Ghost Marrow

Ghost Marrow

Today’s guest deejay is Aurielle Zeitler, AKA Ghost Marrow.

I’m fond of this mix not only because it’s beautiful but also because of the seemingly incongruous selection of musicians. There are songs by Roedelius (listen to his mix for Soundwave here) and Christoph de Babalon, songs by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno and Grouper, and so on. Aurielle’s mix is, at one, comfortingly familiar and delightfully unexpected.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Roger Richards, founder of Extreme.

See you then.

Radboud Mens

Radboud Mens

Today’s guest deejay is Radboud Mens.

Hailing from the Netherlands, Mens stands at the forefront of experimental electronic music, pushing the boundaries of perception with each composition.

Guest deejay Ard Bit (listen to Ard’s mix here) introduced me to Radboud, and after listening to a few of Radboud’s albums, I invited him to guest deejay as well. You’ll understand after hearing Radboud’s mix, a delightful sampling of his work.

Radboud’s music is a seamless blend of stillness, textures, and gentle rhythms that fascinate or lull you to sleep. Me? I’ve been listening to it all week, at the beginning and end of my workday.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Ghost Marrow.

Sanderson Dear

Sanderson Dear

Today’s guest deejay is Sanderson Dear, the founder of Stasis Recordings.

Sanderson shared a mix with us last year after Rubén Tamayo (listen to Rubén’s mix here) was kind enough to introduce us. I enjoyed Sanderson’s mix so much that I asked if he’d return, and he did not disappoint. Today’s mix is just as fantastic and surprising as his last mix. Maybe more so.

Before I go, if you dig today’s mix, and I know you will, you’ll be happy to learn that Sanderson does a monthly In Stasis show on Rogue State Radio on the first Sunday of each month. You can look forward to Sanderson’s next show on February 4.

The next release from Stasis Recordings is a digital EP by AP Organism, hitting shops Friday, January 26.

Ard Bit

Ard Bit

Today’s guest deejay is Ard Bit.

Ard first hit my radar when three of his tracks popped up in Roel Funcken’s mega-mix for Soundwave. Soon after, Ard’s music kept appearing on my Discover Weekly Mix on Spotify or various ambient mixes I came across. And each time, I had to check the playlist to find out who was making the fantastic music I was hearing. It was like the universe was telling me something. I took the hint and asked Ard to share a mix with us.

Ard says his mix is “a moment with some favourite tracks, mixing, manipulating and jamming live with the lyra and field recordings.”

And this mix is beautiful.

I’ve only had a week to listen to Ard’s mix and let it be the soundtrack for my morning walk with my dog. She and I go to the park to play ball. The park is under a path for jets, so it’s pretty dramatic. Ard’s mix seamlessly slipped into my environment and experience, lending a nostalgic cast for something happening now. The warm sounds, the static, and the sizzle played nicely off the jets’ engines. There are even sounds of dogs barking in Ard’s mix. Perfect!

Tell me how your listing experience went.

See you next week.

Max Würden

Max Würden

Today’s guest deejay is Max Würden.

I discovered Max on one of my deep dives on Spotify. It was Max’s Format that captured my imagination. The album is warm and wistful. It feels like a ray of luxurious sunshine on a cold winter day. I don’t know. It’s subjective. Maybe you’d get something different from your listening experience, but that’s what it was like for me.

Max is known for diverse soundscapes and soundtrack production . Proficient as a drummer, he crafts sounds from silence. His works span various awards, including nominations for the Peer Raben Music Award. Max boasts a prolific discography across labels like Kompakt Records and Farfield Records. His recent endeavors involve album releases like Landmark and Script, alongside exhibitions and contributions to the renowned Pop Ambient series. Max’s versatility shines through collaborations, and film soundtracks.

So naturally I invited Max to guest deejay on Soundwave. I was delightfully surprised.

Max sent me a mix steeped in jazz. I thought there’d be a lot more jazz (or Black classical music) on Soundwave, but sadly, it’s a genre that is neglected on this show. Until now, that’s it. Max digs deep and serves up rarities that should become part of your daily rotation. But it’s not all jazz, either. Max included the ambient and instrumental music you’ve come to expect on Soundwave and deftly weaves it with jazz that’s seamless.

See you next week.

King Dub

King Dub

I was iniated into dub last century when I picked up the 21st Century Dub compilation cassette. I already loved reggae, but dub was much more expansive, mysterious, and supple. It was psychedelic. And so, over the years, I explored dub. King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry were my guides in this dimension.

The more I listened, the more I heard dub’s influences everywhere. I heard it in punk, goth, industrial, etc. Dub is singular because it can absorb any genre’s musical distinctiveness and make it its own.

I’d often don the guide of King Dub during my late-night shows at WMFO. I’d talk in a patois and pitch shift my voice down a notch to sound like a deejay from the deepest realms of dub. And I’d play some of the deepest, low-end frequency dub I could get my hands on. Today’s mix captures the spirits of those nights. I hope you enjoy it.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Tim McManus of Island House Recordings.

See you then.

The Myths Collection

The Myths Collection

Sub Rosa, was founded in ’84 in Belgium, blazing trails in experimental soundscapes. They're the mad scientists of music, pushing the boundaries and throwing conventional norms out the window.

Their catalog? It's a wild ride through the musical wilderness. They've got everything from electronic experiments to industrial chaos, ambient soundscapes, contemporary classical masterpieces, and avant-garde jazz that'll blow your mind. But what really makes Sub Rosa stand out is their love for the rebels—the artists who dare to challenge the very essence of what music should be.

And they don't stop at just albums, oh no. Sub Rosa goes all out with multimedia projects that'll make your brain do somersaults. They're all about musicians teaming up with visual wizards and sound art installations that'll mess with your head in the best way possible. These guys don't just make music; they create intellectually stimulating masterpieces.

And their following? Let’s just say it’s a tribe of fearless adventurers and collectors who appreciate life’s finer, weirder things. Sub Rosa’s got ’em hooked on their complex and thought-provoking works, and rightfully so.

But that's not the end of the story. Over the years, Sub Rosa has been a launchpad for groundbreaking artists, thrusting them onto the global stage. They've cemented their legacy as pioneers in the world of experimental and avant-garde music, introducing the world to the sonic revolutionaries.

Now, let's dive into Myths Foundation, a treasure trove of four LPs and three EPs that marked their artistic inception. Starting a record label was the furthest thing from their minds back then. These folks were all about crafting intricate and mysterious creations tha

The journey was no cakewalk, my friend. Broke students, they were trying to keep the artistic flames burning while drowning in academia. So, they took it slow and steady, releasing one record per year. It might’ve seemed impractical, but through a series of life-changing encounters, they stitched together these sonic marvels.

These early records? They weren’t just music but mysterious artifacts waiting to be unraveled. With each release, Myths Foundation delved deeper into the abyss of creative exploration. Against all odds, these records marked the beginning of an epic adventure, setting the stage for a remarkable journey that defied expectations.

Joseph Aleo

Joseph Aleo

In a dimly lit underground club, the audience gathered, a congregation of the techno-faithful. The night was young, but the atmosphere was charged with a palpable sense of anticipation. The curtain of reality was about to be drawn back, revealing glimpses of the sublime and the chaotic. As the stage lights flickered to life, Skinny Puppy took their positions. It was a peculiar, chilly autumn evening when the temperature outside seemed to mirror the eerie chill that permeated the venue. “Spahn Dirge (Live)” began its haunting journey, a sonic invocation that pulled the crowd into a trance. Images of distorted realities flashed across screens, intertwining with the hypnotic soundscape. It was as if the audience had stepped through a tear in the fabric of the universe, a glimpse into a surreal and phantasmagorical realm. The live performance was not merely a concert but a communion with the otherworldly.

Meanwhile, outside in the drizzle-laden night, a solitary pilgrim embarked on a personal odyssey. With headphones clamped firmly in place, they ventured forth, their every step synchronized with the mournful strains of God’s “Lord, I’m On My Way.” The lyrics became a mantra of longing and existential uncertainty, the perfect accompaniment to their solitary voyage.

In a world consumed by noise and chaos, two friends sought solace in the simplicity of nature. Their canoe sliced through the tranquil waters of a remote river, and Andy Hawkins and Bill Laswell’s “Headwaters” played softly on a portable speaker. The music harmonized with the rustle of leaves and the gentle gurgle of the river, forging a profound connection between man and the natural world.

Back within the subterranean club, Echthros unfurled “Iyov” upon the eager assembly. The song was a tempest of aggression and discord, a sonic maelstrom that mirrored modern existence’s chaotic pulse. It became a cathartic release, a collective purging of pent-up frustrations and societal dissonance.

In the solitude of his studio, Justin Broadrick embarked on a sonic experiment. “Guitar Two” emerged as a mesmerizing composition, distorted guitar sounds woven together in a hypnotic haze. It was a journey into the depths of sound, an exploration of the boundaries of creativity and expression.

These diverse musical vignettes, seemingly disjointed in their tonalities and emotional cadence, converge without incongruity. Today’s mix is an expedition through the corridors of introspection and catharsis.

See you next week.

  2. God “Lord I'm On My Way”

Ki-Oni

Ki-Oni

Today’s guest deejay is Chuck Soo-Hoo, AKA Ki Oni.

We have Mark Trecka to thank for today’s show. After Mkl Anderson, AKA Drekka, shared a mix with us (listen to it here), I asked him who he knew would want to guest deejay on Soundwave, and he highly recommended Mark. Mark had to pass, but he mentioned that he is helping Ki Oni with publicity for his new forthcoming record on AKP, and I wondered if I’d be interested in inviting him. I luxuriated in Ki Oni’s A Leisurely Swim To Everlasting Life album, and here we are today with an exquisite mix for you to enjoy.

Now that I think about it, we have Drekka to thank for today’s show because he’s the one who got this ball of wax rolling. And these connections are one of the unexpected delights of Soundwave in the last few years. Four people are the furthest the degrees of separation of guest deejays on Soundwave. It’s only a matter of time before that extends to five people. As I said, unexpected delight.

Another unexpected delight: Chuck chose his pseudonym, Ki Oni, as an homage to a Japanese monster movie creature of the same name — a tree with a human face that spews flower pedals from its mouth. Sublime.

On a personal note, I’ve enjoyed listening to Ki Oni’s mix while walking my dog, particularly around a lovely community spot at a nearby cliff during the golden hour. It was a nice moment.

Join us again next week. I’ll be behind the virtual wheels of steel.

See you then.

Garek Druss

Garek Druss

Today’s guest deejay is Garek Druss.

Garek is another musician I was introduced to through Mkl Anderson AKA, Drekka (listen to Mkl’s mix for Soundwave here). I asked Mkl who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave, and he highly recommended Garek. I didn’t doubt Mkl for a second, but I wantto get a feel for the artists I plan to invite on the show. I listened to Garek’s OHR EYN SOF - Youth Eternal album, and Iknew I was in good hands.

Garek’s mix is disparate yet strangely cohesive. In its way, it reflects Garek’s journey, an exploration of the human condition. Meaning is elusive, lurking just beyond the edge of perception. I could be projecting, of course.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Ki Oni.

Riz Maslen

Riz Maslen

Today’s guest deejay is Riz Maslen.

Riz’s last mix for Soundwave is what I imagine a mix from Wes Anderson might sound like at first. But then Riz pivoted to Egyptian jazz-inspired psychedelic rock, to trip-hop, and moved on. And yet, it all hung together seamlessly.

I was so delighted with Riz’s mix that I invited her to share more beautiful music. And, wow, did Riz Maslen deliver!

Riz’s mix is a fusion of both contemporary and classics, but I was instantly smitten with Arooj Aftab’s “Inayaat” (check out my mix featuring Arooj). Riz’s mix will swaddle you in an immersive listening experience. It’s been the soundtrack to my morning commutes for the last few weeks, and it’s a pleasure to share it with you.

Riz’s new second album will be released in 2024 from Aircooled, her new band born out of lockdown with Oliver Cherer, Justin Welch, and Katherine Wallinger.

Catch Aircooled at The Shacklewell Arms in London on October 18.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Garek Druss.

Adam Parks

Adam Parks

Today’s guest deejay is Adam Parks.

Adam is a Virginia-based artist and musician with two main music projects: timber rattle and Lightning White Bison. timber rattle is his primary endeavor, exploring the connection between primordial sound, landscape, and human relationships with space. Lightning White Bison is more abstract and experimental, incorporating field recordings and improvisations.

I met Adam through Mkl Anderson, AKA, Drekka, after Mkl shared a mix on Soundwave. As is my want, I asked Mkl who he knew would also share a mix with us, and he highly recommended Adam Parks. Mkl said Adam is his spirit animal, and it is anyone’s guess what kind of mix he might come up with.

Mkl was dead on.

I often describe Soundwave as a show where each track in the guest deejay’s mix is lovingly handpicked. Adam’s devotion and adoration are evident, from rare tracks to found sounds to field recordings. The first words in Adam’s mix describe it best: “Oh, beautiful. Wow!”

Adam has some words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our returning guest deejay will be Riz Maslen.

See you then.

This mix seeks to dissolve into a more contiguous “piece,” composed of music that is often inherently contemplative, recursive, ritualistic, and, hence, meditative, music that willfully allows itself to act as a canvas for environmental sounds (some of which are contained therein, others of which are warmly invited from wherever one may be listening), and music that embodies the notion of “fidelity” as faithfulness to the spirit of sound, process, place and/or moment.

Mark O’Shea

Mark O’Shea

Today’s guest deejay is Mark O’Shea, founder of Winter-Light, a label specializing in ambient, experimental, and drone soundscapes.

Winter-Light kept turning up in my life. Musicians for the label would appear in mixes from guest deejays on Soundwave, or I listen to on Spotify. After hearing Electronic Death Black DogsHinterland album and discovering it was yet another excellent release from Winter-Light, I took it as a hint from the universe that I should invite the label’s founder to guest deejay on Soundwave.

Mark’s mix is fantastic, and while most of it is new to me (always a delight), there were some tracks my musicians I’m quite fond of. Kloob made two appearances in Mark’s mix and was a guest deejay on Soundwave back in 2021. And RNGMNN? Wow, that takes me back to an inspired mix I did in 2008! And Hessel Veldman shared an enthralling mix on Soundwave just last year. Everyone who appears in Mark’s mix are new favorites. And I hope they are for you, too.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Adam Parks.

Aidan Baker

Aidan Baker

Today’s guest deejay is Aidan Baker.

I came across Aidan on one of my deep dives on Bandcamp and was struck by his music. Aidan, a Canadian musician currently residing in the creative hub of Berlin, has an impressive repertoire that spans solo work and collaborations with notable groups like Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble, and WERL

Baker’s musical ingenuity is particularly evident in his experimental guitar playing style, which draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, including Caspar Brötzmann, James Plotkin, Steve Albini, and Justin Broadrick. It’s a pleasure to have him curate this episode’s mix, a captivating compilation that showcases his unique musical sensibilities.

Want to hear more beautiful music? Just last week, Aidan released his new album, Tense Surfaces. I’ve been listing to it while I write today’s show notes while an ocean breeze wafts its way through my windows. It’s a lovely experience.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Mark O’Shea of the Winter-Light music label.

tttlllrrr

tttlllrrr

Today’s guest deejay is tttlllrrr.

I’ve known tttlllrrr for over a decade. I may have met him through Solipsistic Nation, my electronic music show.

I was immediately impressed with tttlllrrr’s pluck. He had a vision for a genre of music that hadn’t existed yet called Magicore, a mélange of metal, electronic dance music, video-game music, and Japanese pop music. Through his Magicore blog and mixes (here are ttwo you can listen to), tttlllrrr willed magicore into existence, which is in itself an act of magic. So tttlllrrr’s pretty cool.

Also, I like to collaborate, and tttlllrrr likes to collaborate, so we hit it off. Over the years, I’ve wrapped tttlllrrr into several of my harebrained schemes that are great fun, including inviting him to guest deejay on Soundwave.

When tttlllrrr sent me his mix three years ago, my reaction was, “Uh…”

I began Soundwave to deal with the quarantine’s stress and isolation during the pandemic’s early days. Ambient, classical, experimental, and instrumental music helped me through those first few months. What tttlllrrr shared was a mix that leaned hard into the experimental and instrumental and reflected tttlllrrr’s personality. And it was a mix I wasn’t in the headspace to listen to. So I shelved tttlllrrr’s mix for a later date and, in doing so, denied tttlllrrr’s expression of whatever he was thinking and feeling when he put together his mix. Not cool.

But over time, Soundwave has expanded its horizons. It’s mined more and more experimental and instrumental music. Christian Sager’s mix is a perfect example. So at long last, here it is!

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Aidan Baker.

See you then.

Philippe Neau

Philippe Neau

Today’s guest deejay is Philippe Neau.

The kind folks at Igloo Magazine introduced me to Philippe when they reviewed his 2022 album, A Quiet Place. Philippe explores tranquil environments, blending bird sounds and water with electronics to create meditative soundscapes. Simple and captivating. I was so enchanted that I invited Philippe to share a mix with us.

Some of the themes in Philippe’s mix revolve around rebellion, introspection, darkness, electronic experimentation, and sonic exploration. There is an emphasis on societal and personal struggles, expressed through the Beastie Boys’ cheeky anthem of defiance, “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party),” and the politically charged “Can’t Truss It” by Public Enemy. David Lynch’s “Noah’s Ark” and Scorn’s “Slumber:” delve into introspective and atmospheric territories, while Painkiller’s “Trailmarker” and the DJ Spooky’s “12 Nihilismus Dub” offer a glimpse into the experimental and industrial aspects of the mix. The presence of artists like Rockers Hi-Fi brings electronic elements and dub-inspired sounds, adding depth and dimension to the overall sonic landscape. Additionally, Philippe’s mix includes tracks by Robert Rich and B. Lustmord, Ø, and :zoviet*france:, which explore the ambient and textural side, creating a sense of mystery and darkness. I love all these songs, and you will, too.

See you then.

Drekka

Drekka

Today’s guest deejay is Mkl Anderson, AKA, Drekka.

One of the delights of Soundwave is the people I continue to meet through the guest deejays that appear on the show. Take Mkl. I met Mkl through Raziel Panic after the last mix he shared on Soundwave. Raziel highly recommended Mkl. There was no doubt that I would invite Mkl to share a mix with us, but that didn’t stop me from spending a delightful afternoon experiencing his music.

I’m still emotionally processing Mkl’s mix. I know that sounds pretentious as hell, so hear me out. Most times, someone sends me a mix, and I have an immediate reaction to it. But with Mkl’s mix, I feel like I keep unpacking stuff from it, which is why I’ve listened to it so damn much.

I love it, though, and I’ve also found that Mkl’s mix is the perfect soundtrack to play while telling my grandson fairy tales as he drifts off to sleep. I can’t think of a better compliment than that.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Philippe Neau.

See you then.

Mike Lazarev

Mike Lazarev

Today’s guest deejay is Mike Lazarev.

Mike and I go way back.

I met Mike through Solipsistic Nation, an electronic music show I produced. Mike recently launched Headphone Commute, an electronic and ambient music blog. We traveled in the same circles. Our paths were bound to cross.

Mike and I had a conversation years ago. I don’t recall what we were talking about, but what I distinctly remember is coming away from our conversation impressed with his sincerity and integrity.

Since that time, Headphone Commute has grown in depth and reach. It is now part of the dialogue in ambient and electronic music, Or, as their tagline says on their website, “honest music.” Integrity.

Also, during that time, Mike has released six albums. Each note on each song was lovingly played. Mike’s latest album, When You Are, explores new terrain. I could use words like “delicate,” “warm,” “evocative,” or “organic” to try and convey what Mike’s album feels like, but those words capture the experience of listening to When You Are. For me, it was getting lost in Mike’s music on a rare, dreary day in San Diego and reflecting on my life and family. It was a very moving experience, and I don’t know if it would have happened if Mike’s music hadn’t put me in that state of reverie.

How’s that?

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Drekka.

See you then.

In this mix, I focused on exploring the very edges of the sonic landscape, where beauty and destruction lie on opposite sides of the dynamic spectrum. Between them, one can hear the transmutation between organic and synthetic, fragile and brutal, beauty and fright. I really love the distorted build-ups originating in the gentle and soothing melodies, climaxing to their concerted peaks and then collapsing into beauty once again. It's in this contrast that we find ourselves forever bouncing between the darkness and the light, only to accept that there is no middle ground and that this journey is the way.

Tvärvägen

Tvärvägen

Today’s guest deejay is Henrik Öhberg, AKA, Tvärvägen.

I had the good fortune of meeting Henrik through Soundwave guest deejay Petter Lindhagen (listen to Petter’s mix here). After each show, I ask my guests who they think would share a mix on Soundwave, and Petter highly recommended Henrik, which led me to listen to Henrick’s music for an evening. The experience was everything I had hoped, and I extended an invitation to Henrik, and here he is today with his delightful mix.

Henrik’s fifth and latest album A Great Circle Route was released in January. The album was picked as New and Notable by the tastemakers at Bandcamp Daily. While A Great Circle Route owes a debt to Steve Reich’s American minimalism and the street compositions of Moondog, those influences are distilled through Henrik’s unique signature of soft, vaguely Nordic, melodic lines.

Tvärvägen began as Henrik’s experimental side hustle back in when he was part of the indie act Ironville and hip hop duo Amok. Soon enough, Tvärvägen was his main endeavor. Henrik’s been dabbling with post-classical music for string quartet and ethereal soundscapes. His songs have been featured in numerous TV and radio shows, documentaries, news programs, children’s shows, and more.

Carmen Rizzo

Carmen Rizzo

Today’s guest deejay is Carmen Rizzo.

Writing today’s show notes was a head trip. Carmen shared his first mix for Soundwave three years ago. That’s not a significant amount of time, but it feels like it. That was our first pandemic summer. You never knew if your next visit to the grocery store was going to be the one that exposed you to COVID and could kill you. Three years later and we’ve gotten along with our lives. Yes, COVID is still a threat, but now it’s manageable. Yes, we’ve all been changed by the experience, but hopefully, we’ve all grown somehow.

That’s where my mind went when I thought about what to say for today’s show notes.

I hope that Camren takes this in the spirit intended. Camrens music has been part of the soundtrack for my pandemic. I was already a fan of his before launching Soundwave, and he was on my list of people I wanted to guest deejay on the show. During that time, Carmen’s music has appeared on mixes from other guest deejays and in shows and mixes I listen to on Mixcloud and Spotify. Carmen’s music has been a constant presence in my life for the last three years.

No words from Carmen on his mix. No playlist. Carmen’s mix is personal and lovingly hand selected. You’ll have to experience it. I’ve been listing to it as I write these show notes, and I assure you, you’re in for an emotional journey.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Henrick Öhberg.

See you then.

Cole Peter

Cole Peter

Today’s guest deejay is Cole Peters.

I had the good fortune to meet Cole through Yann Novak (listen to Yann’s mixes four Soundwave here). I asked Yann who he thought would share a mix with us, and he highly recommended Cole. I could have sent Cole an invitation to guest deejay on Soundwave without listening to a note of his music. I trust Yann’s taste in music and artists that much. But of course, I listened to Cole’s music. Yann was spot on.

Cole’s mix is a unique blend of electronic and organic elements, creating a captivating sonic landscape that will take you on a mesmerizing journey. It’s okay if you lose yourself. That’s part of the journey, too.

Be sure to lose yourself in Cole’s latest album, Traces Blurs Signs, where he continues to eschew categorization.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Carmen Rizzo.

Raziel Panic

Raziel Panic

Today’s returning guest deejay is Raziel Panic. You can listen to Raziel’s previous mix for Soundwave here.

Raziel’s last mix defied my expectations. I naively assumed he would share a mix much like the music Raziel records and performs as YouShriek. Einstürzende Neubauten and Kraftwerk was not a surprise. Arvo Pärt was unexpected. Kitaro caught me entirely off guard.

And yet, where we are again, Raziel has delightfully baffled me.

Today’s mix is full of hypnotic melodies, haunting atmospheres, and evocative compositions. But those are just words. You have to experience Raziel’s mix for yourself. Headphones are perfect. But if you are one of those fortunate few with a decent sound system, crank that sucker and let Raziel’s mix rattle your windowpanes.

Raziel has a few words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Cole Peters.

Tim Dwyer

Tim Dwyer

Today’s guest deejay is Tim Dwyer.

I met Tim through Sanderson Dear, who get deejayed on Soundwave a few months ago (listen to Sanderson’s mix here). As is my want, I asked Sanderon who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave and he highly recommended Tim.

As it happens, both Tim and I are fellow devotees of the Excursions in Ambience compilation album series (listen to my Excursions in Ambience compilation retrospective here). That may explain why Tim’s mix, which features songs completely new to me, feels so familiar. It’s a delight to share Tim’s mix with you.

Tim has words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Raziel Panic.

See you then.

My 2021 album Excursion was a release born through influence. It was inspired by improvised live electronics, a deep love of electronic music from the 1990’s, and even the compilation series Excursions in Ambience, of which the album was named after. I wanted to revisit those influences for this mix, crafting a similar sonic tapestry, through a different lens. I’ve included the inspiring music that influenced me to start making music, as well as some new works that elicit that same emotional frequency. Enjoy the journey.

zakè

zakè

Today’s guest deejay is Zach Frizzell, AKA zakè.

I was introduced to zakè's captivating music by the talented Luke Entelis (listen to Luke’s mix four Soundwave here), and I'm excited to share his unique sonic tapestries with you.

Zach is the stateside label boss of the Past Inside the Present record label. Zach is also a multi-talented musician, composer, and sound artist. With a deep passion for exploring the intersection of sound and emotion, zaké weaves intricate sonic landscapes that transport listeners to ethereal realms. His musical journey began at a young age, as he discovered his love for experimenting with various instruments and sound manipulation techniques.

The songs in this collection share a common thread of introspection, contemplation, and a sense of profound emotional depth. Each composition invites the listener into a world of deep reflection, where silence and subtle nuances create powerful moments of introspection. Zach’s mix has been my companion during grey mornings. With my cup of coffee in hand, his music eases me into my work day, infusing even the most mundane tasks with intrigue.

Anne Chris

Anne Chris

Today’s guest deejay is Anne Chris.

Anne’s music is a beautiful blend of ambient, experimental, and modern classical styles. I was introduced to Anne’s through Soundwave guest deejay Peter van Cooten (listen to his mix here and here), host of Ambientblog and DreamScenes on Concertzender.

Based in the Netherlands, Anne Bakker is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer. Her music often incorporates field recordings, found sounds, and electronic elements to create unique and immersive soundscapes.

Anne has released several albums and EPs on labels such as Dronarivm, Whitelabrecs, and Rusted Tone Recordings. Her music has been described as “a delicate and hypnotic work that shines with an inner light” and “a moving and atmospheric experience.”

Many of the tracks in Anne’s mix feature minimalistic arrangements and slowly evolving textures, often exploring the sonic nuances of single notes or simple harmonic progressions. Using drones and sustained tones is also prevalent, creating a sense of sonic stasis or timelessness. Several pieces also feature acoustic instruments, such as piano, guitar, and strings, woven into the electronic soundscapes to create a delicate interplay between the organic and synthetic elements.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be zaké.

Austin Hill

Today’s guest deejay is Austin Hill of Aeroplane Recordings.

Soundwave guest deejay Steven Howard introduced me to Austin. I’ve known Steve for decades. If he recommends someone, I listen. And, as always, Steven didn’t disappoint. Neither did Austin.

Austin’s mix introduces his ambient productions to a broader audience and highlights the work of two other exceptional artists, Dan Rosen and Denver Bon, who create art through music.

Naneum

Naneum

Today’s guest deejay is Jon Solo, AKA Naneum.

This is Jon’s third time sharing a mix with us. I keep having Jon back because his mixes are like his own music: delicate, ephemeral, evoking rich and complex emotions. As I write this, it’s another grey day in a month we in San Diego are now calling Greypril. Jon’s mix is the perfect soundtrack for this morning. Everything in my neighborhood looks fragile in the cast of this grey illumination. Maybe Jon’s playlist will provide you with your own moment of serenitiy and tranquil quality, a sonic escape to a peaceful and introspective space.

Want to hear more music from Jon? You’ll be delighted to learn that his new album, Ollopa Othello, will be released this July through Electrofone Music.

Simon Grab

Simon Grab

Today’s guest deejay is Simon Grab.

Simon is a Swiss musician, producer, and sound artist who has released several albums and EPs. His music is known for its experimental and ambient soundscapes. Simon combines field recordings and electronic sounds to create unique sonic environments.

I discovered Simon Grab through his album Anthropocene Panic, a sonic artwork exploring human activity’s environmental impact. It’s a sinister and muscular piece of music that vividly depicts what the Anthropocene era feels like.

Simon has some words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Jon Solo.

See you then.

“Gargle Ceremony” has been published in Mensa Sonora, a book with cooking recipes and sound. Your invited to gather with your friends to gargle with raw fruit or vegetable juice while listening to the track. Find the recipe here.

The rest of the mix are left over files from longer recording sessions I did a while ago. At that time I categorised them with colour titles, which was more of an attempt to get out of file management chaos than a synesthesia moment. Funny enough, as I got used to the naming, nowadays I actually find the colour titles fit quite well. Those are all unpublished tracks. I might release them one day, or just leave it here at Soundwave.

Jonas Munk

Jonas Munk

Today’s guest deejay is Jonas Munk, AKA Manual, and one-half of Billow Observatory, with his partner, Jason Kolb.

Billow Observatory has appeared on several mixes on Soundwave, and I’m excited to have Jonas share his mix with us. Jonas says he selected music that inspired them since day one and some more recent discoveries.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Thomas runs the label Azure Vista Records. He has released two Billow Observatory albums, one of Jonas’s solo work and an album from Jason’s band, Auburn Lull. I eagerly anticipate their soon-to-be-released new album.

Jonas’s carefully curated selection of tracks in this mix all center around the interplay of ambient, electronic, and experimental music, woven together to create a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere. You can expect lush soundscapes, intricate melodies, and beautiful collaborations between artists like Harold Budd and Brian Eno with Daniel Lanois and Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. He also includes standout tracks from electronic music pioneers like Biosphere and Boards of Canada.

As I sit down at my kitchen table to begin another day's work, I can't help but feel grateful for the simple pleasures in life — a cup of coffee, the view of the world from my rooftop, and of course, Jonas’s mix playing in the background. It’s been a constant companion as I ease into my daily routine. I know you’ll feel the same way too. So grab your coffee, find a comfy spot, and let Jonas’s mix transport you to a world of sublime soundscapes and dreamy melodies.

Hekla

Hekla

Today’s guest deejay is Hekla.

I was introduced to Hekla through the kind folks at Phantom Limb (listen to their mix for Soundwave here). Hekla is known for her explorations into the depths of sound, blending influences from her Icelandic roots with experimental electronic sounds. Her album, Á, was breath taking, as is her more recent album, Xiuxiuejar, both of which I encourage you to experience.

In her mix for Soundwave, Hekla takes us on a journey through the themes of nature, spirituality, and human connection. Her selection of songs includes works by the Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, whose choral music draws on ancient folk traditions, as well as Ghédalia Tazartés’ haunting “Un amour si grand Qu’il Nie Son Objet” and Meredith Monk’s playful “Cow Song.” Hekla also includes a selection from the French composer Olivier Messiaen’s “O Sacrum Convivium,” which explores the theme of spiritual communion.

Excursions In Ambience Retrospective

Excursions In Ambience Retrospective

Welcome to Soundwave, where we dive deep into the experimental, electronic, and ambient soundscape.

Today’s episode takes us on a nostalgic journey with a retrospective mix of the groundbreaking Excursions in Ambience compilation series. These albums played a pivotal role in shaping the ambient music genre. From the first volume in 1993 to the final fourth installment in 1996, the Excursions in Ambience series explored the intersection of dance music and ambient sounds, capturing the essence of a musical movement that continues to influence artists today.

As a former deejay at WMFO 91.5 FM, these albums were a constant presence in my playlists, providing the perfect soundtrack to my late-night walks home after spinning records at the radio station.

We dedicate this week’s show to the memory of Michael Kandel, who made several appearances on the Excursions in Ambience series and passed away in 2015.

Sanderson Dear

Sanderson Dear

This week’s guest deejay is Sanderson Dear, the founder of Stasis Recordings.

I met Sanderson Dear through another exceptional guest deejay on this very podcast: Rubén Tamayo, and I have been grateful to him ever since.

Each track from Sanderson’s mix carries its distinct tone and texture, yet they all resonate with a shared melancholy and longing.

Sanderson has over a decade of experience pushing the boundaries of electronic music. His productions are like a carefully crafted time machine, transporting the listener to otherworldly realms of sound and sensation. At least, that’s what my experience is like.

If you enjoy today’s mix, as I’m sure you will, and want to hear more music from Stasis Recodings, you can look forward to an album from Glo Phase this Where We At…, the label’s third compilation, will be released this May. Don’t want to wait that long? SubDan’s 12” EP is fresh off the presses.

Jolanda Moletta

Jolanda Moletta

Today’s guest deejay is Jolanda Moletta.

I was first introduced to Jolanda through her captivating work in Peter van Cooten’s mix for Soundwave (listen here), and I've been hooked ever since. I invited Jolanda to share a mix with us.

Jolanda’s mix features artists whose works are marked by their unique approach to sound and a profound sense of introspection. It is a haunting and deeply introspective exploration of the mystical power of sound.

Hailing from Italy, Jolanda has been making waves with her unique blend of organic and electronic soundscapes, drawing inspiration from her love of nature and the cosmos. Her album, Full Moon Session, was just released earlier this month, which includes live performances of songs from her Nine Spells album.

Jolanda also led the folk band She Owl, delivering two full-length albums and performing more than 300 concerts across Europe and the US. But in the past two years of isolation, Jolanda focused on a deeply personal project, one that connects her to her ancestral roots and promotes healing.

Antti Tolivi

Antti Tolivi

Todays guest deejay is Antti Tolvi.

Antti Tolvi is a visionary musician hailing from Finland, who has been making waves in the underground music scene with his exploration of ambient and experimental soundscapes.

I was introduced to Antti Tolvi through his remarkable album, Spectral Organ / Feedback Gong, available from the always-reliable room40 label. And let me tell you, it was a revelation. His approach to music blendis elements of drone, ambient, and free improvisation to create a sound that is simultaneously intimate out of this world.

Antti’s mix for this episode includes three captivating tracks that perfectly capture his unique style. "in all the cold" by John Franek is a haunting piano piece that creates a sense of space and distance, while "nachtstück" by Eva-Maria Houben invites the listener to engage in a meditative reflection on their innermost thoughts and feelings. Finally, Taku Sugimoto's "Quintet (2017) - Berlin, 2017.08.06" uses silence and understatement to create a sense of vastness and infinite possibility.

All of these tracks share a common theme of introspection and self-reflection, evoking a sense of quiet contemplation that is perfect for those long winter nights.

Join us next week when out guest deejay will be Sanderson Dear.

Petter Lindhagen

Petter Lindhagen

Today’s guest deejay is Petter Lindhagen, AKA Tired Tape Machine.

I met Petter through his brother Jakob Lindhagen. After Jakob shared his mix on Soundwave I asked him who he thought should guest deejay on the show and he highly recommended Petter and I'm so glad he did. Jakob also mentioned that

Petter recently released an absolutely incredible album, Thing. The production is top-notch, with a perfect balance of nostalgia and modernity. Thing showcases a wide range of styles, from downtempo and IDM, to house, techno and experimental music, much like today’s show! Petter's mix has been the much needed kick in the ass to get my day started.

Petter has some words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Rhucle.

See you then.

This is a mix of music that inspired my latest album, Thing  (released March 2022), and also a couple of songs from that album. My earlier albums with TiredTape Machine were more about harmonies and atmosphere, but for the last few years, I’ve been more interested in beats, rhythm, and sampling.

I hope you enjoy it.

Enrico Coniglio

Enrico Coniglio

Today’s guest deejay is Enrico Coniglio.

I had the pleasure of meeting Enrico through Giulio Aldinucci, who also guest deejayed on Soundwave (listen to Giulio’s mix here). Enrico’s work combines beautiful and challenging sounds, and I’m excited to have him on the show today to share his unique perspective on music and sound.

Enrico's mix takes us on a journey through a diverse array of experimental and ambient music. It's a beautiful mix that evokes different emotions and landscapes and is a lovely way to start the new year.

Enrico is an environmental sound recordist and sound artist from Italy. His work has been featured by some of the most respected labels in the genre, such as Crónica, Gruen Rekorder, taâlem , and many more. He also runs the digital label Galaverna, with Leandro Pisano, Nicola Di Croce, and Vernalis, in collaborate with Krisis Publishing.

Enrico has some words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Petter Lindhagen.

See you then.

Here is a mix I made some time ago on a CD-R that has yet to be released on the internet anywhere. A selection of post-folk & ambient songs coming from the past, with a strong, wintery, and intimate vibe and some evanescent vocals here and there.

Joshua Bruner

Joshua Bruner

Today’s guest deejay is Joshua Bruner.

I had the good fortune of meeting Joshua through Nick Turner, AKA Tyresta, when I asked him who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave. Nick’s music and his mix for Soundwave are lovely. When Nick suggested Joshua, I was immediately on board.

I ask every guest deejay on Soundwave who would share a mix on the show. It’s a simple thing, but over the last few years, it has led to meeting some extremely talented people and turned me on to fantastic music that I am confident I would’ve never discovered on my own, let alone singular mixes curated by each guest deejay.

Joshua’s mix is yet another example. I don’t know any of the musicians he included in his playlist. That’s no slight to them. They’re all fantastic. There’s just too much music to listen to. Joshua has selected breathtaking tracks for his mix. I’m listening to it as I write this. His mix seamlessly blends with my night of rain pattering on my roof and the whoosh of jets flying to a nearby airport. It’s quite the experience, which is why I’m always asking who should guest deejay on Soundwave.

Joshua has some words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Enrico Coniglio.

See you then.

This episode will be released just a few days before my 43rd birthday! Sometime in January or February, I expect to release an album on vinyl in collaboration with Alyssa Miserendino, someone I would highly recommend for a future mix. I’m excited about this record because it includes field recordings she captured in South America with Gordon Hempton, aka The Sound Tracker. I used a brainwave sonification technique using an EEG to trigger selected samples from their recordings of a unique bird called the Oropendola.

  3. Klaus Wiese “Mystic Landscapes II”

Ian Wellman

Ian Wellman

Today’s guest deejay is Ian Wellman.

Ian is another fantastic musician I was introduced to through Yann Novak (listen to his mixes for Soundwave here and here). Every artist Yann has turned me on to has been outstanding. Oh, I’ll still listen to the releases of the musicians he recommends before inviting the person to guest deejay on Soundwave, but it’s perfunctory at this point. I know anyone Yann suggests is going worthwhile.

Take today’s mix.

Ian begins his playlists with a lovely tune by Cosmo Sheldrake. Wherever Ian is going to take me on this mix, I’m happy to be along for the ride. And it’s an emotional journey, full of meditations and reflections, not all of it gentle. Appropriate enough for the time of year.

Ian recently released Sedge, which he calls “a little tape of sandhill crane recordings,” available through Luminous Drift. I’m listening to the album as I write this. It’s quite nice and a great way to wind down this post.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Joshua Bruner.

See you then.

Benoît Pioulard

Benoît Pioulard

Today’s guest deejay is Thomas Meluch, AKA Benoît Pioulard.

Thomas’s music kept popping up on Soundwave mixes. It wasn’t until I asked Andrew Tasselmyer whom he knew, who might share a mix on the show, and he said Thomas that I understood the universe was trying to send me a message: get Thomas on Soundwave. At least, that’s how I interpret it.

Oh, and listen to Andrew’s mix here.

Thomas’s music is warm and intimate. I’m listening to the Communiqué album he recorded with Jogging House as I write this, and it’s perfect listening for a crisp winter night. I was curious to hear who’d include in his mix. When I saw Jason Corder’s offthesky project in his playlist, I knew I was in good hands. Whereas Thomas’s music is warm fire to rub your hands to, his mix feels like stepping out to a bracing day with magical side quests. Again, my subjective interpretation.

I’m glad I listened to the universe.

Speaking of Thomas’s music, he has a new vocal album called Eidetic coming out on Morr Music in March 2023. He also has a Bandcamp subscription with lots of exclusive music, and it is constantly evolving.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Ian Wellman.

Rubén Tamayo

Rubén Tamayo

Today’s guest deejay is Rubén A. Tamayo, founder of Facade Electronics and Fax Music.

I met Rubén through Yann Novak (listen to Yann’s mixes for Soundwave here and here). Yann’s a great guy with exquisite taste in music. Yann turned me on to Rosalía, who, according to Spotify, I listen to a lot. When I asked Yann who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave, he recommended Rubén. I spent an afternoon listing to music from Rubén’s label for form’s sake, but it was a foregone conclusion. I already knew I would have Rubén on the show solely based on Yann’s opinion. I was not wrong, as Rubén’s mix proves.

I can feel winter coming to San Diego. The mornings are just a little bit chillier. Rubén’s mix has been my companion for the last few weeks as I start my day. Supersadfish + Reptile’s “Daybreak” provides a nice jolt as I make a cup of coffee, review email and review my tasks for the day. Rubén’s mix has been the soundtrack for my mornings, and by the time we arrive at Subxet’s “Blastoise,” I’ve been on an epic sonic journey. It’s a great way to start the day. I highly recommend the experience.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Benoît Pioulard.

Glyn Bush

Glyn Bush

Today’s guest deejay is Glyn Bush.

Last month I shared a retrospective mix from the Ambient Dub compilation series. It was a fantastic experience revisiting those albums, which also served as a touchstone to some beautiful times. Inspired, I reached out to as many of the musicians on the compilation album as possible, leading me to Glyn, whom I’ve always known as one-half of Original Rockers.

Glyn’s mix re-introduced me to gems from Durutti Column and Faust and introduced me to new favorites such as Chassol and Khotin. And Glyn’s mix is chock full of his music projects, such as Biggabush.

Join us next weekend when our guest deejay will be Rubén Tamayo.

DJ Bulut

DJ Bulut

Today’s guest deejay is DJ Bulut.

I met Bulut well over a decade ago while producing Solipsistic Nation, my electronic music podcast. I was a fan of his New Turkish Beat podcast, and we started an acquaintanceship on Twitter.

I’ve been reflecting on that time for the last few days. It was during Solipsistic Nation that I enjoyed Twitter the most. The network was becoming large enough that I could strike up great conversations and meet interesting people but still small enough that things didn’t get lost in the noise. I still love Twitter, but I admit that the number of genuine interactions I’ve had in the last few years has dwindled.

As I write this, Twitter seems like it might crash and burn. Something will emerge out of the wreckage, but it might not be anything we recognize as Twitter. But maybe that’s okay. Perhaps Twitter has served its purpose. I’m glad I met people like Bulut while it was still vibrant.

Bulut has some words about his mix below.

Join us next weekend when out guest deejay will be Glyn Bush.

Sam Rosenthal

Sam Rosenthal

Today’s guest deejay is Sam Rosenthal.

I invited Sam to guest deejay on Soundwave because he is the founder of Projekt Records. I didn’t ask Sam because Projekt explores genres of music I love, such as ambient, darkwave, and goth, although that’s part of it. No, it’s because Sam has been running Projekt and releasing breathtaking music for nearly 40 years!

For a lot of us, Projekt has become an institution. It feels like it’s always been a part of our lives. Incredibly, I’ve been listening to music released by Projekt for nearly half my life. Sam’s Black Tape for a Blue Girl has always been a favorite. Steve Roach, of course, who makes an appearance on today’s mix. And I’ve been listening to Anji Bee and Ryan Lum’s Lovespirals for years. And so many compilation albums.

I fully expect Sam will be releasing more music from Projekt well into the middle of the 21st century. And Sam will be the house deejay at my funeral. Wow, that got dark. Sam, I hope you took that in the spirit that was intended.

Sam has some words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be DJ Bulut.

See you then.

I put together a mix of tracks selected from the 600+ electronic/ambient/drone albums released on Projekt over the last 39 years (founded in 1983!) Three are my collaborations with label artists; for the other four, rather than selecting “hits” I programmed deep tracks that I quite enjoy. With over 50 releases on Projekt in 2022 there is an abundance of wonderful music to chose from. My intention for Soundwave was to create an hour flow of the mood of Projekt — an exploration and overview for listeners discovering the label for the first time.

  1. Sam Rosenthal & Projekt Artists “the Alabaster reliquary of glittering ashes”
  2. Steve Roach “In the Eye of Noche Compressed”
  3. theAdelaidean & deepspace “Star Cradle”
