Thank you for tuning in to SkyGems Academy Podcast Series 2 final episode, Discovering 21st Century Skills.

Thank you for your encouragement and continuous support. Last year 2021 has been a challenging year for all of us. As a community, we continue to stay vigilant, agile and adapt to the challenges faced and ever changing landscape.

Covid-19 has accelerated digital transformation on a global basis. Since 2020, we have been living in the digital world. Almost everything we do now are engaged and conducted digitally; from how we learn, how we shop, to how we live. We believe that digital transformation will continue to evolve and transform the way we live, work and play.

In this new year 2022, we will continue to see more digital disruption and new ways of doing things digitally. To remain relevant, we need to have a growth mindset, observe and learn to embrace changes ahead of us. Some key areas to observe and continue to transform especially in education, finance and decentralization in many areas transforming the way we live, work and play.

SkyGems Academy Podcast Series 3, we will focus on the digital transformation topic of discussion that is happening now and will continue to impact our daily lives. Stay tuned to SkyGems Academy Podcast Series 3 entitled Everything Digital coming your way very soon!

Justin Adams is SkyGems Academy Podcast 10th speaker for Series 2 Discovering 21st Century Skills. Justin is currently the Secondary School Head of Mahsa International School, Selangor, Malaysia.

Justin was born in Swansea in South Wales, UK. He is a father of 2 sons.

Justin started off his career journey as a Chef as a Hotel Manager at Hilton National and Catering Manager at St Camillus Catering. In 2000, Justin diverted into Teaching after a Bachelor's Degree in Strategic Economics at the University of Wales, Swansea Institute in 2000. He obtained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Business in 2004.

Justin spent 13 years in the UK teaching at St Augustines’s Comprehensive, Redditch and 8 years at Sir Bernard Lovell school in Bristol. He moved to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to experience the cultures and quality of life in South East Asia.

Justin is passionate about exploring, discovering, evaluating and realising the potential strengths of the students that he meets and the colleagues that he works with.

Justin has grown and developed in the International School education system from a teacher of Business and Head of Humanities. Recently Head of Teaching and Learning/ Head of Secondary school and Acting Principal of MAHSA International School.

His interests  are personal development, traveling, reading and meditation. Justin is a passionate, balanced, calm, mindful and positive individual who loves to communicate, connect, and build relationships.

SkyGems Academy Podcast Series 2 Discovering 21st Century Skills Episode 9 speaker is Alex Paltos.

Alex Paltos comes from Melbourne, Australia and has been an educator for over 22 years. Over half of that time has been spent working outside his native Australia in the UK, China and the Middle East, including working for international schools or schools that have an ‘international footprint’.

A recent role was as Founding International Principal of Meisha Academy by Haileybury, in Guangzhou, China. It was a joint venture international school between Haileybury Australia – one of the most academically successful private schools in Australia in recent years – and Vanke Real Estate – a construction giant located in the south of China.

Alex also founded one of the first Cultural and English Immersion and Leadership Companies in China for students wishing to visit Australia.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors for AustCham South China and Xiaomei, an Education Technology company based in Hong Kong. He has a Bachelor of Arts (History and Politics), Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Monash University, Masters in Education Management and Leadership and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Sydney – he is also currently pursuing a PhD.

Alex has worked in China for over six years and his current role is as Principal of one the most prestigious IB international kindergartens in Guangzhou. In his spare time Alex enjoys playing AFL, running marathons, keeping fit, eating Cantonese food, studying Mandarin and walking his two dogs and spending time with his two young boys.

I’m a Masters in Child care and education. My key strengths are being open-minded, resilient, and patient. Being open-minded helps me to play a vital role as a facilitator and as a team member.  Being resilient gives me the strength to overcome overwhelming situations in a peaceful manner.  For understanding the learners in a class, patience is very important to make them feel that they are valuable members and there is someone who is always ready to hear them out.

He has 20 years of working experience in international education and British & American curriculum certification, including more than 10 years of International Baccalaureate (IB) experience.  He took up various managerial roles in the education field, serving as the principal of Cambridge International School, American High School and IB schools in different regions.  He was appointed as an advisory member of “Disability Discrimination Ordinance under the Education Bureau (EDB) of Hong Kong. He also works as a mentor of the Education University of Hong Kong. The contribution that Principal CHEUNG has made is recognized.  He won the “Principal of the Year” award at the Vision of International Schools (VIS) Conference 2020 and award for excellence in education administration in 2021.

Guy is an Australian qualified and Victorian registered teacher and School leader with over 32 years’ experience both Internationally and within Australia.

His experiences in education include roles such as: CEO/Headmaster, Whole School Principal, Co-Principal, Deputy Principal Preparatory – Year 12, Head of Senior School, , Head of House (Pastoral and Wellbeing Leader), Director of Personal Development, Health, Physical Education and Sport K – 12, Head of Physical Education and GSV Sport K – 12, Head of Department, Head of Year, Outdoor Education and PE teacher.

Most recently, Guy has held the role of International School Principal within Malaysia from 2015 – 2017 and then again from 2018 – 2020. Prior to moving back to Kuala Lumpur in December 2018, Guy was the CEO/Headmaster at Grange School in Ikeja, Lagos (A Co-educational British Curriculum R – 11 Day & Boarding School) that was ranked in the top 100 International Cambridge Schools in the world. During his time at Grange School he set up the Grange Football Academy that was linked to the English Premier League.

Whilst in Malaysia, the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) has requested that Guy provides a variety of lectures and workshops for teachers, students and parents on 21st Century learners/learning and how to be an engaging global 21st Century teacher/parent. Guy was also the keynote speaker for the inaugural Malaysian MOE International & Private School Forum that was held in early 2020.

On a personal level, Guy holds a number of Australian Coaching qualifications and has been involved in coaching student athletes from School to Youth Olympic level back in Australia. His Sports include – Track and Field, Cross Country, Water Polo, Swimming, Soccer, Rugby Union, Rugby League, AFL, Tennis, Cricket, Hockey and Life Saving. As a young athlete Guy was also fortunate to represent at State and National level in a number of sports.

Outside of his own school, Guy devotes his time to assisting school owners, boards, and executive leaders predominantly in International Schools throughout Africa and South East Asia.

Guy has also taken some time out to speak at International and local Conferences in the area of 21st Century Learning and Teaching, Assessing, Reporting, Teacher Appraisal and the importance of “Connection” within modern day Schools.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Tim Allen. Dr Tim Allen or more fondly known as Tim was awarded as One of Top Ten New Principals by Forbes China 2021. Congratulations Tim! What an outstanding achievement! Totally well deserved.

Originally from Michigan in the United States, Tim is a career educator who has for nearly the last 20 years called Shenzhen, China home. Leaving the U.S. in 2002, he has worked in public, charter, private, and international school settings. Tim is currently the Principal/Head of School at Buena Vista Concordia International School, a small, K-8, coed institution. The student population is mainly Chinese nationals looking to enter western universities in the future.

Tim earned his Bachelors in Elementary Education in 1995 and immediately moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked as a classroom and Physical Education teacher. While in Texas he began work on his Master’s in Education Leadership, following this with his Doctorate in Educational Administration which he finished in 2010. He published dissertation is in the area of English Language Learning among International School students.

Leaving the U.S. in 2002, he has worked in public, charter, private, and international school settings. Tim is currently the Principal/Head of School at Buena Vista Concordia International School, a small, K-8, coed institution. The student population is mainly Chinese nationals looking to enter western universities in the future.

Tim earned his Bachelors in Elementary Education in 1995 and immediately moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked as a classroom and Physical Education teacher. While in Texas he began work on his Master’s in Education Leadership, following this with his Doctorate in Educational Administration which he finished in 2010. As an educational leader for many years, Marcela learns every day from the educators and children around her. Being a leader is more like being a facilitator, as teachers and children will do it all.

“I do think that the current Covid-19 pandemic situation has made us think as human beings, our relationships with the world. It has made us rethink education, relationships, jobs, essential things in life, what's essential, what it's not. Covid-19 has proven to us that we as human beings have to stop and think about how do we relate with the world around us. As educators, how do we educate children in difficult situations, and empower them not only academic content, but different skills to be able to survive, live and learn during these challenging times,” said Marcela.

Marlon holds a bachelor's degree in Philosophy and a master's degree in Education. He also completed specializations in Education Mediated by Technology, Teaching English as a Second Language, and earned a professional certificate in Leadership and Management in Education. After working as a Spanish Teacher and Instructional Technology Coordinator in Tianjin, China, he returned to his native Colombia where he is currently the Secondary Principal at La Sierra International School.

“It has been an interesting time. We have struggled.  We have cried. We have been frustrated. We have been insulted by people who are frustrated. We have listened, we have understood and we have shown compassion. We have shown care and concern. We have supported each other. We have taught and we have learned as well. We have been a team. I keep saying ‘we’, ‘we’, ‘we’. That's why we have been successful," said Marlon.

Emma is currently the Dean of Academics and Student Culture at True North Classical Academy in Miami, Florida, USA.

A Singapore Math Specialist, Emma has acted as a consultant
to schools in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. She was honored to be a Mathematics Consultant for the Florida Department of Education when they were writing the B.E.S.T Standards for Mathematics to replace Common Core in  2019.

“It became an adventure, a very humbling adventure, trying to figure out how best to teach in a way we had never taught before. The students became our guide,” said Emma.

Hatem started developing his passion towards teaching in 2005. His K-12 education career started at Oasis, a leading IB school in Cairo, Egypt in 2012 and never looked back. From teaching adults to training teachers, then teaching k-12 and joining the International Baccalaureate Educator Network (IBEN), Hatem finally found his purpose.

Transformational leadership and change management drive Hatem’s day to day practices in educational leadership positions he takes. Having a clear vision and empowering teams to deliver and reach their goals in a timely manner without adding much stress to the process is a practice he enjoys.
