Remembering Norma: A Life Well Lived

Remembering Norma: A Life Well Lived

On Friday, February 23, our matriarch Norma Milligan who loved St. Peter's and worshiped here for over 50 years passed from this life to the next at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. Christine took time on Sunday to share her memories of this remarkable woman, now among the ancestors who watches over us and passes on the torch to love fiercely, speak truthfully, live fully in who we are, just as she did.

Creation - God's Gift of Sleep | The Rev. Christine Lee

Creation - God's Gift of Sleep | The Rev. Christine Lee

Christine kicks off our Lenten sermon series "Sleep For A Weary World," looking at sleep through the lens of the creation story. God invites us to enter the rhythms of grace by beginning our day in the evening - with sleep, rest, and trust. We awaken to join God's creative work in the world, embodied creatures in relationship who collectively care for one another. What practices of sleep and rest might we take up to form us in these rhythms of grace? Scriptures: Genesis 1: 1–5, 2: 4–8, 18–23 Psalm 121 Mark 1: 9–15

But One Day, I Know, It Will Be Otherwise | Ian Trevethan

On this Ash Wednesday, Ian shares a poignant and personal message about the God who has compassion on us "as a father has compassion on his children, for he knows that we are dust." As we remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return, we can hold this reality with hope because what is outward is passing, but what is inward is made new in Christ. Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 4: 13 – 5: 1 Psalm 103: 8–14 Matthew 6: 1–6, 16–21

With Jesus on the Frontier | The Rev. Christine Lee

With Jesus on the Frontier | The Rev. Christine Lee

"The deepest motive for mission is simply the desire to be with Jesus, on the frontier between the reign of God and the usurped dominion of the devil." (Lesslie Newbigen) Christine unpacks the story of Jesus' first miracle in Mark: casting out demons. Jesus' presence brings an apocalyptic urgency that draws out the battle between the power of God and the power of Satan. When it seems like evil is winning, she encourages us to fix our eyes on the One whom even the demons obey. Scriptures: Deuteronomy 18: 15–20 Psalm 111 Mark 1: 21–28

As she brings all of herself, both grief and faith to him, Joanna reflects on what it is like to sit in that space with Jesus and hear him ask if she believes he is the resurrection and the life.
