OutSTANDing Stories: Cameron Keighron, NUI Galway PhD Student

In the fourth episode of our series 'OutSTANDing Stories', Emily Savage interviews Cameron Keighron, a PhD NUI Galway student examining stem cell therapeutics for Parkinson's disease. OutSTANDing Stories: Rob Fitzpatrick, UCD

In the third episode of our series 'OutSTANDing Stories', Emily Savage interviews Rob Fitzpatrick, a social science student and current auditor of the Literary & Historical Society in UCD. Rob chats about overcoming his early difficulties of starting as a fresher in the college and the endless benefits of engaging in society life and fostering supportive connections, which doesn't necessarily have to be limited to the LGBTQ soc. While Rob feels like his experiences have shaped the direction of his studies, he also chats about the importance of choosing a path that speaks to your own personal goals and dreams rather than one you think you should be limited to or feel compelled to do, solely based on identity.

Episode 8: The Voluntary Mental Health Sector + COVID-19

This podcast speaks to people working on helplines or 'active listening' services throughout the last year. With the country in lockdown and everyone spending much more time at home, vulnerable people are facing more challenges than they normally would. Although many face-to-face mental health services have been temporarily suspended or had their services scaled back, helplines have remained open throughout the pandemic.

Conor speaks to Lee Daly, a volunteer with Childline, and Rory Fitzgerald, Regional Director of Samaritans, on their experiences of providing remote listening services for people in need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Childline is 1800 66 66 66 and at childline.ie

The Samaritans is 116 123 and samaritans.org

Democratic Republic of Congo Series: Episode 6 pt. 2

Democratic Republic of Congo Series: Episode 6 pt. 2

Have you ever wondered what your phone is made of? What kind of journey it made before reaching your hands?

In the last two episodes of our podcast series on the Democratic Republic of Congo, we’ll explore conflict minerals and supply chains.

The DRC is a country with a massive abundance of mineral resources. This should be a blessing, but it has also proved to be a curse – for many seek to secure these minerals for their own economic advancement.

To get to the bottom of this issue, we’ll be talking to Sasha Lezhnev of The Sentry, who shares his expertise on supply chains, mineral extraction, and conflict in the DRC.

Welcome to the first episode of our podcast series on the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In this episode, we'll journey into the history of the DRC, an intricate web of events that seem to have remained in the shadows but that as we will see, are very much connected, and are a direct result of the Western world's destructive practices.

We will also briefly look at a particular point in history that Ireland and the Congo have in common.

Episode 6: The Gender Recognition Act Review - Why Were Some People Left Behind?

In November last year the Gender Recognition Act 2015 went through a review which left some groups out - meaning certain groups won’t be able to have their preferred gender recognised by law.

We talked to Ollie Bell from Trans Pride Dublin to learn more about where we're at in terms of true gender recognition for all, and what we can do to finally get there.
