So Do We Still Like This?

Episode 7 - NES Sports Games

An episode of So Do We Still Like This?

By Shawn M
So Do We Still Like This? is a podcast where we revisit our childhoods to see if the things we used to love still hold up as adults. One person picks something they have nostalgia for (movie, TV show, book, album, video game, etc) and they go back to it along with one or more people who are experiencing it for the first time. Then we all get together to ask the question - so, do we still like this?

There's a new Addams Family movie out so wife and I thought it was time we go back and visit the old ones! We see if they still hold up about 30 years later and also talk about Fester being naked for more of the run time then you would expect! Hopefully this new one does ok but I just checked Rotten Tomatoes and it looks like it doesn't so that's too bad! You should still listen though. Follow us on stuff! Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

September 15, 2019
Episode 56 - No Holds Barred
Rob finally gets to bust out his wrestling knowledge however it's unfortunate for him that it's for an episode where I made him watch an 80's action romance comedy drama starring Hulk Hogan. Great for me though because this thing is an absolutely hilarious mess. Come listen to us talk all about it! Follow us on stuff! Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

Episode 52 - NES Sports Games: The Second Period
Get it? Cuz...cuz period is a term they use in sports. Not in any of the sports games we are playing today understand. There are now more sports games on the Nintendo Switch's NES Online service and Rob and I are back to play them all. This time we are taking a look at NES Open Tournament Golf, Super Dodgeball, Volleyball, Excitebike and Tecmo Bowl. Also 52 episodes! That's a year you guys! That's a whole damn year!

Episode 51 - Kuffs
Finally, a podcast brave enough to spend nearly an hour talking about the early nineties Christian Slater movie Kuffs. A movie that could only be released in the early nineties, I am joined by newcomer to the show Kyle to discuss this movie in more detail than anyone involved with it ever did.  Follow us on stuff! Episode 50 - Star Wars: A New Hope
Fifty episodes! That's actually pretty incredible. From it's humble beginnings as a random idea that could be fun, here we are almost a year later having produced fifty of these things. Thank you to everyone who has helped me with this, whether you've been in on the recordings or listened to our output, thank you all so much and here's to fifty more! We promised something big and what could be bigger than introducing someone to one of the biggest franchises of all time? Renee has never seen a shred of Star Wars so it's time to bring her in! Rob joins me as we expose Renee to A New Hope and answer all her newbie questions, like how is leading the Jawas, what's up with Stormtroopers, and where the hell we at? 50!!!!

Episode 49 - Unsolved Mysteries
Wife makes her big return after seven months away from the podcast and we finally make use of our Prime Video membership by partaking in some Unsolved Mysteries. We enjoy the soothing sounds of Robert Stack as he tells us about ghosts, weird humming noises and ...well you'll have to tune in to know about the other one. Follow us on stuff! Episode 48 - The Exorcist
What an excellent day for an Exorcist episode! Mel and I revisit what many consider to be the scariest movie of all time. Does it hold up? Find out here along with other pressing questions such as what did we write in our childhood diaries? At what point in this situation would we straight up abandon our children? And much more!  Follow us on stuff! Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

Episode 47 - Wild America
It's time for another dose of 1990's Devon Sawa as we take a look at 1997's Wild America. Also the movie just turned 22 which is kind of a milestone so I'll take it! Jordan has been wanting to do this movie for months so he and Wads join me to talk owl hallucinations, bad fictional filmmaking and how often Devon Sawa skinny dips with his siblings in his movies. Follow us on stuff! Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

Episode 46 - South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
It's the 20th anniversary of the South Park movie and if you thought we were going to let that pass us by then you are a darn fool! Drea, Rob and I come together to discuss the South Park movie in detail, including our experiences seeing it twenty years ago, whether it's message still holds up, and the joy of curse words in general. Also for you die hard Rob fans (RobHeads I think is what you like to be called), he is called away by the Rob Signal (it's a shockingly high but necessary taxpayer expense) early in the episode so you will have to wait a little longer to get your full fix!

Episode 45 - This Week's Top Rock Songs in 2000
Well, that's a cumbersome title but it's the best I could come up with!  This week Rob and I take a look back at the top 40 songs on the Billboard Alternative charts during this same week in the year 2000. Why? Because music episodes don't require much prep and because it gives us the chance to talk about bands like Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Creed and Everclear. Mostly though it gives me an excuse to bust out a whole host of incredible singer impressions.
June 23, 2019
Episode 44 - Ghostbusters 2
Well I guess we're gonna have to take control. We don't lose our title of the anniversariest podcast of 2019 so to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters 2 (which is happening right now!!) we watched...well Ghostbusters 2. Rob joins me to revisit this sequel and talk about how the plot maybe doesn't make sense, why ghosts are the worst and what it's like to step on a slug with your bare feet. Try to battle my boys? THAT'S NOT LEGAL!
June 16, 2019
Episode 43 - Clone High
Sam and Rob join me to talk about Clone High, a cartoon from almost twenty years ago that features wall to wall people who go on to be a really big deal. Does it deserve the reverence people still have for it to this day? As the only people qualified to make that decision, you're going to have to tune in to find out. Don't forget to follow and like us on all these different platforms! Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

Episode 42 - Now and Then
Another episode that has been on the top of the list since the very beginning, it's finally time to look at 1995's Now and Then. That also meant it was finally time to crack open the DVD my wife bought almost 10 years ago. Sam and Drea join me to talk surprising boy butt, being polite to people who save your life and whether or not children should be allowed freedom.  Don't forget to follow and like us on all these different platforms! Episode 41 - A League of Their Own
Typically we try and tie these into an event. It's not the World Series currently but baseball is indeed happening somewhere right now I'm sure so technically this still counts! Renee and Drea join to talk about this baseball classic that somehow had gone unwatched (apparently not a word but I don't believe that) by me until now. Is there crying in baseball? Let's find out together!   Don't forget to follow and like us on all these different platforms! Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

Episode 40 - Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
Well, I already angered Harry Potter fans so now it's time to anger the Star Wars fans as I lead a conversation to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Thankfully I'm joined by Curtis and Rob, the new biggest Star Wars fans I know, to help prop me up as I struggle to comprehend even the most basic stuff. And yes, we definitely talk about that part where a big fish gets eaten by an even bigger fish.  Let's also take a moment to realize how crazy it is that we've done forty of these things now!

Episode 39 - New Found Glory's "From the Screen to your Stereo"
That is a very long episode title. Sam and Rob join me to talk music and movies as we look at the recently completed "From the Screen to your Stereo" trilogy of albums from pop-punk band New Found Glory. For those who don't know, these are covers of movie themes and songs. We discuss the band, the songs, the movies and cover songs in general. And mummy fatigue. We cover that too. Episode 38 - The Witches
It's Mel's time to shine as we (Sam and I) indulge her with the other movie she has been wanting to do since the beginning - 1990's The Witches. Based on the Roald Dahl book, and about to be remade with Anne Hathaway in the lead role, this is a bizarre product that claims to be for kids but then spends most of its running time determined to terrify any children that may be watching it. Is this remake worthy? Is it oddly sexual for a kid's film? Are mice as terrifying as this movie purports? All great questions and all are answered here! I also say on this episode that I should link our social media platforms in the show notes so here is me doing that: Facebook - Twitter - Instagram -

Episode 37 - Pro Stars
With Space Jam in our rear view mirror (except for the fact we keep bringing it up, this week included) it's time to look at Michael Jordan's another bizarre 90's kid's product - the cartoon Pro Stars. This is a real thing that happened for three months in 1991 where a cartoon aired on NBC featuring Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and Bo Jackson fighting bad guys and helping children. It only had 13 episodes and yet I still remember it well to this day.  Resident Sportsmen Rob and newcomer Jordan (not the athlete...yet) join me to talk about this oddity that only could have existed in the early nineties.

Episode 36 - Childhood Lunch Snacks
It is time to once again break a whole bunch of podcast rules. We eat, we noisily open packages and we even loudly close doors! It has been a while so we felt it was time to rebel against the podcast man. It has also been a while since we had a crew of four but this week Drea, Sam and Rob join me as we lay out a spread of junk food that were staples of our childhood lunch times. Jos Louis. Passion Flakies. Fruit by the Foot. Weird stuff that Rob brings in. We also discuss the mystery of Dunkaroos.  Oh and we tried out a new recording space so hopefully we all sound incredible now.
April 21, 2019
Episode 35 - Knightmare
Rob hasn't selected an episode topic since Episode 4 so it was time once again. Rob has selected a UK game show that looks to be a phenomenon - Knightmare. Sam joins us as we check out this high concept show where a group of kids have to guide their friend(s) through a virtual world that the friend can't see. It has virtual children getting sawed up by virtual saw blades so hop on in!
April 14, 2019
Episode 34 - Big Shiny Tunes
We promised to do something besides tv shows and movies and here we go - a music episode! And we are joined by a new guest - Renee! And Rob! But I mean you already know Rob. He's the British one. So, Big Shiny Tunes is a series of Canadian compilation CD's that were released by Much Music and contained many of the biggest hits of the year. There were 14 of the things but we are only covering the first four as those are the ones we remembered the most. Get ready to get angry at the musical taste of others as we look back at the stuff we listened to 20 years ago!
April 7, 2019
Episode 33 - 10 Things I Hate About You
We promised this back in the She's All That episode and as the most promise keeping podcast of 2019 we had to deliver. Sam and Drea join me to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 10 Things I Hate About You. Is this one a teen comedy classic or a 90's relic? How should you shorten Joseph Gordon Levitt's name? What's it like having a sister? Also we revisit Space Jam and toss a little love its way.
March 31, 2019
Episode 32 - Space Jam
It's March Madness and we looked at the rich history of basketball movies to find the one that best represents the sport and it's legacy. Naturally we selected Space Jam. Look it was either this or Air Bud and I think we can all agree this was the right decision. Space Jam rookies Rob and Mel join me to see if a movie where Bugs Bunny teams up with Michael Jordan to play basketball against aliens is as amazing as it should be.
March 24, 2019
Episode 31 - Cruel Intentions
Dim the lights and grab the wine because it's time to get sexy. Cruel Intentions is twenty years old so it's time to see if teens talking dirty is as engaging now as it was twenty years go. Sam is here and we introduce Wads to our podcast family as we watch Buffy and the guy from McGruber talk about boning each other.
March 17, 2019
Episode 30 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer: "Hush"
The Gentlemen are coming by. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a huge topic to cover so we thought we would carve out a small slice and talk about a single episode, season 4's "Hush". Always right at the top of any Buffy episode ranking, Drea and I wanted to go back to this one to see if it's just as effective and just as terrifying as we remember.
March 10, 2019
Episode 29 - Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears
Guuuuumi Bears! Bouncing here and there and everywhere! A Facebook poll that many of you probably didn't see dictated this as our next episode so Drea and I tackle a long awaited subject. I won't lie - we don't have a whole lot to say about it but we make up for that with plenty of talk about cartoons in general, including a surprisingly large amount of digs at Peppa Pig.
March 3, 2019
Episode 28 - The Academy Awards
It's Hollywood's biggest night so that means we need to make it our biggest episode! I mean, we didn't in terms of participants, length or scope but it has the most mentions of Neil Patrick Harris which has to count for something right?  The Academy Awards are tonight (unless you are listening on one of the other 364 days where that isn't true but it seems unlikely) and Rob and Sam join me to talk about our history with the event, some of our favourite and least favourite moments and why being the host is a thankless gig.
February 24, 2019
Episode 27 - She's All That
With Valentine's Day just barely in our rear window, it was time once again to tackle the subject of romance. That was an overwhelming decision to have to make but thankfully She's All That came out just over 20 years ago so hey why not? This seems to be one of the better remembered teen movies from the 90's so Drea and Sam join me to see how we feel about it now.
February 17, 2019
Episode 26 - Tusk
We've been wanting to talk about Kevin Smith for a while and we are getting that going with a bizarre choice -his 2014 film Tusk. Oh and don't worry - I explain on the episode how I'm getting away with a five year old movie on a nostalgia podcast. Mel and Rob join me on this episode. Mel knew a little about the film, Rob knew absolutely nothing and if you've seen Tusk, you know this is the kind of movie to watch knowing absolutely nothing. I don't even want to say what it's about just...just please listen to this episode.
February 10, 2019
Episode 25 - Little Giants
It's Superbowl Sunday and with a wealth of football related movies and entertainment to look at, we narrowed in on the 1994 kid's movie Little Giants.  It's the classic underdog sports movie tale where Rick Moranis' ragtag kids face off against Ed O'Neill's kids who have actual talent. Who will win the chance to be the team that represents their small town?! Find out the answer in this surprisingly focused episode.
February 3, 2019
Episode 24 - Wishbone
What's the story Wishbone? By popular demand, we took a look back at this PBS children's classic. Drea loved it, I barely watched it, Rob has never even heard of it so we have every angle covered. This is probably a good time to remind everyone we are an entertainment podcast and you shouldn't necessarily come here to learn. Why am I saying this now? You''ll see.
January 27, 2019
Episode 23 - Earthbound
This one is a biggie as Curtis and I discuss our favourite game of all time - Earthbound for the Super Nintendo. All while Drea plays the game for the first time live during the recording and offers up her initial thoughts. This episode could have easily been four hours long so we try and hit on as much as we can as quickly as we can. Also for those of you who don't know anything about the game, there's weird tangents about The Presidents of the United States of America (the band, not the actual presidents) and plenty of classic video game tunes piped in throughout the episode!
January 20, 2019
Episode 22 - Big Trouble in Little China
It's time for a new episode and a new guest! Mel joins me to talk about a movie that I've always felt bad for having never seen - John Carpenter's cult classic Big Trouble in Little China. We talk about whether it has stood the test of time and of course it wouldn't be this show if we didn't talk about a whole mess of other stuff. What is a bulldozer parent? Why are we not showing our kids the stuff our parents let us watch at the same age? Is chocolate milk better than regular milk? Only one way to find out!
January 13, 2019
Episode 21 - The Harry Potter Movies
We're kicking off 2019 with a big one as my wife and I discuss our experience going back to all eight of the Harry Potter films. It wouldn't be a podcast with my wife if we weren't racing to record before our daughter wakes up so we cover all eight in less than an hour! Are you ready for vague recollections, cold hard facts and the most definitive ranking of the films to date? Well we have some of that here. Let the corrections commence!
January 6, 2019
Episode 20 - When Harry Met Sally
It's the last podcast of 2018! We wanted to ring in the new year with something special but it turns out most New Year's focused movies are terrible. Thankfully a romantic comedy classic I haven't seen has a connection so we watched When Harry Met Sally! We discuss whether it deserves it's reputation as a classic, what makes a good romantic comedy in general and whether you would want to wield a knife or a bat if drawn into a fight to the death. You know, romantic stuff.  Thanks everyone for listening! We'll be back in 2019, bigger and stronger than ever before!
December 30, 2018
Episode 19 - Christmas Morning Memories
It's only two days until Christmas (unless you aren't listening to this the day of release then it's anywhere from one to 364) so instead of sitting through another piece of media, we gathered together to talk about Christmases past. What were our Christmas morning traditions? Does anyone care about egg nog? What gifts made us burst into tears (of both joy and rage) when they were opened? All that and more!
December 23, 2018
Episode 18 - A Very Ben Affleck Christmas (Reindeer Games and Surviving Christmas)
Ben Affleck rings, are you listening? You definitely should be as this week's holiday episode brings a double dose of festive Affleck with Reindeer Games and Surviving Christmas. Two movies that did not release at Christmas (does Hollywood even know it's Christmas Time at all?) and are staples on most "Worst Christmas Movies" lists. Rob and I go back to see if these reputations are warranted. Join us for a walk in an Affleck Wonderland!
December 16, 2018
Episode 17 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the Jim Carrey one)
The Christmas train doesn't stop as we move onto our second festive episode - Jim Carrey and Ron Howard's live action take on How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Rob's never seen it, Drea watches it every year and I haven't seen it since it's release so we have every angle covered! Listen in and not only will you find out whether we still like it, but you'll get to hear about all sorts of other holiday topics like how best to murder someone with a pillow and what we think about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tiger. Also there's a bit about giant marshmallows and I think at one point we talk about Jurassic Park for a while? I don't know, this is a really weird episode you guys.
December 9, 2018
Episode 16 - A Garfield Christmas Special and We Wish You a Turtles Christmas
I make Rob and Sam take a trip back to my childhood with A Garfield Christmas Special and We Wish You a Turtles Christmas. One is a classic that stands the test of time and one is a flaming dumpster fire of which it feels like there is no escape. Which is which? Only one way to find out. Thank you to Crudbump for the use of our song this week. You can listen to and purchase his music here - - which I highly recommend that you do.
December 2, 2018
Episode 15 - Breaker High
We've been promising it for weeks and now it's time to deliver - here is our Breaker High episode. We revisit the early career of Ryan Gosling and find out if going to high school on a boat is still as cool sounding as it used to be. Also Drea teaches us about porn!
November 25, 2018
Episode 14 - Video and Arcade Top 10
A childhood favourite and apparently Canada's longest running game show, we take a look at the only way I was able to watch people play video games in the mid-90's - Video and Arcade Top 10. Does it hold up? What wonders does the prize wall hold? What was the top laser disc rental of 1997? How many times can one co-host flub his lines? All that and more!
November 18, 2018
Episode 13 - Batman the Animated Series
To celebrate the new blu-ray collection, we take a look back at a show I can't believe I haven't watched until now - Batman the Animated Series. We look at what are considered some of the best episodes and provide the definitive answers to all kinds of important questions. Who is the best Batman? Who is the best Joker? Are Smurfs delicious? You will never have to wonder again once you listen to this surprisingly long episode!
November 11, 2018
Episode 12 - Sailor Moon
Wife returns as we get our anime on! We explore anime's weird hatred for the moon and how Sailor Moon was originally a much different show before they brought it over to North America. Seriously. Sailor Moon is a strange and often very icky show. That Tuxedo Mask sure is dreamy though!
November 4, 2018
Episode 11 - Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is on Netflix so it's time to get our TGIF on and revisit the Melissa Joan Hart series. We watched episodes with haunted dolls, magical closets and Britney Spears so there's a whole lot to talk about. Also is Brad is a witch? Only one way to find out!
October 29, 2018
Episode 10 - Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Double digit episode number! We just keep stacking people into the same room as we have four people on this week's episode! Our horror themed episodes continue as we revisit a trio of cherished books from my childhood - Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Only we're not really telling them and it's very, very bright out.
October 21, 2018
Episode 9 - Halloween Candy
It's three people on one mic as Rob and Drea join me for a candy chat! We talk about the candy we used to like and eat it live on the air. Are Gushers still disgusting? Can Fun Dip expire? How does trick or treating work in England? What's up with Rob and police helicopters? Only one way to find out! I think I already used that line in a previous episode. I'd go back and check but who has the time?
October 14, 2018
Episode 8 - Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street video games
Why is the Halloween timeline so confusing? What year did Super Mario Bros 3 come out? Is Dash Rendar canon now? Those don't seem like questions that should be answered in an episode about the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street NES game but they are! Plus more! Curtis joins me for the start of our Halloween themed October and our longest episode yet! Come take some deep dives into some horror franchises and enjoy the return of my sick voice since this was recorded weeks ago!
October 7, 2018
Episode 7 - NES Sports Games
It's our first video game episode as Rob and I look at five sports games from the early days of the Nintendo Entertainment System - Baseball, Tennis, Soccer, Pro Wrestling and Ice Hockey. You'll find out how they hold up today and Rob drops all kinds of sports knowledge on us while I mostly just list athletes whose name I know. Sports!!
September 30, 2018
Episode 6 - Lizzie McGuire (TV Series)
I power through some sickness and welcome a new co-host to the roster as Sam joins me to discuss the Lizzie McGuire TV Series. Does a 2001 show aimed at pre-teen girls hold up for a dude in his thirties? Only one way to find out! Plus way more Aaron Carter talk than likely any other podcast released this week! ...unless Aaron Carter has a podcast. Which he very well might. But top five for sure!
September 23, 2018
Episode 5 - Get Smart (TV Series)
I'm joined by a new co-host (we are building up our roster), Drea, to discuss the 1960's comedy Get Smart. We do discuss the show but we also touch on many other important subjects, such as the evolution of comedy, the death of nostalgia, and perhaps most importantly, who is the sexiest Chris in Hollywood
September 16, 2018
Episode 4 - Spy File
Rob joins me once again to discuss something from his childhood - Spy File. It's a weird file folder thing that taught kids how to be terrible spies by staring at people on the bus, wearing masks that don't resemble human faces and keeping detailed notes about their favourite albums and spy films. See pics on our website ( and follow along at home!
September 9, 2018
Episode 3 - Mulan
Episode 3 fills in a rare gap in my Disney movie viewing - 1998's Mulan. Wife and I take a look and discuss the history of murder in Disney films, horse fights, and why Shrek ruined a lot of this movie's impact.
September 8, 2018
Episode 2 - 3 Ninjas
Episode 2 tackles 3 Ninjas, a movie from 1992 that my parents probably spent a small fortune renting for me from the local video store. I'm joined by Rob who had never heard of the movie until days before recording this podcast. Please join us and find out whether 26 years later this movie still packs a punch. ...Get it? Cuz ninjas sometimes punch guys. Guys I'm totally crushing this whole episode description thing.
September 8, 2018
Episode 1 - The Smoggies
It's the first episode of So Do We Still Like This and we watched the Canadian cartoon the Smoggies. I have no affinity for it whatsoever but my wife was a big fan so we sat down to take a look and ask all kinds of important questions, including: what the hell is a Suntot? Who is that guy? Why does the Princess look like that? And so much more!
