80 - The Addiction Chronicles: Shun Foreman, RN
In today's episode I talk with Shun Foreman, RN, and one of the five co-founders of SUGARx Global. Shun has been a registered nurse for twenty-one years. Her healthcare experience ranges from labor and delivery, critical care, research, analyst, and administrative nursing. As she reflects on her career, she has always sought ways to become more effective in vulnerable communities. To enhance her knowledge of the world around her, she completed a degree in human rights and social justice at Southern Methodist University. The combined experience of nursing and human rights and social justice allows her to use a unique lens on how sugar has impacted African-American communities since slavery. Since the completion of Bitten Jonsson's SUGAR certification and her peers' support at SUGARx, her beliefs about healing individuals, groups, and communities of color are much more refined.  She believes wholeheartedly that food, African American women, and the hidden harm of sugar are the three most overlooked sources of healing African American communities. Therefore, her life's work is centered around sugar awareness and creating dialogue change that will empower and promote healing in communities of color.  For far too long, vulnerable communities have been stigmatized, so let's shift the language from food deserts to fuel deserts to heal all of our communities as a whole! 78 - Sugar Addiction with Dr. Jen Unwin
In today's episode I talk with Dr. Jen Unwin from the UK about sugar addiction.  Dr. Jennifer Unwin is a Consultant and Clinical Health Psychologist with over 30 years of NHS experience. Dr. Unwin specializes in helping people with chronic illnesses to improve their lives through solution-focused brief therapy (a psychological approach based on solution-building rather than problem-solving).  She is former Chair of the UK Association for Solution-Focused Practice. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Unwin contributed to 19 clinical papers and two published books. She is also a renowned public speaker, having spoken at conferences and events worldwide. She recently retired from her NHS role in May 2019 and now dedicates her time to working alongside her husband, Dr. David Unwin, to provide innovative and results-driven patient care to those with type 2 diabetes and sugar addiction through Diabetes Digital Media (DDM). DDM is an award-winning digital health platform offering scalable and evidence-based health solutions to those with diabetes. Together, the Unwins have pioneered the use of low carbohydrate diets in the treatment of obesity and diabetes through a patient-centric model of ‘hope’. Dr. Unwin believes that “every piece of bad news, for example a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, can be turned on its head to become a golden opportunity for change.” Since the success of the low carb initiative is largely reliant on hope, the most important part is to address the patient’s personal goals. Dr. Unwin draws on her extensive psychological knowledge to promote a two-way discussion which is informative, motivating and fulfilling for both doctor and patient. Through hard work, perseverance and most of all, taking the time to understand each patient’s individual needs and goals, David and Jen Unwin have proven that low carb lifestyles work, that they last, and that they can be made accessible to all. 45 - The Addiction Chronicles: Susan Miller "Before"
In today's episode I talk to Susan Miller, one of my listeners that reached out to me and was vulnerable enough to share her own current struggle with sugar addiction.  Susan is a mother and grandmother, born and raised in the South.  Her career was in the public school system as a School Nutrition Supervisor.  She retired two years ago due to a crisis of conscience because of what she was regulated to serve to students.  In 2016, on a quest to find reasons for a multitude of her own symptoms, she became certified as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.  Overweight most of her life, she was sent to Weight Watchers at the age of 10, which set her up for a lifetime of dieting and disordered eating.  Susan is celebrating 60 in August and is ready to find out what life is like without sugar and flour.

20 - Re-examining Transforming Your Home to be Chemical and Toxin Free with Jess Nolt
In last week's episode I talked about how to transform your home to be chemical and toxin free.  And then my friend Jess messaged me to point out that there was "fragrance" in a lot of the trusted brands I use.  So I had to re-examine things and went down a bit of a rabbit hole...  I watched "STINK", the amazing documentary that talks about the dangers of the word fragrance listed as an ingredient.  I re-examined all my products and wanted to pull my hair out for a little bit.  Then I took a deep breath and decided to be grateful for this opportunity to look for better alternatives.  In today's episode I interview Jess Nolt, my dear friend, about some healthy alternatives to products that use fragrance.   Resources: If you haven't already, please go on Netflix and watch STINK!  It is really well done and very informative.
