How a Lunchtime Conversation Sparked Inspiration: Sterk Family Law Resource Center
Finding a reliable professional referral can be a daunting task, often leading to information overload and confusion. It's easy to get lost in a sea of online reviews and recommendations, making the search process overwhelming. However, connecting with trusted colleagues or friends can be a valuable way to find reputable professionals in various fields.
Gwen Sterk, an Attorney, and a therapist colleague, met for lunch to catch up and it ended up being more than an hour of breaking bread. After speaking with him, their conversation sparked Sterk’s idea that there was a need for reliable referrals, especially for family law clients. Right after their lunch, Sterk developed Sterk Family Law Group’s Resource Center to offer clients access to trusted professionals. The goal of the Resource Center is to simplify the process of finding reputable services and foster a network of reliable professionals who can support each other and their mutual clients.
By establishing a Resource Center, Sterk and her team have created a valuable platform that bridges the gap between clients and trusted professionals. Creating Connections With Children: Trust Based Relational Intervention

Bentsen and his wife Cheryl formed LoveMoves.Us to provide service and support for foster and adoptive families. Bentsen became interested in Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), became a practitioner and now has launched a pilot 9-week training program for parents.
TBRI is a therapeutic, trauma-informed intervention program geared to train parents and caregivers in methods to provide effective support and treatment for at-risk children. There are three main principles of TBRI: Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting.

Paid Leave for All Workers Act (PLAWA) in Illinois
In this installment of the employment law series, Attorney Seth Matus, Partner at Fish Potter Bolaños, P.C., speaks to Gwendolyn Sterk in detail about the Paid Leave for All Workers Act, which went into effect on January 1, 2024.
As summarized on the Illinois Department of Labor site: “The Paid Leave for All Workers Act (PLAWA) allows workers to earn up to 40 hours of leave from work each year. Workers can use paid leave for any reason and employers may not require workers to provide a basis for their time off request. Workers earn one (1) hour of paid leave for every 40 hours they work. If an employer has an existing policy, certain exceptions may apply. There are certain categories of workers that are not subject to the law.”

Non-Profit Heroes: Racing for Mental Health
Racing for Mental Health all started with a conversation and in this podcast conversation, Shannon Sak shares their history and mission. Showcased as Sterk Family Law Group's November 2023 Non-Profit Hero, Racing for Mental Health is committed to destigmatizing mental health and transforming the conversation around it. By being a voice and standing up to the social injustice that has been ingrained into our society, we can eliminate mental health discrimination along with fears of seeking treatment.
History:
Jordan Missig began talking with his parents about a friend who had opened up to him about his mental health struggles with ADHD. This friend told Jordan that he was not diagnosed with a mental health condition, but he struggled with learning and did not know or want to admit that he had a problem and seek help. This embarrassment of admitting he might have a mental health issue, made continuing with college very difficult, so he dropped out. This led to a discussion about the stigma issues surrounding mental health and how unfortunate it was that anyone would feel too ashamed to seek treatment and support.

Non-Profit Heroes: American Greyhound
Since 2001, American Greyhound has been dedicated to finding homes for retired racing greyhounds, as well as other sighthounds in need. Their volunteers welcome greyhounds and sighthounds when they have nowhere else to turn, provide the necessary veterinary care, teach them what it means to live in a home, and then find them good forever homes where they are able to live out their lives as wonderful pets. Whether you would like to volunteer, foster, or adopt, there are many ways to support their cause.
Their organization is quick to lend a helping hand to work with other non-profit rescue groups to help ensure these dogs are given a second chance at life and some of the dogs end up giving back to the community as well through programs like Greyt Readers. The Greyt Readers program brings the dogs into libraries to allow kids from all different reading levels to participate in the program, including some that have difficulties with reading, or who are not comfortable reading in front of adults, but have no issues with reading to the dogs.

Online Protective Order Requests in Illinois
On January 1, 2023, some changes in Illinois policy went into effect to help further protect victims of domestic violence who are seeking protective, or restraining, orders against their abusers.
Senate Bill 03667 amends the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1963, the Stalking No Contact Order Act, the Civil No Contact Order Act, and the Illinois Domestic Violence Act of 1986 to allow victims who are seeking a protective order to now be able to file the request online. While there are some caveats, including the ability to file online only in counties in Illinois that have over 250,000 residents, this new change was implemented to allow victims to file an order without having to face their abuser.

Non-Profit Heroes: Rainbows For All Children
Showcased as Sterk Family Law Group's Non-Profit Hero for January 2023, since 1983, Rainbows has supported children experiencing grief of all kinds through facilitated peer groups within their communities. Their services provide assistance for children and teens who may be experiencing grief from a serious illness or death, separation or divorce, incarceration, deportation, or community crises.
Rainbows for All Children trains adult volunteers in community-based sites such as schools, faith-based organizations, libraries or community centers to lead age-specific in-person and virutal support groups for children and teens, ages 3-18, who are grieving from some type of loss. These groups provide a safe environment that encourages communication while identifying, navigating and discussing difficult feelings that accompany loss.

Reconnecting Parent-Child Relationships Through Reunification Therapy
In many instances, a family law court may appoint what is called a reunification therapist in your legal case.
Reunification therapy is a form of family therapy that has the goal of working on the dynamics between a parent and child to be able to reunite their relationship. Non-Profit Heroes - The Yard Foundation
The Yard Foundation is a dynamic team of four extremely driven individuals (Clem, Erin, Tony, and Amy) who strive to find fun, creative ways to help others all while bringing awareness to various causes. Sterk Family Law Group is proud to honor them as our November 2022 Non-Profit Hero. The Yard Foundation officially started in 2021 after a group of friends found that their online philanthropic efforts needed to become official in order to be able to pay it forward.
John, aka Clem, had a large Facebook group that had firefighters who pooled together to help out the widow of a firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty. While their hearts and intentions were all in the right place, they realized that it was time to make their cause an official 501c3 organization so they could continue sharing the love. The group initially started to fundraise for firefighters, but their outreach quickly evolved to also supporting children and women’s issues and those affected by illness and injury. The team at the Yard is quick to lend a hand to various other needs in the community as well which includes supporting other area non-profits.

Non-Profit Heroes - Nadine's Blue Butterfly NPO - Sterk Family Law Group, P.C.
After Jennefer Hofferica’s mother, Nadine, passed away in 2020 from ALS, Jennefer was looking to find a way to honor her mother while servicing. Nadine was a long-time victim of domestic abuse and had a small blue butterfly tattoo on her shoulder and Nadine’s legacy helped Nadine’s Blue Butterfly emerge from it’s cocoon. Sterk Family Law Group is pleased to honor them as our October 2022 Non-Profit Hero!
Knowing that children are greatly affected by the effects of abuse, Jennefer wanted to find a way to flutter some joy into these kids’ lives. In the midst of the pandemic shutdown, Jennifer reached out to her neighbors to inquire if they had any gently used or new items that could be given to children and teens who are affected by traumas. After an outpouring of donations was received, Jennefer’s path to officially establishing Nadine’s Blue Butterfly was in flight. Jennefer and NBB’s team works closely with domestic violence shelters, such as the Crisis Center for South Suburbia and Guardian Angels, to help provide for the needs of child victims.
Nadine’s Blue Butterfly hosts private “shopping sprees” to provide clients from partnered domestic violence and social service organizations the opportunity to "shop" for gifts for their children as well as basic necessities and clothing. Registration is required for these events, but Jennefer and team do not require those registering to disclose any information other than a name and number to help ensure their safety.

On February 15, 1993, seven-year-old Martin Kisel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. During the following three years, Martin — like so many other young cancer patients — experienced a series of painful procedures as well as intensive chemotherapy as part of his treatment protocol.As Martin endured the seemingly endless procedures, his mother, Colleen Kisel, discovered that providing him with a small toy after each procedure resulted in a calming distraction from his pain. Colleen could see the joy these toys gave her son and believed this would be good for all children who were being treated for cancer, and soon after that vision, the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation was born.
The hope, dream and goal of the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation is to have a treasure chest in all pediatric oncology facilities in the nation. The Treasure Chest program allows cancer patients (ranging in age from birth through 18 years) at 65 children’s cancer treatment centers to choose a toy as a reward for having the courage to undergo painful but necessary procedures.

Project Fire Buddies - Non-Profit Heroes - Sterk Family Law Group
In December 2016, the seed for Project Fire Buddies was planted when firefighters and paramedics, from the Oak Forest, IL Fire Department, helped one child who was struggling with complications from cancer. The experience touched their hearts and they wanted to do more to help and Project Fire Buddies was born.
Through the efforts of volunteer firefighters and first responders, Project Fire Buddies brings joy to kids struggling with serious illnesses. Every critical illness a child is battling is a fight Project Fire Buddies gives their all to and they strive to ensure that each child they reach will stand with the support of our firefighters and our community.
We had the pleasure to speak with Project Fire Buddies Board Member Ryan Ballard, to learn about the wonderful acts of kindness that their volunteer organization provides to bring joy to children who have serious illnesses. Temporary Relocation of a Child - Illinois Family Law - Sterk Family Law Group, P.C.
In Illinois, if a parent who has either equal parenting time or the majority of parenting time pursuant to a court order wants to move, certain laws are applicable. In general, there are distance restrictions that determine if the move is allowed without permission from the other parent or court order.
As of January 2022, there have been some modifications to the law, under 750 ILCS 5/603.5, in which "the court may order the relocation of the child on a temporary basis before the entry of a final allocation judgment if it is in the best interests of the child." What does this mean?

Non-Profit Heroes: The Legacy Ranch featured by Sterk Family Law Group
Many people may find themselves watching videos of puppies, kittens, or other cute animals throughout the day to take a break and relieve some stress. Beyond being cute to watch, animals can play an important part in various forms of therapy for people as well. According to Psychology Today, "Animal-assisted therapy can be a useful intervention for some individuals or groups. A meta-analysis of 49 studies reporting on animal-assisted therapy found positive outcomes and overall improved emotional well-being in those with autism, medical conditions, or behavioral issues."
Since 2017, The Legacy Ranch in Lockport, IL has been using horses to provide various forms of Equine-Assisted Therapy and has also incorporated their horses for mental health, occupational, physical and speech therapies in partnership with licensed therapists.
Their therapies include interaction with the horses, which has been scientifically-proven to help heal individuals who have not previously seen success with traditional styles of therapy.
