Luka as LeBron's NBA Successor + Mavs Season Storylines

Luka as LeBron's NBA Successor + Mavs Season Storylines

On this episode, Dalton Trigg and Matt Galatzan talk about how Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic is set to be the face of the NBA once LeBron James retires. Some -- and by 'some' we really just mean one person who has annoying Mavs Twitter for more than two years now -- have questioned this idea of Luka taking LeBron's place, though, as if such a move would simply be the NBA giving that title to Doncic only to help continue expanding the league globally. Although that is one benefit Doncic being the eventual face of the league, this episode of the Mavs Step Back Podcast debunks any 'agendas' some people think the league might have by discussing why Doncic's play on the court and how he carries himself off the court makes him worthy of such a title. We also discuss the Mavs' Christmas Day showdown with the Lakers and our favorite Mavs storylines heading into the season. Thanks for listening, and remember to subscribe!

Mavs remaining options after Day 1 of trade season: LaVine, Hield or Oladipo?

Mavs remaining options after Day 1 of trade season: LaVine, Hield or Oladipo?

On this episode, the guys discuss what was a very busy opening day of the NBA's trade season, including what remaining trade options could still be out there for the Mavs in the NBA Draft tomorrow night. Zach LaVine, Buddy Hield and Victor Oladipo are all still on the board. Despite the lack of activity early on, the Mavs could still have us all smiling by this weekend if they take an aggressive approach. With it looking like Giannis could be staying in Milwaukee after all, an uptick in aggression is definitely needed right now. Thanks for listening!

Jrue Holiday Trade Rumors - What's the Mavs best offer?

Jrue Holiday Trade Rumors - What's the Mavs best offer?

On this episode, Dalton and Matt discuss the idea of the Mavs trading for Pelicans 3-and-D shooting guard Jrue Holiday. There are reportedly multiple teams talking to the Pelicans about a potential Holiday trade, and we believe the Mavs are one of those teams based on their interest in him for the last three years, plus the fact that Holiday is exactly the type of shooting guard you'd want sharing the backcourt with Luka Doncic. From there, the guys briefly discuss Bradley Beal's trade-related comments he made on another podcast recently. Finally, a handful of our listeners' questions are answered in our Mavs Offseason Mailbag 5.0, including a very interesting Ben Simmons trade idea. Thanks for listening!

NBA Free Agency + Trade Talk: Mavs want ‘win-now’ moves this offseason

NBA Free Agency + Trade Talk: Mavs want ‘win-now’ moves this offseason

On this week's episode, Dalton and Matt start out by talking about the NBA potentially coming back sooner than we all thought, as it was reported that the league is in discussions to start next season on December 22nd with a shortened 72-game schedule and decreased travel. The guys discuss how this is a good decision for the NBA, all things being considered, and how it could potentially be beneficial to the Mavs. The next conversation focuses on a report from the Dallas Morning News that the Mavs are willing to trade anyone on the roster except Luka Doncic or Kristaps Porzingis. The guys discuss how this 'win-now' urgency from the Mavs could affect their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2021 (Spoiler: it won't change much at all). NBA Draft prospects telling their agents they want to play with Luka in Dallas? Danilo Gallinari as prime offseason target? All that and more on this week's show. On this episode, the guys are joined by Dallas Mavericks big man Willie Cauley-Stein. Cauley-Stein starts off by talking about how the timing of the pandemic led to his decision to not attend the NBA Bubble, being that his daughter was born over the summer. From there, he dishes on what he thought of his teammates' efforts against the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round, what he's been working on this offseason, his upcoming player option, how he can help the Mavs going forward, and much more! The guys then end this one by asking Cauley-Stein three of our listeners' questions submitted via Twitter over the weekend. Thanks for listening, and be sure to subscribe!

Mavs' rumored interest in Montrezl Harrell + Zach LaVine as a Mavs trade option

On this week's episode, the guys talk about a rumor saying the Mavs have interest in Montrezl Harrell this offseason. If the Mavs could even afford him, would he be a good fit? What current Mavs bigs would need to be traded to make it work? In the second half of this one, Dalton and Matt then spend nearly 30 minutes analyzing a potential Mavs trade for Zach LaVine, and how he would fit next to Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis as the third star in Dallas. Thanks for listening!

What would be the Mavs' most realistic trade offer for Bradley Beal?

What would be the Mavs' most realistic trade offer for Bradley Beal?

On this episode, Dalton and Matt start off by discussing the second round of the NBA Playoffs, including the Miami Heat knocking out Giannis Antetokounmpo and the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in just 5 games. How could this complicate things with Giannis and the Bucks going forward? Even if he declines his extension, is one for year of true title contention worth risking Giannis walk away in free agency? Do the Mavs have a legitimate shot at him? All of that is answered in the first half of this episode. In the second half, the guys discuss the possibility of the Mavs pursuing a Bradley Beal trade on draft night, including what they think the most realistic trade offer from Dallas would be. As always, thanks for listening!

Mavs Offseason Mailbag: If Milwaukee trades Giannis, should Dallas offer Porzingis?

Mavs Offseason Mailbag: If Milwaukee trades Giannis, should Dallas offer Porzingis?

On this week's massive hour-long episode, Dalton and Matt spend the majority of the time answering listeners' questions about potential options the Mavs could have this offseason. Some of these topics include what type of players Dallas should target, what players are worth the Mavs trading their draft picks for, and the most interesting topic of all... if Giannis declines the Bucks' super max extension, and the Bucks decide they need to trade him, should the Mavs potentially offer Porzingis in order to get Giannis in the door before 2021 free agency? Given contract lengths, would it be too much of a risk? The guys discuss all that and much, much more. Thanks for listening, and thanks for submitting your questions! Keep 'em coming!

Mavs eliminated by Clippers in Game 6: Luka Doncic - 'My only goal is a championship'

On this episode, the guys recap the Mavs' 111-97 Game 6 loss to the Clippers, which officially brought their 2019-2020 season to a close. Luka Doncic was amazing while facing elimination for the first time in his career, finishing with 38 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, but wasn't able to overcome the mounting injuries that the Mavs suffered as a whole all season long. After talking about the game, the guys immediately look towards the Mavs' future with the NBA Draft, Free Agency, and potential trades that could be made to improve the roster heading into next season. Also, the guys talk about how NBA should suspend Marcus Morris for what looked like an intentional attempt to step on Luka Doncic's hurt ankle. Thanks for listening!

“BANG!”: Luka Doncic downs Clippers at the buzzer in Game 4 to give Mavs the win!

On this episode, the guys gleefully talk about the Dallas Mavericks' unreal Game 4 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Luka Doncic, who was questionable before the game with an ankle injury, ended up starting for the Mavs and played the best game of his young career with 43 points, 17 rebounds, 13 assists and one huge step-back buzzer-beating three-pointer in overtime to give his team the 135-133 win. Dalton and Matt talk about the greatness of Luka's performance and much, much more. Thanks for listening!

Mavs fall to Clippers in Game 3, 130-122, as Luka suffers ankle injury

Mavs fall to Clippers in Game 3, 130-122, as Luka suffers ankle injury

On this episode, the guys recap the Dallas Mavericks' 130-122 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 3 of their first round series. Despite the Mavs outscoring the Clippers 37-28 in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to overcome the second quarter, where the Clippers outscored the Mavs 45-31. Luka Doncic became the first Maverick to ever record a triple double in the playoffs with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, but his night took a turn for the worst when he suffered a nasty ankle sprain, putting his status for Game 4 in question. As good as Porzingis was, and as much as the rest of Doncic's teammates tried to rally in his absence, Kawhi Leonard's dominant performance was just too much to overcome. We discuss all of this and more in this episode. As always, thanks for listening!

'Halleluka!' ... We Finally Have a Mavs Win in the Bubble!

On this episode, the guys recap the Mavs' 114-110 overtime win over the Kings, which ended a two-game losing skid. With the win, the Mavs are still the only team in the entire NBA to have not lost three games in a row. Luka Doncic put up a monster performance in this one, scoring 34 points to go with 20 rebounds and 12 assists. Doncic became the youngest player to ever put up a 30-20-10 stat line. The guys discuss how this Luka performance reminded them of some of Dirk Nowitzki's performances back in the day, where he would just seem to will the Mavs to victory at times. Is there any way the Mavs could upset the Clippers in the playoffs if Doncic is playing that way on a nightly basis? Catch all that Mavs talk and more right here. Thanks for listening!

Mavs Basketball is FINALLY BACK!

On this episode, Dalton Trigg (@dalton_trigg) and Matt Galatzan (@MattGalatzan) express their joy from the NBA (and Dallas Mavericks basketball, specifically) finally being back in action, as scrimmages officially began on Wednesday. The Mavs will play their first scrimmage against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night at 6 p.m. From there, the guys discuss how the Mavs have taken over the 'bubble' from a social media standpoint, and how that show of great chemistry could help them going into the future. Other topics discussed include how the NBA's bubble experiment is working perfectly so far, and wondering why the Mavs didn't take a chance on Bol Bol last summer when they had the opportunity. Thanks for listening!

Can the Mavs Start Their '3rd Star' Recruiting in Orlando?

On this episode, Dalton Trigg and Matt Galatzan are joined by DallasBasketball.com's boss man Mike Fisher to discuss all things Mavs Bubble-related. First, the guys dive into a couple of recent 105.3 The Fan interviews with TNT's Kenny Smith and Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle. Smith believes that the Mavs don't need a '3rd star,' something we've also written about here at DBcom in recent weeks. Is he right? In the second half of this episode, Fish talks about his personal expectations for the Mavs as they prepare to fly to Orlando for the NBA restart set to take place on July 30 (July 31 for the Mavs). Although this NBA bubble experiment is mostly about playing basketball and finishing the season, Fish offers up an interesting point about how this could be the Mavs opportunity to start informally recruiting their '3rd star,' should they decide that they need one. As always, thanks for listening! (Note: this is from our recorded Zoom video conference, so there are a few hiccups in the audio, but nothing major)

From there, the guys talk about to newly released Mavs 'Orlando Bubble' schedule and make predictions for that eight-game stretch. Thanks for listening!

The plan was officially passed by the league's Board of Governors on Thursday, giving all fans something to look forward to again. The guys are joined by Kirk Henderson of Mavs Moneyball halfway through this one, and they talk about the NBA plan's formatting, how the Mavs (and Luka Doncic specifically) will adjust, and potential pitfalls with the restart date being two more months away. Step Back Quarantine: Ranking TV Shows, Video Games, Snacks and more!

This week, Dalton and Matt are back to discuss how life has been since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NBA to suspend its season. Having a lot more time at home than they usually do, the guys discussed what tv shows they've really gotten into over the last few weeks, as well as video games and quarantine snacks too. Although this particular episode isn't centered on the Mavs like it usually is, we encourage our listeners to go back and listen to some of our favorite episode with big guests like Mark Cuban, Donnie Nelson, Will Cain and many others. On this episode, Dalton and Matt recap the Dallas Mavericks' thrilling 127-123 overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans, which was the first of many duels between young superstars Luka Doncic and Zion Williamson. The guys talk about the great defensive jobs Maxi Kleber and Kristaps Porzingis did on Williamson, as well as the MVP-level Porzingis has been playing over the last month. From there, the conversation shifts to what the ceiling of this team could be heading into the playoffs, while also taking a quick glance at the current Western Conference standings with only 18 games remaining. Luka/KP's growing chemistry, Cuban's protest, falling in love with THJ, and much more!

On this episode, Dalton and Matt discuss the Mavs' recent 4-game stretch, where they've gone 3-1 overall, but 3-0 with three blowout wins in the games where both Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis play. The Mavs' young star duo's chemistry is just now starting to click in a way it didn't early on in the season, and it couldn't come at a better time with the Mavs jockeying for playoff position in the Western Conference.
The conversation then shifts the Mavs' loss to the Hawks from Saturday night ... a game that's being protested by owner Mark Cuban due to a very questionable call at the end of the game. Although this protest is technically just for one game, the guys discuss why this move from Cuban sends a bigger message to the NBA about its officiating lately.
Tim Hardaway Jr. has emerged a key contributor to the Mavs' success this season, not only with his stats, but also with the passion and energy he brings on a nightly basis. Hardaway Jr.'s shooting hasn't just been 'good' this season, it's been 'elite.' The guys briefly dive into those numbers before pondering what a potential long-term extension would look like for him this offseason. Thanks for listening!

Mavs officially sign Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Luka Doncic is back, baby!

This week, the Mavs Step Back welcomed special guest Ben Collins to the show. Ben is a reporter for NBC News, but more importantly (at least in our opinion), he is also just as big of a Mavs enthusiast as the rest of us. The episode starts out with the guys reacting to the Mavs officially signing Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and how he could help strengthen Dallas' playoff push. The conversation then shifts to how the Mavs have essentially 'treaded water' with all the injuries they've been dealt, but that they'll need to pick it up significantly in the second half of the season to solidify their playoff standing in the Western Conference. The pod then wraps up with the guys giving a brief preview of the Mavs game against the Kings on Wednesday night, which will be Luka Doncic's first game back after missing the last seven due to an ankle injury. Remembering Kobe, Mavs' Struggles at Home, and One Final Trade Deadline Preview

Dalton and Matt start out this episode by remembering the late, great Kobe Bryant, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash Sunday along with his daughter and seven others. The guys talk about how they never liked Kobe as a Mavs' opponent in the first half of his career, but softened their feelings on him towards the end with him and Dirk Nowitzki showing each other mutual respect every time they got the chance. From there, the guys then discuss why it is that the Mavs struggle at home this season, yet thrive on the road. And with just one week remaining until the NBA trade deadline... how are we feeling about the lack of Mavs rumors right now? Thanks for listening!

The guys discuss not only how losing Powell could change the Mavs' offense, but also how it could affect the team's NBA trade deadline plans as well. Want to know which potential playoff matchups the guys think would favor the Mavs in April? You get all that and much more in Episode 53. Thanks for listening!
