Over 130 episodes,
Nearly a million downloads - families listening all over the world.
Thank you! ~Miss Pam xoxo

When you bring baby home, there are a million things to consider and navigate as everyone gets to know each other in this first year. Things are changing daily — heck, hourly!

The first year is also a tender time even as it is gruelling. You want to do the best for your baby, keep him dry and fed, soothe her upsets, provide a little fresh air, make sure he’s not too cold, protect her from the sun, etc.
And you are, hopefully, falling in love.

While taking care of her physical needs, you also know it’s important to talk, sing, read and play with your baby. You know that you are your child’s first teacher, the single most important key to their brain and language development.

It’s all a bit, well, overwhelming. Eeeek!

Enter SMALL TALK BABY PODCAST. I believe every family with a baby under 3 years needs my podcast, wherever they are in the world. Why? That’s easy…

SMALL TALK BABY PODCAST (STBP)

FUN. +Play is the work of children, from birth.

It is through play that babies learn about the world—themselves and others. Every episode of STBP is a screen-free invitation to play with words and language. The podcast helps families build a routine around language development.

RICH AND EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE. +Food for a baby’s brain.

It is designed to foster language development in a joyful way: it grows your baby’s vocabulary and comprehension, stimulates your baby’s imagination and curiosity through developmentally appropriate books, and teaches your baby about abstract concepts like emotions, counting—all without the distraction of a screen.

BABIES’ BRAINS AND ADULT MODELLING. +Repetition is the key to learning.

I used my 35 plus years of early literacy expertise to create this screen-free tool for a young child and the parents or caregivers. Every episode is theater to a baby’s ears, capturing their attention with the sounds within words, the music, intonation, rhyme and rhythm, volume and texture and with movement, both fine and gross. By listening regularly with your little one, you are building a shared wordplay/storytime repertoire of over 100 songs, rhymes, poems and fingerplays that you learn by repetition, alongside your little one.

SCREEN-FREE

Once your child knows what to expect, they will become intent on listening and participating in the fun you always have with them during this time. Turn it on during fussy moments in the car or high chair, during tummy time or the witching hour!

I promise you that sharing 1 or 2 episodes every day over a 12 month period, will help your baby become a youngster with a wide vocabulary, comprehension and experiences through the songs and books I share.
Every episode reinforces the rhythm and structure and diversity of language and gets you using new words in fun ways.

+Please, Baby, Please by Spike and Tonya Lewis Lee

+Tic Toc Dog by Emma Dodd

++Vocabulary words:

Loopy, goofy, sniff, sags, zig-zag, paws, and soo many more!

RESEARCH:

People use similar facial expressions when communicating with babies and dogs.

Researchers identified six specific expressions that participants used when interacting with babies and dogs, but not when interacting with another adult.

The ‘special happy’ expression was particularly common in interactions with both babies and dogs, the team reports. It is thought to express genuine, intense happiness and to signal a strong desire to interact. With a pre-verbal infant, it functions as a clear expression of engaged, positive feeling towards that child. Clearly, adults – or at least adults with both a baby and a dog – use it to try to signal the same thing to their non-verbal dog.

🅷 Black History Month - Maya Angelou for Babies!

🅷 Black History Month - Maya Angelou for Babies!

RE-RELEASE!

This episode is perfect for babies, toddlers up to age 4. Maya Angelou for little ones? Ohh yes we can!
We bring together the dramatic poetry of 💐Maya Angelou read by educator 💐Ashley Causey-Golden, the creator of Afrocentric Montessori and co-founder of Gather Forest School.

Ashley has been teaching children since she was 18 years old and has appeared on Janet Lansbury's podcast UNRUFFLED. We are delighted to have her join us to read and rhyme along.

Ashley then shares a beautiful song, Who Am I? sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle. :)
💐Get on board, Little Children (SPIRITUAL) Join Miss Pam's train!
- Spirituals function as more than religious songs, they have been used by many people for different purposes. "Get on Board" has become a traditional song in folk music. The train could refer to a gospel train, a train of freedom from slavery. It is a train that anyone can ride.

💐Ella Jenkins has been called the First Lady of Children’s Music -she’s been performing and writing music for children for more than 50 years. She turned 99 in 2023 and lives in Chicago. She still plays her harmonica and her kazoo.
💐What do you hear?
-CLAVE: Miss Pam is playing the clave rhythm (with 2 of my grandson's wooden blocks) developed in Cuba from the African bell pattern brought to the Americas via the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
"The rhythm is used to lock in the many rhythms of Afro-Cuban music, as well as other Latin music like the bossa nova of Brazil."
💐Light of Mine - TRADITIONAL/GOSPEL Miss Pam gets to singing out loud, singing out proud!

This song contains inspirational lyrics and wasd a favorite song of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977) who used the song to inspire Black sharecroppers to register to vote in the 1960s.

😖# 123 Grumpy Grandma!

😖# 123 Grumpy Grandma!

It's Curmudgeons Day!

a curmudgeon is known to be deeply grumpy and usually in a sour mood.]

Confessions of a Grumpy Grandma

For the past few weeks, this grandma's life has been stresssssful. My daughter and family, who live in the UK, are spending 7 weeks with me in Jamaica. We’re in #6.

I was so excited for my 2 grandsons, ages 1 and 3, to visit. I live near the ocean in a rural community and I couldn’t wait to share it with them. And then they came! It was wonderful - a sweet, warm and enthusiastic reunion.

For a week.

Carefully planned child care assistance collapsed almost immediately and I felt compelled to fill in the large gaps.

I became Grumpy Grandma.

What helped? Well, Small Talk Baby Podcast!

They already listened regularly and knew many of the songs, rhymes and stories - some familiarity is the key!

My podcast has been a life saver for ME!

I started turning it on ... like, many times each day. I have appreciated it so much, needed and relied on it over the past few weeks.

Once your baby knows some of the songs and rhymes - Boom! You can slip away for a little break and know they are learning and enjoying a screen-free activity. Give thanks!

PS: Grandson #1 knows his favorite episodes by number. If you listen to #21 there is a special voice near the end that he has us playing on repeat :) Can you guess who it is?

Warmly,Miss Pam

Watch Miss Pam's 16 month Grandson read!

I set up a "morning invitation" for my 16 month grandson - a scene with a Pig and a doll looking at books. It was a magnet if I may say so myself, weellll, I am still a darned good children's librarian ... :)
After breakfast he crawled over, of his own accord, and proceeded to choose one of the books - he knew 2 of them very well. He began reading, turning the pages and enjoying his very own storytime!

Imagine what was going on in that brain during this!

The children listen to the podcast and read multiple times in the day. Growing readers from birth!

☀️# 120 Greetings from Jamaica - Rhyme + Sing with me!

☀️# 120 Greetings from Jamaica - Rhyme + Sing with me!

Research: U. of Cambridge, neuroscientist Professor Usha Goswami. Dec 6, 2023

"Parents should speak to their babies using sing-song speech, like nursery rhymes, as soon as possible, say researchers. That’s because babies learn languages from rhythmic information, not phonetic information, in their first months."

Greetings from Miss Pam in Jamaica.. I'd say..

This baby podcast is simply the best tool to get parents singing and talking to their baby every single day.

Here's a seasonal Jamaican song for you:

Holiday a come me wan me lama!

Lama is an old Jamaican term that means "presents" as in gifts.

This song comes from slavery days and was sung at Christmas time when people would dress up as characters and parade on the streets.

They would sing this song as they asked onlookers sometimes for money to get themselves or their family, gifts for the holidays.

RESEARCH ON WHY NURSERY RHYMING AND SINGING IS SO IMPORTANT FROM BIRTH.

#117 🟡.🟤.Feelings: Let's Talk About It

The title of this episode was inspired by Heidi Rojas' lullaby: The Feelings Song.

On the podcast, I sing along with her on the episode (on a recording!) and she kindly gave me permission to share it! It is a beautiful, comforting melody. 🟡Children’s literature provides a wonderful way into feelings, to stimulate discussion and to include more nuance and complexity as children grow. ☕ #114 Sitting here in London!

NOTE: Season 4 is geared to ages 3 to 4 years. I recommend previewing episodes before sharing them with your child to make sure it is appropriate for your little one. Thank you!
I feel lucky to be able to spend a few months in London each year with my daughter's family with 2 grandchildren, ages 1 and 3 years. This helps to keep me on my early literacy toes and I get to use and test the podcast! I spend the rest of the year between the east coast of the US and rural Jamaica.
++Season 4 is made up of episodes recorded from and flavoured with each of these 3 places. This episode has a little British flavour. Cheers!

🌺 On an island, named Jamaica, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, there lived a little girl.

One day, she set off over land and water to find an adventure. When her travels brought her to the edge of the United States, she sat down and thought, "maybe this is where I should stay."

Just then a strong breeze came by and blew her further north and eventually, she landed in New Jersey. Since she loved children and stories, she became a librarian.

She has fun bringing together stories and songs, reading and rhyme, all for family literacy FUN.

This little girl is me! Now a grandma to two littles under 3 years old, I get to use my own podcast with them - how lovely! READ FULL BIO on Miss Pam

"A HANDY TOOL to help young children develop critical mathematical thinking."

Geared to you and your little one's first 1000 days together.

  • Things to do: With your little one, find shapes around your home - shapes are everywhere! COUNT steps on a staircase. SORT toys - things with wheels, soft toys, circles or spheres. NOTE numbers on buses or signs.
  • Point out shadows around you, use rich vocabulary to describe what you see.

CONSIDER THIS: To help a child grow their language, we talk, read and sing to them. We need to do the same with math. Baby STEM will help!

Math is important and it’s important to help young children develop their mathematical thinking. A child’s math knowledge at the start of kindergarten predicts later academic achievement better than early reading or attention skills. (NAEYC.org)
