Carpool | Wk 4

In an era with total access to information, a seemingly endless supply of resources and copious amounts of entertainment, we still manage to find ourselves lonelier than ever. It’s not that we aren’t around people, just that we choose to go it alone. But it doesn’t have to be this way, and it’s not the way Jesus intended for us to live. Rather than being a one-man show, we’re invited to be in a band. Rather than an individual sport, we’re invited to be on a team. Rather than a solo commute, we’re invited to join the carpool. Join us this March as we explore the life of connection and meaning that we were designed for.

The Opposite of Spoiled | Wk 4

Everybody thinks about money. We all want to have nice things but hate the idea of being materialistic.

We hate the thought of raising spoiled brats even more. But how do you avoid it? People say money can’t buy happiness, but that doesn’t stop us from trying. Most Americans are up to their eyeballs in debt, live paycheck-to-paycheck, and are overwhelmed with financial stress. Even those who make a lot aren’t often wise with what they’ve got. Why is that? There are certain key conversations everyone ought to have about money growing up. But most of us didn’t. Because most families don’t talk about money. What if someone could clue you in on the conversations you missed (without any condescension)? What if you could start making money decisions based on what you value instead of what’s advertised to you? And what if you could teach your kids to do the same? We think you can. And we’re going to show you how.

A new year represents a clean slate. We think about where we are, where we want to be,and everything we should probably add to our already overcrowded schedule in order to get there. But...what if the life you want isn’t about adding anything, but learning what & how to subtract?

Christmastime is here! It a season of joy, generosity, and traditions. But just like in our favorite holiday movies, Christmas is not without its threats. This December we’ll be taking a look at the villains of the original Christmas story, and how they might still be working to keep you from experiencing the wonder of Christmas today.

I Can Quit Anytime Wk 4

Any innocent activity can unexpectedly devolve into a full-on addiction. Something we CHOOSE TO DO out of enjoyment mutates into something we HAVE TO DO out of compulsion--your morning coffee, checking your notifications, a sugary afternoon snack, a glass of wine before bed. Now we can't not do it. We're moody and unpleasant when forced to go without it. But lots of people do it. It's not like it's going to ruin your life. And besides, you can quit whenever you want to. Or can you?

Now we can't not do it. We're moody and unpleasant when forced to go without it. We started planning our days around it. We'll ignore friends and family to get access to it. We'll blow off work deadlines to indulge in it. It's a small thing but it's become a big part of our life. Initially, it helped us feel more in control, but now it almost feels like it's in control. Other people have started to notice. A couple have said things, but they're overreacting. It's not that big of a deal. Lots of people do it. It's not like it's going to ruin your life. And besides, you can quit whenever you want to. Or can you?

Family Month | Wk 5

We all want to be happy. We design our lives around it. We want to have fun, be carefree, and enjoy our day to day. And obviously, we want the same thing for our family. Few things make us sadder than seeing those we love unhappy. But sometimes they are. Happiness is a hard state to sustain. Expectations go unmet, preferences clash, and feelings get hurt. What then? Do we ignore it, try and fix it, change the subject, force everyone into alignment? If someone in my family is unhappy, what’s my responsibility? Isn’t making each other happy the whole point of family? If not, then what is?

Tiny Golden Statutes - Wk 4

We all have certain things we care about more than others. Everyone's got their own goals, dreams, interests, and obsessions. But we each tend to value whatever makes us feel valuable. The catch is--most of us have had moments where we finally got our hands on whatever invisible trophy we'd been angling for and realized it just wasn't worth the journey. The GOOD THING we'd been obsessed with became a BAD THING because it stole focus from a BETTER THING. Which is devastating. So, how do you prevent a lesser pursuit from becoming your top priority? What would it look like to organize your life around the pursuit of a more fulfilling set of trophies? What would those even be? What might it look like to truly adopt God's priorities?

If there is a thoughtful Creator who designed the world to work a certain way, most of us would want to know what it is. We’ve all known or seen people do all kinds of things because “God told them to.” But did He? Does God actually speak? If so, what’s He saying? And does He talk to regular people? Because the world is a really noisy place, so how would you even hear Him if He did? These are great questions. Join us during the month of July for honest, thoughtful conversations as we tackle it all together.

We all know stories or have seen documentaries about people who claim to have heard from God. Most of them weren’t just convinced God wanted them to know something, but DO something, and the ‘somethings’ are all over the place—adopt a baby, launch a non-profit, fight an addiction, pass a law, start a commune, or bomb a building. Most of us have our fair share of suspicion. Did God really tell these people to do these things? That can’t be true. But I guess it’s possible he said something to some of them. After all, the bible has stories about people hearing from God. How do you know if something is from God or not?

Four Short Words - Week 4

Four Short Words - Week 4

Knowing where you came from brings into focus who you really are and how you got that way. Our culture is interested in this, maybe more than ever. When we meet people, we impulsively ask them where they’re from. We love movies that revolve around the origin story of a character. We map our family trees. We ship our spit off to companies to tell us the ancestry of our genetic code. When you open the Bible, the beginning of Scripture is about how we began. It’s our origin story. But maybe not in the way you might think. What does this ancient piece of poetry that opens the story of us and God tell us about the bigger picture of who we are and what we’re made for?

Rules of Resilience | Wk 4

When there’s something we can’t seem to make ourselves do or stick to, we assume it’s because we lack inspiration. We go on the hunt for an uplifting story, an encouraging word, or motivational quote to get us going. But all of us have things we feel inspired to do but never quite get around to. Is it that we don’t want it bad enough, aren’t focused, or don’t quite see its significance? But some of what we’d argue is most important, we still can’t seem to prioritize. So, what’s the problem? Is it that we need more or different inspiration? Is that we need a better, more compelling “why”? Or is there another ingredient we might be missing? What are successful people not telling us? Is there a magic recipe for resilience? If so, what is it?
