How Africa Yoga Project transformed the life of a young single mother in Nairobi, Kenya. Spiritually Fit with Wanji Eliam
Bonus Episode: Guest interview with Wanji! This interview follows episode 39 with Paige Elenson, co-founder of Africa Yoga Project.  Wanji shares her story about AYP transforming and saving her life, as a student then becoming a Certified Baptiste Teacher, and now a Programs Manager for AYP.  She is passionate about sharing yoga and her love of and gratitude for AYP.  Wanji will share about AYP's upcoming global Sweat Serve Share challenge starting November 1, 2020, in which she is one of the teachers leading yoga and meditation.  To join this challenge visit africayogaproject.org.   Wanji chatted with me from her home in Nairobi, Kenya.  Eliam Wanjiku (Wanji), Programs Manager for Africa Yoga Project (AYP), is part of the senior management of the organization, one of its oldest employees and most experienced teachers, and a graduate of the program. Wanji has been part of AYP since her first class in 2009. After that first class she made up her mind that yoga was what she wanted to do with her life. She became a certified Baptiste Yoga Teacher through AYP's 200-hour training and has been teaching yoga for 10 years. She has since completed Baptiste Level 2, Baron Baptiste's Leadership Workshop and numerous other trainings in Kenya, Mexico and the US. She has worn many hats at AYP, working on donor engagement, the mentorship program, coordinating AYP teachers across Africa, managing the Shine Center (AYP's community wellness and yoga center in Nairobi), in marketing and communications as AYP Brand Manager and as Executive Assistant to Paige Elenson, AYP Co-Founder and Executive Director. Wanji's experience as a yoga teacher ranges from free outreach classes in the community where she grew up (Kariobangi, a low-income neighborhood in Nairobi) to private lessons for ambassadors and the UN community in Nairobi. She has attended  Hanuman Festival in Colorado and has taught yoga on 5 AYP fundraising tours at yoga studios across the US. She has led retreats and workshops in Africa and will lead her first retreat in Europe in September. In June she will represent AYP on the organization's first fundraising tour in Europe, teaching at yoga studios across the Netherlands and Belgium. Wanji has experience teaching Baptiste Power Yoga, YOD (Your Own Determination) and pre-natal yoga. She has a diploma in Business Management and certifications in computer skills and disaster management. She is also a trained doula. Wanji's intention as a yoga teacher is to lead practices that are soothing and challenging, according to each student's needs in a given moment. Wanji is leading change by demonstrating the importance of yoga to the world. She believes when we come together to practice yoga it inspires us to share ideas and release stress.

Kiss the Ground. A movie review and meditation with mantra: Plant a seed. Heal our soils. Heal our planet. Heal ourselves.
Today's episode is inspired by the Netflix documentary, "Kiss the Ground."  As a response to this powerful documentary, I was inspired to plant seeds, literally in my garden, and plant the message that each one of us has an opportunity to heal our planet by healing our soils.  I highly recommend watching this informative movie, narrated by Woody Harrelson, and teachings from scientists and farmers around the world, on how we as humans can regenerate damaged, parched lands, to let Mother Nature do what she does best: to thrive and provide for us.   It's up to us to put our "thank you" into action, by offering healing practices into our soils through mindful planting, composting, and stopping methods which harm our soils.  And, harming our soil ultimately harms our crops, animals, and ourselves.  This is my way of planting seeds, to use my voice and small platform to ask you.  What will you do to make a difference?  Watch the movie.  This movie is refreshingly not about politics.  It's focused on science, agronomy, and agriculture, and done in a way which left me feeling hopeful and inspired.  I hope it impacts you in a positive way as it has done for me.   And, enjoy my short meditation, with the mantra "Plant a seed. Heal our soils. Heal our planet. Heal ourselves." It's an offering of lovingkindness, metta, to our planet, to Mother Nature.  As always, thank you for tuning in!  I will be back with another guest interview next week, to hear how my guests stay spiritually fit!  Let me know if something shared here was helpful or inspired something in you.  Let me know in a review or DM me.  I appreciate you tuning in! 10 minute Yoga when you feel too busy or too tired to get to your mat - dedicated to health care workers and fire fighters
This is a special practice dedicated to health care workers, fire fighters, or anyone who is struggling to get to their mat.  I have friends who are working long days at the hospital, parents who are weary from online school at home, and I've been hearing students say they just don't have time or energy to get to their mat.  This episode is for you.  It is also for anyone who has an injury and can't manage a downward dog or chaturanga.  It is for anyone who needs a gentle wakeup, or a gentle way to let go of your day and head to sleep.  The practice ends with me leading you into savasana and for you to stay as long as you would like.  Be gentle with yourself.  Thank you to all of you heroes, keep our lives and properties safe.   Namaste, Amelia Andaleon *************************************** Thank you for tuning in! Black Lives Matter - listening and learning
My unscripted, transparent, in the moment thoughts on racism, and police brutality, from me, a POC (person of color), Asian-American. I'm not an expert or authority on Black Lives Matter and I've been listening and learning, to be better and do better. I share my thoughts on why SOME of the yoga community SEEMED to be quiet during BLM. And, wrap up with a 8:46 silent meditation in honor of George Floyd. 🙏🏽 I admit this unscripted episode is not polished but, it's me talking to you, freestyle. I might edit down the road but right now it's me being honest and sometimes rambly, with the intention to share ideas and resources to support Black Lives Matter. I find myself admitting I was both on the receiving end of racial slurs and born into a family who was sometimes racist. And, while I wanted to share honest examples of racism I was not proud to speak aloud, I share how it's possible to do a u-turn from unfair judgment to acceptance. Shining light on the darkness, instead of ignoring the problems, is a step towards transformation. Just because you sweep those dust bunnies under the couch doesn't mean the dirt is gone. It's time to awaken and be courageous enough to look where the dirt is hiding. 60 min Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga - starting with core and adding HIIT to stoke the inner fire.
Live recording from May 13, 2020 class for Baptiste Power Yoga San Francisco. 60 min rigorous Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga - starting with core in beginning of class and adding HIIT (high intensity interval training) with mountain climbers to stoke the inner fire. This class is best suited for experienced yogis. AND, anyone is welcome to this practice. Baptiste Power Yoga is traditionally practiced in a 90-95 degree room without music. You're welcome to add heat in your practice space to ramp up the sweat and detox. As an option, I have included a playlist for your background music throughout the class starting with the first "song" named "Silent Track", which is 4 min of silence. You might opt to practice in silence and wait until savasana to start the song "Aum." Spotify playlist link included below. Because the beginning of the live recording is missing I've recorded a separate segment to start this class. You will hear a change in the volume and audio quality when the live recording kicks in. May you flow with breath, sweat and detox, and be up to something bigger than yourself! Namaste 🙏🏽 Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2aOBRrmwUIbXtBy73QDJqy?si=PzTBxXcbSV6Sj40gr3Vrgw ////////////////////////////////////////// WANT MORE BAPTISTE POWER VINYASA? Meditate to ease anxiety during this pandemic and invite peace & calm. Option to use essential oils.
Week 9, phase 2 of shelter in place, and corona fatigue might be kicking in where you're just getting fed up with this pandemic. I'm here to tell you I get it, I'm frickin' tired of this too, and I encourage you to hang in there, that we can do it together. And, to offer this meditation to ease anxiety and worry and invite peace and calm. As an option, I also invite you to use the doTerra Adaptiv essential oil to enhance your meditation. Other oils: wild orange, lavender, copaiba, spearmint, neroli, sweetgum. Breathe in presence, let go of anxiety and worry. Repeat: "I am peaceful. I am calm." 🙏🏽 Namaste, Amelia Andaleon

Yoga nidra to dispel fear and invite deep sleep (essential oils optional)
The recent announcement to extend shelter in place another month in California felt like someone moving the finish line further away, like the proverbial pandemic carrot got f#in yanked away. The struggle is real. For me, to stay spiritually fit is to trust in a higher truth especially when tempted to give up, collapse in a heap of worry, eat emotions (please no more carbs!), or lose sleep numbing out with Netflix . So many of us are not sleeping well right now and it’s one of our most effective ways to keep our body, mind and spirit fit. When sleep-deprived we can succumb to self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors. Keep the course to self-care. I offer this yoga nidra to invite a deep rest, to release fear and trust that you are safe, now and in the future. As an option, I also mention essential oils to enhance your yoga nidra. Consider using lavender, peppermint, cinnamon, black spruce, or any other oils with the properties to dispel fear. Breathe deep and slow and relax the entire body. I wish you peace and a sweet, deep, restful sleep. If you are enjoying these episodes please share with others and leave a review to let me know you appreciate my podcast! Namaste 🙏🏽

Rise Up
Rise up because you can. Rise for the weary and the hungry and the grieving and the gone. Rise because your lungs breathe and fuel a life to heal and to serve. Rise for our brothers and sisters who stand in the face of fear. Rise up for those who can’t. Rise up because YOU can. I rise up for you. And, when I can’t will you please rise for me? Rise up for those warrior women and men. Rise up to say “thank you” and “Amen.” - Amelia Andaleon

Get curious, not furious - a meditation to shift emotionally charged reactions to peace and calm.
"Get curious, not furious" is a powerful mantra in this 15 minute meditation to shift emotionally charged reactions from a state of stress to peace and calm. Use this meditation as a tool to break the habit of lashing out with undesirable words or behaviors, towards others or towards yourself. This exercise trains the body and mind to relax, observe your feelings, pause, and choose calm over habitual knee-jerk reactions.
