#461: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of DL/EDGE Class with Devin Jackson)

#461: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of DL/EDGE Class with Devin Jackson)

1. Dane Brugler said that Dallas Turner is probably the favorite to be the first defensive player off the board. Do you share that view and if so, what on tape makes him such an intriguing talent? Do you think Dallas Turner is capable of evolving into that "Batman" teams covet in their pass rush?

2. What makes Jared Verse an instant impact Day 1 NFL starter and why would some teams have him higher than Dallas Turner on their boards?

3. Do you think Laiatu Latu is worth a top-15 pick, or do you think he's a designated pass rusher at best in the NFL?

4. Would you be surprised if Chop Robinson falls out of the first round altogether? If not, how high can you see him going?

5. Do you believe Darius Robinson continued his momentum at the Combine and does he have a very good chance at hearing his name called on Day 1?

6. Do you think Byron Murphy did what he had to do at the Combine to be drafted in the top-15?

7. Before the Combine, Daniel Jeremiah had Braden Fiske ranked as his 45th overall prospect in the draft. Would you be surprised if Fiske gets drafted even earlier than that?

8. What makes Johnny Newton worthy of an investment in the 20-35 range and do you still expect him to hear his name called around then?

#460: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of LB Class with Bill Carroll)

#460: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of LB Class with Bill Carroll)

1. For the second consecutive year, we seem to be looking at a very underwhelming crop of linebackers. What is your overall impression of this group and are there still solid options for LB-needy teams to consider?

2. When you factor in both the athletic promise and the troublesome medical history of Payton Wilson, how high can you see him getting drafted?

3. Since Junior Colson both played in and led a pretty comprehensive, pro-style defense in college, can you see him wearing the green dot for an NFL defense in his rookie season?

4. If any LB in this class were a strong candidate to go on Day 1, why would it be Edgerrin Cooper?

5. Do you think Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. has the highest floor out of any LB in this class outside of Junior Colson?

#459: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of RB Class with Jeff Barnes)

#459: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of RB Class with Jeff Barnes)

1. Last week, shortly after NFL free agency began, we saw a rather unprecedented market for running backs develop, especially by today's standards. And a big reason why that happened, according to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network, is that the NFL is very down on the 2024 RB class. So I have a two-part question for you Jeff. First, what is your overall assessment of this crop of running backs and second, regardless of what you believe, why do you think NFL scouts and personnel executives feel the way they do?

2. Based on his film alone, why do you think most consider Jonathan Brooks to be the best RB of the bunch? Even though he is still recovering from an ACL tear, would you still be surprised if he isn't the first RB off the board?

3. Do you think Blake Corum is more of a second-string RB, even though he has an every-down skill-set? Hypothetically speaking, if Corum got selected by Jim Harbaugh (who obviously coached him in college) and the Chargers on late Day 2 or early Day 3, can you see him becoming a bona fide NFL starter?

4. Given that the NFL highly covets skill position players who are known for making explosive plays (10+ yards) on a regular basis, would you be surprised if Jaylen Wright is the second RB off the board?

5. Bucky Irving is undersized (5-9, 192) and his lack of explosiveness was on full display at the Combine. Were you surprised by that aspect of his performance in Indy and can he still be an effective "change-up" option in an NFL RB stable?

6. Trey Benson only averaged 13.5 touches per game last season and only hit the 20-carry mark in one game during his two-year collegiate career. Do you think he is fully capable of shouldering a bigger load in the NFL?

#458: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of DB Class with Bill Carroll)

#458: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of DB Class with Bill Carroll)

1. If Terrion Arnold has a case to be the first defensive player off the board on April 25, what is it?

2. Would you be surprised if Quinyon Mitchell ends up being the best corner in this class?

3. Clemson's Nate Wiggins is arguably the most "traits-y" corner in this draft class, but he had a rather disappointing Combine, only weighing in at 173 pounds (2nd percentile) and measuring in at an arm length of 30 1/2" (18th percentile). Do those measurements alone kick him out of the first round altogether?

4. Do you think Cooper DeJean would be best served by switching to safety in the NFL? Should whatever team that drafts Cooper DeJean strongly consider using him as a punt and/or kickoff return specialist early in his career?

5. If Kool-Aid McKinstry runs a respectable time at the Alabama Pro Day this week, do you think he locks himself into the tail-end of the first round at least?

6. What do you like about Mike Sainristil's game and is he worth an investment at some point on Day 2?

7. What is Tyler Nubin's case as the best safety in this year's draft?

#457: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of WR/TE Class with Nick Martin)

#457: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of WR/TE Class with Nick Martin)

1. For quite some time, Ohio State's Marvin Harrison, Jr. has been touted as a generational WR prospect. Several consider him as the best overall prospect in this draft class regardless of position. What exactly makes Marvin Harrison, Jr. such a rare, special talent?

2. If there is a case for Malik Nabers to be drafted ahead of Marvin Harrison, Jr., what is it?

3. What does Rome Odunze bring to the table that neither Marvin Harrison, Jr. nor Malik Nabers do?

4. What is the best trait in Brian Thomas, Jr.'s game aside from his effectiveness in the deep passing game?

5. What makes Adonai Mitchell such a tailor-made weapon for QB's like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen?

6. What makes Xavier Worthy a more well-rounded player as opposed to just being a ludicrously fast big-play threat?

7. What makes Brock Bowers such a game-changer? Say you're the Bears at 9 and the top three WR's are all gone, would Brock Bowers make sense for them to take there?

8. As big of a drop-off as there is from Brock Bowers to the rest of this TE crop, there does seem to be a consensus TE2 in another Texas Longhorn, Ja'Tavion Sanders. Why is Sanders likely to be the second TE off the board?

#456: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of OL Class with Joey Richards)

#456: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Analysis of OL Class with Joey Richards)

1. NFL insider Benjamin Allbright reported that the NFL is quite lower on Joe Alt than draft media is and added that the league has compared him to Mike McGlinchey, another former Notre Dame OT that you're quite familiar with. Do you agree or disagree with the NFL's assessment of Joe Alt, and if you disagree, why will Alt likely be a better player than the current Broncos RT?

2. Should whoever drafts Taliese Fuaga him try him at tackle first and then switch him to guard if he fails? Would you be surprised if he's the first OT off the board?

3. Why do you think the hype cooled off a bit on Olu Fashanu in the past year? At the Senior Bowl, I had a few conversations with Brandon Thorn, who is THE guy to go to for OL evaluations, and he said that if the big three WR are gone at 9 and Fashanu is still there, the Bears should not hesitate to run the card up to the podium and make Fashanu Caleb Williams' blindside protector. Would you do that if you were Ryan Poles?

4. In your view, what is J.C. Latham's best position at the NFL level?

5. Let's say, hypothetically speaking, Amarius Mims' medical evaluations turn out good. How high can you see him being drafted in that scenario?

6. Do you think the best role for Troy Fautanu at the NFL level is one similar to Alijah Vera-Tucker, meaning he starts at guard but is able to kick outside in a pinch?

7. If his health situation improves over the next six weeks, do you think Jackson Powers-Johnson is worth a top-20-25 pick?

#455: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Combine Preview + Mock Draft with Jeff Barnes)

#455: Dash To The Draft 2024 (Combine Preview + Mock Draft with Jeff Barnes)

1. Aside from positional value, what makes J.J. McCarthy worth a top-10 pick, and would it surprise you if he got drafted before either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye?

2. One player expected to shine in on-field workouts at the Combine is Texas DT Byron Murphy. According to NFL Draft Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic, Murphy's goals are to run a 4.8-second 40, a 7.2-second three cone drill, and do "at least" 35 bench press reps. If he hits those numbers, will Byron Murphy solidify himself as a top-15 pick in this draft?

3. Should he test as well or better than expected, can you see Chop Robinson being a top-20 pick, especially given the fact the league constantly emphasizes traits when it comes to rushing the QB?

4. If Amarius Mims posts freakish testing numbers as expected and passes medical exams, does that make him the clear-cut OT4 in this class, if not better?

5. If Malik Nabers steals the show during the pre-draft process, would you be surprised if he gets drafted before Marvin Harrison, Jr.?

#454: 2024 Houston Texans Offseason Preview (with Vinod Tonangi)

#454: 2024 Houston Texans Offseason Preview (with Vinod Tonangi)

1. The first big move of the Texans off-season occurred the week before the Super Bowl as they were able to retain both offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik (who was a hot head coaching candidate) and QB's coach Jerrod Johnson (who was a hot OC candidate) on revised contracts. Does this move suggest to you that Jerrod Johnson will replace Bobby Slowik at offensive coordinator should Slowik get a head coaching job in 2025?

2. Which positions do the Texans need to address the most in both free agency and the draft in order to take another massive step forward next season?

3. A key player entering the final year of his rookie deal is WR Nico Collins. Do you think locking him up to a long-term extension before Week 1 is a very high priority for the Texans?

4. In his first three seasons as GM, Nick Caserio has approached free agency by avoiding "Tiffany's" signings as much as possible and primarily shopping at The Dollar Tree if you know what I mean. However, with a star QB on a rookie deal in C.J. Stroud and north of $50 million in effective cap space, it may be wise for the Texans to reel in a big fish off the free agent market. One such player expected to hit the open market is Chiefs All Pro DT Chris Jones. If Jones and his agent are taking other teams calls on March 11, how aggressively do you think the Texans will be eyeballing him?

5. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported early this week that there's buzz across the entire NFL that the Texans may try to upgrade the running back position to help take the offense to an even higher level. The crop of running backs in the 2024 NFL Draft is considered underwhelming, thus the Texans may look to free agency to make such an investment in their running game. Which one of prospective free agent RB's Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry would make the most sense for the Texans and why?

6. Before the free agent market even opens, it is a safe bet that Nick Caserio and the Texans front office will keep close tabs on their in-house free agents, especially DE Jonathan Greenard, TE Dalton Schultz, CB Steven Nelson, DT Sheldon Rankins and LB Blake Cashman. Which one of those five do you believe the Texans are most likely to re-sign, and which one do you believe is most likely headed elsewhere?

7. What would a realistic, yet ideal free agent haul for the Texans look like in your view?

#453: 2024 Chicago Bears Offseason Preview (with Carl Dumler)

#453: 2024 Chicago Bears Offseason Preview (with Carl Dumler)

1. Based on what you've seen from their tape thus far, do you think Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or even Jayden Daniels would be an automatic upgrade over Justin Fields and why?

2. If you're Ryan Poles, do you commit to trading Justin Fields by mid-March, or would you be willing to hold on to him until April, especially if neither Caleb Williams nor Drake Maye impress in interviews at the Combine?

3. According to NFL insider Brad Spielberger of PFF, the Bears would probably be able to receive picks 2 and 40 this year plus Washington's 2025 first to move down one spot. If you're Ryan Poles and you see little to no gap between Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, would you accept such an offer?

4. What are you thoughts on the Bears hire of Shane Waldron as OC and why would Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or even Justin Fields benefit from working with him?

5. Starting February 20, NFL clubs will have until 4 PM ET on March 5 to apply franchise tags to certain players. If a deal doesn't seem it is within reach by then, should the Bears use the franchise tag on All Pro CB Jaylon Johnson?

6. If the Bears release S Eddie Jackson, the Bears will save an additional $12.56 million in 2024 cap space and if they release G/C (and friend of the pod) Cody Whitehair, they will save an additional $9.15 million in cap space. Should the Bears release one or both of those players?

7. When it comes to free agency this spring, should the Bears be far more frugal compared to last year and save their next big shopping spree for 2025? Or would you go all in to build the best team possible around your rookie QB right now?

8. Three-round mock draft

-The Cardinals will trade down from the #4 overall pick if Marvin Harrison, Jr. is off the board

-Ben Johnson and Bobby Slowik will be the two hottest head coaching candidates in 2025

-Because of the historically low number of underclassmen in the 2024 NFL Draft, the first round will be an unprecedented buyer's market

-The Chiefs will bring back Eric Bieniemy for the 2024 season

-Due to the losses of Ran Carthon and Adam Peters, the 49ers roster will take a step back in 2024

5. Super Bowl LVIII Game Preview

6. Bold Predictions

-DKrom: L'Jarius Sneed intercepts 2 passes and comes up with the play of the game to help seal the win for the Chiefs. With 2:30 left in the 4th, and the Chiefs leading 21-17, he strip-sacks Brock Purdy on a third-down blitz and the Chiefs recover the fumble inside the 49ers 20. That sets up the game-clinching TD...and cements MVP honors for Sneed

-Hal: Patrick Mahomes throws three interceptions, including one to former Chief Charvarius Ward on the final drive of the game to seal the win for the 49ers

7. Challenge Flags

-Hal: NFL fans everywhere...cherish this game and the players...and may SBLVIII be the best Super Bowl ever!!!

-New Falcons head coach Raheem Morris was among three reported "Plan B" options for the Falcons that also included Texans OC Bobby Slowik (whom the Falcons were VERY impressed by in his initial interview), and former Titans HC Mike Vrabel. Do you think the Falcons hired the best one of the three?

-During his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday, Florio said he got the impression from some highly trusted sources that the Chiefs are preparing for the possibility of Andy Reid retiring after the Chiefs season concludes. And IF that happens, he believes Chiefs players would lobby for Eric Bieniemy to be Reid's successor. If you're the Hunt family in that scenario, do you honor the players' wishes...or do you make a big run at Bill Belichick?

3. Two of the NFL's most controversial rules rose to the surface in Week 2. First, we were reminded of the infamous touchback rule as Justin Jefferson fumbled the ball into the end zone from the goal line, giving the Eagles possession at their own 20. Second, we saw the "tush push" back in full force...and it wasn't just the Eagles. Their divisional rival Giants ran that play on a 4th-and-1 in the fourth quarter and as usual, the defense was put at a significant disadvantage. Should the NFL abolish both the “tush push” and the touchback rule next year?

-The significant injuries and subsequent lengthy absences of Lions DE James Houston and DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson significantly diminish Detroit's chances of winning the NFC North

-Barring dramatic improvement from Zach Wilson, the Jets should trade for Saints QB Jameis Winston

#413: Latest NFL News & Notes + Week 1 Preseason Recap (with Hal Bent)

1. Do you see Ezekiel Elliott's role in New England as essentially a short-yardage/goal line back and nothing more?

2. Do you see Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook splitting carries 50/50 all season long?

3. Would it be wise to make a bet at this very moment on the Jets to lead the NFL in sacks this season?

4. Despite the WILD roller coaster ride Anthony Richardson has been in both camp and preseason play...and will likely be all season long...the Colts had no other choice but to name him their Week 1 starting QB, did they?

5. Taking Jimmy Garoppolo's injury history into account, should the Raiders be giving Aidan O'Connell reps with the first-string offense in practice starting now?

6. Do you think the Bears have the ingredients in place for Justin Fields to have a Josh Allen/Jalen Hurts-level breakout season?

7. If the Broncos OL doesn't show substantial improvement these next few weeks, do you think Russell Wilson gets benched due to injury (or poor performance) by Week 5, if not sooner?

8. Standout performers from Preseason Week 1

-DKrom: Jordan Love, Keeanu Benton

-Hal: Deuce Vaughn, Malik Cunningham

9. What are the main things you're looking for in this week's preseason games?

#412: Latest NFL News & Notes + Week 1 Preseason Preview (with Hal Bent)

1. Does the suspension of Charles Omenihu give Chris Jones additional leverage in contract negotiations with the Chiefs?

2. IF the Chiefs end up trading Chris Jones, what kind of package should they expect in return?

3. If Joe Burrow is just say 80-85% on the eve of the season opener against the Browns, should the Bengals rest him for the first game or two, if not longer?

4. What is the case for the Bills to be the team to dethrone the Chiefs in the AFC as opposed to the Bengals?

5. With Dan Snyder now (finally) out of the picture, does this whole ridiculous episode prove that Jim Irsay is now the worst owner in the NFL? If Jonathan Taylor is either traded or doesn't play this season, do you fear his absence will stunt the growth of Anthony Richardson?

6. If the Commanders offense doesn't gel quickly, do you see this as a situation where the wheels fall off fast given Ron Rivera's comments about Eric Bieniemy?

7. The Tennessee Titans are doing something very interesting for their preseason opener against the Bears. On Friday and Saturday (which is the day of the game), HC Mike Vrabel will transfer head coaching duties to Assistant Head Coach/DL coach Terrell Williams, who's regarded as a promising potential HC in league circles. I am personally a big fan of what Vrabel is doing here. So my question is Hal, should the NFL require every team to give one of their assistant coaches, especially a minority, a chance to build their resume by letting him be the acting head coach in a preseason game?

8. What are you watching for in the Texans/Patriots game tonight?

9. What are the main things you’ll be paying attention to in the rest of this week’s preseason slate?
