Is This the End of the World As We Know It? (The AI Episode)
Welcome back to Space Camp folks! Today, co-hosts, Kyle and Torsten, go back to their bread and butter: technology, philosophy, and ethics. They discuss how the “Godfather of AI” (Dr. Geoffrey Hinton) left Google and warns of the dangers of AI. AI has the power for massive disinformation campaigns in the wrong hands, it could put millions of jobs at risk, and might ultimately be the beginning of the end for human civilization. You’re in luck though, although on the surface, Kyle and Torsten come off as complete idiots, they actually might have solved the problem for the technological demise of humanity in today’s episode.

The Gulag Archipelago
In today’s episode, we are joined by guest Ryan Reese to discuss the Nobel Prize winning literature piece, The Gulag Archipelago Vol. 1, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Excerpts from the book are required reading in Russia as a direct challenge to Soviet era ideology. The book sold tens of millions of copies world wide and continues to be a powerful literary-historical record of the prison and labor camps that opened in 1917 under Vladimir Lenin and vastly expanded under Joseph Stalin’s reign from 1924 to 1953. We discuss highlights from the book, ethical dilemmas, modern events of how these conditions appear to be repeating themselves, and how to conduct oneself to prevent these atrocities from reoccurring.
On Death
Hello friends, In the traditional Space Camp fashion, we have not released anything in many moons. We are back with the warm and fuzzy discussion of assisting in one’s ultimate demise. Imagine being completely physically incapacitated by some debilitating disease while maintaining a sound mind (e.g. Stephen Hawking with ALS), would it warrant bringing your life to an expedited end? Now let’s flip the scenario and think about Robin Williams being merely cognitively impaired with Lewy Body Dementia. Does your opinion change? We discuss this dilemma with our friend and seasoned medical professional, Jeff, along with some stoic and theological underpinnings.
Our philosophical base from Seneca eliciting the conversation:
“I shall not lay violent hands upon myself just because I am in pain; for death under such circumstances is defeat. But if I find out that the pain must always be endured, I shall depart, not because of the pain but because it will be a hindrance to me as regards all my reasons for a living. He who dies just because he is in pain is a weakling, a coward; but he who lives merely to brave out this pain, is a fool.“

Industrial Society and Its Future - Finale
Hello Friends,
Today’s podcast digs into the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber. Considered a prodigy early on, many anticipated a bountiful future. He went on to attend Harvard at 16 years of age followed by becoming a mathematics professor. What led this promising individual to become one of the most infamous domestic terrorists? Join us for the discussion.
