084- Relationships & Rare Disease with Joe Sooch
How would you choose to spend your time and who would you choose to spend your time with if you knew your time was ticking and your body was turning to solid bone? Meet Joe Sooch who has a rare disease called FOP which is slowly turning his body to solid bone.  Joe invests his time in elevating the voices of others who have disabilities and rare conditions too on his YouTube Channel, Two Mics, One Joe Sooch. Joe and I talk relationships, how we view them differently as Neuro-Majority and NeuroDistinct brains, interabled relationships and values, dating and one of Joe’s pet peeves–being on your phone when you go out on a date (Rude or Not?), healthy boundaries and so much more. (Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a very rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by the abnormal development of bone in areas of the body where bone is not normally present such as the ligaments, tendons, and skeletal muscles.) Mind Your Autistic Brain Talk Show hosted by The Social Autie, that’s me, Carole Jean.  I am a late identified Autistic ADHDer, Mom and Coach and each week I either have a conversation with another late identified autistic, who shares their voice, experiences and journey with you or I am sharing steps from my signature UnVeiling Method to help you go from Struggling Burned Out Autistic to living your best Thriving Authentic Autistic Life.  If you are on the Chronic Cycle Burnout Loop of Death, The UnVeiling Method, is the answer that will give you the process and the structure to live your best life now. 083 - Debriefing Autism Acceptance Month with Scott Frasard
How are you feeling after April’s Autism Acceptance Month as an Autistic? Join me and my amazing co-host Scott Frasard on Wednesday, May 25th at 2pm Eastern US for some community time to visit, share and do an April Debrief together as a community.  We know that April can be challenging but it can also hold some amazing successes and we want to hold space for you to process, share and find support, celebration and encouragement together with us.   Register Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0udOqopz8jH9YPilocElJAqX0uK76GlHCH  Last year Scott and I were both emotionally exhausted after seeking to be heard last April.  Many of you shared similar feelings and experiences with me after recovering from the emotional and mental exhaustion of last April’s Autism Acceptance events.  This year we want to debrief and talk about how April went, how we are feeling, what we experienced, what conversations we had and where we want to go from here. This year has been a bit different for many of us and Scott and I want to share some of the experiences, conversations, new insights and awareness we’ve had and how we both tried new models and approaches which resulted in us feeling pretty amazing on April 30th. Scott Frasard is an Autistic Advocate, researcher, practitioner and leader in the field of psychometrics.  Scott seeks to move away from the focus of measurement and evaluation which asks, “What do we want to ask?” towards the more important, “What do we need to learn?”

080 - Relationships & Dating as an Autistic Adult with Thomas Henley of Aspergers Growth
Have you been called narcissistic by someone in your life before?  This is something that can happen to an autistic person due to our unique communication styles and differences like alexithymia, dyslexia or auditory processing delays.  We aren’t narcissists, we feel deeply but that isn’t always how we are understood by others and this can impact our relationships or attempts at relationships quite frequently. Join Thomas Henley from @AspergersGrowth and me today for a discussion on relationships and dating as an autistic.  There are things you may not have thought of before that influence your relationships and your dating life now and in the past, trauma is part of the discussion as well. Come back and share your takeaway from this episode please. ---How did being called a narcissist by someone in your life make you feel and influence who you thought you were before you learned you are autistic not a narcissist? --Do you notice or go back and fix or work on things in your life if something doesn't go horribly wrong first? I work with parents, teachers, and staff writers and create accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities. I've worked with Kindergarteners to middle schoolers. I got my MA in Education with a specialization in 2020 from the University of the Pacific. I've worked with Autism Career Pathways, a nonprofit working to nerodiversify the workforce by empowering both the employee and employer, since 2019. I am proud to say I am the Secretary of the board of directors. I joined the non-profit when I learned that I am a rarity among Autistic adults because I have a career. I want to change that. I truly want to help others like myself gain meaningful employment, while still figuring out my own accommodations and modifications. 075- What Autism Actually Looks Like- Autism in the Workforce
It happens often in late identified life, you share you are autistic with someone and they reply, “But you don’t look autistic.”  This is what sparked my campaign last year #WhatAutismActuallyLooksLike #WhatAutismLooksLike  to share that autism is part of adult life not just childhood.  We had so many submissions for the video and it has been shared all over the globe and across social media platforms.  AND it is making a difference!!!  If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out on my YouTube Channel, Mind Your Autistic Brain in the playlist, What Autism Looks Like. This year the What Autism Actually Looks like campaign theme is: Autism in the Workforce.  I am leading the #NeurodistinctWorkforceMovement and the best way to begin shifting the broken narrative that we are only good at math or only work in Tech or IT is to showcase where we ACTUALLY are working. The adult autistic population is grossly unemployed and underemployed not because we lack the skills or abilities, but because the workforce has not yet begun to truly understand the gift that our neurotype is to not just the workforce but to humanity.  Let’s share who we are and what we do to make the workforce a place FOR US.  It takes all of our voices to make a change. How & What to submit: Between March 1st and March 18th send in a photo of you working in your profession, this could be you at your desk, working with clients, or if you are in school for a profession right now share that as well.  OR you can include a short video clip no more than 20 seconds in length showing what you do.  Include the statement in your video, “I am autistic and I am a/work in (insert what your profession or field of industry here)”  End with the phrase, “We are Autistic”  Check out last year’s video for ideas. DEADLINE to submit is midnight Eastern US Time Friday, March 18th.  Send your submission to: CaroleJeanW(at)SocialAutie(dot com) with the SUBJECT Line: I Am Autistic. If you want a tee shirt like the one I am wearing from the Autastic Shop and wear your shirt in April when the campaign goes live with the new video. (You will be supporting an autistic owned business-Autastic) https://www.autastic.com/shop/but-you-dont-look-autistic-t-shirt/ Coaching Cafe Academy: https://mindyourautisticbrain.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/1118424 #LateIdentifiedAutistic #AutisticAdults #AutisticWomen #AutistcMen  #AutisticCommunity #AutismResources #AutismAwareness #ActuallyAutistic #ASD #ADHD #Neurodiversity #AutisticBurnout #NeuroDistinct #BurnoutToThriving #BurnoutToBalance #The_UnVeiling_Method #SocialAutie #MYAB #CoffeeWithCaroleJean #WhatAutismLooksLike #UnVeilers #MindYourAutisticBrain #WhatAutismActuallyLooksLike #Thisiswhatautismlookslike #ButYouDontLookAutistic #NeurodistinctWorkforceMovement #AutisminBusiness #AutismAtWork

To join us today hop on over to our Academy page here: https://mindyourautisticbrain.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/1118424 Emily Autism and Me On Instagram @EmilyAutism I’m Emily and I received my autism diagnosis in 2020 at the age of 27. This came after years of knowing that I didn’t fit in and had struggles that other people just didn’t understand. This had a profound impact on my mental health which never saw an improvement despite trying various different kinds of therapy. Receiving my diagnosis has given me the answers that I had been looking for but that doesn’t mean that everything is now resolved for me. I still need support and adjustments which are not easy to find so I set up my business to make a difference and change the narrative around autism.

072- Time Boundaries Workshop for Autistic & ADHD Adults
COACHING CAFE ACADEMY IS OPEN!!!!  TO LEARN MORE AND JOIN US CLICK THIS LINK: https://mindyourautisticbrain.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/1118424 Time is our most precious commodity.  We trade it for all sorts of things from coffee with friends to working hours and household chores.  Once it is gone we can never get it back.  Time is a non-renewable resource. Often in Late Identified Life we find ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually exhausted and we often attribute this to a lifetime of masking and camouflaging.  These are most definitely contributors, but not the entire picture. How often have you found yourself in one of these situations: -You are rushing from one place to another to get it all done, you know that “to do list” -You feel like you are doing it all and no one else is helping or even cares -You reach a point you get so overwhelmed and exhausted you lose your cool and yell at those you love for the smallest things that normally wouldn’t bother you -You feel agitated, short tempered and often just plain pissed for what feels like no specific reason, it is just everything The one thing all of these feelings, experiences and situations have in common is a Time Boundary has either not been set or has been breached. When I ask coaching clients, “Were boundaries discussed in your home growing up?”  The answer is usually a laugh or look of shock followed by, “No, what boundaries?” (FYI, this was my answer in the beginning) So my question to you is this….How are you setting Time Boundaries to effectively manage how you spend your time, who you spend your time with and what you do with your time both personally and professionally? And most importantly can you identify where your time is being breached by others by you? If you aren’t sure about the answers to these questions that is TOTALLY OK because I didn’t either in the beginning. Join the Coaching Cafe Academy team of Ali Arena and Carole Jean Whittington for a 90 minute workshop on Time Boundaries where you will learn: -What a Time Boundary is -How to identify where Time Boundaries are being breached in your life right now -How to craft your own Time Boundary -AND the most important part How to Communicate and Share your Time Boundaries with others

065 - Alexithymia & Connecting with Your Emotions Through Story with author Katie Soy
One of the reasons why most Late Identified Autistics are struggling to identify emotions and not able to easily put words to all the feelings and often the simultaneous experience of feeling nothing is due to something called Alexithymia. Often autistics with alexithymia are not sure what to do or how to get to the root or word of a feeling and this can often lead to overwhelm, shutdown and autistic burnout because this can use great amounts of energy to not know how to identify and communicate how you are feeling to yourself and to others. In this episode, we’re going to talk about how to connect the feelings in our body to the emotions in our minds, how we can better identify them, and meet a firefly named Gem who will speak to your heart and will help you begin a path to easier connection to your emotions through her adventures & story.  I am joined today by master storyteller and author of the Gem's Island Adventure series, Katie Soy. So if this interests you please join us for this conversation. ******* I am excited to share the new feature on SPOTIFY with our Fans today, this episode is now available in its video version on the Spotify podcast platform along with additional POLL features. 064 Nano Vacations and Autistic Burnout
One of the reasons why most BURNED OUT AUTISTICS are stuck with SELF-CARE and not seeing BURNOUT RECOVERY is they are NOT SURE WHAT TO DO OR FEEL TOO TIRED AND OVERWHELMED TO EVEN DO ANYTHING and before you know it you have SLIPPED DEEPER INTO THE BURNOUT CYCLE LOOP OF DEATH. In this episode, what we’re going to talk about is how to get rid of those problems and create a SIMPLE AND ACTIONABLE PLAN EVEN IF YOU ARE IN BURNOUT RIGHT NOW that WILL GIVE YOU A PLACE TO GET CALM AND QUIET, A PLACE TO RESTORE YOUR ENERGY AND EVEN RESTORE YOUR SOUL.    I am willing to bet that you don’t have a SELF CARE PLAN FROM THE INSIDE OUT THAT INCLUDES NANO VACATIONS AS PART OF YOUR AUTISTIC BURNOUT RESTORATION PLAN. So if that interests you and you’d like to learn about my unique autistic self care element called a Nano Vacation, check out S3 E11 of the Mind Your Autistic Brain Talk Show on Podcast. S2 E35 Self Care = Self Talk Learn about the Thought Thermostat
Today we are talking all about Self Care and more specifically about Self Talk. The concept of Self Talk is pretty basic. You may have heard me talk about this concept before, but I am willing to bet that if you are a Struggling Burnout Autistic Newbie and finding yourself going from unplugging to recuperate to feeling a bit better only to end up back in the burnout trap a few weeks or months later, you don’t really understand what Self Care is or how to implement it in your life to keep off that Burnout Loop of Death. I am willing to bet that you don’t have a Self Care Plan from the Inside out that includes Self Caring Self Talk. Learn how to use the Thought Thermostat in your Self Care Plan from The Inside Out in today’s episode so that you can: - gain energy from your thoughts vs feeling drained and in that constant state of “fight or flight” - lower stress levels which may also increase immune function and help create better sleep Registration for the Part 2 Self Care Workshop on Friday, Sept 24th at 3pm EST (If you can’t make it live but would like the REPLAY via email you MUST be REGISTERED) https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcrc-isrzspEteEwswkgafEtwf2XvSK_979 Listen HERE: https://anchor.fm/socialautie Watch HERE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC73lo4QgCCkClj7sFm_mrZA Mind Your Autistic Brain Talk Show hosted by The Social Autie, that’s me, Carole Jean.  I am a late identified, adult autistic and each week I have a conversation with another late identified autistic, who shares their voice, experiences and journey with you. S2 E24 - Ask Me Anything About Autistic Burnout
I invited our Mind Your Autistic Brain community to send in their questions about burnout and I hosted a very casual zoom to answer them.  We ended up with 13 questions in this episode and I hope it is as helpful to you as it was to the group.  The poll results showed that the majority weren’t sure if they were in burnout at the beginning of the webinar and wanted to learn more and when I asked at the end if those who answered they weren’t sure now had clarity the results were very clear, yes burnout was definitely on the radar now. Time Stamps: Q1- 4:11  What is Autstic Burnout? Q2- 7:40  How can I help someone who is going through burnout? Q3- 10:51  What’s the recovery journey look like? Where to start? What’s the 1st step? Q4- 18:16  I have a long to do list, events and travel coming up and I’m feeling drained. Q5- 21:46  I have felt more distant & have no will to be social, is this an early sign? Q6- 26:12  Is there any way of getting motivated while in burnout? Q7- 31:43  At what age can burnout start? Q8- 34:44  How long or short could it be? How much can burnout vary? Q9- 37:44  How do I make peace with the me who was in burnout? Q10- 39:57  I’ve always thought I suffer from depression but could this be burnout? Q11- 43:20  Can medications make a difference and could this still be burnout? Q12- 47:19  How do I prioritize myself? Q13- 49:22 How do I recognize BO warning signs? How do I manage BO while still working full time? S1 E5 Cyber Bullying
Today is a segment from a video my friend, Rebekah J. Samuel and I made in June for a YouTube Series we do called The Chatty Auties about cyber bullying.  As autistics, we have all experienced bullying but in this time of quarantine where so many more people are online and stress and tensions are high we have experienced more cyber bullying and been witness to a good deal of it happening within our own autism communities.  We are discussing what happens in your brain when you experience a social hurt and why you feel so awful, how triggers and language assignments affect how we and others feel, two ways to heal from a social hurt from cyber bullying and how to respond. S1 E4 Substance Abuse in Adult Autistics with Jordan Camp
***** Adult topic and mild language, alcohol abuse, violence and suicide are discussed***** Today’s interview is on a serious and very important topic, Substance Abuse in Adult Autistics. My guest today is an adult autistic and has been clean and sober for almost a year.  Jordan Camp is opening up and sharing his journey with us today.  This is a topic we don’t talk about very much in our community and one I feel impacts so many of us.  If you have ever struggled with drugs and alcohol or are struggling with it now, take a listen today and know that you are not alone and there is another side and another way to live your best life.  We want you to know we understand.  The latest research shows that we as autistics are twice as likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.  Jordan is also a guest contributor to the Social Autie Blog and is sharing his tips and suggestions for not only ways to start recovery but also some things to know to identify use and abuse.
