Spiritual Adrenaline with Tom Shanahan
Spiritual Adrenaline with Tom Shanahan Over 9 years ago Tom's substance abuse and the stresses of being a trial attorney landed him in treatment where he was introduced to the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Almost immediately, he recognized the importance of health and fitness in his own sobriety journey, which lead Tom to write the book, "Spiritual Adrenaline: A Lifestyle Plan to Nourish and Strengthen Your Recovery. Tom says, "The lifestyle changes need to be made, we're recovering from a lot more than just substances, the substance was trying to cover up the poor lifestyle choices." The book highlights research that seems to indicate that these same kinds of changes can be a huge benefit to those struggling with substance abuse and then lays out a process that integrates the 12 Steps with a healthy lifestyle. Highlight Real with Emily Paulson
Highlight Real with Emily Paulson Looking back, it's easy for Emily to see that alcohol was always a problem. She says that although something bad didn't happen every time she drank when bad things did happen she had been drinking. In college, she was able to mask her problem because her drinking didn't look too different from anyone else. It wasn't until Emily became a mom that her drinking became a glaring issue and she started to participate in what she refers to as "Mommy Wine Culture." "All the things happened that they say are going to happen." She had trouble in her marriage, was dropping the ball as a mom, got a DUI, and finally, she had enough. Today Emily is 3 years sober. She is a Recovery Coach, Public Speaker, and Author of the book, "Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life" You can find her on Instagram at @highlightrealrecovery and on the web at HighlightRealLife.com Do you want to take your recovery to the next level? Aiming High with Darren Prince
Aiming High with Darren Prince Darren was at the top of his career as an agent for athletes and celebrities like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Magic Johnson.  However, he was hiding a secret. Darren was in the throes of a severe opioid addiction. Everything started when he was 14 years old at sleep away camp. Darren had been experiencing severe stomach pain, and the nurse gave him a liquid green substance that turned out to be Demerol. He lied about his stomach pain and returned to the nurse every night for more. Darren would continue to chase the freedom and comfort that opiates gave him for the next 24 years. His addiction came to a head around the time that he helped coordinate the reconciliation between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, two of history's most iconic athletes. Darren was instrumental in bringing these two nemeses together, yet minutes earlier he was snorting pain killers in his hotel bathroom. After an overdose in the early 2000's Darren started looking for help which lead him to a 12 Step program. Today Darren is 11 years sober. He is the author of the best selling book, "Aiming High" and continues to represent some of the biggest names in sports. Human on Fire with Jessica Landon
Human on Fire with Jessica Landon As an actress and comedienne, Jessica made numerous appearances on TV shows and partied with big celebs like Hugh Hefner, but her lifestyle came at a cost. After becoming a 24/7 vodka drinker she entered what would be her first rehab facility in 2009. Over the next six years, Jessica entered treatment nine more times, hit a family of seven while driving, and fell over a railing causing a near-fatal brain hemorrhage. When she was admitted to the hospital, Jessica weighed 78 pounds, had a blood-alcohol level of .503, and a blood staph infection. She says, "It was bottom after bottom in rapid succession." After surviving so many brushes with death, the pain associated with drinking finally outgrew the pleasure, and she was finally able to give up alcohol for good. Today Jessica is more than 6 years sober. She's a Recovery Coach, the Co-Host of the Real Talk 100 Podcast, and author of the book, "Human on Fire." Double Life with Matthew Williams
Double Life with Matthew Williams Before getting sober in 2010, Matt was living two very different lives. On the surface, he was a teacher and coach, but underneath he was trapped in a self-destructive cycle of addiction. "I knew I had a problem, but I could never admit I was an alcoholic." After being arrested for a DUI Matthew entered treatment and started getting active in a 12-Step program. Early in recovery, Matt was working a 9 to 5 desk job and doing personal training with clients in the evenings. One morning, while making a snack, he found grabbed some ingredients from his pantry - peanut butter, protein powder, oats, cinnamon, and honey - and crafted his very first bar. His clients started asking to sample his homemade bars and the FROPRO snack bar was born. Today Matt is 9 years sober and FROPRO snack bars can be found in grocery stores and supplement shops across the country.  He and his wife also founded the FROPRO Foundation which supports individuals and communities working to overcome addiction. Recover Out Loud with Tara Conner
Recover Out Loud with Tara Conner In 2006 Tara's life quickly went from living in a small town to living in New York City, being crowned Miss USA, and having Donald Trump as her boss.  "All of a sudden I had all of these responsibilities and I always had to look and act a certain way." She entered treatment in December of that year after testing positive for cocaine. Although Tara was only 20 years old when she got sober, she said she managed to do a lot of damage in her 6 years of drinking and using. Tara recently celebrated 13 years sober and she has made it her mission to raise awareness that addiction is a disease and not a moral failing. Her Ted Talk, talk show and podcast RealTalk 100! and her Recover Out Loud Town Hall meetings have helped many people in the recovery movement step out of the shadows. Hope Dealer with Rich Walters
Hope Dealer with Rich Walters Rich said he fell in love with drugs and alcohol at 13 years old. "I didn't realize how much I hated being sober until I was loaded." Over the next 21 years, he remained under the influence of some type of substance. He described the first ten years as fun, but the last eleven were spent trying to forget how bad his life had become. After hitting progressively lower rock bottoms and being faced with prison, Rich got sober on April 28, 2014. "I hit the ground running in a 12 Step fellowship and never looked back." Today Rich travels the country speaking to various groups about the vicious cycle of drug addiction and alcoholism and is the National outreach director for a treatment center in Florida. Drug Addiction with Colicchie
Drug Addiction with Colicchie Chas Smith, better known as Colicchie, started smoking weed at 15 and by the time he was a senior in high school he was addicted to heroin.  After barely graduating, he began making regular visits to jails, treatment centers, and psychiatric wards.   He said,  "It was a torturous existence where every day I wanted to die."   After trying many forms of moderation he finally came to the realization that complete abstinence was the only thing that worked.   Colicchie found relief in writing and journaling, which eventually led to rapping and recording his first few albums.   "I don't think I would be where I am today in my recovery if it wasn't for music."   Today Colicchie is over 4 years sober and being a father is the most important thing in his life.  You can check out Colicchie's music on all major streaming platforms. She Recovers with Dawn Nickel
She Recovers with Dawn Nickel Dr. Dawn Nickel is a leader in the women’s recovery space and the creator of She Recovers, the largest online platform dedicated to supporting women in recovery from behavioral health issues and related life challenges. Dawn knew she had a drug problem at 17 years old because she had only been using drugs for a few years and had already experienced several overdoses. One of the Guiding Principles of She Recovers is the idea that all women are recovering from something. Along with being in recovery from addiction, Dawn is also in recovery from domestic violence, anxiety, grief, trauma, and cancer. Dawn got clean in a 12 Step program, but understands that might not be the best fit for all women. She suggests that instead of debating which program or pathway to recovery is best, we should simply ask, "Does it save lives?" As Needed for Pain with Dan Peres
As Needed for Pain with Dan Peres As Needed for Pain with Dan Peres Dan was first exposed to opiates while recovering from an injury In 1995. By 2003 he was taking about 60 Vicodin a day. He would juggle multiple pain-management specialists at a time, limping and dragging his leg into the waiting room even though he was no longer in pain. On the outside Dan's life didn't resemble anything close to what most of us think an addict's life might look like - he was the editor in chief of Details Magazine and was earning a good living. But when Dan was asked what was really going on he said, "I was constantly in fear, constantly high, and I was taking pills from the moment I woke up." Dan recalls one particular story where a meeting with boxer Mike Tyson ended abruptly after running outside to vomit on the street. Although it was clear things were unmanageable, Dan just wasn't ready to give up the pills for good. Dan finally got clean with the help of an old friend in 2007 and found his way into a 12 Step program. He recently wrote a memoir about his experience which he hopes will encourage a positive change in the stigma that surrounds addiction. Dan's book, As Needed for Pain can be found on Amazon. Recovered with Jacob Jones
Recovered with Jacob Jones Jacob recalls having anxiety and feeling out of place as a kid and for a time he was able to mask these feelings by playing football. He said, "When I put on my helmet all of those negative feelings went away." Eventually, he went on to play in college but recalls feeling as if he had lost his identity when an injury prevented him from playing the game he loved. This loss started a spiral into drug use which landed Jacob in hospitals and institutions. After going to his second treatment center in 2016, Jacob began following the suggestions and working the 12 Steps in Alcoholics Anonymous. Jacob now has over 3 years of sobriety, is happily married, and is helping those who are newly sober navigate recovery through his platform The Sustained Life. He also recently authored the book Recovered: How an Unsustainable Addiction Led to a Sustained Life which uncovers many unanswered questions asked by so many afflicted with this disease. She appeared on 100’s of magazine covers, in music videos for artists Mick Jagger, Prince, 2Pac, Lionel Richie and Babyface, TV shows such as The Young and The Restless, and in hit movies including Blow, Vanilla Sky, and Charlie’s Angels. Both her personal and professional life spiraled out of control and her Hollywood dream had become a dark and lonely place. One day when she was on the way to meet with her dealer she accidentally stumbled into a 12 Step meeting and although she didn't get sober at that time, the seed of recovery was planted. After years of failing to stay sober, she was convinced to go to treatment where she came under the care of Dr. Drew Pinksky, otherwise known as Dr. Drew. Finding Financial Recovery with Brandon Turner
Finding Financial Recovery with Brandon Turner Brandon had his head on straight up until college, but when his addiction developed and quickly progressed, he had to find a way to support his habit. The need for more cash lead Brandon to a life of selling drugs which quickly spiraled out of control. Eventually, he was making a six figure income, but he had no direction or purpose and soon dropped out of college. It wasn't long until Brandon was busted by police in an undercover drug deal and was given the choice to either get sober or go to prison. Even though his freedom was on the line he chose to continue selling drugs. He says it was very similar to his addiction, "I just kept thinking I'll do one more deal and then stop." Brandon's using and selling drugs finally came to an end after attending mandatory 12 Steps meetings and an outpatient program, but he was now $75,000 in debt and the IRS was after him. He knew it would be difficult to dig himself out of this hole, but understood he had avoided facing these problems for long enough. Today, Brandon is debt free and coaches people in recovery on how to manage their finances in order to avoid the same pitfalls he encountered. He also authored the book, "Personal Finance in Addiction Recovery." The Gordon Ramsey of Recovery with Dr. Robb Kelly
The Gordon Ramsey of Recovery with Dr. Robb Kelly: Robb was born in Manchester England where he grew up in a family of musicians. He says that when he took his first drink at the age of 9 his whole world "lit up". It was this moment, he believes, that triggered his disease of alcoholism. Incredibly, he managed to stay on a path of success, performing in studio sessions with artists like Elton John and Queen, as well as continuing to pursue his Doctorate in Psychology at the University of Oxford. As his addiction progressed, his family and friends eventually refused to continue enabling him, which led to Robb living on the streets. After over a year of being homeless, the turning point came on a cold, rainy night during a moment of desperation. Robb was approached by a stranger who asked if he wanted help turning his life around. The man took Robb into his home and said he could stay under the condition that he attend AA meetings. Even though Robb hated AA he agreed, and eventually found a sponsor and completed working the steps. After seeing an incredible change in his attitude and life, he knew that if he continued doing what he had been taught, he would stay sober. That was over 28 years ago and Robb has been sober since. Today, Robb runs the Robb Kelly Recovery Group and is sometimes referred to as "The Gordon Ramsay of the Addiction Recovery" because of his direct, no-nonsense, and candid approach to treating addiction. He has discovered that in order to get his clients to change their thinking, they must confront their disease head on. Although he knows some of his methods may seem unconventional, they are based on extensive research and behavior studies that he has conducted over the last 20 years. You can learn more about Robb and The Robb Kelly Recovery Group at RobbKelly.com Robb's book "Daddy, Daddy Please Stop Drinking" is available on Amazon. We teach sex ed to kids, why not addiction awareness?
Knowing about the dangers of addiction is just as important as talking about the birds and the bees, according to Dr. Rajy Abulhosn, a medical provider at Confirm BioSciences. When nearly 2.3 million adolescents ages 12-17 admit to using alcohol in the past month and 1.9 million adolescents admit to using drugs, school districts should be at the front-lines of combating the addiction crisis. As part of the same courses that teach comprehensive sex ed, he believes schools should be talking about the intersection with drugs and alcohol.  Dr. Raiy is challenging people to consider this argument, why not include this information? Kids are being taught sex ed in school, why would it be more shocking to present real conversations in schools to kids about addiction? The answers may surprise you! Only 57% of Parents in America tell their kids about drug and alcohol addiction, how it may relate to their families etc. This number must come up, there must be a better way to at least encourage parents to open up about this subject to their kids. As long as this stat stays true, we will never accomplish anything.   Dr. Raiy is an experienced Medical Director with expertise in Corporate Wellness, Travel Medicine/Counseling, and also as a Medical Review Officer. I am very comfortable in non-clinical medical roles, including leadership roles, management/administrative roles, and public speaking. I have a Bachelor of Arts (Communications), with a Medical Degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. I am board-certified in Family Medicine, and am also a member of the American Association of Medical Review Officers and the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners.    In this episode we cover: Addiction and mental health’s portrayal in the media HBO’s show Euphoriadid a great job of not glamorizing drug and alcohol use in Season One. People struggling with mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, are more likely to develop substance use disorder to help deal with the associated symptoms. In the depressive phase, people may turn to alcohol or other substances to help ease depression, sadness, loneliness, and/or associated anxiety. For those in the manic phase, their hyperactivity may lower inhibitions and impair judgment, leading them to use or abuse substances when they normally wouldn't.   There’s a specific scene in Euphoria where the main character cheats on a urine test while she is in “recovery.” If the main character had taken a hair test, it would have shown that she indeed had not stopped using. Opting to perform drug testing on your child or teen can greatly reduce the likelihood of them trying drugs or succumbing to peer pressure. It is important to let them know your reasons and listen to their opinions and concerns, as your child may be hurt or upset by your decision, even if it is made with their best interests in mind.   How parents can talk to their kids about substance use Teens who say their parents would strongly disapprove of them trying marijuana are much less likely to use an illicit drug than those who think their parents would not strongly disapprove. A necessary part of preventing drug use in the home lies with drug testing. Sometimes verbalizing a no drug policy isn’t enough. At-home drug testing kits don’t have to be an intimidation method but rather a conversation-starter to ask questions and understand the consequences of drug addiction – in turn helping parents take back control of what is perceived to be an uncontrollable situation.

Mike also goes deep into his drug of choice which was something called flacca. Truly terrible drug. In this episode we talk about: - Growing up in a hoarded house with his Mom who was suffering with mental illness.  - Mike's slide into his addiction as his desire to work harder became destructive.  - Becoming a Father, the family dynamic as it was while Mike was using vs. living clean - Hitting his lowest point, making a life changing decision Much of what Mike discloses with me is unknown to many people close to him. It takes courage to invite people in and disclose details of your life at the risk of judgement.

The Heart Of A Playmaker
Brian Holloway was selected by the New England Patriots in the first round (19th overall) of the 1981 NFL Draft out of Stanford University. As a rookie in 1981 he started 5 of 16 games. In the strike-shortened 1982 NFL season, Holloway started 9 of 9 games as he became the starting left tackle. After beating the New York Jets in a wild-card game of the 1985-86 NFL playoffs, the Patriots beat the Los Angeles Raiders on the road in the divisional rounds and the division. However, they could not run over the legendary Chicago Bears defense of 1985 in Super Bowl XX. After Football Brian started traveling the country speaking at 100’s of corporate events through the country talking about the “Mind of a Play Maker” a very effective motivational and self help approach to life. Brian has been endorsed by some of the biggest profiles in politics and in sports.   Brian was very clear when he described addiction and recovery. He really feels that there is a softening of people, the character of people especially young people. Brian is not a man who has ever made excuses for his losses or has gloated on his wins. Brian was very clear in this interview about what he feels is the best approach to recovery, and how to get to recovery and keep it. People in recovery must focus not only on the mind, but also the body. This not the time to abuse your body any more than you have over the years of your addiction. Recovery about progress, small steps but always making gains. There is not quitting if you are trying to save your life. If you do not act against your addiction, you will never recovery properly. You will hurt, you will hate life, you will be physically and mentally sick, but the day will come when you make a breakthrough and you will see the true light of recovery and feel peace inside your heart. Brian takes on the subject of recovery head-on, like he used to take on opponents on the football field. His opinions are strong and worth hearing. In this episode we talk about: Levels of action to success Brian real thoughts on addiction Mind over matter There is nothing you can accomplish   Show Notes: www.brianholloway.com

A Whole New Way To Look At It...
Carrissa has dedicated the last decade of her life on inner growth. In 2011 she chose a path of celibacy in order to better understand herself and the world around her. Carrissa has spent literally thousands of dollars on renowned master healers, intuitives and highly trained shamans from around the world. She strongly feels the way out of the never-ending human struggle is through constant self-transcendence. She hopes to inspire her audience to find the love and light of God within. I AM THE LIGHT OF GOD, a 2-year self help course to enter the spiritual heart of God channeled by Glen Russell This is a course in training the mind to be disciplined. You will be meditating twice a day and writing letters to God. And silently repeating affirmations such as "I am the Light of God, consuming the seed of discontent." It is extremely powerful.   "The build-up of emotional pain in our heart center is comprised of 12 parts of the ego. These 12 ego parts were each created within our mind using our Free Will and are distortions of the 12 aspects of our Higher Self Consciousness. The energy of each of these 12 parts of the ego must be transmuted by the Light of God, in order for us to ascend into our Higher Self state of consciousness." ~ Glen Russell "...walking the spiritual path is not easy, but choosing not to walk the spiritual path is much harder. I have seen so many so-called 'spiritual people' who are in a state of still-stand who refuse to tackle their inner fears and inner pain on a daily basis. What I have discovered is that if you want to truly progress spiritually you have to prioritize healing your emotions as the number one daily activity of your life." ~ Glen Russell

Meet Bennie
Bennie’s story is like many others, growing up he got himself caught up with the wrong people, and through them was introduced to drugs and alcohol at an early age. Many of the people Bennie hung out with could use recreationally and still be OK, that was not the case for Bennie. Bennie grew up in North Minneapolis, A formally notorious series of black neighborhoods that for years were always poor, crime ridden, and ignored. Bennie’s family was not the normal black family, Bennie’s Mom and Dad were happily married and raising their family together. This is a sad commentary about life in America but a truth never-the-less. The culture in the neighborhood was that everyone smoked weed and drank, that was the norm and not looked at as a problem. When some one started using harder drugs, coke, meth, etc. then then community would look at you as someone with a problem. In this episode we talk about… Bennie reveals his story and offers his advice and hopes for those who still struggle. Growing up in tough part of Minneapolis, the culture Overcoming the odds and making his life great in recovery   Bennie represents the millions of people who work hard trying to carve out a piece of the American dream in a system that sometimes backfires on people. Keeping people dependent on assistance to live, single Mothers trying to raise 3 kids at the age of 25. The system is not set up for you to prosper but to become dependent and entrapped. Bennie’s experiences followed the same trajectory as many of us in recovery have experienced, but his was unique in that there were cultural and social considerations to consider.  Bennie has been sober for 10 years, growing stronger in his resolve each year. Bennie now leads an A.A. group in Minneapolis, has inspired countless people and is rocking his life.  North Minneapolis has been seeing a change, new business, new renewal, Bennie owns a house in North Minneapolis and was a big part of the new momentum, never quit never give up.
