Addiction And Mental Health Matters

May is Mental Health Month and in this episode Dora shares her experience with anxiety and depression and how it relates to many alcoholics and addicts' histories.  She shares how hindsight is 20/20 and how she used to need a drink at a certain point every day to take the edge off and how it wasn’t until starting her journey in sobriety that she understood and realized that alcohol is a depressant. She talks about the fact that addiction and alcoholism are but symptoms of underlying causes and conditions and those underlying causes and conditions are often mental health issues. Dora also shares 10 signs and symptoms to be aware of that may indicate an issue with Mental Health and how being open and honest with your Doctor about your recovery is the best way to safeguard your sobriety and not ending up with habit forming or addictive prescriptions.  Depression, anxiety, PTSD and other trauma related scenarios are just some of the issues we deal with and even self medicate over. Let's break down these stigmas together by talking about these things without shame or guilt. Addictive Personalities
ep -55 with Doctor Jennifer Shaw in San Diego, California This episode is packed full of good stuff and some new topics we haven't discussed on this show yet.  Doctor Jenn has always had that all or nothing attitude which is often the case with those of us with addictive personalities.  Joining us from San Diego, Jennifer is a doctor with a background in physical therapy and after finishing seven years of schooling and just three weeks into her dream job she was hit by a car while on her bicycle. Dr. Jenn was instantly disabled at the young age of 24 and had a long road of recovery ahead of her. At one point she was taking 30 prescribed pills a day to cope with the chronic pain, nerve damage etc. Her Doctors told her she would be dependent on these meds for the rest of her life but Jen had different ideas. She was challenged by someone she trusted to go for six months without drinking or getting involved in a relationship to find true healing for herself.  This was the start in Jennifer's journey of living a clean and sober life and she openly shares her story with us.  We also discuss being in a relationship with a narcissist and how to identify these types of people.  Doctor Jennifer Shaw also has her own podcast  titled Natural Wellness Tips be sure to check it out and follow her on Instagram. Recovering In Paradise
ep -53 with John Martin in Puerto Vallarta Mexico  Welcome to the Soberoso podcast where we invite guests and listeners from around the world to join us in "Sharing Our Passion For Recovery".  John and his beautiful wife Nancy made the move from Canada to Mexico just a couple of years ago and are now living the dream life in Puerto Vallarta where they recently opened a men's substance abuse treatment center, but life wasn’t always so good for John. In this episode John tells us how he tried many times to get sober doing things his way, Johns way, until the last time more than 20 years ago when he finally found the solution to ending his drinking and drugging. He tells us of what things were like for him growing up in a home where addiction and alcoholism was the norm. He swore that he would never become like his mother. That all went out the window around the age of 19 when he started drinking which quickly led to  drugging and John realized immediately that he had an addictive personality and it was going to be a problem. Soon after his intro to booze and drugs he began living a double life, married with kids and living a life of lies. John shares with us how he crossed a line and no longer cared about the consequences he would face for the decisions he made as the addiction grew stronger. His then wife gave him an ultimatum and stated that if he relapsed again their marriage would be over and John walked out of the house and into addiction with no one looking over his shoulder. He ended up losing his best friend and has buried another 40 - 50 people to addiction. He was so numbed out on drugs that he had no feelings. Today he has rekindled his relationships with his children, his ex wife and was able to be there for his own mom as she was passing away as a sober woman later on in life. The gifts came back with sobriety. When John got clean and sober for the last time more than twenty years ago he promised that when he was done with the 12 steps that he would then do them with someone else and since then he has helped hundreds of people go through the big book and live a life in recovery. If you would like to know more about John and the incredible things he is involved in or the 90 day recovery program please check out their website at www.recoveryinparadisepv.com and if you find yourself in Puerto Vallarta please join them for their Sunday night English speaking meeting. YOU can help us raise awareness around addiction and alcoholism by sharing our episodes on your own personal social media platforms making it easier to talk about these issues that affect millions of families around the world. Coming up on two years of clean and sober time Christopher has been reflecting on his recovery with gratitude and appreciation for his new life and breaking free from the chains of addiction. He tells us how it took years for him to get really good at drinking and eventually he did get really good at it. Christopher was drawn to getting away with his drinking which led to him driving around the block to finish his drinks before going to work, his wife finding empties in the car and drinking the day away on and off the job. On his way to the hospital via ambulance kicking and screaming that his life was now over the EMT said something he remembers to this day “Maybe, your life as you knew it is over…. And maybe that's ok.” We discuss the Hollywood rock bottom and how it really isn't necessary to drive your life into the ditch. You can choose your turning point in life at any time. Christopher shares how “Alcoholism can be a symptom of an underlying issue, and for me, my underlying issue, my illness was my depression and my anxiety”. ep -48 Your Liver, Your Lover, Your Lawyer with Jane Zarse in Chicago Welcome to The Soberoso™ Podcast where we invite guests and listeners from around the world to join us in “Sharing Our Passion For Recovery.” If you are an old timer in recovery, a newcomer, sober curious or a loved one of someone who struggles with alcoholism, addiction or mental health issues this show is for you. We are real people who have overcome incredible odds to turn our lives around and are passionate about tearing down the stigmas around alcoholism and addiction by speaking our truth and getting heard. This episode is packed with a powerful message and lots of laughs. Jane and Dora have a great conversation about using gratitude to attract more into your life to be grateful for. Some of the signs that Jane started to see indicating her drinking was a problem were, her uncontrollable shakes and that she had a real physical dependency on alcohol. Her disease took her from social drinking into drinking alone at home in her pajamas and her father was taking care of her daughter as she had become an unfit parent. She couldn't even look at herself in the mirror. Lacking emotional maturity due to drinking at a young age and never dealing with her problems sober was the catalyst for her writing her second book Sober And Pissed Off.   Addiction and alcoholism are but a symptom we have to get to the underlying causes and conditions. Jane made a decision to get sober for her daughter and then stayed sober for herself. She didn't think it would be possible to stay sober but 11 years later she is still sober and happy today. Recovery works for those who want it. She is a beautiful example to her daughter and shares her experience as an alcoholic and her recovery journey openly with her now teenage girl. Jane Zarse is the Author of two books Love And Compassion Is My Religion and Sober And Pissed Off. How Sobriety Affects A Family
ep - 46  How Sobriety Affects A Family with our guest Migs in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Welcome to The Soberoso™ Podcast where we invite guests and listeners from around the world to join us in “Sharing Our Passion For Recovery.” If you are an old timer in recovery, a newcomer, sober curious or a loved one of someone who struggles with alcoholism, addiction or mental health issues this show is for you. Each Tuesday we bring you a brand new episode where our grateful host Dora either shares what's on her mind or interviews a guest with Q & A’s regarding what life was like before and after finding recovery. We are real people who have overcome incredible odds to turn our lives around and are passionate about tearing down the stigmas around alcoholism and addiction by speaking our truth and getting heard. Migs tells us about the environment he grew up in and how drinking and drugging was present and that he swore he would never pick up a drink or drug. He was turned off by alcohol in his teenage and adolescent years but, due to some legal troubles when he turned 21 the drinking started and quickly spiraled out of control. We talk about the different types of alcoholics from functioning, binge drinking, fall down and weekend warriors. How we tried to control our drinking and blackouts in the past and how widely acceptable drinking is. Looking back one of the signs Migs couldn't help but notice was the amount of people that came up to him the night before his own wedding asking him to please not get or be drunk for the wedding. He thought his drinking might be a problem but he wasn't ready to tell anyone else that. One night Migs looked into his baby son's eyes and was reminded of his own upbringing and how he didn't want his child to grow up with a drunk father around. Miguel made a decision that night that would change his path for the better. He shares his recovery journey with us and how sobriety affected his family. Staying fit one day at a time is where Migs focuses a lot of his recovery today. She tells us the difference this time around is that she is getting clean and sober for herself. We discuss the difficulties people can face when trying to get sober with their partner and what that looks like for a couple. Jenny describes her first drink at 11 years old, getting drunk and was blacking out drinking by the age of 13. She ended up stealing thousands of dollars from her parents while in active addiction. Life started on a quick downward spiral as the relationship she was in escalated from heavy drinking to a mix of heavy drugging, to a suicide in her back yard on her 39th birthday. This was not Jenny’s rock bottom, it got worse….  Jenny still likes the same music, but has added to her listening mix with some Faith based music. Take a trip with us to Australia where we visit with our guest Victoria who grew up where drinking was a big part of culture, and drinking until falling over was acceptable. Victoria's aim was to grow up and be the party girl and that is exactly what she did. She never looked at drinking as a problem even though she’d often be rolling around on a dirty dance floor at the end of the night smashed. Victoria overdosed on ecstasy at 22 years old which resulted in her staying in this paranoid state for a whole year. It scared her so bad that  she stopped drinking and everything for a year and got help. However, this wasn’t her rock bottom. Her aim during that year of abstinence was to be able to drink normally again in the pub. Victoria shares her story of the “millennium stump” when she blew off one of her fingers on New Years Eve in Thailand while lighting fireworks in a black out. She also tells us a few stories and how these drunken experiences became a part of her personality. Things changed when she settled down in a real relationship and wanted to have children. When she did go out her binge drinking style changed and the hangovers and anxiety were so intense. Sober now 1,000 days she shares her stories while drinking and drugging and in sobriety. Victoria still likes the same music and loves reggae, Ska and house music and a good dance party at home with the kids. Victoria is the Author of  A Thousand Wasted Sundays and writes a blog. Old School Freaks and Geeks
Take a trip with us to Dallas Texas where we talk with Curt who celebrated one year clean and sober on Nov 19, 2020 Curt started drinking at the age of 14 and grew up in the old school punk rock and skateboard scene. His drinking and drugging took him through many phases that included all the party drugs like acid, ecstasy, mushrooms and cocaine. He tried pretty near everything over the years until he grew out of that and found himself drinking daily while he worked unsupervised and hid it from his family. That all changed a little over a year ago when his wife caught on to what he was doing and gave him an ultimatum. Curt has since changed his habits and behaviors and his life is immersed in recovery. He is the founder of Skate Straight where he shares the recovery message to a very diverse crowd of skate boarders, chefs, musicians, straight, gay, trans gender and sober curious. His family like many others comes from the old school thinking of not talking about issues past or present. If you are depressed, get over it. Rehab is for quitters and if I had a drinking problem I certainly wouldn't tell anyone about it. Curt has changed everything in his life and is speaking his truth openly about his addiction and alcoholism. He is on a mission to raise awareness and tear down the stigmas making it easier to talk about the disease of alcoholism and addiction. Curt likes many different types of music and because he's old (his words) he likes what he likes. Hip Hop, Punk Rock, Willy Nelson and Coldplay  Check out the full episode now and please visit Curt to wish him a happy  #1 year soberversary  here Instagram Skate Straight (@skatestraightdallas)  You can also read his written story and see a couple pictures of him on the Soberoso website.

How we can not save people and force them into a life of sobriety and that this has to be a decision made by the addict or alcoholic. We also discuss some of the suggestions in early recovery and why it is advised not to make any major decisions in the first year of getting clean and sober. Including dating, relationships, sex and emotional stability or lack there of. * As always the opinions here are just that opinions based on our own experiences. Kaylen tells us that in her opinion there is no casual use of heroin or meth or any drugs for that matter. She openly shares her story with us in hopes that someone out there does not go to the lengths that she did before realizing they may have a problem. Today Kaylen has transformed her life and helps women and children with issues of substance abuse. She is able to help another alcoholic or addict because of her own past and in depth understanding of addiction. In this episode we talk about having fun in sobriety and share some tips that we use when going to bars, concerts and festivals while living a clean and sober life.  Kaylen's favorite  genre of music is Indie and her fave  groups are Modest Mouth and Death Cab For Cutie

The Path Of A Criminal
Today on October 18th 2020 a very incredible man in Huntington Beach celebrates One year living clean and sober. His name is Michael G. and he is eager to share his journey and be of service whenever he can.  Michael started drinking at the age of eight years old and grew up in a rough neighborhood where he wasn't easily accepted due to his origin and being half Mexican.  He started hustling drugs at a very young age and was up against his first charges at only thirteen years old.  He was in and out of jails and was declared a menace to society at the age of fourteen. Michaels ultimate plan in life at that time was jail where he earned his stripes and respect. Michael spent many years running around with gangsters in Oakland and tried filling the void in his life with drugs, crime, alcohol and sex. He has been in and out of court ordered and voluntary treatment and detox centers his entire life and now he has a brand new mission. * This is the first part of two episodes where we celebrate Michael G's milestone of #1 year clean and sober.

Alcohol And Violent Crime
Take a trip with us to visit our special guest Leigh in South Africa. Leigh shares how she started her journey in recovery when having to put the bottle down due to her pregnancy.  Both she and her husband had a conversation that many new parents should have regarding the future of their new family and how they wanted to break the cycle of alcohol being so widely accepted as the norm. This beautiful woman who competed in the World Games in Russia is now on a mission to raise awareness regarding the correlation between alcohol consumption and drunk driving deaths, rape, gender based violence and hate crimes.  Her message is loud and clear that inequality is not ok. She shares with us some very unsettling statistics on the amount of crime happening and going unpunished due to overpopulation in the prison system and how she and her outreach is educating young people in poverty stricken communities on basic principals of right and wrong. This episode carries a very informative and powerful message so please listen in and share with your friends on your social platforms so we can continue to unite globally and re-write the norm for the next generation. Oh Behave
In this episode you will meet my good friend Lyer in Ridgeway, Ontario Canada. Lyer tells us about his self destructive sexual behaviors that came along with his drinking and drugging habits that would leave him with shame and remorse, yet he would continually find himself drinking or drugging again and again and how one day he attempted to end it all.  He describes two different time frames in his life one as an alcoholic and years later with an opioid addiction after a car accident and initially being prescribed these pain meds from the doc that woke his addiction. He details his personal experiences both in his active addiction and how wonderful his life is now in recovery. He shares what is working for him and how he continues to stay clean and sober today. Lyer is a longtime friend of mine who I share a lot of history with. We have been room mates a couple times over the years in our drinking careers and after our friendship drifted apart for many years we reunited in recovery. Another beautiful gift of sobriety! " Once you are a pickle you can never go back to being a cucumber"  And so it is with alcoholics and addicts, once we have crossed that line we can never return to drinking like a "normie".

Our July 2020 Kick Off of the new Soberoso Podcast continues.  The Kick Off episodes are a perfect place to start if you just found our show and are listening years ahead at episode 100 for example and you want to know more about who we are and what this Soberoso Podcast is all about. It is an absolute honor to have our very first guest appearance in this episode from Brooklyn New York, The one and only POP BUCHANAN who is the founder and creator of "Sober Is Dope".  Pop is a Producer, Rapper, Artist, Author and Public Figure who is recovering out loud and leading a life of sobriety by example. Make sure to stick around til the end of the show where we close out with Pops recording titled "DEAR POPPY" a song inspired by a letter he wrote to himself to say goodbye to the old alcoholic he used to be and embrace the new man he is today.
