#13: Sports and STEM
Dr. Zeena Hernandez is a physical therapist specializing in treating orthopedic cases, functional fitness athletes, and Olympic weightlifters. She is also the PT of Filipina weightlifter and Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz! In this episode, she talks to us about how sports is now more than just a game of showing strength and agility, it is a science too. You can make learning connections behind shooting a basketball, identifying your angle and swing when hitting as golf ball, or even applying Newton's laws of motion when bowling. Doc Zeena received her undergrad from St. Paul University – Iloilo, Philippines and obtained her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Utica College. She has around 5 years of clinical experience, and was awarded the Physical Therapist of the Year (2018) by the Academy of Filipino-American Physical Therapists (AFAPT) for her contribution and commitment to service and excellence. #12: Food Science and Technology in the Philippines
Food scientists and technologists are responsible for the safe development and manufacturing of our food products and their processes. They have continuously helped improve the food that we consume today while ensuring safe consumption and preservation, making these food items more available! We invited Anna Tongco, a Food Scientist and a product developer with a background in food technology, to talk about the Food S&T environment in the Philippines. Anna is currently completing her master's degree in food safety from Michigan State University. Apart from being absolutely enamored by food and material science in general, she also enjoys writing, musical theater, and Filipino Martial Arts. #7: Achieving an equal future in STEM with our Mom-umental woman, Julia Abad!
In this episode, we invited Julia Abad, the Executive director of Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment, as she sheds light on the importance of gender advocacy and participation of women in the workplace. She was also honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2014 and recognized as one of Manila’s 40 under 40 Leaders in International Development by devex.com in 2013. But before anything, Julia takes pride in being a mother. She finds fulfillment in raising her daughter, helping her reach her potential. This is reflected in her own work as an empowered leader where she makes it her personal mission to provide opportunities and build a more gender inclusive workplace, especially in STEM.
