The recent changes to Instagram have the small business community in an uproar. Many have had conversations about leaving the platform for good, while others have done what I believe is the best solution: Making peace with the platform.

You see, I think that Instagram is experiencing an identity crisis. The platform has gone from a Creator First Channel to Distribution First Channel and right back again. Now Instagram is trying to find its way back to being creator-oriented without leaving everyone behind.

My advice to you, give the platform time to finish making some adjustments, but always maintain your marketing diversified.

In this week's episode, I share with you my experience with Square and why their decision to put our agency in a Reserve Account status was unjustifiable. I also share with my thoughts on why I agree that some businesses are more liable for this type of action, others (like our agency) do a very good job of protecting ourselves against customer disputes and customer chargebacks. Still, the decision by Square, to put reserves on our account for what they considered a "rainy day," is unmerited.

As the owner of SoVerve Marketing Group, it is my job and duty to ensure we have reserves to cover our "rainy days." It shouldn't be up to our payment processing system to determine this - who by the way, is already receiving a hefty percentage per transaction. Still, if you are someone who experiences a lot of chargebacks or customer disputes, I encourage you to chat with an attorney to determine the best course of action to protect your business against what I consider "online shoplifting."

With the New Year comes big goals and typically one of those goals is client retention strategies (which we've covered in other episodes like this one). However, a shift has taken place in recent years as more and more competitors enter an arena that it is no longer about "being good enough" ย but rather also about truly going above and beyond.

So, what happens when we do that for a client and they simply don't reciprocate that? Do we keep them onboarding or do we cut them loose? If everything goes both ways, we can suggest that yes, it should just be a monetary exchange for the client. Meaning, they can refer our business and be more open to collaborating with their team rather than dictate to them. Where is the balance and how do we determine the best course of action?
