We watch the 1997 Hayao Miyazaki classic, Princess Mononoke and tackle the question of "Can anime reach universal acclaim?" Mononoke tells the story of a young Emishi prince named Ashitaka, and his involvement in a struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources. The film is known for its heartfelt story, beautiful showcase of human folly, and its influence on filmmakers and fans alike. It is one of the highest grossing Japanese films of all time and a major cornerstone of solidifying anime's reputation in the West. Friends From Film School Podcast - EP 64: Akira - The Cult Anime Classic

This week we continue the journey into the weird and wonderful world of Anime. Ellis has been taken on the duty to teach Luke & Brad about the intricacies of Japanese animation and ultimately try to win them over as "Anime fans." This week, we take a look at where America's modern anime obsession started, the 1988 cult classic, Akira. This Katsuhiro Otomo directed film tells the complex story of Kaneda, a bike gang leader, and his psychic, superpowered friend Tetsuo who has fallen victim to a secret government project. The pair faces-off against anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo's supernatural powers suddenly manifest causing a final battle between him and Kaneda in the Tokyo Olympiad. In this episode, we enlist our good friend, actor Ryan Littmann, to share his thoughts on anime and if this 33 year old movie still holds up. Time to take to the streets of Neo-Tokyo and figure out if Akira is worth the acclaim.

We're back after another long hiatus, aka Ellis' COVID quarantine to discuss the biggest film event of 2021 so far. Not familiar with Justice League, and the Snyder Cut story? After a family tragedy, Zack Snyder stepped away from the project in 2017 and it was retooled for a shorter, quippier version helmed by Avengers director Joss Whedon. After the original films box-office failure, rumors of a much longer and more serious Zack Snyder cut of the movie spread and through social media hashtags and public outcry from fans and the movie's cast, HBO Max finally re-teamed with Snyder to release Justice League in its original intended glory. The friends are tasked with answering this question: Does Snyder's unsupervised edit reign supereme or did the suits at Warner Bros make the right call in bringing in Whedon to course correct the project? This week, we continue to journey through George Miller's post-apocalyptic filmography and discuss the 1985 film, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Starring Mel Gilbson as the titular "Mad" Max Rockatansky and Tina Turner as Auntie Entity, "Beyond Thunderdome" follows Max as he drifts into an evil town ruled by Turner. There he becomes a gladiator and gets dumped in the desert where he is rescued by a band of feral orphans who have been looking for help for years. When several of them take his appearance as a sign and go off into the desert, he follows them back to the town. Four men enter, one opinion leaves. Directed by George Miller and starring a now superstar Mel Gibson, this sequel follows Max as he drives the post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. But the plot ultimately is Max falling into an encampment, scheming to steal their oil, but then becoming the group's reluctant defender against the hulking Humungus and his ruthless marauders.
