Ep.10 How Japan’s new defense strategy will impact Asia? | Dr. Satoru Nagao

In this episode, we take a deeper look at Japan's new defense strategy, the country's role in Indo-Pacific security, as well as its rising importance in the international security domain with Dr. Satoru Nagao.


Dr. Satoru Nagao is a fellow (non-resident) at Hudson Institute, based in Tokyo, Japan. From December 2017 through November 2020, he was a visiting fellow at Hudson Institute, based in Washington, DC.

Dr. Nagao's primary research area is US-Japan-India security cooperation. He was awarded his PhD by Gakushuin University in 2011 for his thesis, "India's Military Strategy," the first such research thesis on this topic in Japan. Gakushuin University is a premier institution from which members of the Japanese Imperial Family have also graduated.

Dr. Nagao holds numerous other research positions, including director at the International Security Industry Council, senior research fellow at the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies, specially-appointed research fellow at the Japan Forum on International Relations, research fellow at the Institute for Future Engineering (strategy, defense policy), lecturer at Gakushuin University, an associate at the Society of Security and Diplomatic Policy Studies, research fellow at the Security and Strategy Research Institute for Japan, senior fellow at the Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka, senior research fellow of the Indian Military Review, and visiting fellow (Indo-Pacific) and honorary convenor at the Japan of Tillotoma Foundation in India.

Dr. Nagao was a visiting scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in Washington DC. He worked previously as a research fellow at the Tokyo Foundation and the Ocean Policy Research Foundation in Tokyo, as a post-doctoral fellow at the Research Institute for Oriental Cultures at Gakushuin University, and as a lecturer at Gakushuin University, Aoyama-Gakuin University and Komazawa University. He was also a security analyst at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and a first lieutenant of the Japan Ground Self Defense Forces (Japanese Army).

Dr. Nagao has authored numerous books and articles on security issues, and he also contributes to the column, "Age of Japan-India 'Alliance'" at Nikkei Business, the journal of one of Japan’s leading newspapers. He can be reached on: Hudson Institute and LinkedIn.

He has translated from the French An Impossible Dream: Reagan, Gorbachev, and a World Without the Bomb. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and a member of the Century Association, Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard Club of New York, National Press Club; president-emeritus of the Overseas Press Club of America and The Silurians.

Dr. Sameer Patil is a Senior Fellow at Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Mumbai. His work focuses on the intersection of technology and national security, including cybersecurity. He also researches India’s national security priorities, counter-terrorism, and regional security.

Dr. Patil is the author of Securing India in the Cyber Era (Routledge, 2022) and has co-edited Moving Forward EU-India Relations: The Significance of the Security Dialogues (Edizioni Nuova Cultura, 2017). He has a Ph.D. and MPhil in international politics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Dr. Patil has participated in several Track 1 and Track 1.5 dialogues, including India-US and India-UK Strategic Intelligence Dialogues, after the 2008 Mumbai attacks and India-UK Track 1.5 Cyber Dialogues. In 2019, he received the prestigious Canberra Fellowship, awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia. His work and views have been cited by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera, CNBC, Associated Press, and other news agencies. Colonel (Retd.) Ralph Thiele brings 25 years of experience in top German and international political-military leadership and policy assignments. In his military career Colonel Thiele commanded troops; developed concepts and capability requirements in the German Ministry of Defence; drafted policy papers and speeches for Federal Presidents, Ministers of Defence, Major NATO Commanders and Service Chiefs. As Commander Bundeswehr Transformation Command Thiele shaped the Bundeswehr's path towards network-enabled capabilities.

In his honorary and business functions, Thiele advises governments and industry on Defence Innovation and Disruptive Technologies in times of digital transformation. He has directed and contributed to numerous European Defence and Security Studies. Cooperation partners include CSIS, Washing- ton; Hybrid Centre of Excellence, Helsinki; Keio University, Tokyo; National Defense University, Seoul; RAND, Washington. Thiele has chaired conferences and accepted speaking engagements on most continents. He has published widely, most recently the book “Hybrid Warfare.
