46 - Wahbinmigisi "Pennie" Robertson and Díana Bermudez
It's Wednesday and we've reached episode 2 of Red November! Technically this was recorded first, but who is counting? I am so, so grateful for Díana. Not only did she agree to contribute to this series, but she's been incredibly supportive behind the scenes with me as well. I feel very lucky to have connected with her and I'm sure she'll give you all that feeling in this episode. To be honest, even in covering my own Native background and talking to other people, I didn't think of the Indigenous people in South America. When Díana and I started talking, it hit me with a ton of bricks. Even though she is also on the journey of reconnecting, she said so many thought provoking things that I'm still mulling over.  If you enjoy this episode or want to talk about it further, be sure to catch me on social media! Also, if you have received your Red November Together merchandise, please post a picture! Especially you, person who bought the adorable baby onesie! I have been absolutely staggered by your responses to the first episode and I hope that you continue to enjoy the series. I appreciate all of you more than you know! Welcome to the first episode of Red November! Agnauraq is back to help me give a general overview of what the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirit movement and how it affects all of us. There are a lot of facets and emotions involved in this topic, but we included statistics and other information if you're new to the movement. Red November has been a journey for all of us and we hope that you enjoy this episode and stick around for the other 3. You can find more information on Agnauraq and their work here: https://somekindofbrown.wordpress.com/contributors/ Keep an eye on my instagram because I will be dropping the special merch designs from Agnauraq herself! 44 - Culture, Religion, and Fairies with Believer Skeptic
Hello and happy Wednesday! Chris and Cody from Believer Skeptic have joined us for the last episode of October and they closed us out with all the fun and laughter! I loved recording with them and exploring the intersectionality of being in the LGBTQIA+ community, the culture we were raised with, and how they affect the way we approach life. I hope you love this episode because honestly, it was a blast! I've linked Chris and Cody's social media so you can follow them too! Also I am in need of a new mic and this will probably be the last mic I buy. I have some upcoming projects and I want to improve the sound for all of you! With my current supporters, I've saved most of what I need, but I'm trying to get that last $50. After 24 years, I finally got to be reunited with my cousin Mansfield at a powwow in Grand Rapids! It was absolutely surreal and so many things happened that were affirming to me not only as a Multi-Racial person, but also as a Choctaw and Cherokee woman. Despite everything else going on, I'm so happy with how far I've come with my identity and reconnecting in just under a year. It's been a beautiful ride and one I hope to continue forever.  Thank you to all of you who've been incredibly supportive and have helped buoy me through the rough patches. 38 - Touching Base and Interracial Relationships
After our month long journey through "When They See Us," we're going to be switching gears! Between all of the maternal feelings stirred up from watching the series, comments from a family member, and writing my children's book, I've been thinking a lot about interracial relationships. I just wanted to share my thoughts with all of you and talk about our experiences if you've gone through some of the same things. Also, now that we're solidly in the second year of the podcast, I have a lot of thoughts about the directions and projects for the future. I would also love your input! 37 - I'm Surviving - When They See Us Part 4
We have reached an end of an era! This is the last part of the beautiful work of art that is "When They See Us" directed by Ava DuVernay. Because most of this part focuses on Korey and what he went though as a teen in the adult prison system, it's probably the hardest episode to watch. However, his story serves as a metaphor for everyone's journey as one of the five teens persecuted because of other people's pride, prejudices, and unwillingness to challenge their own world views. Like the other Central Park 5, Korey Wise was innocent of both the crime and of the dark sides of the justice system. He goes from that innocence to the extremes of torture, but he remained strong and came out the other side as an amazing man who has more than proved that sometimes we're stronger than we think. The last 15 or so minutes of this part are so inspiring and beautiful and I hope you got to go on this journey with me so that you could see.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this miniseries if you watched it! Don't forget, the giveaway for stickers ends September 1st. All you have to do is sign up for the newsletter containing show notes and updates in a short, convenient email between now and midnight September 1st EST to enter.  Have a colorful week!   Natalie More of Some Kind of Brown Offerings Instagram Twitter Patreon Buy a Coffee New Merch E-mail List Sign Up Facebook Page Facebook Group Music at: https://www.purple-planet.com

35 - They Hate Us Out There - When They See Us Part 3
We're over halfway through "When They See Us" and I'm still surprised by how things are unfolding. I think that I'm moving through the stages of grief with these parts. Part one was denial and anger, part two was acceptance and just being disappointed at the corruption I already knew was there, and part three has made me angry. I'm pretty sure that's not the correct order, but what can you do? This part skips forward in time again through very clever cinematography to when Yusef, Ray, Antron, and Kevin are set free and discover what life is like as a convicted felon and sex offender. I talk a little bit about our justice system and my problems with prison, but nothing gets the point across like the documentary "13th" by the same director of this miniseries. I highly recommend that you check this out whether you're in the US or not.  If you missed last Friday's episode, we now have a newsletter that will give you easier access to the show notes and any information I link in them. If you sign up for the newsletter between now and September 1st, you'll be automatically entered into the giveaway for some awesome stickers! Continuing on with "When They See Us," I'm back with part 2 and this time without the tears. I learned my lesson with the first episode and I seriously appreciate those of you who let me cry on your shoulder, or rather in your ears, last week. This episode in particular of the 4 piece series is really pertinent in the scope of current events that happened in the US this weekend and I have a few announcements at the end. I hope you enjoy this next installment and join me for projects coming in the future! If you need something light hearted after this, I did just start a horror movie review podcast just for fun. When I first announced that I would be reviewing Netflix's mini-series, "When They See Us," I might have overestimated myself. I knew the story of The Central Park 5, but I didn't think how hard this would hit me. I have no regrets, but I'm going to be covering this series one episode at a time. I'll be posting an episode a week, so you're welcome to watch along with me or watch at whatever pace works for you. The episodes will be here if you're not ready right now.  This story is so incredibly important and I hope that you'll bear witness with me. 30 - Under the Confederate Monument ft. Several Tangents
The story of Will Norman and Gilbert Harris might not be well known, but their deaths and the Confederate Monument that stands where their deaths took place still affect me. Shelley and Talia from Several Tangents use their backgrounds in criminology to help me share their stories and shed light on the dark history of the monument that still stands downtown in the city where I grew up.  If lynching is a sensitive topic for you, I suggest not listening past the first 35 minutes. If these stories touch you, please consider sharing so that more people know about the atrocities committed against these men and the absolute disrespect of erecting a Confederate monument on a recorded lynching spot. These kinds of secrets cause division, but we can heal by acknowledging the pain of the past and how that trickles down to other generations. Shelley and Talia were amazing and I hope you enjoyed having them on the show. If you could, go show them some love! 29 - We're Out and Intersectionality
So my girlfriend and I are out! Pride and the days after were an emotional rollercoaster and we're both still processing. Through everything, we had an amazing experience and it feels a little bit like we're starting over, or at the very least starting a new chapter of our lives. If you haven't seen our pictures from Pride, they are on Instagram! Being already a minority, coming out as part of a marginalized group is a strange feeling. I'm not sure what that means for me, but I'm looking forward to exploring it. I hope that your Pride month has been amazing and continues to be as we come to the last week. 28 - New Pride, New Me
Just kidding, this episode is more like "New Pride, Same Me." I know I'm not due to post until next week, but I felt like this was important to put out now. I've been vulnerable before on my podcast and others, but what I talk about in this episode makes more more nervous than anything I've shared before. Coming from a very strict Christian upbringing, it took me years to shed the teachings and shame. When I did, I found myself and this Pride will not only be my first Pride, but my first Pride fully out. I'm coming out this Saturday to everyone in my family and that I know, so all positivity and vibes are welcome! This is going to be a new stage in my life and while I'm nervous, I'm excited as well! I hope you guys don't mind this departure from my regular topics! I hope that my ramblings about evaluating myself touch you or make you think that you're not alone if you've had any of these thoughts.  Love you guys! See you in two weeks!
