Playlist and Podcast Chat with Dee (SFS Got Five On It)
This episode is primarily a breakdown of a few strange things that I felt like sharing with others. In telling the story I asked Cloudy J to pick five tracks from my Stay Sucka Free w/ Dee Playlist and share them in between my conversation with myself and you the listener. If you're a long-time listener you already know the deal, when I don't have the energy to have conversations with people I love, I straight up just make a playlist to keep me company and in this case, I discuss not only the songs and memories attached to each shared audio/visual treat, I also inadvertently end up having a conversation with everyone! Kinda...
Next time I'll ask someone to join me....maybe
Thanks for listening. Send comments, suggestions and treats to us via our email account: staysuckafreefive@gmail.com
Read Admire (SFS Got Five On It)
This week's edition of Got Five On it finds host, Devoya Mayo and Little Rock, Arkansas, musician, and resident Read Admire on a storytelling journey about forgiveness. You can also peep the playlist and video's included via our youtube page. Thanks as always to the production of Cloudy J (Jason Delgado) and his inclusion of all the special tidbits you'll hear as we dwell into "The Heart of the Matter".
Bobby Womack All Star Tribute Episode w/ Osyrus Bolly (SFS Got Five On It )
Guess what we got for ya'll? An hour and some change of a conversation with Osyrus Bolly of the podcast As A Matter of Black. We borrowed our flow from their topic-driven style and discuss the following:
- What Our Bobby Womack All Tribute Album Would Consist of and Who would be involved
- The Music of 90's Cop Drama New York Undercover & Lastly
- How Bolly Stays Sucka Free
I make a lot of wild accusations in this episode (because of course I do) and get really into the details with Bolly, in other words, we enjoyed ourselves and hope you do too.
As always ( not really) we made a few SFS perks to go along with this episode. so if you've read this far and would like a Bobby Womack postcard mailed to you, send us your address ( you can send it to staysuckafreefive@gmail.com) and it's yours ( while supplies last).
Thanks for joining us!
Playlist Breakdown w/Devoya Mayo (SFS Got Five On It)
If you haven't already guessed we've been having "thee" most issues as of late. Technical issues, guest issues, personal issues, you name it. All that aside though, we still do try and make something available when we have the capacity to do so.
This episode is primarily a breakdown of the Stay Sucka Free w/ Dee Playlist that I provide via my personal youtube page. When I don't have the energy to have conversations with people I love, I straight up just make a playlist to keep me company and in this case I discuss not only the songs and memories attached to each shared audio/visual treat, I also inadvertently end up having a conversation with everyone! Kinda...
In this session, I shout out folks like Dominque Jones, Cruz Serna, and Joshua but I also talk about Black Milk and how I've only ever seen him perform in Fresno and how that wouldn't of been possible if someone (Johnny Q) didn't love this artist and then want to share him with the place he calls home. There is something about people who provide options rather than simply complain about the lack of them that just makes me so happy. I can't take you seriously if all you do is point out things you don't enjoy but never offer something you consider valuable to the fold. Let me stop right there and end this with a hardy thank you to Cloudy J ( Jason Delgado) for his continued production and editing skills. Sending him my ramblings and ending up with a product you like is a gift and he continues to give them.
Happy Holidays Y'all... & Keep it Sucka Free!
Andrew Martinez (SFS Got Five On It)
Good morning! Guess what y’all? We have a real-life guest in the lab today! On this lovely Sucka Free Sunday, we invite you to get to know Andrew Martinez, Friend, Father, Husband and connoisseur of Parliament/ Funkadelic and the blues. Not necessarily in that order.
In this episode, we discuss the influence of the blues on UK rock, both old and new, why Al Green is so amazing, learning to appreciate music outside of our own upbringing, and how others unknowingly inform our curiosity and lead to new musical adventures. Connecting the dots between vulnerability and the source material for the blues, why teddy Pendergrass was the man, song that reminds him of his first crush, why Dr. Dre should just do music and not act, and lots of other random tidbits.
Tune in and hang out with us for a bit. We promise there are a few signature surprises from Cloudy J on the production side too.

Devoya Mayo (SFS Got Five On)
Oh. My. God. I just listened to this podcast of myself that Cloudy J edited and let me just let ya'll....I mispronounce, murder and mangle all the words. Even easy words!!! You would think as the production team would have alerted me and said something, but guess what??? It's just me and Jason in two different cities, with two different views and apparently, he felt like this was okay enough to air.
So yeah...I'm reluctantly adding this to the mix because time constraints don't allow for re-recording at this late stage. Boooo.... oh snap, it's Halloween! Maybe I should just think of this as a spooky situation and get over it! Hahahaha.
At any rate, I created a Five Song Playlist on Dope Things and in the process get nostalgic for many things. If you know me, like me or even love me please forgive me for all the oversights. It's hard doing this thing alone, but here we are.
1. Take It- Amp Fiddler x Raphael Saadiq // Stephanie Pearl Art

3. Steam- Leon Bridges // Altar in a Box

Joy Graves (SFS Got Five On It)
It's difficult to write a bio for someone you've known your entire life. How does one bottle up all the nuances that shape a friend into family and then share that with others properly? Joy Graves was the first person outside of family who I looked up to and admired. She lived next door to me as a child. Her mama and my mama were friends and spent many days and evenings in one another's company. Years later we became cousins by a process called, my mama had kids with her uncle. I was a tiny bit younger and envied the way in which she took care of her siblings and the other kids in the neighborhood.
Joy let me join her clubs and activities and that remains my first memory of how to organize and gather folks, so when she put together a playlist on Self-Care I was honored to discuss it with her. She deserves all the kudos for caring for others, she's done this work all her life, so to finally indulge in that kind of care for herself is a thing of beauty to observe.
Click the link to hear more about Ms. Joy and her adventures in loving, learning, and sharing. Also, if you're interested you also help elevate her latest venture which includes a charity. Enjoy~

In 2020, she was named one of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts 100 and Creative 10. Her most cherished value is courage and most important practice is listening.
Devoya & Dana (SFS Got Five On It)
We decided to engage in a little cross-pollination today and share a conversation about the Stay Sucka Free w/ Dee Playlist. This playlist is a combination of thoughts, ideas, and uplifting sounds. Dana Clark of Soul Stretch Yoga took some time out of her practice to absorb the playlist and then ask Devoya about it in depth. No more asking questions to the wind, a real-life conversation took place y'all. At any rate, it's a collection of thoughts on spirituality, faith, change, and joy. We hope you listen and take from this what you need. We'll be back next week with our regular episodes and rest assured we've got some great guests lined up for September!

You also get music which is first for us, but James assured us that his formula is tried and true and that the law won’t come after us. Jason is skeptical, which is why we make good partners, but we gone let this ride out and cross our fingers it’s received without removal from the powers that be. Last but not least this is such an enjoyable ride, James has such vibrant energy and is excitable which makes for a whole vibe. Holla if you hear me!

Joshua Asante (SFS Got 5 On It) Pt I
Happy Sucka Free Sunday! Guess who back for another storytelling chat with music as the focal point? If you guessed Joshua Asante you'd be flirting with luck and you'd also be correct. April marks both the birth and death of Trouble Man, Marvin Gaye.
Marvin Gaye (born Marvin Pentz Gay Jr.; April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, earning him the nicknames "Prince of Motown" and "Prince of Soul".
In part one of a two-part episode, Joshua and I each share our 5 song playlists exploring our admiration and love for the artist who passed away just one day shy of turning 45 years old. In this episode, we discuss a ridiculous great idea, vulnerability, church, ghost notes in music, the blues, California raisins, and much more. If you can’t tell, Joshua and I both respect art, one another, and Marvin so it only makes sense that together the conversation gets lively, to say the least. We hope you enjoy it.
John Hammond (SFS Got 5 On It)
John Hammond is a consultant specializing in liver, pancreas & transplantation surgery who grew up in Belfast Northern Ireland, attended college in England, has lived in Nottingham, Pittsburgh, Norway but currently resides in Newcastle upon Tyne in what I have to say is the most welcoming and picturesque little village I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. This interview takes a look at the sounds that helped usher John into adulthood by way of BBC radio, and all the other cool things I’ve often wondered about but have zero points of reference for. John comes off super lowkey here, but I have to tell y’all, he is such a joy to be around and his sense of humor is chef’s kiss. We hope you enjoy it. #GillesPeterson #BBCRadio #Concerts #VanMorrison #DID #FreeStyleFellowship #Berlin #NottinghamUniversity #VinceWilson #Norway #SpokenWord

Wambui Njuguna: Wellness Yoga Instructor (SFS Got 5 On It)
Host Devoya Mayo, met Wambui by way of another new friend ( shouts to Mona) upon her arrival in Helsinki last year. Sometimes sisters are thousands of miles away and aren't recognizable until the moment they walk into the same room. It really was that magical feeling one gets when they just know they've found chosen family. You can get to know more about Kenyan born, yoga instructor Wambui by clicking on this episode and following along as her 40 Revolutions Around the Sun playlist unravels. You can also catch up on all her magic via @wellnesswithwambui on the gram. Okay...without further ado, let's get it!
Don Del Toro: DJ & Producer (SFS Got 5 On It)
If i'm being honest this weeks episode is mostly for the heads. If you were a fan of the funk party era, zapps park, j & c house of records, listening to your parents records, hip hop in the park, vvv's late night shenanigans, audies or DL Frequency, this episode is mostly a love song for you.
It's old friends catching up on all the dopeness that made for great memories and it was such a joy to interview Don in this fashion. Please tell the others who were around back then but maybe hide out a bit now, then ask yourself...when Dee call's will I be ready to tell my chapter? We certainly hope so. Enjoy

I'm calling them Cloudy J Mixtapes, but if I'm honest I like the title he came up with, I just don't think y'all would understand, so I'mma just keep that to myself. So yeah...go on, click the link and let's get into it!
