Lana's Day at Church by Linda Lockett

Lana's Day at Church by Linda Lockett

Lana's Day at Church Written and Read by Linda Lockett

Linda Lockett is author of Lana’s Day at Church which reflects her early childhood’s rural Southern African American church experience.

The story reminisces Lana’s, a little Black girl’s view, combined with Linda’s own special memories of long Sunday rides from town to attend church out in the country.  “I think my most memorable annual event at Prairie Chapel Missionary Baptist Church is the ‘Beating of the Drums’ during the ‘8th of May’ celebration. That is the original date that each of African Americans churches in Mississippi’s Golden Triangle region celebrate President Abraham Lincoln freeing of the slaves. President Biden and Congress has made this celebration the federal Juneteenth holiday.”

“The ‘8th of May’ celebration was a big deal. I would be dancing with the other kids outside on the church grounds to the rhythmic beat of the drums, while mothers of the church laid out their best cooking on the church benches under the big old shade trees.  I made the rounds to taste everybody’s spread.”

Even after signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on 19th of June 1865, Linda explains, “every Sunday mornings, Black churches in America are still a source for a cultural, social, and spiritual experience. It is a place in which Black folks can go to feel a sense of belonging, and to mobilize on issues and unmet equities.”

The colorful illustrations of Lana’s Day at Church not only feature culture and community that is found throughout the streetways of historic Catfish Alley and the Tombigbee Bridge, the book celebrates a legacy of living history. Lana’s story combines family and faith, hope, and love. It is a story to certainly please parents, grandparents, and children alike.

About the Author: Linda lives in the Las Vegas metropolitan area where she is a higher education professor, with interest, and publications in the areas of Religion and Politics, and Climate Change. She is a member of the Henderson Writers Group (HWG) of Las Vegas, and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). She has worked with the St. Louis Black Repertory Company Children's Theater as actor and Camp Rep Instructor. As a former pre-school teacher, she enjoys writing about happy events of childhood for young readers. Linda also writes non-fiction, science-fiction, lyrics and poetry. Written by Kyle Stück

Kyle was born in the jungles of Ecuador, a magical land laden with mystical and wise jaguars, empanadas, and a cool air that has yet to be matched. After graduating college with a B.S. in Digital Cinema, Kyle found a new home in the Ozark Mountains and began his journey as an author: publishing Weird horror and sci-fi stories, along with some angsty poetry. When he's not writing, hosting podcasts on Ominous Media, or describing himself in the third-person, Kyle busies himself with absorbing all forms of media (mainly spooky stuff) or eating and drinking with family, friends, and other creators.

Check out all the cool stuff Kyle has going on.
