How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic | What is Brittle Star?

How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic | What is Brittle Star?

We're speeding down the hill of what is the end of 2020 and in the final episode of our very first podcast series we're celebrating with a crash and a pop! Brittle Star - the magazine we edit is full and fully 20 years old and this series has been raising a glass to its writers, the written word in general and creativity in lockdowns throughout history. But what is Brittle Star? We thought it would be lovely to finish the series ‘How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic’ with a little bit of personal history of editing Brittle Star and a pop quiz! And of course, we have wonderful poems and short stories in the writers’ own voices for you! This episode features Jane Pearn, Jesse River Dylan Merry, Jane DeVoy and Shan Mukathar.

We'd love to hear from you!

How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic | Throwing to the Face

How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic | Throwing to the Face

How did Johannes Gutenberg turn a lead alloy into gold? Through metal moveable type! Without this and his modified agricultural press we wouldn’t have mass printing - no books, newspapers, pamphlets, treatises, journals… and we wouldn’t have the print literary magazine Brittle Star. This episode, part of the series ‘How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic’, looks at Gutenberg’s process of making metal type and helps Brittle Star celebrate 20 years of publishing with readings of poetry and short stories in the writers’ own voices. Includes work from Stephanie Limb, Edward Avern, Fawzia Muradali Kane, Janet Hatherley and Maia Elsner.

Researched and hosted by Jacqueline Gabbitas and Martin Parker.

We Have Lift Off! | The Erasure of Distinctiveness

We Have Lift Off! | The Erasure of Distinctiveness

This  episode is part of a series called We Have Lift Off! How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic. This instalment is different in format and tone from episodes 1 & 2 and picks up from an idea in the last episode: Can you be  creative in a global pandemic?. It looks at what writer and academic Emma Smith calls 'the erasure of distinctiveness'. Martin and Jacqueline, an artist and writer, talk candidly about their own creative processes during lockdown - how they populated their work with portraits, people and ghosts at a time when most of us were unable to meet up with family and friends. They talk about the heartbreaking gravity of the fact that the deaths from Covid 19 were and still are seen by a wider world as statistics on a graph, and how they unwittingly found distinctiveness in their protraits and characters, and even erasure, in tacit response.

As editors of Brittle Star magazine, Jacqueline and Martin also share with you wonderful new and original poems and stories from issue 46. Listen to these writers read their own work in their distinctive voices. This episode helps celebrate 20 years of Brittle Star and includes  Alison Binney, Karen Green, SK Grout, Joan Lennon, Tina Cole, Kenneth Pobo and a sneaky-peek of a story by Janina Arndt.

So, join Martin and Jacqueline wherever you are in the world as they  share great writing with you, and try to shake off some of the mystery surrounding poetry and fiction.
