We have a special mini-series we’re releasing this week: Engaging in Storytelling:  A 3-part collaborative podcast series with SPOR Cast, Matters of Engagement and PEP Talks. We each cover a different angle on patient stories and storytelling - together they provide a rich picture of some of the challenges, concerns, and also opportunities when it comes to engaging in storytelling. We will be sharing all three episodes on our platforms.

In this episode, Beverley and Lisa have an earthquake of a conversation with public health hero André Picard, Canada’s foremost health journalist. Beverley and Lisa talk candidly with André, who shares his vision and hope for health care, for patients and families and for health research across Canada. During the conversation, the group tackles the big questions surrounding COVID-19 and get some inspiring answers about how to rebuild trust for patient partners.

What an episode!  An extraordinary conversation with Terri Fleming, Unit Director of Research Ethics BC.  Learn about Research Ethics here in BC and how Terri and her team had to pivot, FAST, when COVID hit.  Decision makers, Clinicians , Researchers and Patient Partners will find this interview incredibly informative and motivational.

To wrap up the special COVID series, the BC SUPPORT Unit and SPORcast hosted a Virtual Town Hall on July 9, 2020. Facilitated by Stirling Bryan, President of Academic Health Sciences Network and Lisa Ridgway of SPORcast.  The event brought together, Megan, a patient partner, Danielle, the new Scientific Director for BC SUPPORT Unit, Stefanie with REACH BC and Alison, Director of Clinical Trials BC  discuss opportunities to get involved in supporting COVID-19 related research.

We talk with Genevieve Creighton about KT Pathways, a Knowledge Translation Platform initiated by the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.  Gen shares how KT Pathways is supporting COVID 19 and how everyone can benefit.

A great conversation with Alison Orth, Director of Clinical Trials BC, who is leading a national initiative to engage research participants about their experience with clinical research in order to enhance patient and public participation in trials and their overall experience.  Alison shared the impact of COVID on clinical trials and where patients can play stewardship roles in patient-oriented research within the Clinical Trial environment.

On episode #3 of our Stronger Together COVID series in partnership with BC SUPPORT Unit, we talk with two young, intelligent, and insightful patient partners; Sarah Fletcher and Megan O'Reilly about their experience both as patient partners and personally during COVID 19.  

On Episode #2 of our COVID Series in partnership with BC SUPPORT Unit we talk with Stefanie Cheah, REACH BC's Project Manager on the launch of this new digital platform that connects "British Columbians with researchers, to advance all kinds of health research here in BC, with the aim to make health care better for everyone."

The 1st episode of our Stronger Together: Adapting Patient Oriented Research During COVID-19 Virtual Town Hall and Podcast Series with Stirling Bryan, in his new position at the helm of the BC Academic Health Sciences Network, and Danielle Lavalee, BC SUPPORT Unit's new Scientific Director.

Dr. Charlotte Loppie is a Professor in the School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria, and the Director of the university’s Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement. 

In this episode, we are a bit provocative in discussing cultural humility and safety.  This will be an ongoing dialogue in order to build relationships in patient oriented research with under represented groups.

In this episode, we spent time with Kent Cadogan Loftsgard discussing his lengthy career as a healthcare educator, and also his lifelong healthcare experience living with a congenital childhood condition.  

This episode with Christina is a robust conversation on patient voices and the impact on patient safety and quality of care.  Christina shares her own personal story of why she so passionate in her work and where she thinks patient engagement, safety and quality are going.

Carolyn Canfield works as a citizen-patient across Canada and internationally to expand opportunities for patients, carers and communities to partner with healthcare professionals to transform health systems. Following personal tragedy from care failures in 2008, her full-time volunteering has earned her recognition as Canada’s first Patient Safety Champion in 2014, and faculty appointment at UBC with the Department of Family Practice, first as Honorary Lecturer and now as Adjunct Professor.

Bev, Lisa and Carolyn sound off on patient engagement, citizen patients and how to continue influencing change in patient oriented research.

This episode is a conversation with Taylor Hainstock, Research Liaison Lead with the Vancouver Island Centre of the BC SUPPORT Unit; a partnership  between University of Victoria, Vancouver Island Health Research and Island Health Medical Department.

Bev and Lisa share their own personal stories about why they are passionate about patient-oriented research, impacting health outcomes and how SPORcast came about in the spring of 2019.
