#174: Rebel Moon Review

Zack Snyder has released his latest film on Netflix, Rebel Moon. He originally pitched his idea of this story to Lucasfilm many years ago as a Star Wars movie. #171: Is This Another Sign of a Modern Hobby Collapse?

#171: Is This Another Sign of a Modern Hobby Collapse?

Hasbro, the Providence-based toy maker of the Star Wars action figure line, has announced mass layoffs due to inflation and sluggish sales. Is that the only reason for the downturn in business? Could it be the constant barrage of repacks and repaints on multiple toy lines in an effort to keep costs down? Is the reliance of consumers buying without thinking about the price tag really the best strategy? On this episode of the Smugglers’ Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason dissect this news and try to decipher its meaning. Nearly a year ago, Hasbro announced a new strategy to push prices and double their profit margins - was that a step too far? As they discuss what this means, it’s important to remember 1,100 people are losing their livelihood. We as collectors have a passion for Star Wars action figures, but it’s not the most important thing in the world. It’s not the best of times right now… especially before the holidays.

#166: Do Chase Gimmicks Enhance Collecting?

#166: Do Chase Gimmicks Enhance Collecting?

Several toy lines do it. Hotwheels, Funko, and Jazwares all participate in the practice. They developed a toy line for the masses, but then make a limited number of items that collectors must discover, by chance, by being at the right store during the right time. These are called chase items - items that could require multiple store visits to track down. With many people chasing a limited item, it gets tiring fast. Toy company’s say that this makes their toy line more collectible - but is that an accurate description of their practice? If you’re like the hosts of the Smugglers’ Galaxy Podcast, you may find the practice to be more frustrating than beneficial. Join hosts Glen and Jason as they talk about this collecting gimmick and wonder if it enhances collecting or makes it more frustrating. Additionally, they are back from a Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors meetup. Learn all about what happened. They also discuss news and their latest pickups!

#163: Revisiting the Mortis Arc

#163: Revisiting the Mortis Arc

The end of Disney+'s latest Star Wars show, Ahsoka, left characters with unfinished arcs. Ahsoka and Sabine are trapped on another planet, and Baylon is still searching for a raw power trembling through the force. Baylon is shown standing on the outstretched hand of a mountain-sized sculpture, gazing into the distance. Fans of the Clone Wars recognized the face of the statue as The Father, a force god who controls the balance between his son and daughter. The Son represents the dark side of the force and the Daughter symbolizes the light side.
On this episode of the Smugglers' Galaxy podcast, Glen and Jason revisit the Mortis arc of The Clone Wars in an attempt to theorize where future tales from the Star Wars galaxy might be heading. What role do these force gods play? Their fates seemed wrapped up in The Clone Wars, so how can it expand further?
Additionally, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors had a meetup at Second Chance Toys and Collectibles. The hosts share their experience from that gathering. They also share the first scheduled panel for Rogue Fun, a sold out convention scheduled for next spring.
All this plus their weekly pickups on the Smugglers' Galaxy Podcast.

#160: FAR, FAR AWAY!

On this episode of the Smugglers’ Galaxy Podcast, Jason takes a critical view of Hasbro’s latest offerings. After The Vintage Collection and Black Series offerings, he’s worried about the quality and lack of creativity coming out of that company. #153: What Does an Ideal Crowdfunded Project Look Like?

The Haslab Ghost funded within days of being announced. With a 45-day window to back the project, it only needed five of those days. With such a successful start to the project, it begs the question - was the Ghost a good Haslab project? Haslab was created to provide fans the possibility to own dream collectables. For some, The Ghost is a dream vehicle to add to their collection. But if enough people support this right away, shouldn’t this just be a normally released vehicle? And if so, was the Rancor a better Haslab project because it didn’t get funded?

Glen and Jason discuss this and more on this episode of the Smugglers’ Galaxy podcast. There’s news about the Micro Galaxy Squadron line of vehicles, the identity of the actor who portrayed Willrow Hood in the Empire Strikes Back has been discovered, and Jason reveals a bump in the collecting road he experienced this week. #147: Getting into the World Between Worlds

#147: Getting into the World Between Worlds

In episode 13, season 4 of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger entered a new dimension in the Star Wars universe - a world between worlds. This is a land with portals that Ezra could view into. Ezra was not only able to see the future and the past from this new place, but he seemingly could make changes to the things that have happened. One common interpretation of this is that Ezra is able to time travel through these portals. On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason talk about this controversial piece of Star Wars lore. Jason doesn't like the idea that time travel has been added to the Star Wars canon, but perhaps that interpretation is incorrect. Dave Filoni, showrunner of Star Wars Rebels, has recently commented on the intent of the world between worlds and how it should be viewed as a Star Wars fan.

In addition to this, Jason returns from a trip to Walt Disney World and shares his experience. Glen and Jason share their spoiler filled thoughts on the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride. They also share their recent pickups and go through the latest Star Wars news!

#145: The Return of Joefest!

Joefest is an annual toy show in Augusta, Ga., that, traditionally, was a GI Joe focused event. Over the years, the show has diversified and more brands of toylines have shown up, including custom products. On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, Glen is back from this toy show and tell us what it was like to be there. How were the crowd levels? How were the prices of vintage Star Wars items? At the same time as Joefest, Jason attended a Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors (GASWC) meetup. This is a monthly event where people who share the same Star Wars collecting passion meet up in the Atlanta area to hang out and share what they've been up to. This particular meet up was at Fernando's house, a GASWC member who makes an annual diorama for Toylanta.

#143: Frustrations in Collecting and… UFOs?

On this episode of the Smuggler’s Galaxy Podcast, Glen share some of his recent frustrations with modern collecting, particularly trying to find the Micro Galaxy Squadron Sabine Wren TIE Fighter. This vehicle is a limited chase in that line of vehicles, and has become a difficult product to track down. Glen has been searching for this item since February with no avail. Also, thanks to a listener request, throw on your tin foil hat as Jason share his numerous sighting of unidentified flying objects (it was a slow holiday weekend - cut them some slack!). All of this plus news and weekly pickups.

#142: What Happened with the Galactic Starcruiser?

Glen is back from a trip at Disney World, and he dishes on how it was to experience an after hours event in Galaxy’s Edge, Disney’s Hollywood Studios Star Wars Land. With very few people in the park, how many times can he ride Rise of Resistance in one night? Is it worth the money? Glen shares his thoughts on the topic. He also shares his experience on the Guardians of the Galaxy ride, Ratatouille, and more! Additionally, while Glen was at the parks, Disney announced the future closure of their Galactic Starcruiser, better known as the Star Wars Hotel. This comes about a year after the immersive experience opened to the public. Glen and Jason discuss this latest turn of events and try to figure out why the Starcruiser is closing, and what could the company do with the property in the future.
