Incredible Library Project in Gili Air with Lucy - The Magic of Giving Back
🤔 ABOUT THIS VIDEO 👇  The Library Project Gili Air Blog Post  Reading is for everyone. Even in the digital age where physical books are quickly becoming antiquated, the ability to read is critical to success in life. Developing literacy doesn't happen overnight. It requires explicit instruction, practice, and patience. But, the very first step is cultivating a child’s interest in reading and ensuring access to high-quality, engaging text.    I had heard many people mention that there is a literacy gap on Gili Air. Students just aren't into reading, especially when presented with a choice between a book and a hand phone - social media always prevails. It wasn't until I first visited the existing library at SDN 1 in January that I recognized the seriousness of the problem.  Walking through the threshold under the sign, Perpustakaan, we found a room full of dusty shelves with hundreds of books shoved in every which way and overflowing into piles on the floor. The assorted furniture was haphazardly arranged and after winding through the bookcases like a maze, there was only more rubbish and debris to be found. This wasn’t a library, it was more of an overlooked storage room.  When educated adults allowed the library to become and stay such a disorganized place, how could the children possibly be expected to cultivate a desire to read? Go back in history, look at art from between the 15th to the 19th century, and all the women are painted naked with curves bulging left, right and centre… Unashamed, unapologetic, adored and loving themselves.    But body positivity covers so much more… skinny, short, tall, old, young, wrinkles, stretch marks, genitals, colouring, body hair, sexual preferences, gender preferences, shaved head, dreadlocks, tattoos, freckles, scars and disabilities to name but a few… what a beautiful mixing pot! I spend a part of the year in Indonesia, Bali is one of my homes, it is the biggest Muslim country in the world and sex is taboo.    Tribes, why?   There is a little story about a queen, her husband was at war, hence she was missing something sexually. She invited her servant to come and please her. The servant was so nervous that he was shaking and he could not penetrate her. The vibration outside her lady bits birthed the Queen’s sacred water (she squirted!), a river was born, and then lake Kivu.    The tribes' daughters are told the story by their mothers, and the tribes' sons are told this story by their fathers. 🤔 ABOUT THIS VIDEO 👇    Detox?!  It is such a BIG WORD, right?   I’m a WILD party animal.   I LOVE to party.   I LOVE food.   I LOVE to have a drink(s).    And above all, I LOVE pasta. I could eat pasta every day.    If someone were to tell me: you can not eat pasta (carbs) anymore for the rest of your life,  It simply would not be possible for me.   It just doesn’t work. That’s why I came up with my SLOW DETOX PROGRAM. A detox program for the people who love living.    Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of fasting and eating. There is no restriction on what to eat or drink, but rather when you should eat. There are several different intermittent fasting methods.  Breaking the fast:  The thing you don’t want to do when breaking a fast is to have too many carbohydrates. Slow Down with Carl Honore - The Fascinating Pandemic Workshop - Tiempo Justo - Gili Home of Slow
🤔 ABOUT THIS VIDEO 👇  Have you heard of Carl Honore?  He wrote the book #SLOW, which still to this day remains the person that guided me into realising that Slow is not just a name, but it’s an entire movement. Carl got there because he needed to, he was a very fast person, every moment of his day was a race against the clock. He was just rushed all the time, and he knew that it was wrong, but he couldn’t stop.  When you get stuck in fast forward, it often takes a wake-up call, that makes you realise that you are living way too fast. There is a light that goes on and says: that’s it, I cannot do this speed anymore, and you have a burnout or fall sick.  Carl didn’t have that, he started speed reading Snow White to his child, he became an expert at turning multiple pages at once hoping his child didn’t notice. When he picked up a book that said the “one-minute bedtime stories”. His first reaction was, I need that book now! His second reaction was a lightbulb going on thinking, am I really in such a hurry that I am prepared to send my son to bed with a soundbite, instead of a story? He had an out-of-body experience and could see himself from above.  He realised he was racing through his life, instead of living it. He pushed pause and stopped. He had hit rock bottom and began to change. 🤔 ABOUT THIS VIDEO 👇   Mindfulness for the busy people. Do you think it’s possible to incorporate mindfulness into your busy life, while you’re on the go?  What is mindfulness? It is cultivating present moment awareness, realising that you are distracted by your thoughts, which is inevitable, And certainly not a sign of failure. Noticing your distraction is mindfulness. Congratulate yourself for it.    The best part is that mindfulness can dramatically improve your busy life. You must purposely make an effort to practice mindfulness. But it is scientifically proven to have benefits from a very wide range of common difficulties.   I like to compare it to that moment where I’m sitting on the beach watching the sunset listening to my favourite music. I bring awareness to my experience in a purposeful and particular way, without judgement nor defence, with open curiosity and acceptance.    Everything is a question of perception. Two similar objects appear differently because of the difference in the mind that perceives them.   I am fully present in the moment. I’m not judging, or evaluating. I am not reflecting back on memories, I am not looking forward to foresee the future, I’m not trying to problem solve, or avoid any unpleasant aspect of the present situation. It is like a microscope, clearly presenting what is there. The now, not referring to the past, nor the future.   It is the part of the brain that acknowledges what is, and how it is. It includes the process of thinking itself, it is a part of you that knows,  and that is aware that you are thinking: it is you.  That part does not produce opinions, thoughts, nor judgements. It simply notices, it is the part of our mind that is called our observing mind, also known as awareness. Awareness always has space for the most troublesome thoughts, and the strongest emotions. It somehow knows that sooner or later the weather will change. Your awareness is a little like the sky. While the thoughts and emotions are like the clouds, or the weather passing through. I like to remember the sky is never overwhelmed by the weather conditions. There is enough room for the strongest storms, even for most ferocious hurricanes. EXPLORE Close your eyes for the next 10 seconds, start noticing and acknowledging all the sensations in your body. What is it you’re sitting on? Are you lying down or standing? What sensation do you have when your bottom meets the chair, or the bed. The sole of your foot, on the floor, or inside your shoe... Curiously explore, I feel the sense of touch of your body touching the surface. Acknowledge the sensation, hold it in your awareness, and then focus your attention on it. Let go of any judgement  that would come up on your mind linked to the exercise. We are looking for ways to escape, drugs, ...    The concept of slowing down revolves around rethinking your speed of life.    When is the last time you were alone with your thoughts? Slowed down, no distractions, no background noise, mastering the art of doing nothing. For fast-acting relief from stress, try slowing down - Lily Tomlin Slow is beautiful. Belonging to the slow movement doesn’t mean you have to be slow all the time. I also dare to take the fast boat. Ha! It doesn’t mean you have to be serious all the time. I am serious, but I never take myself seriously. I wrote another book, coming out next month, “Slow Intimacy”. I tend to slow down intimately, simply because it’s appeared to be most exquisite. Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it. - Soren Kierkegaard I also took the habit of cooking from scratch, and occasionally use the microwave, not the other way around… #slowdown Today a pig reached 220 pounds, and is slaughtered before losing its baby teeth; a couple of centuries ago, it lasted 5 years to grow up to 130 pounds. Carl Petrini launched Slow Food. Slow Food at the heart is about pleasure, eco- gastronomy. We believe eating well goes hand in hand with protecting the environment. Enjoyably dining with friends and family, permaculture, farm sustainably, using artisanal products, local and fresh goods. Taking the time to eat a nice meal, in a nice setting, is just as important. I remember eating my sandwich at the wheel driving to my next meeting. Barely digested, I was already getting the next contract signed. I felt like I had to be working all the time. Do you feel like if you spend less work at your desk, you’ll get less work done? I’ve changed that habit, and I take time to eat, I even allow myself to have a nap after my digestive walk. Taking the time to eat relaxes me. I do things in full conscience. I allow myself to have a sensual moment with myself. When I start working again, in the afternoon, I get a lot more done. Simply because it feels like a new day is starting my brain is well-rested, and fresh again.
