Sensory processing disorder occurs when there is an interference with the perception of sensations. It can be in the form of physical disability, autism, or even a highly sensitive personality. Becky reveals that she belongs to the latter category, making her hyper aware of more details and connections.

Living with sensory sensitivity can be overwhelming and stressful. For Becky, she copes by finding “comfort in clutter”. Other examples of coping mechanisms are emotional eating, excessive shopping, or social media addiction. All of these activities relieve anxiety temporarily. But left unchecked, they may prove to be detrimental.

Becky shares her strategies for dealing with her hoarding tendencies. She has a “one thing rule” wherein she must remove a single item from her storage. Her second self imposed rule is to replace old things whenever she makes a purchase. These small steps allowed her to gain momentum to continue discarding unwanted things. Dr. Sree believes that minor decisions like these are good practice for when we have to make more important ones. They also empower us to believe that we are capable of making right decisions.

[31:38] Jude’s Tools for Assessing Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Jude tells Dr. Sree about making the move from accounting to psychotherapy. After working as an accountant for thirty years, Jude felt like she had reached the outer edges of what she wanted to accomplish in the profession. She realized that external influences had been the primary motivation for her decision to become a Chartered Accountant, and looked to psychotherapy to explore a different version of herself. Jude had always dabbled in personal development and psychotherapy was an organic extension of that interest.

Dr. Sree and Jude talk about the struggles they’ve both had with Impostor Syndrome, the phenomenon where despite evidence of our competence and success, we often tell ourselves that we are not good enough, smart enough, or even equal to the people around us. This often means that we are constantly trying to prove ourselves through our actions, ironically resulting in being very good at a multitude of things.

Jude and Dr. Sree assert the importance of changing your inner dialogue and how it can change our relationships with other people. They encourage us to engage with our inner critic, and not let it keep us stuck and small. Learning to engage with our inner critic allows us to explore the stories we tell ourselves; and take away their power to hold us back.
