Spin the Wheel Podcast #13 - Tandy Houghton - Eastbourne's Comedy Writing Supremo

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?

I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.  So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #13 is with Tandy Houghton - who is a Comedy performer and writer and Podcaster (No - Vodcaster!) from Eastbourne via Colombia and a bunch of other places too!  She is such a lovely and constructive person who has been very helpful as part of the Super God Comedy Squad to me personally writing various bits and honing them. She tells amazing ridiculous stories like hanging around near the Asylum and the time her Mum did terribly with her homework...

Spin the Wheel Podcast #12 - Jesse Quin - Keane Bass Player

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.
So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #12 is with Jesse Quin - who is someone you've probably not heard of...but you'll know the band. He's a member of Keane with hits like "Somewhere Only We Know" "Everybody's Changing" "This Is The Last Time" and so so many others! As part of a band who have sold over 13 million albums worldwide I thought the best thing to do was to ask him what his favourite Roast was?!

He is a great guy and a lovely feller to chat to. Jesse and I spoke for ages and so the editing process was rather long!! We talked about what he's been upto during lockdown, where he'd like to go back to, where he goes to relax, and his preferred washing processes!!

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?
I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.  So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #11 is with Ian Peskett - someone you've probably never heard of, but someone who is incredibly talented, incredibly genuine, and with a life story of renewal and recovery which he is very open about sharing both in his standup routines and also in this podcast!
He is an excellent comedy writer as anyone who has seen his stand up gigs will attest to, and he puts his jokes across with a focus and assured delivery which has left me creased up laughing more times than I'd care to remember.

We talk about his admiration for American comedy legend Doug Stanhope, his lack of transport, his travels down south and the reasons behind them as well as trying to understand his fondness for Happy Hardcore music!

Spin the Wheel Podcast #10 - Sam Serrano - Liverpool's Rising Young Comedy Star!

Spin the Wheel Podcast #10 - Sam Serrano - Liverpool's Rising Young Comedy Star!

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?

I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.
So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #10 is with a young man who I have watched lots online, and gigged with just the once, but despite his young age he's an absolute rockstar - Sam Serrano. Sam has already been gigging for 7/8 years but is only just 21! He is a gender fluid comedian who uses his upbringing and its trials and tribulations along with a razor sharp wit to kill stages up and down the country.

Sam is a wonderful young man who alongside his comedy is training to become a teacher (which you would never guess if you saw him perform!!) and tells stories of his life chasing gigs, chasing his idols, and chasing diabetes by the looks of things! We had a lovely chat and he's such an engaging and lovely guy with a real ambition to become a role model for others like he was as a young lad. If you like his stuff - he's deffo worth finding on YouTube because his blogs are brilliant!!

Spin The Wheel Podcast #09 - Ben Mark Smith - Notts Acoustic Troubadour

Spin The Wheel Podcast #09 - Ben Mark Smith - Notts Acoustic Troubadour

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.

So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #09 is with a young man who seems older than he actually is! Ben Mark Smith has been a regular on the Nottingham Open Mic and gig scene for the past few years and plays great acoustic songs which crowds have gotten used to singing along with. He's a lovely guy and a good promoter too, putting on shows in and around Nottingham as well as being one of the organisers of the D.H Lawrence Festival in Eastwood.

Ben sings really popular covers sets which folks seem to like singing along with but writes his own songs, and has been busy during Lockdown putting together his debut album, produced by Ben Marshall (Fine Art Society) with his new band - The Balancing Acts. He is a varied and interesting songwriter with songs that tell stories and tales of our modern society. With a following within Nottingham of both punters and performers, he always has good audiences and puts on great gigs throughout the town.

Spin the Wheel Podcast #08 - Paul Savage - Stand Up Stalwart & Comic Strip Creator

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?

I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.  So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #08 is with a guy that I've known as an acquaintance for some time, but only recently got to know - Paul Savage.

Paul is a Stand Up Comedian who has had an interesting and erratic past but manages to put all his life experiences into use when writing jokes for himself and for others to bring onto a stage. Paul is a comic artist too and has put together cartoons for a book (But Doctor, I am a Collection of Comic Strips by Paul Savage) as well as putting them out on his socials.

Paul and I chat about many things which didn't make the edit, alongside these ones that did! - his fave roast and birthday, as well as how he got into Comedy and what music to play to a 4 year old to get them hyper before giving them back to their parents!

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?

I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.  So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #07 is with a very old friend of mine (that's the fact that we've known each other for ages... not a slight on his age!!) Joe Fisher. Joe is one of the people that has encouraged me the most in pursuing my musical comedy and has been a great friend since we met compering at Greenbelt Festival in the early 2000s. He is a constant chatterbox which made this episode very difficult to edit!  Joe is a lovely feller and we talk about so many things - only some of them really relating to the questions. We chat about his childhood and his early years touring in Canada, him working at the Olympics and my part in that, his hero Roy Castle, as well as Joe reminiscing about his past life as a breakdancer!

Spin the Wheel Podcast #06 - Emma McGann - Singer, Songwriter, Streamer

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.

So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #06 is with online popstar Emma McGann. Emma is a full time musician who lives her life mainly online (yeah we all do right? have you seen the world?!) as she has been making a living as a streaming artist for the last bunch of years. She is a fantastic guitarist, a really interesting person and someone who engages with online audiences all over the globe on a just about daily basis.

Emma is a lovely person who I got to know through the music scene in Coventry a bunch of years ago, and kind of just kept in touch with via socials and the odd bits and pieces. She's got loads of experience with the whole Youtuber thing and we chatted about her music, her family, her misunderstanding of my questions which led to a totally different but really interesting conversation. We also touched on Kylie, and her pug Roxy and all kinds of interesting tangents!

Spin the Wheel Podcast #05 - Anna Pumer - Photographer Extraordinaire

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now.

So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #05 is with kickass photographer Anna Pumer - who not only captures some of the best photographs around, but is also the person who took my wedding photographs! She is such an exuberant and vivacious person and can natter with the best of them which makes her the perfect kind of guest for Spin the Wheel!

Anna is a great storyteller whether with words or pictures, and her life as a journalist leads us to stories about her travels across the world taking photos, as well as giving us an insight into her music and telly tastes too - there really is no way of telling what the wheel is going to do and where it might take us!!

Spin The Wheel Podcast #04 - Rich Huxley - Hope & Social

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now. So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit

Episode #04 is with the whirling dervish (is that spelt correctly?) of a guitarist from Yorkshire's own rock & roll troubadours Hope & Social

Rich is a guy I've met a few times simply on the fact that I LOVE HIS BAND!!! (full disclosure) I've been lucky not only to see them play a bunch of times, but spend time drinking and chatting nonsense with them which makes him perfect Spin the Wheel fodder!

From running their own Garden Party, to organising bus trips to the Seaside, to Christmas gigs on trains, to Glastonbury, to the Tour de France - Hope and Social manage to get their infectiously positive outlook and joyous charm to their fans, local area, and local communities - see their Youtube Channel for video evidence!

Rich not only writes, plays, and performs with H&S but is also involved with musical projects of various kinds around Yorkshire - whether it's delivering seminars and lectures about business models at Universities or encouraging people to find their joy through music and performance. Rich has what he refers to as a "Portfolio Career" (which means he does bits of all sorts of things) which has meant that he's managed to forge a career path out of doing what he loves.... and is a grand feller to have a natter of a Friday to n'all!

Spin The Wheel Podcast #02 - Hannah Jordan - Weapons of Sound

A while ago I bought a spinner wheel from IKEA because… well, why wouldn’t you?

I haven’t really found a proper use for it until now. So here it is…The Spin The Wheel Podcast with The Edi Johnston Bit.

A random interview with random questions, chosen by the spin of the wheel! 24 questions, (one per each section on the wheel) focussing on everything or maybe nothing from any person’s life, loves and livelihood.

Episode #02 is with the front woman from the most ecological band on the planet, the Weapons of Sound - it's Hannah Jordan!

Hannah has been the inimitable fearless & fabulous front woman of WOS for a number of years and plays everything - including the Kitchen Sink! She has played gigs and done workshops with schools, youth groups, students, bankers, businessmen and has got all of them to realise the importance of teamwork and working together through the medium of hitting some rubbish with some plastic pipes.

She's performed at Buckingham Palace, The Albert Hall, Wembley, Twickenham, the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, Glastonbury, Reading festival - and that's just in this country! Having travelled throughout Europe, Hannah and the band have spread the message of recycling and reusing rubbish far and wide and continue to do so wherever possible (worldwide pandemic permitting!)

A bandmate and workshop leader with Edi for a number of years, Hannah is also a youth worker in Plymouth and helps young people in her work on a daily basis. Hope you enjoy the chat and natter and work out why "Hannah is Gravy" should be on the next band merchandise!

*WHAT IS IT?*

A random interview with random questions, chosen by the spin of the wheel! 24 questions, (one per each section on the wheel) focussing on everything or maybe nothing from any person’s life, loves and livelihood.

I’ll be having a chat with a guest from all areas of life and we'll Spin the Wheel 6 times – (one of those may well be rigged if there’s a question I REALLY want my guest to answer) – and then see whereabouts that chat might take us.

That's it!

Episode #01 is with the man they call Hobbit.

Hobbit is a World Champion Beatboxer as part of the Beatbox Collective as well as being a multi time winner of both the UK Team and Loopstation Championships. He has performed with so many artists across the world and performed in front of huge crowds simply by being able to make a bunch of noises with his mouth! He now works with a bunch of other performers to run an agency called 5th Element as well as running the UK Beatbox Championships themselves. He's been a stage performer, working with theatre groups on tours where he has been the entire sound effects department, and has more recently paired with Jarred Christmas to create a Beatbox/Comedy show which has been not only a sellout show at the Edinburgh Festival, but toured throughout the country.

In addition to all this stuff, Hobbit was in The AFC alongside Edi for a number of years and is one of his oldest friends so this was a lovely chat between guys who have not seen each other for far too long - enjoy the random-ness of this interview/conversation in all it's glory!
