“So, I Was Watching…” Adult World on Tubi

(Season 2, Episode 11)

“So, I Was Watching…” Adult World on Tubi

Season 2 Finale. One of my favorite films is on Tubi. In "Adult World" Emma Roberts plays Amy, "a naive college graduate who believes she's destined to be a great poet, begrudgingly accepts a job in a shop while she pursues a mentorship with reclusive writer Rat Billings." Directed by Scott Coffey and written by Andy Cochran, John Cusack, Cloris Leachman, John Cullum, Reed Birney, Catherine Lloyd Burns, Shannon Woodward, and Armando Riesco all appear in the film.

Talking Points in This Episode

  • Plot of "Adult World"
  • Struggles of creatives
  • Season 3 tease

'So, I Was Watching...' Emily the Criminal on Netflix

(Season 2, Episode 10)

'So, I Was Watching...' Emily the Criminal on Netflix

As one of Barack Obama's top films of 2022, "Emily the Criminal" was a much watch for many other people as well. Starring Aubrey Plaza as Emily, the story follows what happens when your back is up against the wall, money is tight, and the seedy streets of Los Angeles are calling. Theo Rossi, Bernardo Badillo, Megalyn Echikunwoke,  and Jonathan Avigdori also star in the film.

Talking Points in This Episode

Under Mark Mylod directing eye, viewers are transported into a dining experience they’ll never forget in “The Menu” written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy. Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Ralph Fiennes, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Paul Adelstein, Rob Yang, Arturo Castro, Mark St. Cyr, John Leguizamo, Aimee Carrero, Reed Birney, and Judith Light star in the film. "So, I Was Watching..." The Best Man: The Final Chapters on Peacock

"So, I Was Watching..." The Best Man: The Final Chapters on Peacock

(Season 2, Episode 7)

"So, I Was Watching..."The Best Man: The Final Chapters on Peacock

Since 1999 we’ve followed the lives of Harper (Taye Diggs), Robyn (Sanaa Lathan), Jordan (Nia Long), Lance (Morris Chestnut), Quentin (Terrence Howard), Shelby (Melissa De Sousa), Candace (Regina Hall), and Murch (Harold Perrineau) in the “The Best Man” franchise written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee. 14 years later “The Best Man Holiday” updated fans on what was happening with our favorite group of college friends and lovers in 2013 and now in 2022 for the first time the franchise gets a TV series format as the story comes to a close in The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

For 8 episodes, The Best Man: The Final Chapters showcases a new stage of the life of the beloved characters as “relationships evolve and past grievances resurface in the unpredictable stages of midlife crisis meets midlife renaissance.” In the last "So, I Was Watching..." episode of 2022 I talk about the key parts of the series that stood out to me the most, so be warned SPOILERS are ahead.

Talking Points in This Episode

  • Shelby and Quentin's relationship
  • The unraveling of Harper and Robyn's marriage
  • Murch finding himself in his marriage
  • Candace's me too moment
  • Jordan's girl-boss mentality
  • Lance grieving Mia and rebuilding a relationship with his child LJ

“So, I Was Watching…” Rap Sh!t on HBO Max

Created by Issa Rae, the mastermind of HBO's Emmy-winning series Insecure, Rap Sh!t stars Aida Osman as Shawna Clark and KaMillion as Mia Knight who unintentionally start a rap group in Miami with ambitions of making it in the music industry. I gravitated towards this show as a fellow creative trying to establish myself in the entertainment industry and the struggles I've had to gain access. In this episode, I'm joined by my friend and digital creator John Dargan as we discuss all things Rap Sh!t. (SPOILERS AHEAD)

“So, I Was Watching…” The White Lotus season 2 on HBO

(Season 2, Episode 5)

“So, I Was Watching…” The White Lotus season 2 on HBO

HBO's award-winning series The White Lotus created by Mike White returned for its anticipated second season on October 30 on HBO and HBO Max. The series transpires over the course of a week at The White Lotus resort and spa and follows the exploits of its guests and employees. In the first episode, a death is teased and in the final episode the audience finds out who it is.

Season one centered on money and class among the guests and employees at The White Lotus Hawaii and in season two we traveled to Sicily as the season centered on sex and intimacy. I love this show so much and was so excited to talk about all the mayhem that happened in the season and this time on “So, I Was Watching…” the discussion was grouped by the characters of the show. (SPOILERS AHEAD)

Talking Points in This Episode:

  • Tanya's death and Greg's role in it
  • What happens to Portia now
  • The generations of DiGrasso men
  • Lucia and Mia seducing and scheming
  • Valentina being a boss babe
  • Cameron and Daphne's role in saving Harper and Ethan's marriage
  • What we want in season 3

If you've been on social media even a little bit I'm sure you've seen the chatter about how emotional viewers were watching the Netflix series From Scratch. The series stars Zoe Saldana as Amy, an American woman who travels to Italy to study abroad and falls in love with a Sicilian chef name Lino, played by Eugenio Mastrandrea. So, I Was Watching...The Twilight Saga

So, I Was Watching...The Twilight Saga

Twihards, this episode is for you!

On November 16, 2012, the world stood still for the fandom when the Twilight Saga concluded with the release of Breaking Dawn Part 2 in theaters. 10 years later and we are still triggered by the trauma of Carlisle losing his head, still questioning imprinting, laughing at Chuckesmee, and still liking the rain girl! In this episode, I'm joined by a fellow Twihard (my sister Trini) as we discuss the saga as a whole and think back on seeing Breaking Dawn Part 2 in the theaters for the first time surrounded by other Twilight fans.

Discussion includes:

  • How'd we rank the Twilight films
  • Breaking down imprinting
  • Reaction during Breaking Dawn Part 2 battle

"So, I Was Watching..." Podcast is back for season 2!

To kick off the new season Hulu's drama series "Tell Me Lies" is discussed. The show follows Lucy Albright's (Grace Van Patten) freshman year of college and the toxic relationship she engages in with upperclassman Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White). Based on the book by Carola Lovering, "Tell Me Lies" also explores how manipulation, family upbringings, and past traumas play a key role in how we navigate society.

Summer Series #1: XOXO Let's Talk About HBO Max's Gossip Girl

Welcome to 'So, I Was Watching...' podcast Summer Series!

This Summer Series will break away from the usual format of the podcast but still carry the essence in that movies and TV shows will be the topic of discussion while dissecting some of the themes in the projects.

In this episode, I am joined by two of my very good friends: Skyler and Courtney. We LOVE the original 'Gossip Girl' that aired on The CW from 2007-2012 and with HBO Max's release of their reboot of the series I could think of no better people to discuss the show with. From our confusion of the character's names to the overall plot of the show, we break down the premiere episode of HBO Max's Gossip Girl and what we want to see moving forward. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Representation Goes Beyond The Color Of Your Skin

Hello listeners

Since we are winding down to the final episodes of the season it's time to shake things up. This episode does not have a film or TV show you should add to your watchlist, but some items you can add to your reading list as well as for the little ones in your life.

In this episode, I'm joined with Dr. Pamela Gurley, author of the new Brown Girl and Brown Boy book series. In her first set entitled Brown Girl, Be Social and Brown Boy, Be Social, Dr. Pam explores ways to embrace the differences that make us all unique and ways to be social in a delightful, colorful children's book. During our chat, we talked about representation going beyond skin color and how to have a respectful conversation on the subject. Time to unlock your curiosity.

Deal or No Deal: What Are The Makes and Breaks Of Relationships?

Deal or No Deal: What Are The Makes and Breaks Of Relationships?

So, I Was Watching 'Endings, Beginnings on HBO Max. Written and Directed by Drake Doremus, the film stars Shailene Woodley and her extra-fine leading men Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan. Woodley plays Daphne who is trying to figure out the causes of her life's destruction. She meets Frank (Stan) and Jack (Dornan) when she swears off men and alcohol, but she quickly falls back into old habits leading to life-changing consequences.

As I was watching this movie it made me think about what causes people to seek validation outside of their relationships. What parts are not fulfilling you? What makes and breaks a relationship? Combing that theory with one of my favorite podcasts (Anna Faris is Unqualified), my sisters are back for another episode as we play Anna Faris's "Dealbreakers: A Game About Relationships." We break down the things we will not put up within the given scenarios in the game and we don't hold back so get ready. Time to unlock your curiosity.

We Interrupt This Program

Hello Listeners!

This is a very special episode of 'So, I Was Watching' because it isn't a normal episode. It's hardly an episode at all. I'm reworking some things with the podcast and explaining the new timeline for the duration of season one in this upload. The program may be interrupted for now, but the show will go on.

In this bonus episode, I share some of the "watches" I have recently got into and briefly touch on the themes I picked up on from them. I'll be back with a new episode on Friday, June 4th.

Are You Guilty Of "The Bystander Effect?"

Are You Guilty Of "The Bystander Effect?"

So, I Was Watching 'Mare of Easttown' on HBO Max. The show stars Kate Winslet as Detective Mare Sheehan who is investigating a murder while navigating the trauma in her life and how it's affecting all the relationships around her.

It's an amazing crime drama, but one aspect aligns with today's episode. There's a scene where a young boy sees his sister getting bullied in a crowded environment and everyone is watching with no interference, at first. Few individuals step up to help someone in trouble on the notion that "someone else will help." Are you guilty of the Bystander Effect?

In this episode, I'm joined by Filmmaker Ethan Paisley as we discuss his upcoming short film "The Bystander Effect." It centers around a young queer man witnessing the harassment of a transwoman and deciding what he should do in the situation. During our chat, we also talked about how to be an authentic ally and avoiding slacktivism. Time to unlock your curiosity.

The Haunting of Hill House's Mortician

The Haunting of Hill House's Mortician

So, I Was Watching 'The Haunting of Hill House' on Netflix. The Mike Flannigan series follows the Crain's family journey in grief while adding compelling elements of horror. While watching the show I couldn't help but focus on Elizabeth Reaser's character Shirley Crain and her path to becoming a mortician. Why would someone choose a career surrounded by death? Is it as bad as an outsider would think?

In this episode, I'm joined by Kari Northey,  Licensed Funeral Director & Embalmer. Known on social media and on YouTube as Kari the Mortician, Kari has the inside scoop on the funeral business and disproves some misconceptions about her field. Kari also talked about which series closely depicts the funeral industry and what you should know going into planning a funeral for a loved one.  Proceed with caution when listening to this episode. 'Hang the Dj' On Dating Apps

So, I Was Watching 'Black Mirror' on Netflix; specifically the fan-favorite episode "Hang the DJ" from season 4. In the episode Amy (Georgina Campbell) and Frank (Joe Cole) explore the possibilities of love with a dating app that pairs individuals with set expiration dates with each relationship. If only real-life dating apps were so simple.

In this episode, I'm joined by my dear friend John Dargan to chat about the ups and downs of online dating. We swap stories on our experiences, where the apps go wrong, and if we're willing to active our accounts again. Time to unlock your curiosity.

The Journey To Healing Through Grief

The Journey To Healing Through Grief

So, I Was Watching 'Wandavision' (Again) on Disney+. While the series had the elements of a Marvel project, it very much highlighted the journey to healing through the stages of grief with Elizabeth Olsen's character Wanda Maximoff.

Watching the show got me thinking about grief in general, so I found an expert who could shed more light on the subject. Kelly Buffaloe Taylor of 'I Heal Tap" appears as a guest on this week's episode. Kelly shared her heartwarming story of how her personal tragedy of losing her husband at a young age led her to walk in her purpose as a  Grief Counselor.

We also chatted about how grief is displayed in pop culture, the ways you can help a loved one grieving, the 'Wandavision' quote about grief that went viral on social media, and much more. Time to unlock your curiosity.

TRIGGER WARNING: Proceed with caution on this episode if you are in the midst of your own journey to healing through the grieving process.

Surveillance In Relationships Is Not 'Made for Love'

So, I Was Watching 'Made for Love' on HBO Max, and while I was very entertained viewing the series I thought about how important privacy is in relationships and why boundaries are crossed when there is a lack of it there.

For this episode, I got to chat with 'Made for Love' actor Chris Bagnall about his role as Shane Voss, interacting with Ray Romano on set, and his thoughts on privacy in relationships. Since Chris is a fellow Horror lover we shared our favorite films and talked about our genre fears. Time to unlock your curiosity.

Like A Virgin, The Misconceptions of The First Time

So, I Was Watching Bridgerton on Netflix and I got to THAT episode with Daphne and the Duke. It brought me back to my first time and how different my experience was. Often times when watching television or films the concept of virginity is shown through the female lens and having sex for the first time is not accurately depicted on screen for some women.

I gathered some special guests to chat about the ideas of virginity, experiencing sex for the first time, and what we wished we knew prior to the act. Time to unlock your curiosity.
