#200 Steve Guest – Elite recruitment specialist and bestselling author of 'Top Biller'

#200 Steve Guest – Elite recruitment specialist and bestselling author of 'Top Biller'

Today we spoke with Steve Guest – Elite recruitment specialist and author of 'Top Biller'

Steve has been recruiting for 17 years. He has placed over 800 individuals into permanent roles in the UK. Podcast host of 'The Guestlist with Steve Guest', Amazon best-selling author across multiple categories for “Top Biller – The Life of a Recruiter” (globally the highest reviewed recruitment book on Amazon), and founder of the online recruitment training platform - “12 Week Recruitment Mastery Programme” – training recruiters on a global scale, Steve is still recruiting (the doing), but also now mentoring, coaching and teaching.

We ask when did Steve realise he could do this, and what attributes he sees in his kids that could make them recruiters too! Steve talks about the importance of being early for everything, what separates successful recruiters (such as organisation, consistency, integrity, and honesty) and what pushed him into driving his book sales. Steve knows his why, and he embraces sharing his journey and giving value now.

How fitting Steve was guest #200 for SEPR...going for 3 years and 7 months, since May 2019. Now it's time for a pause to consolidate our learning.

Thanks for being here! Remember - Sleep, Eat, Perform, Repeat.

Daniel brings a wealth of experience at the highest level of performance nutrition, having worked with Leinster rugby and the Dublin footballers. He brings a plethora of practical, implementable and simple advice for people looking to build better nutrition and hydration habits. #190 Caleb Gardner - Innovation Strategist and Change Management Expert

Description

Today we spoke with Caleb Gardner - Innovation Strategist and Change Management Expert

Caleb is a founding partner of 18 Coffees (we now know what the company name means by the way!), a management consulting firm and community for forward-thinking leaders building more diverse, ethical, inclusive, and effective organisations. There is a core focus on change management, strategy, and communications to help companies grow. Author of 'No Point B', Caleb helps leaders navigate change initiatives, and unpacks disruption, and innovation. His background includes digital leadership, entrepreneurship, and social impact; he ran the digital programme for President Obama.

We spoke about what it was like working alongside Barack Obama, imposter syndrome, and a willingness to engage with projects outside his comfort zone...how he even wrote the book! Caleb shares his thoughts on relationships with tech, what's coming, and change-making. Innovation is a central part of this dialogue, in relation to when someone is excelling but has the wherewithal to consider innovation to stay ahead, for that edge.

#189 James Laughlin - High Performance Leadership Expert and Former 7-time World Champion

Today we spoke with James Laughlin - High Performance Leadership Expert and Former 7-time World Champion

Music took James on an extraordinary journey around the world, winning and travelling along the way. He ended up in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he settled and created his High Performance Leadership Programme - lead yourself, lead others, lead always, with guests such as Kieran Read and Steve Hansen, former captain and head coach of the All Blacks. James works with elite players as a mental skills coach with Canterbury Rugby, and with executives in relation to purpose, habits, and overall leadership development.

We unpacked overcoming major tough moments such as the Christchurch earthquake, a miscarriage and splitting up with a partner. We learned about what young Finn, James' son teaches him everyday, and why boundaries are essential for parenting. There was a fascinating dialogue around identifying and contacting mentors, why music was James' calling at a young age, and when James found his purpose.

Legacy of Dad...what a line!

#187 Bradley Franco - Yoga Trainer and Mental Leadership Coach

Today we spoke with Bradley Franco - Yoga Trainer and Mental Leadership Coach Brad moved from Orange County, California to Cologne, Germany - we asked why to open up this very insightful dialogue. Currently, Brad is training football teams with regard to their athletic programme - movement quality, yoga, flexibility, recovery protocols, breathwork, and meditation practices. He also teaches yoga privately in Germany and online, grounded in his education in psychology. Brad highlighted the different mentality between a player and an athlete from his perspective, what a good yoga teacher does, and the benefits of a yoga class across different age groups and backgrounds. We dived into the differences between online and in-person engagements, the other big positives yoga gives that are often not highlighted...and how to build yoga buy-in into a routine for skeptics. Echoing a recent chat with Craig White, Brad highlighted the value of quiet time for oneself, elaborated on interoception...and what a typical week looks like for Brad himself, which was very interesting.

#186 Dr Ford Dyke - Human Performance Consultant

Today we spoke with Dr Ford Dyke - Human Performance Consultant

Dr. Dyke collaborates globally with high-level performers such as corporate executives, elite athletes, physicians, academicians, first responders, and military personnel. His methodology integrates components of his Professorship at Auburn, Team USA Athlete career in handball (which he unpacked for us!), and experience as a performance coach for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Dr. Dyke's education, professional experience, and personal journey led to the creation of his own brand and ethos, which is a multidimensional space for the human experience.

We asked about how much of a role growing up in Florida had on Ford's path to mindfulness practice and presence. He took us through live on-air mindfulness practice - and it felt wonderful! Do it yourself!

He spoke about the research and benefits behind exposure to green and blue spaces for downtime and exercise...and what a typical week looks like for him, balancing rest and recovery with work and training. As Dr. Dyke says, welcome to the human experience.

#185 Niamh Brady - Productivity Coach, Founder of A Better Workday, and author of ‘Remote Working Essentials’

Today we spoke with Niamh Brady - Productivity Coach, creator of the Better Workday programme, and author of ‘Remote Working Essentials’
Niamh stood out to us at the recent IBEC KeepWell Summit 2022 in Croke Park - her clarity of thought and simplicity of message is a rare thing these days. Her mission is to help create a better workday for professionals worldwide, with her areas of focus being wellbeing and productivity in the workplace...we love this at Hauora!
We unpacked her transition from employment to being a self-employed business owner, and when she recognised she needed that change. She is considered a thought leader around Burnout in Ireland - and shed light on early identifiers of it, and the story of the truck that caused her to look closely at her work - life balance. Niamh spoke about boundaries, working from home, and its challenges for working women and men (especially those with young families), work intensity during a typical day and week, fallow fridays - and the necessity of taking genuine time off from work to recharge...with a plan around the year being essential. This was jam-packed with actionable tools, and simple pieces of advice - enjoy!

#183 Ben Darwin - Director Gain Line Analytics, Former Australia Pro Rugby Player and Coach

Today we spoke with Ben Darwin - Director Gain Line Analytics, Former Australia Pro Rugby Player and Coac.

Ben had to retire from professional rugby prematurely due to a severe neck injury. Here's the story about what he's done since, and why he went this way...examining team cohesion and teamwork indices that contribute to consistent winning and on-field success. Ben propped for the Brumbies and the Wallabies, before embarking on analytics and forward coach positions with teams such as Western Force, Melbourne Rebels and Suntory in Japan. His company, Gain Line, founded in 2013, is changing the game around data analytics revealing that great teams are the product of the connections and linkages within.

There is a wonderful dialogue around the structural layers that drive cohesion in teams, namely shared experiences, combinations and the overarching system - one for pro sport and business. As distinct from other operations and management consultancies in the industry, Gain Line places a strong focus on data analysis and quantitative research. We really appreciate this as the solutions are backed by evidence and real-world experience, like our worlds in physio and sports medicine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

#182 John O’Regan - International ultrarunner, Martial artist and Running coach

Today we spoke with John O’Regan - International ultrarunner, Martial artist, and Running coach
John has conquered 7 marathons on 7 continents. This is a story of how a recreational runner learned about his body, studied physiology, and educated himself on the importance of preparation and planning…to conquer remarkable running feats, ultimately representing Ireland in several categories now. He competes in ultratrail, 100k and 24 hour and has a podcast called 'No Finish Line'.
John defined ultrarunning for us and discussed why this sport is not crazy - it is about passion. He loves to run and loves where it brings him. Hear about a journey from the Marathon des Sables to Swedish survival training, to the Yukon, Poles - and what’s next. John leaned into resilience, how to build it…and how to overcome the moment after the race, when you feel low - when the race is over. We learned about the value of discipline and sticking to a course for a specific goal, and how to listen to your body when you are physically and mentally challenging yourself. This was inspiring stuff!

#181 Cameron Schwab - CEO for 25 years in AFL, Leadership mentor and Founder Design CEO

Today we spoke with Cameron Schwab - CEO for 25 years in AFL, Leadership mentor and Founder Design CEO

Cameron had the most impressive studio we have seen - a fireplace, AFL memorabilia and a classy ambience; it gave an inside peek into the world of Cameron…class, and quality. Cameron, an artist, storyteller, and writer, has been a CEO for 25 years with experience with Melbourne Football Club, Richmond, Fremantle Dockers - and leading the AFL also as CEO. His company, Design CEO, a leadership and strategy business, focuses on helping leaders navigate the hardships and ambiguity of modern leadership.

Cameron, a graduate of Harvard Business School today spoke about being a leader, rather than doing, and what it was like holding the role of CEO at the age of 24, the youngest to hold this position in AFL history. He proclaims to “never forget how hard it is”…the travails of a leader, and Cameron opened up for us, displaying remarkable vulnerability - unpacking the lessons of being a father to a trans child, broken families, and having had mental health challenges himself. Today we spoke with Jack Kavanagh - Pharmacist, Speaker and on the Board of Directors of the National Disability Authority.

Every so often you have a conversation that changes you, that makes you reflect on perspective...this was one of those conversations.

In 2012 Jack suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury leaving him with 15% muscle function. Jack has challenged the perceived limitations of his situation every day since, with the question being 'why not me?', rather than 'why me?'. In 2014 Jack gave the acclaimed TEDx Talk “Fearless Like A Child, Overcoming Adversity” - watch it. Jack has also received several international awards for his documentary Breaking Boundaries.

As a Pharmacist, Speaker and Facilitator Jack is passionate about the value of health and wellbeing as drivers for business performance coupled with cultivating diverse and inclusive environments, where people belong and are valued. #170 Joy Neville - Former Ireland Rugby International and Current IRFU Referee

Today we spoke with Joy Neville - former Ireland women's rugby union international and current IRFU referee
Joy is a former Ireland women's rugby union international and a current rugby union referee. As a player Neville represented Ireland at both the 2006 and 2010 Women's Rugby World Cups, captaining the first Ireland team to defeat France in that period. After retiring as a player she took up being a referee. She has taken charge of matches in the Women's Six Nations Championship, the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series and the Rugby World Cup, including the 2017 final.
Neville has also achieved a number of firsts as a female referee in the men's game - a Pro14 match when she took charge of a 2017-18 fixture between Ulster and the Southern Kings - wait for the story from that game! This also saw Neville become the first woman to referee a top-level men's rugby union match in the UK. She is professionally contracted with the IRFU, has been a TMO, and is based in Limerick.
Today we spoke about her journey to being a ref from a player, what makes an excellent referee - and what the prep and post-game processes look like. - (8:04) Owen Eastwood: Performance Coach, and Author of 'Belonging: The Ancient Code of Togetherness'

#168 A Season of Reflections Pt. I with Steve Gera, Sonia O'Sullivan, Graham Betchart and Dr Michael Gervais

On this episode you will hear from

- Steve Gera (03:34): Innovation specialist, former NFL coach, CEO Gains Group, Leaders in Sport consultant and former US Marine

- Sonia O'Sullivan (06:25): Olympian in track and field, lover of coffee, and inspiration to all Irish people

We hope this medium allows you to take the lessons from the very best and apply them in your life.

Our key takeaways from this episode are:

1 – High performance is not reserved for those in elite sport or business. It is in our day-to-day – it’s relative to each one of us, no matter where we are. As Vince Lombardi says ‘the quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavour”.

2 – Setting a direction is essential. Goals help us create a roadmap for where we want to go.

3 – We cannot influence the future without being present today...and impacting this moment!

We unpacked the wealth of time versus the wealth of money, how Harrison pivoted into teaching - and what his 5 day course is all about. Today we speak about when Joe knew he was good at this, and his upbringing from where he grew up in Ireland - Tyrone, Donegal; we hear about history and culture around Northern Ireland and Ireland.

We dive into what endurance racing is all about, passion and performance, escapism on the bike, finding the way in the world with the bike as a tool, teamwork - it's so much more than one person, and mindset. Joe speaks with us about his book - "Going the Distance - the making of a world-class endurance cyclist", Team Joe Barr, the Race Around Ireland, and the epic Race across America, now a category winner on Vimeo called "Reborn in the USA". Sophie represented Team Ireland at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in the mixed 4x400m relay event, along with Cillín Greene, Phil Healy, and Chris O’Donnell; she helped Team Ireland make history, with a 51.58 second split as Ireland’s relay team set a new National Record and a place in an Olympic final for the first time ever, finishing 8th.

She has certainly had a glittering start to her running career. Sophie competed in the women's 400m event at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships. She ran a PB in Belfast of 52:32 last year, which is 5th on the Irish all-time list...and was a part of the women’s 4x200m team that finished 2nd at the World Relay Championships in Poland in May 2021, in a national record of 1:35.93, finishing just behind the host nation.

Sophie, who has a degree in genetics and cell biology from DCU, born in Wexford, has firmly helped place her county on the map, along with their other famous sports star, the Irish rugby player Tadhg Furlong. We speak about what Wexford is also known for, her training schedule, and the intricacies of her routine. We explore the differences between racing indoors and outdoors, and which one she prefers. We unpack breathwork as prep, those final moments before a race starts, preserving the ego and grounding when fame comes, race splits...and feeling fast versus what the stop-watch reveals.

Today we dig into the story of the shrink for entrepreneurs...how Peter earned that name, and what that part of his career involved. We delve into life coaching, accountability, planning, structure, goal setting methodology, weekly rituals and high leverage work...all key for this time of year. Peter tells us how Commit Action scaled, and why it's working, from a sole entrepreneur start-up to a team of many, and a big success.

We explore the definition of effectiveness and productivity and how they are so different...in relation to value creation and output. Deep focus work is discussed, and the furious chasing down of goals, and gaps for recovery...also that life goes in seasons sometimes. This is a really enlightening conversation about how a vision for a business model became a reality...what it took, and what it's becoming.

#151 Owen Eastwood - Performance Coach, and Author of 'Belonging: The Ancient Code of Togetherness'

#151 Owen Eastwood - Performance Coach, and Author of 'Belonging: The Ancient Code of Togetherness'

Today we spoke with Owen Eastwood - Performance Coach, and Author of 'Belonging: The Ancient Code of Togetherness'.

Owen is a performance coach with vast and diverse experience with high-profile elite sports teams around the world with a speciality around identity, storytelling, and culture. He has worked with the British Olympic Team, the English national football team, Harlequins RFC, Scotland rugby, the Command Group of NATO, the South African cricket team, the Royal Ballet School, and high performing corporate settings.

Owen, a New Zealander based in the UK with roots from Ireland has a unique approach that looks to an evolutionary understanding of a team or organisation, leadership dynamics, cohesion, wisdom from our ancestors, and what contemporary institutions do very well.

Today we start with the imagery on the front of the book and its origins, and why belonging is critical for reducing anxiety, improving confidence, and instilling trust. Owen unpacks the essence of the working environment and culture moving forward, psychological safety, and why a sense of connection and belonging is vital.

We enquire about sustaining success with teams where there is staff and player turnover, emotional availability for young professionals, and the harmony between boundaries and autonomy - a profound concept called tapu noa. A highlight of this one, Owen eloquently shares the Maori concept of 'whakapapa' - for the sun is shining on us now.
