After competing for the French National Team at the Sydney Olympics, Myriam retired from Synchronized Swimming to attend business school. She worked for Accorhotels in marketing and sponsorship in France, Thailand, and Australia and eventually resumed her sporting career to compete for the Australian National Team in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Following her second retirement, Myriam combined her business and sports knowledge to return to sport and worked in high performance and sport management in England and in the U.S for several years before founded Athletes Soul.
Where are you from?
I was born in Lyon, France. I have an older step-brother who lived with us when I was little and then it was just me, my parents and my cat.
When and how did you start synchronized swimming?
I grew up in a family of skiers. We spent a lot of time in the mountains in winter and summer. So there was no background in swimming in my family but I always loved the water. I saw Muriel Hermine (a famous French synchronized swimmer) on TV and knew this is what I wanted to do. It took me about a year to convince my mum to look into it. I was six when she finally registered me with the local club.
Can you give us a summary of your career?
I had abilities for the sport and pretty quickly I started training five days per week. We lived pretty far from the pool and, in middle school, it would take me 1.5 hours to get to practice from school. I would take the regional bus, then the city bus, the subway and another bus. But I had all my friends at swimming and I loved it so I never thought of it as difficult. I would use the travel time to do my homework.
I competed in age group national championships from 10 years old on. I won my first national championships at 12 and participated in youth national team every year after that. At 15, I moved to the National Training Center in Paris to train for the Junior World Championships. After that, I made the senior national team and participated in many international competitions: winning the silver and bronze medals in European championships and cups, placing in top five at world championships and cups, and fourth at the 2000 Olympic Games. I was promoted to the duet after Sydney and competed for another two years with the French Team. I retired at the end of 2002 and then went to business school. I returned to the sport at the end of 2005 and competed in the Beijing Olympics for Australia in 2008, placing seventh.

"We're looking for something more digital" -Business Owner
"We would like to be able to track our ROI and customer analytics" -Business Owners
"We want our brand to be seen on non-game days and in the off-season" -Business Owner
These are all things my co-founder and I heard repeatedly from business owners while we were outselling sponsorship for the two minor professional hockey teams we were managing in 2017. One problem we often faced was that traditional inventory included in our sponsorship packages like rink boards and scoreboard ads were no longer appealing to brands. While we did have packages that included promotion on our team's website and social media this did little drive traffic into our partner's establishments. Instead, business owners wanted to be able to reach their target market digitally and be able to measure their return on investment with data. This is where the concept of FanSaves was born.
On the FanSaves App, you can follow your favorite sports teams and get access to discounts and deals offered by their sponsors. The app is free for fans to download and is a great digital conduit between sponsors and fans helping drive engagement. Sports fans love that they can save money in their community while supporting their favorite teams.
At FanSaves we are passionate about innovation and providing our partners with the digital solutions they need to drive sales.

Geekletes is a newly opened Esports Studio located in the popular southern Dallas, sports-centric city of Desoto, TX. Home of popular athletes such as Von Miller and Errol Spence Jr. , Martin chose to relocate their Geekletes headquarters from their 1500 sq ft arena initially located in Downtown Dallas, which first launched in 2015, to the newly renovated former ITT building in DeSoto which boasts 15,300 square feet transformed into a gaming oasis that includes a private streaming room, a competition stage, podcast recording studios, tournament hosting rooms, an outdoor basketball court, and a cafe equipped with a bar.
Geekletes Co-Founder Danny Martin defines the name “Geekletes” as a brand name synonymous with any individual who is part of the Esports industry as a player or advocate. Martin grew up in South Dallas attending schools in Oak Cliff, Lancaster, and Desoto. His entrance into the gaming industry came to him as a student at the University of Texas in San Antonio where he studied and received a BA in Business Administration with a focus on Entrepreneurship. “It all started with an individual who sought me out to help repair gaming consoles for his company. I would solicit customers on campus in exchange for his mentorship. As I started to collect data on these customers, I realized that Esports was going to be big business at the time and knew I needed to get in,” Martin said.
Martin hosted his first Esports tournament as part of his capstone in college and learned the ins and out of the Esports tournament world. In which prompted an interest in developing a software platform specifically for tournament hosting. The ideal place to learn was within the heart of San Fran, so he accepted a position at a venture backed tech start-up and eventually started working with IBM. Martin was relocated back to Dallas through IBM but was excited to return home to start building back into the communities he once grew up in.

Rugby Australia does a partnership with Amazon where fans can use Alexa to get exclusive content, live commentary and more for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
The fourth edition of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Sports Survey came out through the week and we discuss some of the highlights of it.
In a very short pod for this edition we talk:
Reddit and the National Football League’s (NFL) strike a partnership. The deal will see Reddit host a monthly series of ‘Ask Me Anything’ (AMA) Q&A’s on its platform with assorted current and former players, team personnel, executives and more. Intriguingly, the NFL will also produce a digital video series featuring the guests, to be distributed on Reddit as well as on their own channels and outlets.
And we talk about the AFL continuing the Shanghai fixture between St Kilda and Port Adelaide in 2020.
Melbourne are soon to open Australia’s largest, and dedicated, esports Arena at the Emporium in the city’s CBD. Set to be the largest video gaming and esports entertainment venue in the Southern Hemisphere it will be developed by Fortress Esports.
Two very strong Australian sportstech companies, LIGR Systems and InteractSport, consolidate their partnership.
FIFA to stream African World Cup qualifiers worldwide. We wonder if that is the potential for the Asian Football Confederation, seeing as we’re big Socceroos supporters.
We close with a bit about Eliud Kipchoge’s attempt at a sub two-hour marathon.
Esports business Gfinity Australia is ceasing operations in November. Parent company, Here, There and Everywhere (HT&E) have cited difficulty in making this “sustainable,” profitable and getting value in the local market. We discuss if there is a problem with finding value in the esports sector in Australia?
Lifting off from there, Supercars plans to keep investing in their eseries even though their partner Gfinity Australia is ceasing local operations.
We talk through the possibilities of Super Rugby if they decide to offer more matches in front of a paywall and sell direct to fans.
And we revisit Ahmad’s cricket bet from a fortnight ago.
With the EPL kicking off this weekend, the rights in Australia are fully paywalled behind Optus. No EPL on SBS for 2019-2020 season!
Then from there, Optus have said they have 700,000 active subscribing accounts watching Live & VOD football on Optus Sport. We talk about the telco’s strategy in taking on some many football rights and if it makes financial sense in our nonsensical way.
The Nine Network continue their summer tennis push with the rights to the ATP Cup.
Ahmad and Clint then close out with a ramble about OTT and digital broadcasters in Australia.

Fortnite World Cup is the biggest sports tech news of the week. We give shouts and ramble on about it.
NBL’s new multifaceted, shared rights deal sees SBS offer the entire season via their OTT platform ‘On Demand,’ selected matches will be on free-to-air on SBS Viceland with ESPN televising 59 prime time NBL games as well under a two-year agreement. The NBL will absorb the production costs. It’s a long-term play, by investing in owning and producing their own broadcasts it keeps the sport visible. Basketball is a healthily participated sport with huge fandom means visibility of the NBL alongside the NBA develops a nice alignment between the two.
Speaking to the TV Blackbox podcast this week, Foxtel's CEO, Patrick Delany stated it was time sports governing bodies "got realistic about the value of rights generally and the utility of them because the market's no longer rising, it's contracting." We talk about the lessening of the value of rights and Ahmad makes a bet on cricket.
Cricket Australia’s participation figures have been revealed to be false according to a Fairfax investigation. The issue does speak to poor data and record keeping, and what does constitute participation?
Tennis Australia and TechStars to collaborate on a sportstech accelerator and incubator in Melbourne post 2020 Australian Open. Tennis Australia is maintaining their evolution as a tech focussed governing body and have found a way of safeguarding their future by collaborating with and leading sports tech companies and potential top startups to help with their on and off court technology.
One year to go to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Channel 7 have begun their hype, hype, hype. Seven will launch another six channels across its broadcast video on demand (BVOD) platform 7plus for the Games. Up to 40 live streams of every sport will also be available on 7plus, with the network touting more sports! more events! more gold medals! "THAN ANY PREVIOUS GAMES!!!". In other news, and very interesting news too, Channel 7 have partnered up with IOC’s OTT 24/7 channel, Olympic Channel, which will be available on 7plus.
Melbourne-based start-up PlaySport has had a big PR push with the announcement that they have unveiled its new platform connecting Australians with over 50,000 sports organisations across 350 different sports. Article was written by David Swan for The Australian – hopefully the article is not paywalled!
Rolled out in Australia this week, local Instagram users won’t be able to see how many likes other posts receive, with the social media platform implementing a trial that was first rolled out in Canada in May. Australia will be the second market in the world to participate in the test to remove the total number of likes on photos and video views in the feed, permalink pages and profiles. On the off, the emphasis should hopefully move to quality content and engagement.

English Premier Club Liverpool have named EA Sports as their official video games partner under a new multi-year deal. The agreement, which comes into effect from the start of the upcoming 2019-20 season, will see the games developer work with the club produce Liverpool-content specific to feature on the club’s social channels. There has been a bit shuffling between rights holders and clubs moving between EA Sports and Konami – the developers of Pro Evolution Soccer – in recent months.
Canberra-based digital agency Unbnd has finalised a partnership with the NBA to broadcast the NBA’s dedicated 24-hour channel in Australia and Singapore using its immersive mixed reality broadcast platform. The MIA app will be available before the start of the 2019-20 season on most VR headsets, mobile devices, and tablets. Website to check them out: https://unbnd.com.au/
Rugby Australia is looking at a range of streaming options to increase distribution of domestic and (reportedly!) Super Rugby content when its broadcast rights are renegotiated in 2020. Games such as the NRC, Junior Wallabies matches and more could be available for free in the next broadcast deal as the governing body looks to bring more rugby to different platforms for free. The problem has been that so much rugby has been paywalled for a long time so different platforms should come to the fore.
Last Friday’s Women’s State of Origin rugby league match between Queensland and New South Wales used live GPS-based statistics via Catapult’s devices during the live broadcast for fans watching at home. Both teams wore Catapult GPS devices that tracked position, and that data was used to show metrics to the audience such as speed and distance covered, and to track effort and intensity on the field. Catapult Sports, the NRL, and Channel Nine had already been providing live GPS data for the Men’s State of Origin series since 2017.
Guy started his professional athletic career as a cricketer playing five years for the Victorian Bushrangers, Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, having signed his first professional contract at just 17.
Many professional athlete careers are interrupted by injuries, which Guy has experienced, with multiple back injuries and shoulder surgeries. At these times Guy focused on his rehabilitation and desire to get back to playing the game he loved.
After losing his cricket contract due to long term injury, which was unsustainable for a fast bowler, Guy successfully moved codes to secure a contract with the Melbourne Demons. The ability to move codes is a testament to the perseverance and character Guy upholds himself to, and his desire to be a professional athlete despite a challenging career which has been so heavily influenced by injury.
However, he also saw the opportunity in using his periods of rehabilitation to acquire new professional career skills outside of sport, including working for the Channel 7 social media team, and as a broadcaster on sports radio. Having enjoyed both of these experiences, he knows that post his playing career, he will leverage his experiences as a professional athlete and the professional skills he’s already acquired to seek new opportunities.
Here are the Show notes:

ESPN live streamed game two of the NBA finals between the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors via its app with a broadcast aimed exclusively at a teenage audience. If you see the images, the presenters were super-imposed at the bottom of the screen during the game, commentary was different and it looks like a stream you see on Twitch. In-game graphics were also used to highlight key moments, such as dunks, three-pointers or blocks. The graphics showing player names and additional stats were also used and is known as ESPN Mode. The stats were provided by Second Spectrum, the sports data intelligence company who created the on-court graphics in partnership with ESPN – ESPN Mode has been experimented with through the NBA playoffs.
