Song Pong

By Song Pong

Song Pong is a music discovery podcast featuring guests from around world who love music, art, culture, food and conversation. Song Pong is hosted by artist John Freyer and educator Bekah Fisk. John and Bekah invented the game "Song Pong" back when Spotify introduced collaborative play lists. There are only two rules to Song Pong - #1 - You can't double post and #2 You have to listen to the entire last song before you post a response. Join us each week for new episodes and check out the "Let's Play Song Pong" playlist on Spotify. Twitter - @playsongpong

Episode 10 - Jason Alley

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
So for the final episode of Season 1, John and Bekah play an extended game of SongPong with Chef Jason Alley. We somehow break all the Song Pong rules, while realizing our number 2 rule is actually an unenforceable suggestion. Chef Jason Alley is a founding partner of Alley/Jones Hospitality, he is the Small business liaison and Policy advisor to the mayor of Richmond (we like call him the Restaurant Tzar) . Alley co-founded Ben’s Friends RVA, a regional chapter of the nationwide support group for sober food and beverage people. His former restaurants’ Comfort and Pasture were highly celebrated for featuring local products prepared simply, with contemporary interpretations of classic Southern flavors. In 2018 Comfort’s business model shifted to donating all profits to fight hunger in the greater Richmond area. They partnered with Feed More, Richmonds core hunger relief agency, as well as No Kid Hungry. When he’s not cooking or playing in his Spanglish Ramones cover band, Los Ramones, he's spending time with his wife and four amazing kids.

This week John and Bekah interview Zarela Maldonado, who is a development director at Partners in Health. We talk about her experiences with sound healing, her short lived desire to be an ethnomusicologist, and the connection between music and alzheimer's disease which led us all to think about what we’d put on our own memory jogging playlists. We also announce our first annual Facebook live Song-Pong-A-Thon on New Year's Eve from 8pm to Midnight.

Episode 6 - Michele Mitrani & Joe Cassidy of Forgetmenaut

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
This week we talk to the band Forgetmenaut, made up of Bekah's friends Michele Mitrani and Joe Cassidy who live in upstate NY. When they are not making music or playing Song Pong, Joe and Michele work in healthcare and the judicial system. Joe is a County Court Judge and Supreme Court Justice (of NY, not the same thing as US) and Michele worked as the town historian of Trumansburg and knows quite a bit about the history and proper pronunciation of the first synthesizer MOOG, which doesn't actually have the expected "ooohh" sound in its middle. Think toad with an M and a G! We invited them to join the Song Pong Alumni Association because posting 2 songs was not enough song for their pong!
