Season 4: Episode 6 - Becca Ferrier Baker from Orange Moon Records

This week in our final episode of this season we chat with Becca of Orange Moon Records. If you have visited Steampunk since December 2021 at the weekends you will no doubt have noticed that an emporium of new and used vinyl has appeared upstairs. Find out more about the woman behind the record store as she chats with Toby. Orange Moon is committed to celebrating record stores and collecting in the most inclusive way possible, bringing folk together through their love of music. She has also been giving back to the community through free DJ workshops she has been running for young people at Steampunk. We love the creative vibe that she brings to Steampunk and the record store is just the beginning of a reimagining of our upstairs space.
Come along to visit Orange Moon every Friday - Sunday 9-5 and don't miss all of the exciting musical events happening on Record Store Day on 23 April, 2022. Find out more about RSD here:

Season 4: Episode 5 - Peter Maniam from Rogue Village

This week we chat with Peter Maniam, who runs local events company Rogue Village here in East Lothian with his wife Jenny. Together they imagine and choreograph the most beautiful events, the most recent being Winter Wonderland in the run up to last Christmas. Events are one of the sectors which has been most affected by the pandemic and their resilience and determination to keep creating against all the odds is really humbling. Doing it with such good humour and grace is really next level. Can't wait to see what they come up with this year. Find out more about Rogue Village at www.roguevillage.com/.

Season 4: Episode 4 - Sarah and Michael Lewis

Season 4: Episode 4 - Sarah and Michael Lewis

Back in 2013 Steampunk opened our doors for the very first time, as a pop up coffee bar in 'The Den' in Forth Street. We were on a back street, behind a rather unremarkable door in a room full of 50's furniture. We really didn't think many people would show up. The very first people to come in through those doors that morning were Michael and Sarah Lewis along with their friend Alex Naughton. They were so great - we had a brilliant conversation and I remember thinking that people who liked what we do will in fact find us, no matter how obscure our surroundings. Nearly 10 years later, Michael and Sarah (and Alex) are still regulars at Steampunk and in fact have become good friends.

Sarah grew up in North Berwick, left and then returned to raise her own family here. Michael is a transplant from much further away. When we decided to do a series about our community it seemed like a no-brainer to talk to them as they were bound to have such different experiences of North Berwick and yet have chosen to settle here. They are also very much a part of the Steampunk community. As well as the whole family visiting regularly, Michael has been involved in quite a few things at Steampunk - painting our lockdown doors and responsible for some of the beautiful coffee related illustrations we sell as well as being an active volunteer for our Steampunk Sessions, he even appears in the documentary about us.

We chatted with them back in December, everyone pretty wiped out from the hectic run up to Christmas, when they welcomed Cath and Cameron at their home to record - we hope you enjoy this cosy conversation between friends.

Season 4: Episode 2 - Jackie Shuttleworth from Fringe by the Sea

Meet Jackie - the 'chief sorter outer' of the wonderful local/international arts festival Fringe by the Sea which takes place in North Berwick every August. For 10 days every summer FBTS brings an incredible explosion of art and creativity to our tiny town in East Lothian. They somehow manage to bring in extraordinary headliners and mix it all up with a wealth of local creative talent kindling opportunities as well as entertaining the public. In 2021 they managed to pull off a bigger and more ambitious programme than ever before despite the 'no vertical consumption of alcohol' rule! We cannot wait to see how they grow it even further this year and how they continue to support emerging talent.

Toby and Jackie talk about just what an event like this brings to a community like ours. We think it is a huge amount and look forward to watching this wonderful festival continue to blossom.

Season 4: Episode 1 Chat with Manz Ahmed from Nisa North Berwick

Season 4: Episode 1 Chat with Manz Ahmed from Nisa North Berwick

In season 4 of our podcast we are stepping out of our coffee shop tucked behind North Berwick's High Street and having a chat with a variety of different people in our community. We often talk about the importance of community here at Steampunk - but what exactly does that mean and how is it seen by other members of our community?

We started off at the top end of the High Street and had a chat with Manz Ahmed whose family has run Nisa there for the past 26 years. Funnily enough, turns out we have something surprising in common as fellow business owners - a serious dislike of capitalism. Plus, in an unexpected turn of events find out what Nisa's top Christmas seller is!

Season 3: Episode 1 - Team Steam chats brewing coffee at home

Hello! Welcome back to another season of the pod! We have been in Lockdown 2 here in Scotland since Christmas eve and our cafe is closed. Although the roastery is still busy roasting and shipping online orders, we have all been working separately in order to reduce any risk of virus spreading and many of us are on flexi furlough. We have certainly been keeping busy though and have been brewing plenty of coffee at home, like the rest of the country. To kick off the new season, Pete, Toby and Cameron get together (virtually) for a chat about brewing and what we are reading, watching and listening to during lockdown. One of the things that we miss most about the cafe being closed are exactly these sort of chats that happen every day in the cafe - between the team and also with customers.  Hope you enjoy this little reminder of coffee shop conversation.

Season 2: Episode 6 - The Team Steam Christmas Special

Season 2: Episode 6 - The Team Steam Christmas Special

Join Peter, Toby, Scott and Cameron for a chat about all things Christmassy. What we love best about both hospitality and Christmas is the chance to  indulge in all sorts of interesting, funny and random conversations. Because everything is weird this year, and just getting weirder we decided we would just take it all online. The chat encompasses nut roast, Chippolatas and nativity roles (Jesus had a grandad??) and very little about coffee. Hope you enjoy it anyways...

This is the last episode for 2020! Next year we will come back with further actual interesting coffee content.

Season 2: Episode 3 - Three Roasters Collaboration with Dear Green and Glen Lyon Coffee Roasters

This week Catherine Franks is joined by Lisa Lawson from Dear Green and Fiona Grant from Glen Lyon Coffee Roasters. We are three female run coffee businesses who operate in different corners of Scotland. We have collaborated together for the past three years every Christmas to bring the Three Roasters Coffee Gift set which is a set of three coffees roasted from three different regions of the world at our three roasteries. This year's set is available again (in limited quantities) via Dear Green's website www.deargreencoffee.com. It was brilliant catching up with these incredible women. I have such admiration for them and their businesses and love how we are drawn together by our shared ethos of care (for our communities and how we source and roast coffee) into a collaborative relationship rather than a competitive one.  Find out more: Dear Green - www.deargreencoffee.com FB/Instagram @deargreen Glen Lyon - www.glenlyoncoffee.co.uk FB/Instagram @glenlyoncoffee We hope you enjoy this episode. Season 2, Episode 2: the Falcon Peru project with Line Cosmidis

Season 2, Episode 2: the Falcon Peru project with Line Cosmidis

In this episode Rachel Beebe, head roaster at Steampunk, talks with Line Cosmidis from Falcon Coffee. Line is an agronomist who is head of sales at Falcon Specialty. She talks to us about Falcon Peru a project they launched to link smallholder farmers in remote areas of Peru to the specialty market.

Steampunk has bought three lots of coffee through the project: La Huaca in 2018, which came from several regional farms, and this year, Freddy Bermeo and Herminio Raimirez. We just finished the last of the coffee from Mr. Raimirez, so hopefully you were lucky enough to try it while it lasted. After our conversation Line messaged to say that two of the farmers they work with have placed in the Peru Cup of Excellence competition. Eli Espinoza placed 8th and Fidel Huancas placed 4th. It’s really exciting for everyone involved with the project and it speaks to the quality of the coffee they’re producing and exporting. We are looking forward to tasting and roasting this Peruvian coffee for years to come.

Season 2, Episode 1: The Cafe - No1 Peebles Road

Welcome back to the Steampunk Coffee podcast. In the last series we got to know Team Steam a bit better. In Series 2 we are looking outward in slowly expanding circles and will be having conversations with people in different areas of the coffee supply chain who we work with and have gotten to know over the years.

First up we are absolutely delighted to welcome Craig Anderson and Ema Perry from No 1 Peebles Road. Their cafe is a busy hub at the heart of mountain biking territory in Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders. We have supplied these guys with coffee since the day we started roasting 8 years ago and love the ethos, vibe, food and literally everything about their cafe.
