Anti-Capitalism, Nostalgia Traps, Swoletariats, Psychedelics, Team Sports, and MMA w/ David Parsons
Today we sit down with historian, author, and podcaster David Parsons of the Nostalgia Trap podcast to cover a variety of topics that are rarely discussed in-depth: from the nostalgia trap of Ken Burns documentaries, anti-capitalism, the Vietnam War, loneliness and the search for community, Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky as gateway to psychedelics and Terence McKenna, reactionary hippies, and then the often most ignored part of the Left—Left physical culture. Things such as sports, working out, and MMA, and how that can not only function as a way to maintain mental health and community for activists, but also work as a natural bridge to talk about labor and teamwork with sports fans. And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. Tell them they're missing out. Also, rate and review us. Be detailed, and tell us about yourself and how you heard of us. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills. We analyze MacDonald vs. Gracie and the limitations of being a Gracie, Machida vs. Sonnen and the importance of making adjustments, Tyson Fury vs. Tom Schwarz and the complexity of fighting a southpaw, and finally, what went wrong with Aaron Pico's MMA career? The Politics of Avengers and Other Comic Book Movies w/ Matthew Rozsa
Comic book movies are inherently political. When it's about a global catastrophe, that's political. When you world-build, that's political. When you have characters so powerful they can own the world, that's political. Whether the writers intend to or not, comic book movies are political thought experiments. And that's why they're such wonderful teaching tools for politics, especially for those who think they're only interested in the entertainment aspect. For this topic, we brought on political writer and movie reviewer Matthew Rozsa to discuss the politics within the "Avengers" as well as other comic book movies. Matthew Rozsa holds an MA in History from Rutgers University-Newark and is ABD in his PhD program in History at Lehigh University. His work has appeared in Salon, Mic, Quartz, and MSNBC. Salon articles mentioned The politics of "Avengers: Endgame": Thanos, Iron Man and the Malthusian extreme The powerful politics of Killmonger We can't be Captain America: "Civil War" never considers the possibility of President Trump Captain America's freedom fail: How the powerful few justify answering only to themselves Peak superhero? Not even close: How one movie genre became the guiding myth of neoliberalism And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. Tell them they're missing out. Also, rate and review us. Fight Study: UFC 238
This is fight study, where we use professional fights to study the science and art of fighting. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills. There really is no one else out there who does what we do at the level at which we do it. Meta, meta, meta. The MMA gods blessed up with a ridiculously stacked card for this episode. We study Henry Cejudo vs. Marlon Moraes, Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Eye, and Tony Ferguson vs. Donald Cerrone. And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz Jr: A True Underdog Story
Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. was real life Rocky. Just as Apollo Creed gave an unknown Rocky Balboa a title shot when he had no one left to fight, Anthony Joshua decided to fight Andy Ruiz Jr. when his opponent fell out. And Ruiz, like Rocky, made the most of his opportunity and shocked the world... And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. Tell them they're missing out. Also, rate and review us. Fight Study: Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Smith
This is fight study, where we use professional fights to study the science and art of fighting. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills. There really is no one else out there who does what we do at the level at which we do it. Meta, meta, meta. In this episode, we discuss what happens when a tall lanky range fighter like Anthony Smith fights an even taller lankier range fighter in Alexander Gustafsson. And a lot of that depends on whether you fight to your strengths or not. And also, bad habits are hard to break. Especially if you're heart's not in it, then you coast on autopilot. And that can be dangerous during scrambles. And if you love the show, tell your friends. Spread the word. Tell them they're missing out. Also, rate and review us. Anderson Silva's Coach on Optimal Training for Combat Sports w/ Dr. Jason Park
Dr. Jason Park is a one man MMA coaching staff. He's not only a coach to Anderson Silva, but he's also a doctor of physical therapy, a strength and conditioning coach, as well as the head of the US Muaythai Federation (USMF) medical team. And it's because of this breadth of knowledge that we were able to chat with him in studio for nearly two hours. What we ultimately wanted to do was to create an audio FAQ on everything you basically need to know about training for combat sports, and I think we delivered. Hope you enjoy the episode. Fight Study: Dos Anjos vs. Lee & Wilder v Breazeale
This is fight study, where we use professional fights to study the science and art of fighting. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills. There really is no one else out there who does what we do at the level at which we do it. Meta, meta, meta. In this episode, we use Rafael dos Anjos vs. Kevin Lee to dissect a battle between a southpaw pressure fighter vs. an orthodox pressure fighter, who are equal in height, but not equal in reach and strength. Then we look at Deontay Wilder vs. Dominic Breazeale, to see what Wilder did with his reach, and how he uses variety and awkwardness to make his attacks hard to read and predict. UFC 237 Fight Study: Namajunas vs. Andrade
This is fight study, where we use professional fights to breakdown the science and art of fighting. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills. There really is no one else out there who does what we do at the level at which we do it. Meta, meta, meta. In this episode, we use Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade to dissect the match up of taller counter striker/ submission specialist vs. short and powerful in-fighter/ wrestler. Then we look at Anderson Silva vs. Jared Cannonier to study the southpaw counter striker vs. shorter power striker/ wrestler. And finally we look at José Aldo vs Alexander Volkanovski to breakdown two fighters with similar height and reach, where one tends to stand taller and use a Thai-boxing counter style vs. a more modern MMA approach. Bolelli and Southpaw Explain Everything PLUS American Plains Tribes w/ Daniele Bolelli
We initially met up with historian and philosopher Daniele Bolelli to discuss the Lakota people and other Plains tribes, but naturally our conversation expanded into modern individualism, practical intellect, disdain for variety, narrative thinking & bad mental health, happiness, community, what constitutes a tribe, nationalism, conservative post-modern utopian thinking, morality & religion expressed through politics, lose-lose situations (screwing over the world and still being unhappy), living on autopilot, lazy thinking, centrism, sh*tposting, social media toxicity creating addiction, Taoism & thinking in percentages (Bayesian reasoning), game theory, absolute thinking IS dogma (even when you think splitting it down the middle is always the right answer), the mixed mental arts of mixed martial arts, podcasts & continued education, and then more about American Plains tribes. It's a long podcast but we sincerely feel like not one second was wasted. And though we veered into nearly everything, we believe what we ended up recording will go down in podcasting history as pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good. Bonus Preview: A People's History of the United States (Pt. 3 of 3)
How would history read if it wasn't from the grand narrative of those in power, but just as it happened? Including all the warts. And since there are so many books that highlight the grand narrative, then we don't need a repeat of what we already know. What we might then need to balance out all that we think we already know is a book that highlights all the warts. And that's exactly what "A People's History of the United States" (https://amzn.to/2RcWRiQ) by Howard Zinn sets out to do. This is why any list of books to cover for the Big Ideas series would have to include this book. It's that important. There are people who have read this book and those who have not, and based on that difference, you have a different world-view. And that's the point of big ideas. Jon Jones & USADA: Making an Unfair Playing Field
Have you been confused by the whole Jon Jones steroids controversy and the UFC changing venue for him? So were we. And in trying to get to the bottom of this, we see that it's not just about Jon Jones but really about how the UFC treats fighters. We previously used Chris Weidman in the previous episode (24 – Is the UFC Killing Fighters like Chris Weidman?) as one example of how fighters are treated. Jon Jones is another example. The point of USADA was to make the UFC fairer for fighters. Or so we thought. But in reality, it was a ploy to make UFC more marketable to potential buyers. Same with the Reebok uniform deal. None of this was done for the benefit of fighters. Bellator and ONE has no USADA, yet their reputation amongst fighters is much better. Why?We put a lot of work into this episode, so if you'd like to support Southpaw, please become our sponsor on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/southpawpod

Is the UFC Killing Fighters like Chris Weidman?
*Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/southpawpodBreaking down the career of Chris Weidman, and answering: Was he hype, a has-been, or a victim of the system? And really, it's all three. He came in at the right time to beat Anderson Silva. His style matched up just right to do what Dan Henderson, Travis Lutter, and Chael Sonnen almost did but couldn't, which was to dethrone the king. But what happens after a lifetime of weight cuts? Several last minute UFC fights where you pass out and almost die to make weight, where there is not the ideal weight division for you, where you only know how to over-train, where you have to fight five five-minute rounds for title fights and non-title main events? Where you can't be on replacement therapy for low testosterone and you can't rehydrate through IV? Where your best years might already be behind you before you ever step into the Octagon? This is the story of Chris Weidman, someone who had the potential to be greater than Anderson Silva, but never lived up to it. However, this is also the story of many fighters who may have never achieved the same heights as Chris Weidman. And how the whole system of UFC MMA does not look out for the health of their fighters, but instead, for mega-fights at the cost of fighters' longterm careers.

Sex Trafficking in India, Broken Education, and Martial Arts Life Skills w/ Mary Stevens
This is probably our most serious and important episode as we discuss Fair Fight with martial arts instructor Mary Stevens. Fair Fight is an organization that empowers and educates vulnerable girls in India, many of whom have been rescued from child prostitution. We also discuss the broken educational system in the US and UK. Then Mary explains to us what she considers to be a well-rounded martial artist—not only someone who can defend themselves, but also someone who works hard at school, has knowledge of law, first aid, nutrition & health, survival skills, teaching skills, and empathy. Much of martial arts centers around the individual but a true martial artist should be committed to society. Then we get into Mary's upcoming martial arts children's books (rather than martial arts tournament based Lord of the Flies, it's about working together as a group). If you'd like to support some of these causes or get more information, here are some helpful links:actandhelp.orgfairfight.nlRead Mary's project blog here: fairfightvaranasi.wordpress.comYou can find more about Mary and her karate school at schoolofmartialarts.com

The first round was amazing. Then you saw striking clinics from Valentina Shevchenko over Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and Max Holloway over Brian Ortega. This is an episode for hardcore MMA fans.

Martial Art Tactics and Philosophy (Plus Fury vs. Wilder) w/ The Modern Martial Artist
In this episode, we're joined by David Christian of The Modern Martial Artist YouTube channel. We have a long and winding discussion into his background, how he makes such scientific combat sport breakdowns, what MMA could learn from traditional martial arts, using film school for YouTube, making YouTube a career... but this isn't an interview. We bring on guests to discuss topics, to look at the crap beneath the crap. So with David, we dig into the evolution of MMA, the fundamentals of footwork, how street fighting does, in fact, have unwritten rules, game theory in MMA, and some of the all-time greats in boxing. I mean, what better thing could you be listening to?You can find David on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1MHbPo9A_TcNH0fZ7ezARwAnd also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MMArtist1And if you haven't already done so, please spread the word and tell your friends who are nuts about all the same topics we are.

Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz III Poststructuralist Show
So it seems obvious why Tito Ortiz beat Chuck Liddell, right? That's the obvious crap. But we look at the crap beneath the crap. Why did Tito this time look so much taller than Chuck? Can Chuck's style hang in modern MMA? How much has Tito improved? Why didn't Chuck change his style or fight more defensively? Why was he wearing old shorts for a website that no longer exists? This fight is really a time capsule, how much MMA striking has evolved and how one fighter not only aged, but how his style has aged, while the other guy is like that less talented but consistent guy at the gym who eventually starts to surpass the more talented fighters who don't work as hard. And we also discuss BJ Penn, another fighter who's talent has run out, but never picked up the slack with work ethic.

Early MMA vs. Teaching High School w/ Albert Rios
We sit down with former MMA fighter (Bellator & Affliction) Albert Rios and discuss the early days of MMA (before it was legal). We discuss how the original pioneers went into it with no promises of a future or a career, and how a lot of them were just street fighters. Then we discuss what training was like before super camps and all the BJJ and kickboxing schools became widespread, how fighters made ends meet, knowing when to retire, and how Albert had a backup plan with school and became a teacher. From there, we transition to the difficulties of teaching inner city students, and how in many ways it's mentally tougher than MMA. And how many of these kids have it worse than the hardest training Albert went through, and the real life faces of kids crossing the border to escape violence. It ain't just statistics, it's real kids.

He's also attached to Wedding Crashers 2, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Jetsons. Then Jonathan uses MMA to explain what makes Zack Snyder good, what makes him bad, and what Batgirl would be like if Wes Anderson directed it. Sam explains how he lost friends because he didn't think Black Panther and Wonder Woman were all that good, and how Suicide Squad might be one of the worst movies he's ever seen. (Plus the M. What If MMA: No Gloves PLUS Headbutts Pt. 2
What would modern MMA look like if we took away the gloves and brought back the headbutts? We make a great case why the headbutt becomes the great equalizer, especially for shorter fighters. And gives wrestlers one more tool for striking. It's a much bigger change than just taking away the gloves. It gives one more limb for attack. It changes the clinch, the takedown, it adds one more range of striking, and so much more.Listen to episode 7 to hear the first part where we talk about what modern MMA would look like if we took away the gloves.

What If MMA: No Gloves Pt. 1
Sam and Paul break down every detail of what modern MMA would look like if we took away the gloves. And you might be surprised at some of our conclusions. First of all, no, it wouldn't change that quickly. The current batch of fighters would mostly fight the same. Just as we saw with later generation of MMA fighters maximizing the rules and the first generation just fought the only way they knew how. Change happens in generation. But what would footwork look like if you couldn't use jabs and hooks to build your movement? What about eye pokes? Not only is the chin you were born with a big factor, but also your skin. Cuts will become a bigger factor. Then thin-skinned fighters will not fair as well.Change, whether in MMA or in the world, takes generations. And unfortunately, it happens by previous generations dying off and the next generation knowing better (it took several generations for the majority of Americans to adopt seatbelts).

S & P go meta again, as they discuss this iconic fight scene from They Live, and how it's an allegory for the allegory of the cave. And if that wasn't enough, how pro-wrestling predicted everything, how fake fights look more real than real fights, how combat sports and wrestling made us turn to the left, and how thinking about the multiple layers of fighting made us better thinkers. Also universal basic income vs. welfare capitalism, and what John Nada (Roddy Piper) would prefer.
