77 – The Lost History of Worker Sports and the American Left w/ Dr. James Robinson
We are joined by historian Dr. James Robinson to discuss the parallel histories of the worker sports movement and socialism. At one time, there were millions of socialists across Europe and the US. Worker/People Olympics were bigger than the actual Olympics. The generation before the Baby Boomers are portrayed as simple country folk rather than as they were, politically aware immigrants who helped start most of our unions. Rather than boycotting the 1936 Olympics in Berlin (or disallowing Nazi Germany from hosting), the IOC along with most countries including the US participated in what is now known as the Nazi Olympics. But the US participation is portrayed as a protest when there was an actual protest Olympics scheduled that was not only going to be bigger but more diverse (which included Jewish exiles from fascism). It was the socialists who fought the fascists before the war, whose warning to the US about Nazis fell on deaf ears, who were wiped out along with the Jewish people for being anti-fascist and/or also Jewish.  But revisionist history has led many Americans to believe World War II was fought against the socialists, not the fascists. The sports we enjoy now and their often socialistic nature traces back to actual socialists. Our worker rights trace back to socialists. A lot of anti-racist actions in the US involved socialists. Even with the current anti-racist protests, rather than disparaging the protests, who were the first to join the protests? It was NOT white liberal Democrats. The raised fist you see now was started by the Industrial Workers of the World. How much of our history that not only represents a whole period but also the lived experiences of millions of people is not being taught even in "liberal" circles? This is why you should listen to this episode and share it.  We can't continue to produce important episodes like this one without your solidarity. Sam recently received a message from Brittany Wong, a senior reporter at Huffpost asking him to give his thoughts on the “roof Korean” memes showing armed Koreans on rooftops. FS 66 – Queer Self-Defense and UFC 250 w/ Jacky
We talk with martial arts trainer Jacky about their queer self-defense project that offers free self-defense and MMA classes to the queer and trans community. We also discuss how Brazilian jiu-jitsu is similar to but also different from such activities as parkour and skateboarding. We also dive into the challenges and benefits of starting your own training collective as a novice. Lastly, we discuss the main card of UFC 250.  The queer perspective on MMA is one that is nonexistent in the discourse, which is why you need to listen to this episode. 70 – The Politics of Empathy, Knowledge, and Responsibility w/ Jeff Monson
In this dense episode, we speak with MMA pioneer, grappling legend, and political radical Jeff 'The Snowman' Monson. Unlike what you might expect, Jeff's politics didn't come from reading theory but rather as a direct result from his accomplishments in wrestling and combat sports, as well as his years in social work. He was like many Americans, in a bubble. Through his work and especially through his travels as a competitor, he saw the suffering of marginalized people that he was previously unaware of. This broke him down emotionally and spiritually. But knowing what you know now, do you pretend nothing has changed or do you accept what you saw and the responsibility that comes with it? A lot of that depends on how much empathy you have. Radical politics is just empathy, knowledge, and responsibility.  We can't continue to produce important episodes like this one without your solidarity. 65 – History of Eugenics & Fascism in Health, Wellness, and Music w/ Antonio Valladares
Do the activities that are supposed to make you feel better always make you feel like crap? We talk to Antonio Valladares about the not-so-subtle, not-so-hidden world of white supremacy, eugenics, and fascism in the world of health, wellness, music, art, and alternative & spiritual lifestyles that no one seems to care about. It's the elephant in the room that isn't addressed because it's embedded into a trillion-dollar industry, but that's exactly why we must address it. If you're at all interested in health, wellness, punk rock, or just curious why the New Right doesn't seem conservative, listen to this episode.  And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. It gets episodes like this one to more listeners. 57 – Everything You Wanted to Know About Marxism but Were Too Afraid to Ask w/ Dr. Paul Raekstad
If you think we can't rely on the moral sense of our oppressors not to oppress us, you might already be a Marxist. Marxism is ultimately about systems rather than only about the individuals. When something bad happens, rather than only thinking "what's wrong with this individual" but also asking "what's wrong with this system? What's enabling these individuals? How do we change the system to prevent more of this from happening," you're working your way through the same questions Marxism asks. Then learning more about Marxism can help refine some of your thinking and fill in some gaps. Dr. Paul Raekstad received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Cambridge. Currently he's a lecturer in political theory at the University of Edinburgh. He focuses his work on human development, freedom and democracy, the future of economic institutions, and prefigurative politics. He has a book out called “Prefigurative Politics: Building Tomorrow Today.” He's also one of the creators of the Red Plateaus YouTube channel. And if you love the show, tell your friends. 49 – Conspiracy Theories, Pseudosciences, God, Empire, & Privilege w/ Christian Perez
This week, Sam chats with Christian Perez. Christian is an adjunct professor of political science at Brookdale Community College and often lectures on the dangers of conspiracy theories. He's also the host of the Modernity and Absurdity podcast. Things Discussed - The dangers of even seemingly benign conspiracy theories and the harm of pseudoscience & alternative health (as gateways and toxic environments). - How conspiratorial thinking always comes with contradictory beliefs, such as conspiracists believing Princess Diana was killed by the royal family while simultaneously believing she's still alive. - How Christians are one of the oldest conspiracists—because why isn't everyone Christian when the son of God came down to Earth and "His Word" now exists in the world? In particular, why haven't the Jewish people converted to Christianity when they've known about Jesus the longest? How come Christians have traveled the world and have been able to convert everyone else except the Jewish people? And what about Muslims, why won't they convert? Thus conspiracies and contradictory thinking. - How racism and contradictory thinking allows conspiracists to see the atrocities that have happened to minority groups—from being locked in cages, tortured, experimented on, enslaved, and even genocide, then fear it'll happen to them but then simultaneously deny it ever happening to the minority groups. Fight Study 49 – Depression, Division Change, and Fighting for Identity
Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Renan Barao are fighting to survive because fighting is all they know how to do. Whether brain health, mental health, struggling to make weight, or struggling with depression, fighting isn't just something they do, it defines who they are. And that's a problem that doesn't end with the bell. If you want to start fighting, there are unlimited resources out there and people who want to help you get started. But when it's time to get out, that's when everyone disappears and no one wants to help you. And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. Tell them they're missing out. Sam talks to meditation teacher and philosopher Alex Ferguson about how living through the New Zealand earthquakes brought him to mindfulness and how the mosque shootings brought up new questions from his students—like what do we do about Nazis. And throughout the episode we explore how mindfulness doesn't always make you a better person, sometimes it can make you a bigger jerk, a mindful douche, a self-help grifter. 37 – It's All Process: Lasting Success in Competitive Martial Arts & Screenwriting w/ Brian Herskowitz
Sam sits down with veteran screenwriter and lifelong competitive martial artist Brian Herskowitz on how he applies his concepts from competitive martial arts to lasting success as a storyteller, keys to competing for over 50 years, maintaining your body, applying the same mindset to everything, upgrades in regenerative medicine (prolotherapy, PRP, stem cells), giving yourself as a writer and martial artist room to play, how "do what I say and not as I do" can make sense when there's free play, how the belt system was a late addition to martial arts, and allowing the student to define their own success. You can't be a dictator to other people's wants and goals, and you can't allow others to dictate your wants and goals as well. What you want to get out of anything, you get to decide. We sit down with comic book writer Aubrey Sitterson to talk about his new comic book "No One Left to Fight" which is a riff on Dragon Ball Z, with the premise of: what do you do when you've already won? Then we go into the weeds about the genre of fight mangas, and if there is an audience for that here in the US, how mangas and American comic books are different, and the process of becoming a comic book writer. Then we dive into his other notable work "The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling" and the challenges of writing a historical non-fiction graphic novel, the importance of visuals for a visual art form, why we like to watch people fight, the strange juxtaposition of liking this stuff while being a Leftist, and also what makes something a "work"? Is it just that the result is predetermined or is it more than that? 34 – Our Most Southpaw Episode Ever: Iron Mike Tyson, Anime, Comic Books, and More w/ Modern Martial Artist & Vloshry
We bring back David Christian of the Modern Martial Artist YouTube channel and Emon Rashid (Vloshry) to talk about their new graphic novel "Mortal Weapons," which is basically a martial artist and fight fan's wet dream. It's about the techniques and concepts that David covers in his YouTube videos, taught through an epic story, with the art of martial arts artist Emon Rashid. Then we break down what made Mike Tyson such an impressive first round knockout artist. And of course we end up talking about anime, manga, comics, and crying during movies. Where else can you hear the technical boxing side of Mike Tyson while also talking about anime and X-Men, other than on Southpaw? And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. FS 34 – A Tale of Two Southpaws: Manny Pacquiao and Leon Edwards (or MMA as Post-Modern Martial Art)
This is fight study, where we use professional fights to study the science and art of fighting. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills. On this episode, since there were two different combat sports events (boxing and MMA), Sam compares two different types of southpaws from two different sports: Manny Pacquiao from boxing, and Leon Edwards from MMA. Edwards being the taller longer fighter, and Pacquiao being the smaller fighter. And in doing so, we can better understand how size plays a major role in deciding your strategy. Then Sam uses some of the UFC undercard fights to analyze feinting and leading. And since combat sports, especially MMA can be so complex because it has so many elements involved, you can't really wrap your mind around it unless you apply some rigorous academic thinking: like critical theory, comparative literature, deconstruction, and post-modernism. 32 – The Practical Guide to Fitness w/ Chris Bathke
We speak with trainer, fitness writer, and gym owner Chris Bathke to go over three different training scenarios: a young athlete looking to improve their athleticism, a middle-aged person looking to lose weight and get fit, and an older person (or a person coming off of injury) looking to reclaim their strength. From there we branch off into various other situations that commonly arise. And by using three broad topics, we were able to cover a lot of ground. Today we sit down with historian, author, and podcaster David Parsons of the Nostalgia Trap podcast to cover a variety of topics that are rarely discussed in-depth: from the nostalgia trap of Ken Burns documentaries, anti-capitalism, the Vietnam War, loneliness and the search for community, Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky as gateway to psychedelics and Terence McKenna, reactionary hippies, and then the often most ignored part of the Left—Left physical culture. Things such as sports, working out, and MMA, and how that can not only function as a way to maintain mental health and community for activists, but also work as a natural bridge to talk about labor and teamwork with sports fans. 28 – Politics of Avengers and Other Comic Book Movies w/ Matthew Rozsa
Comic book movies are inherently political. When it's about a global catastrophe, that's political. When you world-build, that's political. When you have characters so powerful they can own the world, that's political. Whether the writers intend to or not, comic book movies are political thought experiments. And that's why they're such wonderful teaching tools for politics, especially for those who think they're only interested in the entertainment aspect. For this topic, we brought on political writer and movie reviewer Matthew Rozsa to discuss the politics within the "Avengers" as well as other comic book movies. Matthew Rozsa holds an MA in History from Rutgers University-Newark and is ABD in his PhD program in History at Lehigh University. His work has appeared in Salon, Mic, Quartz, and MSNBC. Salon articles mentioned The politics of "Avengers: Endgame": Thanos, Iron Man and the Malthusian extreme The powerful politics of Killmonger We can't be Captain America: "Civil War" never considers the possibility of President Trump Captain America's freedom fail: How the powerful few justify answering only to themselves Peak superhero? 26 – Daniele Bolelli and Southpaw Explain Everything PLUS American Plains Tribes
We initially met up with historian and philosopher Daniele Bolelli to discuss the Lakota people and other Plains tribes, but naturally our conversation expanded into modern individualism, practical intellect, disdain for variety, narrative thinking & bad mental health, happiness, community, what constitutes a tribe, nationalism, conservative post-modern utopian thinking, morality & religion expressed through politics, lose-lose situations (screwing over the world and still being unhappy), living on autopilot, lazy thinking, centrism, sh*tposting, social media toxicity creating addiction, Taoism & thinking in percentages (Bayesian reasoning), game theory, absolute thinking IS dogma (even when you think splitting it down the middle is always the right answer), the mixed mental arts of mixed martial arts, podcasts & continued education, and then more about American Plains tribes. It's a long podcast but we sincerely feel like not one second was wasted. Like many of you, we at Southpaw have wondered, how would someone like Jack Allison react to Joe Rogan Experience questions? Joe Rogan is famous for bringing on interesting personalities from Twitter, yet so far—no Jack Allison. Bonus Preview: A People's History of the United States (Pt. 3 of 3)
How would history read if it wasn't from the grand narrative of those in power, but just as it happened? Including all the warts. And since there are so many books that highlight the grand narrative, then we don't need a repeat of what we already know. What we might then need to balance out all that we think we already know is a book that highlights all the warts. And that's exactly what "A People's History of the United States" (https://amzn.to/2RcWRiQ) by Howard Zinn sets out to do. This is why any list of books to cover for the Big Ideas series would have to include this book. It's that important. There are people who have read this book and those who have not, and based on that difference, you have a different world-view. And that's the point of big ideas. FS 13 – Jon Jones & USADA: Making an Unfair Playing Field
Have you been confused by the whole Jon Jones steroids controversy and the UFC changing venue for him? So were we. And in trying to get to the bottom of this, we see that it's not just about Jon Jones but really about how the UFC treats fighters. We previously used Chris Weidman in the previous episode (24 – Is the UFC Killing Fighters like Chris Weidman?) as one example of how fighters are treated. Jon Jones is another example. The point of USADA was to make the UFC fairer for fighters. Or so we thought. But in reality, it was a ploy to make UFC more marketable to potential buyers. Same with the Reebok uniform deal. None of this was done for the benefit of fighters. Bellator and ONE has no USADA, yet their reputation amongst fighters is much better. Why?We put a lot of work into this episode, so if you'd like to support Southpaw, please become our sponsor on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/southpawpod

FS 12 – Is the UFC Killing Fighters like Chris Weidman?
*Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/southpawpodBreaking down the career of Chris Weidman, and answering: Was he hype, a has-been, or a victim of the system? And really, it's all three. He came in at the right time to beat Anderson Silva. His style matched up just right to do what Dan Henderson, Travis Lutter, and Chael Sonnen almost did but couldn't, which was to dethrone the king. But what happens after a lifetime of weight cuts? Several last minute UFC fights where you pass out and almost die to make weight, where there is not the ideal weight division for you, where you only know how to over-train, where you have to fight five five-minute rounds for title fights and non-title main events? Where you can't be on replacement therapy for low testosterone and you can't rehydrate through IV? Where your best years might already be behind you before you ever step into the Octagon? This is the story of Chris Weidman, someone who had the potential to be greater than Anderson Silva, but never lived up to it. However, this is also the story of many fighters who may have never achieved the same heights as Chris Weidman. And how the whole system of UFC MMA does not look out for the health of their fighters, but instead, for mega-fights at the cost of fighters' longterm careers.

12 – Sex Trafficking in India, Broken Education, and Martial Arts Life Skills w/ Mary Stevens
This is probably our most serious and important episode as we discuss Fair Fight with martial arts instructor Mary Stevens. Fair Fight is an organization that empowers and educates vulnerable girls in India, many of whom have been rescued from child prostitution. We also discuss the broken educational system in the US and UK. Then Mary explains to us what she considers to be a well-rounded martial artist—not only someone who can defend themselves, but also someone who works hard at school, has knowledge of law, first aid, nutrition & health, survival skills, teaching skills, and empathy. Much of martial arts centers around the individual but a true martial artist should be committed to society. Then we get into Mary's upcoming martial arts children's books (rather than martial arts tournament based Lord of the Flies, it's about working together as a group). If you'd like to support some of these causes or get more information, here are some helpful links:actandhelp.orgfairfight.nlRead Mary's project blog here: fairfightvaranasi.wordpress.comYou can find more about Mary and her karate school at schoolofmartialarts.com

FS 8 – Martial Art Tactics and Philosophy (Plus Fury vs. Wilder) w/ The Modern Martial Artist
In this episode, we're joined by David Christian of The Modern Martial Artist YouTube channel. We have a long and winding discussion into his background, how he makes such scientific combat sport breakdowns, what MMA could learn from traditional martial arts, using film school for YouTube, making YouTube a career... but this isn't an interview. We bring on guests to discuss topics, to look at the crap beneath the crap. So with David, we dig into the evolution of MMA, the fundamentals of footwork, how street fighting does, in fact, have unwritten rules, game theory in MMA, and some of the all-time greats in boxing. I mean, what better thing could you be listening to?You can find David on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1MHbPo9A_TcNH0fZ7ezARwAnd also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MMArtist1And if you haven't already done so, please spread the word and tell your friends who are nuts about all the same topics we are.

Fight Study 7 – Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz III
So it seems obvious why Tito Ortiz beat Chuck Liddell, right? That's the obvious crap. But we look at the crap beneath the crap. Why did Tito this time look so much taller than Chuck? Can Chuck's style hang in modern MMA? How much has Tito improved? Why didn't Chuck change his style or fight more defensively? Why was he wearing old shorts for a website that no longer exists? This fight is really a time capsule, how much MMA striking has evolved and how one fighter not only aged, but how his style has aged, while the other guy is like that less talented but consistent guy at the gym who eventually starts to surpass the more talented fighters who don't work as hard. And we also discuss BJ Penn, another fighter who's talent has run out, but never picked up the slack with work ethic.

9 – Early MMA vs. Teaching High School w/ Albert Rios
We sit down with former MMA fighter (Bellator & Affliction) Albert Rios and discuss the early days of MMA (before it was legal). We discuss how the original pioneers went into it with no promises of a future or a career, and how a lot of them were just street fighters. Then we discuss what training was like before super camps and all the BJJ and kickboxing schools became widespread, how fighters made ends meet, knowing when to retire, and how Albert had a backup plan with school and became a teacher. From there, we transition to the difficulties of teaching inner city students, and how in many ways it's mentally tougher than MMA. And how many of these kids have it worse than the hardest training Albert went through, and the real life faces of kids crossing the border to escape violence. It ain't just statistics, it's real kids.

Our very first guest! Jonathan Cooke from the Screen Verdict podcast. Then Jonathan uses MMA to explain what makes Zack Snyder good, what makes him bad, and what Batgirl would be like if Wes Anderson directed it. Sam explains how he lost friends because he didn't think Black Panther and Wonder Woman were all that good, and how Suicide Squad might be one of the worst movies he's ever seen. (Plus the M. Fight Study 6 – UFC 25th Anniversary Show
What happens when you put two fighters who are all offense and no defense? An epic fight. And that's what happened with Korean Zombie in the main event against Yair Rodriguez. And also Donald Cerrone fought Mike Perry, which looked a lot like an early Royce Gracie fight. We dissect what fighters need to work on between fights, how important is having the right camp, and the importance of timing in an MMA career. Also, Ben Askren in the UFC!

5 – Politicians and Their MMA Doppelgangers
On this episode, Paul takes the lead as he gives us his dissertation on how certain politicians are very similar to MMA fighters, or maybe it's the other way, certain MMA fighters are similar to certain politicians. We also delve into the differences between training to fight and violence. Hopefully, this dissertation will be good enough for Paul to get into grad school...

FS 4 – What If MMA: No Gloves PLUS Headbutts Pt. 2
What would modern MMA look like if we took away the gloves and brought back the headbutts? We make a great case why the headbutt becomes the great equalizer, especially for shorter fighters. And gives wrestlers one more tool for striking. It's a much bigger change than just taking away the gloves. It gives one more limb for attack. It changes the clinch, the takedown, it adds one more range of striking, and so much more.Listen to episode 7 to hear the first part where we talk about what modern MMA would look like if we took away the gloves.

FS 3 – What If MMA: No Gloves Pt. 1
Sam and Paul break down every detail of what modern MMA would look like if we took away the gloves. And you might be surprised at some of our conclusions. First of all, no, it wouldn't change that quickly. The current batch of fighters would mostly fight the same. Just as we saw with later generation of MMA fighters maximizing the rules and the first generation just fought the only way they knew how. Change happens in generation. But what would footwork look like if you couldn't use jabs and hooks to build your movement? What about eye pokes? Not only is the chin you were born with a big factor, but also your skin. Cuts will become a bigger factor. Then thin-skinned fighters will not fair as well.Change, whether in MMA or in the world, takes generations. And unfortunately, it happens by previous generations dying off and the next generation knowing better (it took several generations for the majority of Americans to adopt seatbelts).

4 – How to Think about Politics
The Southpaw Guide to Thinking about Politics:As a martial artist, as a principled person, as an honorable person, how should I think about politics? How politics should be downstream from your principles and not the other way aroundYour moral compass should not be skewed by politics, it should be your moral compass informing your politicsThe price of never thinking about your principles or forming them before indoctrinationHow principles aren't always ethicalUtilitarian ethics vs. nonconsequentialist ethics vs. virtue ethicsThe Right vs. the Portlandia Right (Internet New Right)The Leftists vs. DemocratsHow we sometimes pick identities that cut off our nose to spite the face (following people who want "Mad Max" when YOU want a utopia)How outliers fall into tribesHow your individuality should not conform to your tribe—if you want a tribe, you should find one that agrees with your principles as an individualHow to be flexible with your politics but inflexible with your principlesRetcon (retroactive continuity) to avoid hypocrisy and to form unholy alliancesHow to prioritize as a single-issue voterThe philosophy of Stone Cold Steve Austin

Fight Study 1 – UFC 229
There's some legitimately serious breakdowns in here, with some insights you won't find anywhere else. And mixed-martial-artsed in are some not-so-serious commentary, analogies to video games, pro wrestling, and anime. We're the Slavoj Zizeks of MMA. And oh yea, Derrick "The Black Beast" Lewis makes a funny.

2 – They Live, We Sleep, Love Naps, Stay Woke
S & P go meta again, as they discuss this iconic fight scene from They Live, and how it's an allegory for the allegory of the cave. And if that wasn't enough, how pro-wrestling predicted everything, how fake fights look more real than real fights, how combat sports and wrestling made us turn to the left, and how thinking about the multiple layers of fighting made us better thinkers. Also universal basic income vs. welfare capitalism, and what John Nada (Roddy Piper) would prefer. Though all this sounds random, they're all just mental strikes coming off the centerline of They Live.
