Here’s some key highlights of Marika’s outstanding track records: Marika Toivola, MA, is the most well-known Finnish pioneering flipped learning teacher. Marika is engaged in ground breaking and award-winning work to enhance mathematics teaching. She has been awarded the Mathematics Teacher of the Year in Finland Award in 2019. 2013, the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation gave Marika an incentive scholarship and recognized her efforts in promoting open access learning materials. Today, Marika is one of the most sought-after Finnish trainers of flipped learning and formative assessment. Her books Flipped Learning in Finland and Flipped Assessment – A Leap towards Assessment for Learning have encouraged thousands of teachers to join her in the long-term development of their own role as teachers. In addition to her teaching work at the lower secondary school in Teacher Trainer school a Turku University, Marika is pursuing a PhD in educational science at the University of Helsinki. Her doctoral thesis focus on teacher’s agency and identity in Flipped learning and it contributes to existing research knowledge in two ways. On the one hand, it helps understand the process of conceptualization of the phenomenon of Flipped Learning particularly from math teacher perspective. On the other, the study is contributing in particular to efforts at promoting a change in the teaching of mathematics. Marika has started her doctoral dissertation to become a better teacher. In her books, she justifies theoretically that which she has brought into practice, and not the other way around. Marika is a mother of four school-aged children, and she is passionate about ending the homogenisation of both students and teachers. She does not give praise to the current, performance-oriented focus in schools, where there is no room for failure. According to Marika, children should be educated to meet the needs of tomorrow. The future requires courage and creativity that will differentiate people from machine intelligence. Here’s some key highlights of Evan’s sterling track records. Evan Hunt has spent twenty years teaching and working in schools in the United States, Latin America, and Asia. He is currently the Principal - Head of School at Beanstalk International Bilingual School in Beijing, China. Previously he served as Head of School in Guatemala. In both settings he was able to use his experience to support the needs of bilingual and bi-cultural communities. Evan is passionate about helping unlock the full potential of a very diverse group of students. From 2013 - 2015 he was a High School Principal in Shanghai and from 2008 - 2013 an Elementary Principal in Mexico City. He has experience with both the IB Diploma and PYP Programs and overseeing athletics. Evan has a Masters in Educational Leadership from Lehigh University and recently completed a Fellowship at Columbia in New York. He is a strong believer that children learn best when teachers not only support their student’s academic needs but they also focus on helping them develop socially and emotionally. Evan resides in Colorado Springs when he is not overseas, and has two children Ana Alicia who is in Grade 10 and George who is in Grade 7. Iain is originally from Scotland and he is passionate about education as he believes that education is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. Iain has worked at the various schools in Scotland, Turkey and Egypt. Iain is now based in Shanghai, China and has been in Shanghai since 2010. Iain is an enthusiastic PYP educator and administrator who loves working on the international circuit. Iain enjoys extending learning and taking part in student welfare and musical activities. He enjoys being a risk-taker and trying new things in the classroom. Iain is musically talented. Iain was a founding member of the National Youth Choir of Scotland and the Chamber Choir. Iain sang at the 1997 Heads of the Commonwealth event in Edinburgh attended by the Queen and the late Nelson Mandela. During that time, it was the Chinese New Year period and China was having it’s Spring Festival holidays. Iain went back home to Scotland for his well deserved vacation and was in Scotland during the early stages of Covid-19 pandemic in China. Iain managed to get back to Shanghai on 2 February 2020 before the international borders restrictions were being enforced by many countries. Upon arrival in Shanghai, Iain had to adhere to the strict compliance of 14 days self-quarantine at home. Iain lived to tell and share with us all about his experiences.
