#48 - Exodus by Bob Marley and The Wailers (With Our Special Guest, Bram Wooley!)
At the end of 2023, Rolling Stone published some small adjustments to the 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums. Among those changes was a decision to drop Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers, and replace it by moving up their album Exodus, an album that had previously been in the #71 spot.
Given that unique change, we thought we would re-share our original review with Bram Wooley, for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!
-----------------------
It is always comforting to revisit an artist we have reviewed before, and this time we also had the pleasure of inviting back the same guest who joined us last time we reviewed Bob Marley and The Wailers. You may remember when Bram joined us for our review of Legend. This time, Bram helps us unpack this iconic album and all the amazing hits it contains!

#103: 3 Feet High And Rising by De La Soul
De La Soul! We learn so much with this one, checking in with some old school rap from a simpler time when samples were just samples, and real instruments were part of the creation of songs. It feels fitting that album #103 features a 3 in the title.
We hope you enjoy this look back at their iconic album, 3 Feet High And Rising!

After last week's look at Led Zeppelin, The Clash brings us back to back self-titled albums. We'll take a listen, explore what this must have sounded like to those late 70s listeners, and ask whether this belongs here at 102 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest albums.

A New Update to the Rolling Stone List??
Wait a minute… Rolling Stone made changes to their 500 greatest albums list? And they didn't notify us first?? Yes, the rumors are true. As the calendar year turned, news broke that there are 8 new albums on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest albums, and 8 have been removed and replaced. We'll tell you more about these changes, and talk about what it means for The Sound Logic Podcast!

#101: Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
We're back! We're finally moving into a new season, and into the triple digit albums, kicking things off with Led Zeppelin's iconic debut record. This is an album we reviewed all the way back in November of 2019, when this album was ranked #29 on the 2012 Rolling Stone list. We'll talk about the change in ranking, and then revisit our original review in this week's episode.
We hope you enjoy, and we're glad to be back!

A Tribute to Robbie Robertson, and revisiting The Band with Tyrell Lissen
On August 9th, Canadian music icon Robbie Robertson passed away. Robertson was a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and movie score composer. He was part of one of our favorite bands, The Band, of which we've reviewed two of their incredible albums (self-titled at #57, and Music From Big Pink at #100). Robertson's work with the Band was instrumental in creating the Americana music genre. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of the Band, and into Canada's Walk of Fame, with the Band and on his own.
In tribute, we thought it would be nice to revisit our conversation with Tyrell Lissen, host of the incredible The Band: A History podcast. We also encourage you to go check out Andrew Hickey's (our special guest on our review of Back To Mono) latest episode of A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs where he talks specifically about The Band and their hit song, The Weight.

Was It Sound Logic? Re-Ranking Albums 91 to 100
We made it to 100! That nice round number means that the time has come once again for us to review and re-rank the last 10 albums. We had a great time reminiscing over the music we have listened to, with some incredible guests including our own daughters! And we're gearing up for our next block of albums. We're busy getting ready for this next batch - stay tuned to hear more as we continue to go through this list of the greatest albums!
As always, we love getting feedback from you! Please send us a message and tell us what you like about these re-ranking episodes, and what you might have us do differently. Leave us a voicemail, and maybe you will be the next guest on the podcast!

#100: Music From Big Pink by The Band (with our special guest, Jason Crane!)
We made it to 100!!! We're thrilled to have a Canadian group here in this milestone slot - even if it is an album we've already previously reviewed. We'll introduce the episode talking about the position shift of this fantastic album from The Band, dropping from 34 on the previous list all the way down to the 100 spot.
This week we will also revisit a conversation with Jason Crane (podcast host of The Jazz Session and A Brief Chat!), his second time on the podcast (go back and listen to Ep. 12 - Miles Davis' Kind of Blue if you haven't already). Jason joined us to help us understand why this mostly-Canadian band called The Band is so important (at the time we were pretty clueless!).

#99: Red by Taylor Swift (with our special guests, Lily Jones and Anika Wideman!)
We think that if Taylor Swift made a "Taylor's Version" of The Sound Logic Podcast, she'd probably get our oldest children - Lily and Anika - to join us as our very special guests (or are they the hosts?)!!
Taylor Swift's iconic album Red, was her crossover from her country music beginnings. A beloved favorite of Swifties the world over, we're taking a look to figure out some of the nuances of this album, it's inclusion in the Rolling Stone list, and how it will stand the test of time. We'll see what our guests think - our youngest guests on The Sound Logic Podcast - and reflect on our own thoughts about this global music superstar.

#98: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams (with our special guests, Pia Smal and Susan Marshall!)
If you were a teenager in the 90s who totally missed out on Lucinda Williams, you're not alone! Mike and Ben have been scratching their heads wondering how they missed this fantastic album - enough so that we reached out to have some guests join us! State College, PA friends of Ben, Pia Smal and Susan Marshall, got to see Lucinda Williams when she visited State College a few years back, and we're thrilled to have them with us on this episode of the podcast!

#97: Master of Puppets by Metallica (with our special guest, Peter Buck!)
Yes, we realize it may have been more appropriate to have a guest named Peter Buck on our last episode when we discussed R.E.M... but we think you'll agree that THIS Peter Buck is far more suited to talk about metal! We're thrilled to have a guest who has actually taught a class on metal music - especially one with as much love and appreciation for Metallica's iconic Master of Puppets album! This album has jumped from its one time place at #167 all the way up into the top 100 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest albums. We're in for a special treat here, as Peter brings his wealth of music composition knowledge, and draws the lines and connects the dots between classical music, jazz, rock, and thrash metal. We hope you have as much fun on this journey as we did!

#96: Automatic For The People by R.E.M. (with our special guest, Scott Williams!)
In 2021, the world lost a passionate R.E.M. fan when Michael Iafrate passed away. Michael was an incredible individual who Ben had met at a conference after discovering their shared love of faith, justice, and music. Michael was described in his obituary as the following: Father. Partner. Son. Brother. Friend. Activist. Liberation theologian. Singer-songwriter. Musician. Magician. Artist. Vegetarian. Voice impersonator. Advocate. Bibliophile. Writer. Teacher. Student. Seeker. Punk. We share this conversation in his honor, joined by his friend, Scott Williams, who shared fandom of this band and this album with Michael. R.E.M.'s iconic album, Automatic For The People comes in at #96 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest albums of all time, and we can't wait to talk about this one in honor of Michael Iafrate. We hope you enjoy this conversation!

#95: Take Care by Drake
Whether you know him as Drizzy, 6 God, Champagne Papi, OVO, or just Drake, we're heading to The Six (or is it The 6ix?) and getting into it with some Canadian content from Drake's album, Take Care! This may be the artist who grew up closest to where Mike and Ben were from, so perhaps there's some geographic connection here - we'll have to explore that and other things that come up on this album review as we continue our journey through Rolling Stone's list of the greatest albums! We're getting close to finishing the top 100!

#94: Fun House by The Stooges
Three Stooges? Nope, it's Iggy Pop, and he's showing up with his Stooges band for their iconic album Fun House! This album is sometimes called the birth of punk music, and it's definitely rough around the edges, with just over 30 minutes of audio squeezed in to seven tracks. Is this album great? It moved way up from the 2012 list, shifting from 191 to #94. We'll break it down, and talk about what makes this great and whether we think it deserves to be here on this list!

#93: Supa Dupa Fly by Missy Misdemeanor Elliott
Ben isn't always the brightest guy - he didn't even notice that this title was very close to Curtis Mayfield's Superfly! We'll stumble through another review - this time an iconic hip hop album from Missy Misdemeanor Elliott! Missy's attitude and longtime partnership with superstar producer, Timbaland, make this one worth talking about. Listen to hear what we thought!

#92: Axis: Bold As Love by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Is this the first time we've completed all the albums that a group created on our podcast? It just might be, as we spend time with The Jimi Hendrix Experience for their second album, our THIRD to review on this list of the greatest albums. There is a clear correlation to John Mayer here (we talk about that) and you can see something building from their debut (Are You Experienced?), through this one, to their final album (Electric Ladyland). What did we think, and how does this fit with these three incredible albums from a guitar virtuoso? We'll press play, drop the needle, and find out more!

#91: Darkness On The Edge Of Town by Bruce Springsteen (with our special guest, Greg Milinovich!)
It doesn't feel like darkness when a special guest brings new light to an album! We were fortunate to have Greg Milinovich join us this week to talk about the second album on this list from Bruce Springsteen. Greg is a local minister, but has a deep passion for finding sacred things in the day to day experience. We know you'll appreciate his perspective on The Boss, and how this album fits in with his other great ones. What did we think of this one? We'll speculate wildly, and consider what makes this one great and worth its ranking on Rolling Stone's list, on this week's episode of The Sound Logic Podcast!

Sound Logic Upbeats and Beatdowns - Remembering Gordon Lightfoot
In the midst of recording our next block of albums, beloved Canadian artist, Gordon Lightfoot passed away on May 1, 2023. Learning of his passing hit us harder than we expected. In today's episode we take a look back at our journey of discovering this award-winning legend, often referred to "Canada's Poet Laureate," and the way his music is still speaking to us today. Do you have any memories and reflections on Lightfoot or his music? What is your favorite Gordon Lightfoot album? We'd love to hear your thoughts as we celebrate his legacy together.

#90: After The Gold Rush by Neil Young
Finally, another Canadian album on the list! This week we're taking a listen to Neil Young's second solo album, After The Gold Rush. This was an album that at one point was thought to be the soundtrack to a film of the same name! Voters listed this one as the 90th best album on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the greatest albums of all time. What does this one have to do with the other great albums on this list, and why don't we hear more music like this these days? We'll speculate wildly, and consider what makes this one great on this week's episode of The Sound Logic Podcast!

#89: Baduizm by Erykah Badu
Oh, on and on and on and on... our podcast keeps moving like a rolling stone. This week we get to hang out with the Queen of Neo Soul, Erykah Badu, and her breakthrough debut album, Baduizm. What did we think of this album, which Rolling Stone's voters listed as the 89th greatest album of all time, and how does it fit with the other great albums through music history? We'll talk about that, how cool and soothing Badu's voice is, and what makes this one great on this week's episode of The Sound Logic Podcast!

#88: Hunky Dory by David Bowie
Life is just Hunky Dory when we get to talk about David Bowie, and that's no April Fools joke!! This album has gone through some ch-ch-ch-changes, moving from #107 on the original list to #108 on the 2012 list to its current position here at #88. But what did we think of this album, which Rolling Stone's voters listed as the 88th greatest album of all time, and how does it fit with the other great albums through music history? You'll have to tune in to find out!

#87: Bitches Brew by Miles Davis (with our special guest, Nick Maia!)
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, Dogfish Head Brewery created their own Bitches Brew -- a dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root.
