Sugarversary on May 27th! Leslie reflects on the past year through her journal entries and shares with us the 10 things that really helped her, coming to terms with and accepting that she has an addiction and she takes us through a day where she compares what it looks like off sugar and flour versus how different it would have looked a year ago.  Having struggled with sugar addiction and the restrict-binge cycle for over 35 years, Leslie has finally found what works for her and has been sugar and binge-free for 389 days. The UnSweetened Sio podcast and the monthly recaps have given her the support and tools she has needed to find hope and recovery.  She hopes to encourage others who struggle with sugar addiction by sharing her story. Leslie is a mom, a wife, and an author.  Her newest children’s books Our Goodnight Prayer and YOU: A Reason to Celebrate teach children that they are a masterpiece and encourages them to let their light shine.  Giving up sugar has allowed Leslie to celebrate who she is and has given her a new hope. 148 - The Addiction Chronicles: José Chavez
In today's episode I talk with José Chavez about his story of recovery.  José is originally from El Salvador but was born and raised in North Carolina, so he considers himself an official southern boy. He is a brother, son, and accountant by profession. With that being said, to the outside world he was a professional and “normal” person. Unfortunately, we are only as sick as our secrets, and his secret was his disease of addiction. He has always had a toxic relationship with food, since he was a child, and that was his first addiction. Throughout his life, he has been on multiple diets, suffered through multiple eating disorders, and had many addictive behaviors. They say one disease, many outlets, and that is true for José. After he was given the gift of desperation, he finally decided to embark on his road to recovery to live his true, authentic, and unadulterated self. Thanks for listening! 147 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller's 2 Year Sugarversary!
In today's episode I talk with Susan Miller and we celebrate her 2 year sugarversary!  She talks about her continued recovery and how these days she is trying to keep it simple. Susan Miller is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who decided to give up sugar, flour, and alcohol in March of 2020. After a couple of months of slips and starts she came clean on June 1st and has not looked back despite the pandemic and a personal bout with COVID 19. Still an advocate of 12-step recovery, most recently Susan has been working toward a lifestyle of simplicity including her food plan. The absence of sugar has cleared mental fog and the emotional roller coaster of the past. This has brought back enjoyment of hobbies that have been missing for a long time including stitching samplers and reading classic literature. Having an official diagnosis of OCD and battling skin conditions in spite of giving up sugar has led her back to her roots as an NTP, discovering her own bio-individuality in regard to food. Susan remains confident that sugar and ultra-processed foods are not a part of a proper human diet and she takes every opportunity to share this message. 45 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "Before" 49 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "First 2 weeks" 53 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "6 Weeks" 57 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "2 + Months" 61 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "3 Months" 74 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "8 Months" 93 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "Year One Reflections" 103 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller's "1-Year Sugarversary" 114 - Navigating the Holiday Season With Susan Miller

145 - The Addiction Chronicles: Tiffany Cornell
In today's episode I talk with Tiffany Cornell about her recovery journey.  Tiffany is 32 years old and was born with the disease of addiction. At age 6 she was already quite overweight, suffered from severe depression and as a result got sent on her first diet retreat with her mother. Ever since then not a day has gone by that she wasn’t on a diet or obsessed with the goal to lose weight and be a different person. She tried every diet out there but never managed to achieve much. After her first weight-loss surgery, which wasn’t very successful, she stumbled across the low-carb high-fat diet, which was very popular in Sweden where she was living in her early 20s, and heard about Bitten Jonsson and sugar addiction. She immediately identified with everything Bitten said and finally started making some progress. She battled for 8 years to get more than 30 days of abstinence from her trigger foods, always slipping and sliding. A constant back and forth of withdrawal and peace and weight-loss and weight gain. Even after her second weight-loss surgery, which she agreed to even though she knew it wasn’t the fix for her real issue, she struggled a lot. In 2021 she decided enough was enough. She knew she needed help from someone that actually knew about addiction and searched for help. The universe aligned and at around 30 days of abstinence, her usual breaking point, she found SUGARx Global. She joined the 5-day challenge, invested in their 9-week program and hasn't looked back. Her life has been completely transformed. She is now 13 months off her drug foods and can barely recognize herself inside and out.  She is finally doing what she's passionate about and living a life without depression. Right now, she is studying to become a food addiction specialist and primal health coach and is even running groups for SUGARx Global on the weekends. Thanks for listening! In today's episode I welcome back Matty Lansdown and we talk more about intermittent fasting and how it differs for women, how we should eat differently during different phases of our cycle and the impact diet culture has on us.  Starting out in the field of nutritional epi-genetics and spending several years working in hospitals as part of a disease research team, Matty believes that most disease and illness is not due to bad luck but as a result of poor nutrition and lifestyle choices. Matty’s extensive experience allowed him to uncover the deeper challenge people have with health which isn’t about calories or kale, but in fact mindset and behavior change. 141 - The Addiction Chronicles: Karen Hannah
In today's episode I talk with Karen Hannah and she shares her story of recovery over the past year.  Karen is 59 years old and was a sugar and carb addict for well over 50 years. She was put on her first diet at 7 years old, lied about her age to join Weight Watchers at age 14 and has yo-yo dieted her entire life. The irony was she wasn’t that overweight as a child but then she moved to a candy store when she was 13 and that set her firmly on the path for a lifetime of addiction to sugar. She dieted her way up to morbid obesity and Type 2 diabetes as an adult. All that changed when she heard about SUGARx Global almost a year ago via the Diet Doctor website where she re-watched Bitten Jonsson’s videos, then joined her Facebook group and heard about a 5-day Crush your Cravings challenge. She was desperate at that point, as by that time her diabetes was completely out of control, she was on three medications and facing daily injections, and still couldn’t stop eating sugar and carbs even though she knew they were literally killing her. She binge watched the challenge and it was like a lightbulb went on. She had a breakthrough call with Judy Wolfe and felt like she had come home. She went cold turkey and stopped eating sugar, carbs, grains, seed oils and sweeteners and has been abstinent ever since she joined on 3 May 2021. Her life has completely changed since then.  Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed this episode and were inspired in some way, I would love to hear from you. 138 - The Addiction Chronicles: Danny and Catherine Mullaney
Danny and Catherine Mullaney met early in AA recovery as young adults. Over the last 3 decades they have been living by the spiritual principles laid out in the 12 steps. Despite that, the addiction to sugar has been a thorn in their side throughout. Catherine has been addicted to sugar most of her life, been on many diets since she was 8 years old, but until last year has never attempted to arrest the addiction. Danny has made attempts to abstain from flour and sugar but has never been able to maintain long term recovery in that area. Coming to terms with sugar being a psychoactive substance has enabled them both to yield their addiction to sugar the way the alcoholic must surrender the drink. Once again, these two have another reason to trust and rely upon their Creator. Their life’s motto is taken from the AA Big Book, “The spiritual life is not a theory. You have to live it.” In this leg of their ongoing recovery their food plans differ but their commitment to exquisite self-care holistically is the same. The Mullaneys have been married for 33 years, have 3 adult children and are currently awaiting the arrival of their 6th grandchild. Catherine is a poet and a farmer in training, formerly an educator. Dan became an RN in sobriety and has entered his 25th year of nursing. Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed this episode and were inspired in some way, I would love to hear from you. 136 - Dr. Gary Fettke, MD
In today's episode I talk with Dr. Gary Fettke about his fascinating tale of not only his own health journey and cancer diagnosis, but also of being targeted by the processed food industry for speaking about the dangers of excess sugar consumption.  Dr. Fettke is an Orthopedic Surgeon and vocal proponent of nutrition being a major component of prevention and management of modern disease. In 2014, he became targeted by the processed food industry for his opinion on the perils of excessive sugar consumption, culminating in a ‘silencing’ by the Medical Board. 2018 saw a clearance of those charges with an apology from the board. In the process of that investigation, it became apparent that the issues were not just that of sugar reduction, but that of the recommendation of animal-based protein and healthy fats in a balanced diet. He has a broad understanding of the vested interests shaping dietary guidelines and particularly those around the anti red meat agenda. In today's episode, I talk with Mike Collins two years and 100 episodes after our first interview!  Mike believes sugar addiction is very real and not to be taken lightly. 123 - Life Unbinged with Kristy McCammon
In today's episode I talk to Kristy McCammon, founder of Life Unbinged. Most of Kristy’s life was spent being overweight and food obsessed.  Unfortunately, food became her friend and comfort at a very young age. This set up a lifetime of dependence on food for every emotion; sadness, joy, fear, excitement, happiness, anger, boredom, chaos – you name the emotion and food was the answer. She was in a battle with food daily. She was either white knuckling her way to stay out of the food or was overeating and bingeing – there was no in between. No matter what she tried, she simply could not let go of sugar and flour laden junk food. It had truly become a stronghold in her life that kept her enslaved to food. The idea of moderation always sounded ideal – just one piece, just one bowl, just one slice, just one….. that never worked for her. Once she had JUST ONE, her brain was actively demanding more. She was in a place of desperation and her weight was the highest it had ever been. She had an amazing husband of 25 years who loved her unconditionally, 5 amazing children, plenty of wonderful friends and family, and a loving relationship with God – truly a life that she loved, yet she could not get her relationship with food under control. She often prayed for God to deliver her from food addiction and take away all cravings for unhealthy food. She tried every diet and plan available. In past weight loss attempts, there was usually short term success, but eventually she was right back to obsessing over food and bingeing on sugar and flour filled foods. She began praying for a permanent solution out of this food obsession. She was ready to fully surrender!  After one such prayer, she came across the idea of food boundaries. This is simply the idea of following boundaries in regards to food; no sugar, no flour, 3 meals a day, and measured portions. She DID have to eat food to survive, but  DID NOT have to eat sugar and flour. She knew in that moment that her rescue boat had arrived and she just had to jump in and paddle! She began eating amazing, delicious, and abundant amounts of food. A lifestyle change, rather than a diet, was exactly what she needed! Since then, she has released 150 pounds and gone from a size 28 down to a size 12! Her head is clear and all mental food chatter is gone! She can confidently say that she found food freedom and is FINALLY free from this burden of food addiction. Sometimes, living sugar and flour free is hard, but being obese and food obsessed was much harder! Now she can FULLY ENJOY the life that she has ALWAYS LOVED. 99 - "METABOLICAL: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine", Dr. Robert Lustig
In today's episode I talk with the ONE and ONLY, Dr. Robert Lustig! He talks about his new book, "Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine," where he addresses nutrition, food science, and global health, and explains how by focusing on real food we can reverse chronic disease and promote longevity.  Describing the eight pathologies within the cell that belie all chronic disease, Dr. Lustig illustrates how they are not “druggable” but rather “foodable” (i.e. medication can’t cure what nutrition can) by following two basic principles: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He uses this science to chronicle the breakdown in our current healthcare paradigm, which has succumbed to influence from Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government. In the special chapter “Food in the Time of Corona,” Dr. Lustig addresses the way “pre-existing conditions” (i.e. diet-induced chronic diseases) make us vulnerable to succumbing to acute infectious diseases like COVID-19. He also argues that the Nutrition Facts label hides information from the consumer by omitting what’s been done to the food, which is more important than what’s in the food. Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L. is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, and Member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist, with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He is one of the leaders of the current “anti-sugar” movement that is changing the food industry. Dr. Lustig graduated from MIT in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980. He also received his Masters of Studies in Law (MSL) degree at University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2013. He is the author of the popular books Fat Chance(2012), The Hacking of the American Mind (2017), and his new book Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine, being released in May 2021. He is the Chief Science Officer of the non-profit Eat REAL, he is on the Advisory Board of the Center for Humane Technology and Simplex Health, and he is the Chief Medical Officer of BioLumen Technologies, Foogal, and Kalin Health. 91 - Food Additives With Alex Trivas, Creator of The Food Monsters Matching Game
In today's epsiode I interview Alex Trivas, who created a matching card game called "The Food Monsters" to help children and parents learn about different food additives. A writer, parent, and nutritional advocate, Alex spent over 20 years in the classroom and over 8 years on the board of Get Lit: Words Ignite ( a L.A. based teen literacy and spoken word organization that serves teenagers )  where  he saw first hand the relentless sugar and additive  assault on our children.  To combat this nutritional assault, he began to dig deep and study nutrition. He led numerous nutritional committees at schools, aiming to curb the quantity of sugar and additive laden foods  as well as to help parents and children make better decisions.  Recently he co-produced  with Matthew McConaughey’s foundation, Just Keep Livin’, a spoken word evening in Los Angeles dedicated to poetry about Type II diabetes, sugar, obesity, and teenagers. Alex received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania , his M.S.Ed. from Johns Hopkins in Education and Curriculum, and was a Klingenstein summer fellow at Columbia University. Website: https://thefoodmonsters.com/ From The Food Monsters About Us page: We are parents who have had enough. We are tired of the seemingly endless school events, parties, and celebrations that call for sugary poison and artificial dyes. We’re tired of how so many people, no matter how well -meaning, conflate sugary junk foods with love. And we are tired of the insane amount of fake foods that go into our foods and drinks. We created Food Monsters to teach kids and families and anybody else interested in the often secretive and confusing ingredients that plague so much of our foods. We want you all to learn about the Food Monsters by playing our awesome and fun Memory Match Game, and then we hope you go out and buy foods that do NOT contain The Food Monsters. 80 - The Addiction Chronicles: Shun Foreman, RN
In today's episode I talk with Shun Foreman, RN, and one of the five co-founders of SUGARx Global. Shun has been a registered nurse for twenty-one years. Her healthcare experience ranges from labor and delivery, critical care, research, analyst, and administrative nursing. As she reflects on her career, she has always sought ways to become more effective in vulnerable communities. To enhance her knowledge of the world around her, she completed a degree in human rights and social justice at Southern Methodist University. The combined experience of nursing and human rights and social justice allows her to use a unique lens on how sugar has impacted African-American communities since slavery. Since the completion of Bitten Jonsson's SUGAR certification and her peers' support at SUGARx, her beliefs about healing individuals, groups, and communities of color are much more refined.  She believes wholeheartedly that food, African American women, and the hidden harm of sugar are the three most overlooked sources of healing African American communities. Therefore, her life's work is centered around sugar awareness and creating dialogue change that will empower and promote healing in communities of color.  For far too long, vulnerable communities have been stigmatized, so let's shift the language from food deserts to fuel deserts to heal all of our communities as a whole! 78 - Sugar Addiction with Dr. Jen Unwin
In today's episode I talk with Dr. Jen Unwin from the UK about sugar addiction.  Dr. Jennifer Unwin is a Consultant and Clinical Health Psychologist with over 30 years of NHS experience. Dr. Unwin specializes in helping people with chronic illnesses to improve their lives through solution-focused brief therapy (a psychological approach based on solution-building rather than problem-solving).  She is former Chair of the UK Association for Solution-Focused Practice. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Unwin contributed to 19 clinical papers and two published books. She is also a renowned public speaker, having spoken at conferences and events worldwide. She recently retired from her NHS role in May 2019 and now dedicates her time to working alongside her husband, Dr. David Unwin, to provide innovative and results-driven patient care to those with type 2 diabetes and sugar addiction through Diabetes Digital Media (DDM). DDM is an award-winning digital health platform offering scalable and evidence-based health solutions to those with diabetes. Together, the Unwins have pioneered the use of low carbohydrate diets in the treatment of obesity and diabetes through a patient-centric model of ‘hope’. Dr. Unwin believes that “every piece of bad news, for example a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, can be turned on its head to become a golden opportunity for change.” Since the success of the low carb initiative is largely reliant on hope, the most important part is to address the patient’s personal goals. Dr. Unwin draws on her extensive psychological knowledge to promote a two-way discussion which is informative, motivating and fulfilling for both doctor and patient. Through hard work, perseverance and most of all, taking the time to understand each patient’s individual needs and goals, David and Jen Unwin have proven that low carb lifestyles work, that they last, and that they can be made accessible to all.
