Ep 24: Prince of Monkeys With Nnamdi Ehirim (Book Chat)
My very first author book chat! In this episode, Nnamdi Ehirim and I talk about his debut novel, Prince of Monkeys, what makes him tick as a writer, and a sprinkle of bookish gossip. He even shared a fun fact! Synopsis of the Novel A provocative debut novel by a brilliant young Nigerian writer, tackling politics, class, spirituality, and power as a group of friends come of age in Lagos Growing up in middle–class Lagos, Nigeria during the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ihechi forms a band of close friends discovering Lagos together as teenagers with differing opinions of everything from film to football, Fela Kuti to spirituality, sex to politics. They remain close-knit until tragedy unfolds during an anti-government riot. Exiled from Lagos by his concerned mother, Ihechi moves in with his uncle’s family, where he struggles to find himself outside his former circle of friends. Ihechi eventually finds success by leveraging his connection with a notorious prostitution linchpin and political heavyweight, earning favor among the ruling elite. But just as Ihechi is about to make his final ascent into the elite political class, he reunites with his childhood friends and experiences a crisis of conscience that forces him to question his world, his motives, and who he should become. Nnamdi Ehirim’s debut novel, Prince of Monkeys, is a lyrical, meditative observation of Nigerian life, religion, and politics at the end of the twentieth century. We go through life, sometimes, forgetting that we're not invincible. Even with hobbies and careers, our bodies need to take time to just do nothing and be OKAY with that. What’s on your bookish bucket list?  Plenty of people have a bucket list of things they want to do in their life before they die. You know, swimming with dolphins, or seeing the Northern Lights. Ep 3: The 7 Best Short Story Collections I've Ever Read
In this episode, I share seven short story collections that I 've enjoyed over the last five years. I think short stories have one certain benefit: they are short. And “short” doesn’t only mean the number of words or characters. It also means the fast pace, the single-minded plot, and the concise form. Also, I think it's a good way to bring back the habit of daily reading. Don't you think? Books Mentioned In This Episode How Long Til Black Future Month by N. K. Ep 2: Tips for Reading Multiple Books at a Time
Many people are serial readers, they pick up one book and read it cover-to-cover before putting it down. And then there are poly-readers like me. I juggle four, five, or even six books at any given time, never able -- or willing -- to choose just one. Some people have frowned at me when I mention how many books I'm reading and wonder if I even understand them. But I've nurtured this habit not because I'm flighty or easily bored -- or even because it's my job to read many books at a time. It's just because I find that life is simply better when lived among multiple books. These are some tips I’ve used to help handle reading more than one book at a time!
