Football touches so many aspects of so many people around the world. It strengthens our connections with our friends and family, it divides cities and separates countries. It can both pull us out of and drive us into depression, and it can embody the best and worst of humanity.

Football can be a force for good. This week we spoke with FC Not Alone co-founder Matt Legg about his mental health, starting FC Not Alone and working to help young men better address and care for their mental health through football. Dave Champ deserves special thanks for helping to set this interview up.

Follow FC Not Alone on Instagram - Twitter - and visit their website (fcnotalone.com) to get the latest articles and to find out more about how to get involved. They have been supported by CALM since the beginning, which you can find on Twitter here. Their website is here.

Dave stayed on the line after Matt exited and we discussed the Burnley match for a short while You can follow Dave on Instagram here.

Lastly, I was joined by Stephen of St. Mary’s Statbase on Instagram to discuss the success and focus of the page, including interviewing members of the women’s team. We also discuss the Burnley match further.

It was an episode with a full range of emotions. Something we are all familiar with as Saints Fans.

Thanks for everything!

This week we are dipping back into the show archive to replay a conversation I had with Kiko Rodriguez back in the summer of 2017. Kiko, on Twitter @KikoRod9, is, among other things, a founding member of @DRNSport and JRod’s dad.

JRod isn’t the focus of the episode, though the links to Burnley and the upcoming match pair nicely. Kiko had struggled with his mental health for a period and he agreed to discuss it a little bit with me on the show. With so many people struggling with their mental health right now, including myself, I felt it was a good time to put it back in the feed. Hopefully, you find it uplifting and encouraging.

Also, a special thanks to Robbie @_SaintsinFrance for originally connecting Kiko and I and arranging for him to come on the show.

The cup success continues for Saints who made easy work of a poor Bournemouth side on Saturday afternoon. There wasn’t much Vitality from the hosts as Nathan Redmond ran riot and had it not been for a few VAR decisions (correct ones, we should note) Saints would have embarrassed the Championship side even more.

Saints will now take on Leicester City in their semi-final at Wembley in April, but Tom Leach of Hampshire Live and I did not know that at the time we recorded. Tom has been covering Saints for Hampshire Live this season and has put up a number of impressive articles and interviews. In addition to discussing Saints, we talk about his career, Journalism, and more. You can follow Tom on Twitter @TomLeachHL

Jake Huges gets up earlier for MMA than I do for Saints. The difference is, it’s not him getting punched in the face or kicked in the stomach when the action starts, which is what every match since January 4th has felt like, at least up until now.

Jake is always a pleasure to speak with and I hope you enjoy the little bit we actually put on the show. It’s a tough test for Saints midweek against Manchester City, but hopefully, we can take some momentum into the fixtures that follow.

I’ll be honest. We didn’t wait for the Everton match to record this week’s show. Partially it’s because of it being on a Monday night. Partially it’s because the things Chris Rann and I wanted to discuss don’t hinge on any ONE match- not even on the two matches where we lost a combined 18-0. So, it seemed like a good chance to just sit down and talk about Saints And that’s what we did.

Chris isn’t afraid to say what he thinks, which makes him a lot of fun to talk to. It was nice to get more than a tweet’s worth of info from him at a time, and I hope you enjoy the conversation. If you have comments, let us know. We are both pretty receptive and open-minded… And, for the record, we both want what’s best for the football club. Just like you do.

Saints made some changes this week. They changed formations, changed player positions, changed their recent run in the league (it no longer just has LLLLL) and so we changed up the matchday routine too.

This week I jumped on Mike Smales YouTube Channel to watch the match with him and Jack (You can get the channel here). It was a 4:30am kickoff for me, so I hadn’t even had a sip of coffee before kickoff. But, as I injected the caffeine, Taki injected some life into our performance and put us ahead. Chelsea leveled the score from the penalty spot, but overall it was a wonderful match to watch, especially with the company of Mike, Jack, and the people in the comments saying I look like Johnny Sins.

Anyway, getting to actually see and watch a match with other humans was great, even if it was via YouTube, and it was also a lot of fun to get to chat with Mike about the match afterward and give some praise to Minamino, Djenepo, Salisu, and Ralph.

As always, thanks for listening, and be sure to check out Mike and MAtchday Vlogs on YouTube and Social Media.. and when we are back in stadiums, seek him out to take part in the show!

The good news is there were no 9-0 losses this week. The Bad news… well, there’s still plenty. A KWP injury, a record 6th straight league loss for the club, a lack of response from the team, and VAR decisions (you know how those go these days). We can still smile about Stuart Armstrong, moving through in the cup, and I smiled when I spoke with this week’s guest Aydin Osman (on Twitter and Instagram @aydinosman96).

If you asked a P*mpey fan to plan a birthday week for a Southampton fan last week would have been it. Losses 4 and 5 in a row in the league, a 9-0 defeat with 9 men, and a 3-2 loss to a team with 9 men. Add to it lockdowns, torrential rains, and a job predicated on people being able to actually see you, and you have Tom Deacon.

Tom is a comedian, host, presenter, Instagram Chef, a coffee connoisseur, and this week’s guest. If you don’t already follow Tom on Instagram (@tomdeaconcomedy) or Twitter (@TomHDeacon) I suggest you do. For the Saints content and because there are times when you just want to smile and he’ll help.

Saints were rather predictable this week. A thin lineup, limited goals, more injuries, A deal sheet to get a transfer over the line, letting fullback (who Ralph doesn’t really truest) leave even though we don’t have cover, and us being snubbed in the transfer market for one reason or another. We’ve all been here before, but we keep coming back. If you keep coming back here, then thank you. I appreciate it!

Joining me this week to discuss Arsenal and Villa is Lucy Highett (on Twitter @lucyhighnett). Lucy is one of my favorite guests to have on (I’m probably not supposed to have those, but I do). She keeps me honest, challenges my thinking, and helps me out with FPL decisions when I’m stuck. I struggled to be as positive as normal this week, and I apologize for that. As I write this post-transfer window, I'm not sure exactly how to feel. But, I know I enjoyed making this episode, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Saints managed two wins in the FA Cup since the last episode was released. A Tuesday night victory over Shrewsbury and a Saturday afternoon win against Arsenal means a few things for Saints in the coming weeks. 5th round FA Cup Clash with Wolves is set for February 10th, the 5th of 6 matches in 3 weeks for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Saints have further injury concerns with KWP out of action for Tuesday as well. How Ralph manages the minutes over the next couple of weeks will be interesting, to say the least.

A depleted Saints squad failed to take anything from Leicester City on Saturday night. But we lost more than just points. With the schedule jammed, further injuries and suspensions mean Saints will look to bring youth into the mix in future matches. In addition to the Leicester City match, Saints released their 2020/2021 accounts and announced a new kit deal with Hummel. Joining me to discuss it all is OneFootball editor Blaise Bourgeois. It’s not everyday Saints knock off Liverpool in the League. In fact, it’s not even every year or every other. In fact, it hadn’t happened since a 3-2 come from behind win under Ronal Koeman’s watch. There were a number of reasons Saints should not have won on Monday night, but none of them matter. The squad depth, the injuries, illnesses, and other calamities that reduced the squad to what it was, Hasenhuttl’s record against Klopp. But, none of those mattered. Saints took 3 points from the defending champions and current league leaders, shooting themselves to 6th in the table, and putting in a performance that brought the big man to tears.

Joining me this week to discuss the match and address your questions is Prost International’s, Jacob Tanswell. Jacob is a longtime Saints fan and journalist and it was a real pleasure to have him on the show. Because of the Monday night fixture we spoke on two occasions. During part 1 we looked at listener questions and discuss the disappointing end to Saints 2020 calendar year, and in part 2 we look back at Saints 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Monday night.

Be sure to give Jacob a follow on Twitter @J_Tanswell and get his writing at Prost International.

The holiday period is a busy time for people in English football. Managing training, matches, family, and your personal mental and physical health becomes even more difficult when the schedule bunches up around the holidays. Dean Hammond knows that, and that’s why we recorded this episode over a month ago. Between his role analyzing Saints matches for the Final Whistle, running Dean Hammond Elite Fitness, raising his kids, being a husband, commentating, and staying in shape, Dean is beyond busy and Leon and I were blessed to be able to sit down with him for over an hour to discuss his career at Saints, lifting a trophy at Wembley, making it to the Premier League, goal setting, answering your questions and more.

A huge thank you also goes out to Will and Leon of Saints Archive. Their patience and passion really help episodes like this come together and it’s a pleasure to work with them!

If you’d like to follow Dean on social media you can do so using the links below, and make sure to check out deanhammondelitefitness.com for more information on how to use the platform to help get the best out of yourself!

With that said, I hope you enjoy the show. Please let us know who else you would like to hear from in the future, and, most importantly, thanks for listening!

Saints welcomed Manchester City to St. Mary’s for a 3:00pm kickoff on Saturday. Despite playing with City for 90+ minutes, losing Danny Ings in the first half, and pinning City back for portions of the match, the visitors left the south coast with all 3 points and Saints saw themselves fall to 7th in the table by the time the week’s matches concluded.

There is a balance between performances and points. Saints won ugly against Brighton, dispatched Sheffield United, let Arsenal off the hook, and went at City with everything Ralph would have expected. The result just didn’t come off. But, at least there’s still Christmas… oh, wait.

Jay Grant, the man behind @Southamptonpage and a partner of the show, joins this week’s show. We’ll discuss the City match and your questions, and consider the impact of Mike Dean and Oriol Romeu’s inevitable coming together, and look ahead briefly to Fulham.

Last week Saints won ugly. This week they welcomed fans back to St. Mary’s with a dominant, beautiful performance that made all of us smile at least a few times during the 90 minutes. It was an emotional day for many, including the manager himself, and although not everyone could be there, it obviously meant a lot to have fans back behind the team in person. If you were one of the lucky ones to be there in person, congratulations. The other 30,000 hope to join you soon, including Dan from Saints Brass, who joins the show this week. They were not allowed to join in at the stadium this week, and we discuss what the pandemic has been like for them and how football has gone as well. We’ll keep this pretty short and sweet. Saints did not play well on Monday night. The second half was better than the first, but neither was very impressive, especially going forward. But, we took 3 points from the AMEX and saw the return of the king. So, we can celebrate those and learn from the rest.

Matt Neuhausen, a Saints fan living in Florida, joins me this week to discuss the match and address your questions. Follow him on Twitter @neuhausenmatt and on Instagram @neuhausen_matt.

Saints lost to Manchester United at St. Mary’s after holding a 2-0 lead going into halftime. It was the first loss since Spurs torched Saints’ high backline for 5 goals in September, bringing an end to an undefeated run that stretched 7 matches (5 wins and 2 draws).

On the day it was disappointing to lose, given the halftime scoreline. But, on the balance of play, I don’t think it was totally unfair. United were better for much of the match, and Cavani’s movement gave our defense a tough time.

Still, there’s plenty to celebrate, including yet another JWP free-kick that was all but perfect and the fact that if VAR wasn’t ruining football we’d be in the top 5. Joining me to discuss the match and his newest project, Lawrie and The Boy’s of 76, is Michael Kurn. We’ll discuss his new documentary which looks back at the 1976 FA Cup Final, developments around the football, and, of course, the United match.

Saints managed a point away to Wolves, Theo got his goal, and Alex McCarthy saved almost everything. It’s a point to be proud of, and probably a fair result. With Thanksgiving just days away, I think I’ll just take the point.

Joining me this week is the host of Serie A Sitdown (Twitter, YouTube) and SchalkeMerica (Twitter, YouTube), Richard Kharman @r_kharman on Twitter and Instagram). Kharman is a longtime Saints fan, podcaster and writer, and is always a pleasure to talk to. Last time he was on the show we discussed hotel gate and Gabbiadini’s late winner at Swansea. This time, we talk the draw, fouls, Romeu, McCarthy and more.

I just want to start by saying thank you. To all of you. If you have been a guest, a listener, or a Patron, if you’ve asked a question, written a review, left a comment or shared the show over the past 200 weeks, thank you. When I started the show I never really thought about what it would be like getting to 50, 100, or 200 episodes. It’s been so many different things. I’d rather just keep my head down and move to 201, but the support for the show is a tad overwhelming. So, thank you. I’m proud of the show, not because I’m doing it, but because it’s a little spark of joy in my life and hopefully yours too, and because it’s brought me closer to so many of you and the football team we love. (Enough of this).

This week I’m joined by Dan James to discuss our respective streaks. 259 straight matches for him, 200 straight weeks for me. The highs, the lows, the ridiculous decisions, and our favorite memories. It’s a little more “down memory road” than normal, but it was a fun conversation to have. I hope you enjoy it. If you’d like to follow Dan you can do that @thedanjames on Twitter and Instagram.

A Southampton team missing its talisman and its veteran left-back put on a show on Friday night. The team completely swept Newcastle aside and did so in a way that Steve Bruce’s next detective mystery novel could be all about how a man from Austria came to England and slew all in his path.

Saints finished the night on top of the Premier League table and will spend the international break in a Champions League place. There’s still way too much of the season left for us to become fixated on table position, but we really are playing some impressive football, and, as Freddie says in the show, we need to enjoy it.

Southampton Football Club dismantled Aston Villa for the first 60 minutes of Sunday’s match at Villa Park scoring four beautiful goals and playing some fantastic football as well. The final 30 minutes were an absolute nightmare. From injuries to conceding 3 goals, 2 in stoppage time. However, Saints took the points and gave themselves a chance to go top of the table for at least 1 night with a win this Friday at home to Newcastle. Who knew we would be here after losing 0-9 just a year ago.

Joining me to discuss the match and the impact are the guys from the In That Number Podcast. You can get the In That Number Podcast each week wherever you listen to podcasts and you can get in touch with them on Twitter and Instagram. Their artwork is done by @saintsnewsnow.

We spoke directly after the match, so we knew less about the injuries than we do now. But, hopefully, you enjoy the show. Let us know what you think!

Saints knocked off Everton on Sunday afternoon, protecting Arsenal’s Invincibles for yet another year, and yet somehow failing to avoid the “they lost 0-9 a year ago. They’ve come a long way since then…” tropes from pundits and commentators alike. It was one of the best performances I can remember from a Saints team. From creating chances to defending set-pieces to controlling the game up by two goals and, eventually, with a man advantage. I expect Saints to press everyone we play, to disrupt the flow of the game, to put it maximal effort. But I didn’t expect Saints to show some other sides of the game. The team is growing, Ralph is molding them, and they are a lot of fun to watch.

Matt Beling joined me after the match this week to talk through the main points including both goals, the red card, and Nathan Redmond’s MOTM performance (I don’t know about that one, honestly). We also discuss Matt’s new podcast, the 3PL Podcast (Google Podcasts and Spotify), and, as always, you can follow Matt on Instagram @wearesouthampton for more great coverage of the team and fantastic edits and graphics.

Saints went to London and, with Chelsea, put on a show… for the 0 fans in attendance, the international audiences who watched for almost nothing, those in the pubs down the street from the stadium and around England, those who listened on the radio, and the few who decided to pay up the £14.95 to watch from home.

and the few who decided to pay up the £14.95 to watch from home.

It wasn’t a match you’d show your kids and say “go do that.” Especially if said kid is a defender or goalkeeper, but it was entertaining for most of the 90 minutes. Of course, it’s a bit sweeter given we scored the stoppage-time equalizer, but it was an extremely exciting point for Saints complete with debuts, returns, late goals, and more.

Joining me to discuss it all is Alex Hammond (on Twitter @alxhmnd21) who has spent time covering Eastleigh and other sporting events around England. Alex joined me some time ago after Abdoulaye Doucouré punched us all in the nether regions when he handled the ball into the goal to earn Watford a draw a few years back… (pre VAR).

This week I am proud to present the first-ever collaboration between the Saints Archive and this show, as we team up to continue the work they started with the Total Saints Podcast and bring you Total Recall. In our first edition of Total Recall, we spoke with former Saint Malcolm Waldron, who played his football for Saints in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before moving on and eventually being forced to retire due to a knee injury.

It’s always exciting to try something a little bit different, but the best part about doing this show (and part of the reason I started the podcast) is meeting, listening to, and learning from so many great people. Malcolm, Leon, and Will all deserve a lot of credit for this one, I just recorded it… and it’s an honor to have done so.

With that said, I hope you enjoy the show. Please let us know who else you would like to hear from in the future, and, most importantly, thanks for listening!

We’re all about positivity this week. The only negative is my COVID19 test results so there’s no need to quarantine, and with Saints getting a 2-0 win this weekend, there’s no need to socially distance myself from the result either.

Saints managed a fully competent performance on Sunday afternoon. Aside from a 15-minute spell to start the second half, Saints controlled the game in its entirety. They created chances, took 1 nicely, karate kicked another, and had a few more chances to add to the total. In the end, a fairly comfortable performance, albeit one that can still be improved on.

Joining me to discuss the match on this week’s show is Steve Forbes on Twitter (@forbesypresents) and Instagram (@forbesypresents). Steve is one of the matchday presenters at Southampton FC. He left the live pre-game show and the Final Whistle Podcast recording to come join me for this show, and for that I thank him. He went from sitting across from Kenzie Benalie and chatting with Joe Prince-Wright and Dean Hammond to looking at my bald, up-since-4:00am, bags under my eyes having self. He’s basically a Saint.

We talk about the match and a bunch of unrelated stuff, but I’ll take the blame for that. I had plenty of medicine before, during, and after the recording, so things got a little loopy. If you would like to listen to the Final Whistle Podcast put out by the club, you can do so on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Saints finally did it. There is no substitution for a win, under any circumstances. Do the dirty work off the ball, take your chance, put in the hard yards, and whatever other cliches you’d like to add in, because they add up to 3 points, on the road, at a place, and against a team, that’s been a nightmare for us in recent seasons.

Yes, Burnley were far from full-strength, and, no, they aren’t exactly having a nice time, but I don’t care. A goal for Ings, a win for Saints, and some hope that we finally may be starting to play a little bit of the football we saw at the end of last season (that is probably going too far, I know).

Joining me on this week’s show is the man behind St. Mary’s Musings and a lot of MMA content as well, Jake Hughes. Jake has a new podcast out called 3 F’s, all about Fifa, Football, and Football Manager. You can get it on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts (more links here).

Look at this photograph. It shows the final score to our match against Spurs, played at St. Mary’s last Sunday at noon. Saints were cut open by the Son/Kane combo as Hojberg and José Mourinho took all 3 points from the south coast in what was a second-half I would like to forget (and that I woke up at 4:00am to see).

We were all very excited about the start of the Premier League season. And with good reason. Ralph was here, we got KWP permanently, we hadn’t lost at Selhurst Park in several years, and with that, more than 98% of Saints fans who voted on the Athletic’s poll said they were optimistic about the start of the season. But, when the season kicked off Saints didn’t, and they failed to win again on opening day. But, it’s not all doom and gloom, and Tom Murray and I try to take some positives out of a disappointing day against the Eagles.

From JWP’s penalty spot groundskeeping in Reykjavík to shirt sponsors, TV deals, and transfers, Lucy and I discuss the ongoings, and the hopeful outgoings, of everything around the team. I also admit some pretty embarrassing things and insult Burnley midfielders (that one is for you, Dan), all because we were having a good time.

I always enjoy having Lucy on the show and I look forward to having her back on when the season gets underway. Also, I know there will be people who, after listening to this episode, say “you don’t know anything about this team either.” Fair play to all of you in advance. So much happened this week in the world of Saints, and most of it happened after we recorded this episode. But that’s fine because this week was never supposed to be about Saints. This week we’re focusing on the Southampton Women’s Football Club (Soton Women’s FC) and we’re joined by first-team coach Lee Hurrell and new signing Jodie Burchell.

Between the two of them, we walk through the end of last season, learning from hard times, moving, reaching for goals (and scoring them), and much more. They got their preseason underway in a friendly on Sunday, so be sure to check in with them on their new website and stay up-to-date with them on their push for promotion.

As always, get in touch with the club using the links below. The club and players rely on sponsorships to keep them on the field and their season would be impossible without them. You can also get in touch with Hayley for any media inquires. All links are below.

For the next two weeks (Ep. 185 and 186) we'll chat with several fans of the team and the show and get their thoughts and assessments on the season that just ended, and ask them what they think needs to happen in order to make sure we keep moving forward next year. I spoke with Luke Millard and Justin Woodward in the normal podcast recording space early last week before having to make the drive north to Washington state to deal with some family stuff. While I was there I had to delay a couple of recordings because we were busy, but I did manage to speak with Graham Copp and Tim Bisantz... I spoke to them from the passenger seat of the car. I have no regrets other than I wish the coffee shop would have been open before we started.

The 2019/2020 season is finally over. A lot of bad things we never imagined could happen actually happened. Liverpool won the league, we got beat 0-9 at home (in case you missed it) we’re in the middle of a world-wide pandemic, there are continued instances of racial injustice all around, and Total Saints Podcast called it quits. But, there are some positive signs as well. Saints had their best finish to a season in several years, the club look to be addressing issues in the squad already, Bournemouth are relegated, we beat them, P*mpey, and Brighton in their own backyards, took 18 points from the promoted teams over the course of the season and we have RALPH HASENHUTTL as our manager.

To help recap the Sheffield match and discuss the season I’m joined by Jake Hughes of St. Mary’s Musings. It’s always great to chat with Jake, even if he doesn’t like Oriol Romeu as much as some of us do. Then, after that, I’m joined by Zach Lowy to discuss Mohammed Salisu, who is rumored to have already signed but has yet to be announced by the club. I’m truly thankful to both of them for sharing their time, and you for listening. I look forward to speaking with them again, and I hope you enjoy the show!

Che Adams’ late strike put the nail in a Saints FC shaped nail in Bournemouth’s coffin, but the death blow came just moments earlier when VAR ruled out their late equalizer for offside.

Honestly, it wasn’t very pretty. Bournemouth were more direct than THAT overconfident guy in the bar around 1:45 am after 16 drinks. We didn’t really press Bournemouth in their own half, mostly because they sent it upfield as soon as they had it at their feet. Still, Danny Ings managed a goal (we’ll forget the saved penalty), Saints kept a clean sheet, made it 31 points on the road this season (second only to Liverpool), eclipsed Puel’s point total of 46, and have a chance to finish as high as 11th… and all that despite losing 0-9 to Leicester City in October. Can you believe it!

Joining me on the show this week to discuss the match and chat about the team and the season is Ben Stroud, author of a few horror stories and the Archers Road End blog, which I love and miss.

I wouldn’t say Saints surprised us in the last two matches, and they shouldn’t have surprised Manchester United on Monday night either. The gameplan was, at its core, the same. Press. Force Mistakes. Take Chances. Make them beat you. And, it worked. The hottest team in the Premier League since the Project Re-Start kicked off was forced to drop points for just the second time since football came back. Star players were held in check, pockets were picked, and Saints left with a well-deserved point after taking an early lead and then clawing back a late equalizer.

Joining me to discuss the match this week is Alex Hart (Twitter @hartgarfunkel), a US-based Saints fan that I met (virtually) after Carl Anka captured our shared love of Saints in THIS article in The Athletic. It was fantastic to get to chat with Alex and get his thoughts on how Saints have been playing in recent weeks, and assess what might happen going forward, in this season’s remaining fixtures and into next season.

Alex has also been a guest on the Total Saints Podcast (Ep. 70 and Ep. 106) where he shared his story of becoming a fan of the club in more detail that we go into here. So if you would like to know more about that side of the story, check out those episodes!

Saints managed to do what only *checks notes* 6 other teams had managed this season, beat Manchester City in the Premier League. We aren’t going to go full Bournemouth and start claiming a trophy for winning a football match- we’ll also defer the trophy for most viewed Premier League match- but we should take the time to recognize the victory and realize the impact a win over the defending Champions could have going forward. After all, it was Stuart Armstrong’s pressure that produced the Che Adams chance which, in case you missed it, he put away brilliantly.

Sure, we sat deeper and deeper as the match went on, and on most other days at least one or two of City’s shots deflect off of a defender and find their way into the net, or a cross finds the head of an attacker at the back post, but not this time. Saints managed to do it at home for only the 14th time in 3 years. And, in case you missed it, Che Adams scored his first Saints goal. It truly was a wonderful day.

To make it even better, Lucy Highnett (@lucyhighnett on Twitter) joins the show. We recorded on the final whistle, which means we’re both on a bit of a high. Hopefully it all makes sense… if you need to put yourself in the mindset before you listen, just watch this short video.

As always, thanks for listening and any feedback you have!

The football season is most definitely back. The rollercoaster ride that is following Saints is here, and we experienced it all this week. Our emotions followed the team up and down as Saints lost to Arsenal in disappointing fashion, keeping the home form intact, and then went on the road to HAND Watford a defeat and take all three points back to St. Mary’s.

Saints now sit on 40 points. Closer to 7th than 17th (though other teams have games to come later this week), and we can be relatively confident in how the team responded to the performance against Arsenal.

This week I am joined by two guests, Chris Hutchings spoke with me on Friday morning to relive Arsenal and talk about the experience of being in the ground when then doors are closed and seeing Premier League football without a crowd. We also discuss the match, which wasn’t that great. Luckily, Chris is. You can follow him on Twitter @HutchFM.

I then caught up with Jay Grant who runs the partner page of the show, the Southampton Page, on Twitter and Instagram. We had the pleasure of reliving the win at Watford, the performance of some of the rotated players, and we also discussed what we expect to see against City. We recorded on the final whistle and were, understandably, excited. At least we finished on a high!

Ep. 179- Slow (re)Start, Strong Finish, with Bene Holley of The Saints FC Blog

A three-month layoff might have been just what Danny Ings and company needed as Saints began Project Restart with an emphatic 0-3 win at Carrow Road. Southampton began slowly but grew into the game, and from the first hydration break on it was all Saints.

Joining me this week to recap the match, the team selection, the performances, and address your questions is Bene Holley, a Saints fan from Italy who also blogs about the club and helps run the Saints World Twitter account. Bene has a connection to Southampton and I really enjoyed getting to hear his thoughts on the match, getting to know him a bit, and learning more about his blog and writing. So, since we recorded this week’s show a lot has happened. Ralph’s due to sign a new contract extension and project restart is inching ever closer to bringing football back to us. In larger news, We saw demonstrations by players in the Bundesliga, and protests have gone on for days around the US, with things turning violent in several instances.

Steve Forbes, matchday presenter at Southampton FC, joins me this week. We discuss, among other things, his journey to the job, what it looks like, how he went from selling mobile phones and working in call centers to quarreling with Sammy and taking charge of the halftime relay, while still making time to cook, present the news, and entertain us all while he’s doing it.

*This week’s notes: Jay, who runs the Southampton Page on Twitter, and who is the official partner of the show, was due to be on this week. We had the recording time set pretty late and then he got ill. I’ve been meaning to find a way to get this episode back out, and now seems like the perfect time, especially since Jay was the one who set it up in the first place.

----more----

It’s not very often that most of us get to speak to former professionals. Some are public figures in broadcasting or coaching, some move on to other careers, and some slip away from the crowds and make a life for themselves with their families. Those that are public often seem, at least to me, unreachable. You can see them, you may even say hello, but to actually sit down and have a chat is not something most of us will get the chance to do.

John, of the Saints FC Podcast, has managed to track down several former pros for the podcast, and I truly enjoy those episodes because I learn so much about the team and the players of the time, a time before I began following the red and white stripes, before I began singing “Oh When the Saints” at 4:00am most Saturdays before I began calling it football. For that reason, I feel especially honored to have had the chance to speak with former Saints and Finland goalkeeper Antti Niemi. If you have been a fan of Saints since the early 2000s then you will know Antti. The blonde-haired shot-stopper is a fan favorite remembered for his cat-like reflexes and acrobatic saves in goal.

But, prior to doing this interview with him, I didn’t really know him at all. So, in the very short time between learning about the opportunity and actually speaking with him, I enjoyed learning about him and his career, watching highlight videos, and reading up on other interviews he had done. My hope is that the interview is slightly different than what he would have been asked elsewhere. I didn’t want to do the same old interview, but I hope the interview I did is enjoyed by whoever listens. There are so many other people out there probably better suited to do this interview, but I am grateful for the chance to speak to such a thoughtful, talented, kind and hardworking person.

Antti is still active in football. In addition to coaching for Finland he likes to spend time fishing and with his family.

He is on Instagram @anttimniemi.

Special thanks to Jamie Grant for setting this interview up. Thanks also to Lee Calendar and Michael Kurn for helping with some of the question ideas.

We also discuss the likelihood of Hojbjerg leaving, what that means for the team, Project Restart, football without fans, and more. More than anything, it was just a fantastic opportunity to spend some time learning about Chris and his connection with the club. I’m finding more and more during this COVID19 break that the people who support and work around the club, and their stories, are, at least to me, more interesting, rewarding, and engaging than complaining about a misplaced pass or Cedric’s lack of back-post defending. I hope you enjoy the show. You can get in touch with Chris to talk football, stats, or anything else, @hutchfm on Twitter.

For the last few weeks, it’s been a mixture of confusion and uncertainty, and even with the PL’s announcement of potentially resuming on June 1st, it’s still largely that way. Until we know more, we’ll just stay alert.

This week we’re avoiding most of that and diving into trips to the Dell, Ferry rides, keeping up with Saints from abroad before the internet was a thing, cup finals won and lost, and more with Graham Copp. Graham is a lifelong Saints fan from the Isle of Wight and who now lives near Washington DC. He’s written for the Ugly Inside and seen Saints up and down England and in the US. It was a real pleasure to be able to chat with him about his memories of the team, and just reflect and reminisce on some of the moments he’s enjoyed (and some of those he didn’t) for a while.

I hope you enjoy the chat. If you’d like to get in touch with Graham just send me a message and I’ll forward it on to him.
