S3 Ep10 Adam Horwitz

S3 Ep10 Adam Horwitz

Today, we got my brother, Dr. Adam Horwitz on the pod!

Adam is a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Medicine in their psychiatry department. His Psychology career has combined several different elements– research, clinical work and therapy with patients, teaching and lecturing, and much more. Some of his areas of interest and focus include cognitive and behavioral risk factors associated with suicidal behavior, trauma-focused therapy with veterans, and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) for mood and anxiety disorders.

In this episode, Adam shares with us a bit about how he compartmentalizes the difficult subject matter he deals with in his work, tells us how he overcame his own imposter syndrome when starting off in his career, and tells us how we can use values as opposed to goals to help us navigate our careers.

Here is my amazing brother, Dr. Adam Horwitz!

S3 Ep7: Gina Horwitz

It’s a big day everyone!! Today we have my MOM on the pod!! And, it is so so fitting because my mom, Gina Horwitz, just recently retired!! And even better, I got to sit down with her in person to do this interview!

My Mom spent the past 12 years at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she was the associate director of philanthropy and alumni relations at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Growing up, mom was around, she was a homemaker raising us 3 kids, and she was extremely busy in her volunteer work– she was always chairing different events and fundraisers, working with various causes, just always doing so much for others and the community. She ended up going back into the workforce when I was in high school.

I am so beyond proud of her- her bravery for putting herself out there, her confidence in herself and in what she is doing, seeing her truly thrive in a different career path and become a heavy hitter has been amazing.

In this episode, we talk about what “work” really means and how our society values getting PAID for what we do, we discuss how mom took years and years of volunteer experience and the skills she learned there and transferred them into a new career path, we hash out the topic that many people are uncomfortable with – which is asking others for money, chat about how we can create a culture of giving amongst young people, and so much more!

Mom is the epitome of what it means to be a mensch, what it means to do good, what it means to be unapologetically yourself. Please meet my mom, Gina Horwitz!

In this episode, Joseph shares about the fateful bar mitzvah he attended that sparked his desire to rescue cooked meals for those in need, we hash out this conundrum of being able to afford the high costs of living while wanting to work in impactful, charitable jobs and how to deal with the enormous pay gap that exists, how the monied world views the charity world, and so much more. S2 Ep5: Amy Mullins

S2 Ep5: Amy Mullins

Please meet the amazing Amy Mullins. Amy is a teacher, a healer, a CEO, a giver, a leader. She has dedicated her life’s work to empowering and supporting children in various ways, as a life coach, through her work at Detroit Boxing Gym, and oh so much more. In October, Amy created and launched A Courageous Voice (ACV) whose mission is to prevent and protect children from child sexual abuse using evidence based, educational tools to raise awareness and empower families to stop this violence. In today’s episode, Amy shares about how being of service to others has been a huge element in her healing journey, what it was like to take something so painful and not spoken about and turn that into her life’s work, and talks about how everything changed when she realized her voice matters.

*This episode discusses child sexual abuse. Listener discretion is advised*

A few things have changed since Amy and I recorded this episode. Amy left her day job and is now working on ACV full-time which is super exciting. Another very important update is that ACV which once focused on supporting adult survivors has had to shift its focus more toward children because there really aren’t any funds available that support adult survivors. ACV is still working with survivors, but implementing a curriculum with youth programs and schools to raise awareness and educate children and families.

If you would like to learn more, get involved, or donate, please go to https://www.acourageousvoice.org/

If you are someone you know has been sexually abused, you can find a resources and support at acourageousvoice.org/resources
