The music in Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days - with Milena Fessman

The music in Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days - with Milena Fessman

This episode is about the Oscar-nominated film Perfect Days from director Wim Wenders. The film follows the simple, quiet and daily routine of Hirayama, a man in Tokyo who cleans unique toilets designed by architects, dotted throughout the city. The music in this film is central to the film, giving us a glimpse into the unexpressed sides of Hirayama; the person he is, and maybe even the young man he once was.

This episode’s guest is Milena Fessman, a veteran music supervisor and radio DJ based in Berlin. She currently hosts her own weekly show for Radio Eins/RBB called ‘Free Falling’ and in 1989 she founded Cinesong. Milena Fessmann teaches music supervision and copyright clearing at DFFB Berlin, KHM and Filmuni Babelsberg and is advisory board member of the World Soundtrack Academy.

The music in 'How To Have Sex' with Catherine Grieves

The music in 'How To Have Sex' with Catherine Grieves

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

This episode is about the use of music in ‘How To Have Sex’, the directorial debut from Molly Manning Walker, released in the US last week and streaming on MUBI in the UK. Our guest is Catherine Grieves, UK music supervisor veteran and director at music supervision collective 45RPM.

The film follows a group of young women on an alcohol-fueled, hedonistic holiday in the Greek Islands and is an important exploration into how the worlds of friendship, consent, peer pressure are brought together in a high-octane environment. We talk about music’s role in these kinds of holidays, how music can influence our behaviour, how in a particular context it can help us feel connected, or alone.

The music in 'Anatomy of a Fall' with Thibault Deboaisne

The music in 'Anatomy of a Fall' with Thibault Deboaisne

This episode is about the music in the Golden Globe-nominated, Palme D’or-winning film ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, from director Justine Triet.

With Thibault Deboaisne, music supervisor and founder of boutique agency Sound Division.

We explore the absence of a composed score in the film, the circumstantial decision to use a steel drum cover of 50 Cent's PIMP as the film's central motif, and the importance of the piano in Justine Triet’s films.
