As one of Barack Obama's top films of 2022, "Emily the Criminal" was a much watch for many other people as well. Starring Aubrey Plaza as Emily, the story follows what happens when your back is up against the wall, money is tight, and the seedy streets of Los Angeles are calling. Theo Rossi, Bernardo Badillo, Megalyn Echikunwoke,  and Jonathan Avigdori also star in the film.

I gravitated towards this show as a fellow creative trying to establish myself in the entertainment industry and the struggles I've had to gain access. “So, I Was Watching…” The White Lotus season 2 on HBO

HBO's award-winning series The White Lotus created by Mike White returned for its anticipated second season on October 30 on HBO and HBO Max. The series transpires over the course of a week at The White Lotus resort and spa and follows the exploits of its guests and employees. In the first episode, a death is teased and in the final episode the audience finds out who it is. 

Season one centered on money and class among the guests and employees at The White Lotus Hawaii and in season two we traveled to Sicily as the season centered on sex and intimacy. I love this show so much and was so excited to talk about all the mayhem that happened in the season and this time on “So, I Was Watching…” the discussion was grouped by the characters of the show. Death is truly not the end in the case of Jen and Judy, but can their friendship survive another season of secrets and evading the cops? The twisted friendship between Jen and Judy began in May 2019 when Dead to Me premiered on Netflix.

Its second season dropped in May 2020, but the pandemic delayed the third and final season until November 2022. The show follows widow Jen Harding (Christina Applegate) beginning a friendship with Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini); unaware of the crucial part Judy played in her husband’s death. “All roads have led to this.”.

If you've been on social media even a little bit I'm sure you've seen the chatter about how emotional viewers were watching the Netflix series From Scratch. The series is based on actress and writer Tembi Locke's New York Times best-selling book From Scratch: A Memoir of  Love, Sicily, and Finding Home. The series stars Zoe Saldana as Amy, an American woman who travels to Italy to study abroad and falls in love with a Sicilian chef name Lino, played by Eugenio Mastrandrea. It's a gut-wrenching series showcasing the power of love, family, and starting over from scratch.

So, I Was Watching 'Endings, Beginnings on HBO Max. Written and Directed by Drake Doremus, the film stars Shailene Woodley and her extra-fine leading men Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan. Woodley plays Daphne who is trying to figure out the causes of her life's destruction. She meets Frank (Stan) and Jack (Dornan) when she swears off men and alcohol, but she quickly falls back into old habits leading to life-changing consequences. 

As I was watching this movie it made me think about what causes people to seek validation outside of their relationships. What parts are not fulfilling you? What makes and breaks a relationship? Combing that theory with one of my favorite podcasts (Anna Faris is Unqualified), my sisters are back for another episode as we play Anna Faris's "Dealbreakers: A Game About Relationships." So, I Was Watching 'Mare of Easttown' on HBO Max. The show stars Kate Winslet as Detective Mare Sheehan who is investigating a murder while navigating the trauma in her life and how it's affecting all the relationships around her. 

It's an amazing crime drama, but one aspect aligns with today's episode. There's a scene where a young boy sees his sister getting bullied in a crowded environment and everyone is watching with no interference, at first. Few individuals step up to help someone in trouble on the notion that "someone else will help." Are you guilty of the Bystander Effect?

In this episode, I'm joined by Filmmaker Ethan Paisley as we discuss his upcoming short film "The Bystander Effect." It centers around a young queer man witnessing the harassment of a transwoman and deciding what he should do in the situation. So, I Was Watching 'The Haunting of Hill House' on Netflix. The Mike Flannigan series follows the Crain's family journey in grief while adding compelling elements of horror. While watching the show I couldn't help but focus on Elizabeth Reaser's character Shirley Crain and her path to becoming a mortician. Why would someone choose a career surrounded by death? Is it as bad as an outsider would think?

So, I Was Watching 'Wandavision' (Again) on Disney+. While the series had the elements of a Marvel project, it very much highlighted the journey to healing through the stages of grief with Elizabeth Olsen's character Wanda Maximoff. 

Watching the show got me thinking about grief in general, so I found an expert who could shed more light on the subject. Kelly Buffaloe Taylor of 'I Heal Tap" appears as a guest on this week's episode. Kelly shared her heartwarming story of how her personal tragedy of losing her husband at a young age led her to walk in her purpose as a  Grief Counselor.

So, I Was Watching Bridgerton on Netflix and I got to THAT episode with Daphne and the Duke. It brought me back to my first time and how different my experience was. Often times when watching television or films the concept of virginity is shown through the female lens and having sex for the first time is not accurately depicted on screen for some women.
