If so, do we approve or are we on the fence when it comes to an authentic life? The Lord, who searches us and knows us, is calling us to life an authentic life that is rooted in God’s love so that we can serve and lift up others.

We’re both saints and sinners at the same time.  Not bad, but broken.  We’re in need of restoration on a daily basis.  Fortunately for us, God and Jesus know that about us from the get-go.  We kick off our Fall sermon series with an examination of what it means to be one of God’s saints, but also, as the apostle Paul states, “the worst of sinners.”

At some point in our lives, we will be faced with the loss of loved ones that completely change our lives and maybe even our circumstances forever. The story of Ruth and Naomi gives us a moving narrative about how to surround those who experience the deep grief of loss and even lead us to find hope, courage, and the community that sustains us. Let’s trust the larger story in our lives - we are always in God’s loving hands no matter what.

Text: Romans 12:9-18 Living with others can be a challenge but the apostle Paul gives us sage advice: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” This sounds good but is it more easily said than done? A cynic once described large churches as “more sinners under one roof!” But God equips us with all the grace we need and more to live in harmony with all people. Join us as we delve into one of Jesus’ greatest commandments: “love thy neighbor.”

Our new sermon series will explore how we live with others, how we live without others, how we live with unchangeable things. But before we get to any of those topics, we begin with how we live with Christ. How do we see Jesus’ presence in our lives and in the lives of those around us? Are we able to learn to see Christ in the people and places where we never thought to look? How are we being witnesses of Jesus in this world that needs his love?

The parable of the wedding banquet delves in the question of who, exactly, is invited into the party that is God’s kingdom.  What does it mean if we don’t have the “right clothes” to wear to the party?  Are we party crashers if Jesus himself invites us and even provides the “right clothes” when he gives us his own righteousness?

The book of Revelation is quite complicated with many different and sometimes confusing images. The good news of the gospel is clear and concise -- we are saved by Christ and Him crucified! Come and hear more about that good news this Sunday at 9:00 and 10:30.

Text: Matthew 19:13-15

We get the words of Jesus wrong all the time, just like his earliest followers. When a group of children were hanging out with Jesus and having a great time, the disciples wanted to send them away for “bothering” Jesus. But Jesus knows children are the center of God’s love, not on the margins of it. Jesus sees children as keys to understanding everything that he is doing in and through the world. Jesus is inviting us into a delightful adventure of encountering the world with the fresh eyes of those who are seeing it for the first time.

God’s Word provides us with solid reasoning on the importance of settling our differences with others.  The God of peace asks us to be reconciled with our brothers and sisters even before we come before the Lord in worship.  Wasn’t it peace that Jesus was showing us in his death on the cross?  How is God calling us to transform our anger into something life-giving before we do and say things that we later regret?

Text: 1 Samuel 17:41-51

The young shepherd boy faced Goliath, the champion of the Philistine army, with five smooth stones and an unshakable trust in God.  We face our own giants as we journey through life but each of us wrestles with doubts that shake our faith in God, in others, and in ourselves.  How do our doubts cripple us and cause us to stumble?  More importantly, how does God equip us for the fight of our lives?

John 20:19-23

“A Starry Night.” John’s Gospel gives us a picture of the disciples who were locked away in fear after the death of Jesus. But Jesus breathed on them and gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit along with the words, “peace be with you.” How is Jesus calling each of us to move from fear into peace? Come and celebrate Pentecost with us as we look at the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

Text: Luke 24: 13-35 We may very well ask how disciples could travel the road to Emmaus with Jesus and not recognize him. But the simple truth is that Jesus walks with us every day and comes to us in many ways that we fail to recognize! Nevertheless Jesus makes himself known in many and various ways. Sometimes we notice Jesus right away. Other times, it takes awhile.

Jesus may be getting ready to leave his disciples at his ascension into heaven, but he promises them and us that he doesn’t leave us as orphans. The promise of the Holy Spirit for all who follow Jesus is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Without the Spirit who is given to us in our baptisms, there would be no gift of faith for us!

As we examined in our Lenten series, we are often lost and need to be found.  The risen Christ tells Thomas what he needs to hear and what we all need to hear when we don’t know the way: “I am the way.”  The promise of heaven is more than “pie in the sky”; it invites us to walk with the very One who is the way to eternal life.

When people are facing death, they speak of the things that matter the most to them.  It was no different for Jesus, who prayed for us: for our unity and for our protection.  We are all under the care of one who continues to look out for us, even when he is no longer in this world.

Text: John 20:19-31

The risen Jesus appeared to his disciples who were hiding behind locked doors in fear.  As we face those fears in our lives that hold us captive, Jesus comes to us as well with nail-scarred hands that bring hope and peace into our lives.  How will we show and tell of the One who makes such a difference in our lives?

The story of Jesus’ death and resurrection is the rescue story for each and every one of us!
